Mohamed, Ali 16 May 2011 (has links)

The mournful cage: Max Weber as a hunger artist

Reddekop, Jarrad 17 January 2008 (has links)
Many accounts of Max Weber’s thought would seek to portray him as a theorist of responsibility or “re-enchantment” – as one who can confirm for us the appropriateness of a liberal position given the conditions of life as moderns, thus preserving the possibility of a renewed project of management at every turn. Such a reading may well be comforting today, insofar as it enables a reconciliation to the constellations of technological thinking within which we already find ourselves engaged. Over and against such accounts, this thesis attempts to elaborate an image of Weber as a hunger artist, as one who brings into emphasis a fundamental sense of loss attendant to “modernity”, and who broods upon that loss as the condition of a more faithful reflection upon the character of being. Not only does Weber offer insight into modern conditions of research and the theorization of politics; he is one who thinks such questions in their mournful profundity, gesturing towards what cannot be carried forward within their terms. In the melancholy of his thought, it is suggested, we glimpse the contours of a horizon from which we have still not emerged.

The German Alliance-Mission and the Federation of Free evangelical Churches in Germany: the history of their relationship and its theological rationale

Spohn, Elmar, 1967- 30 November 2007 (has links)
This thesis describes the unique transition of the German Alliance-Mission (GAM) from an interdenominational faith mission to a denominational church mission agency. This process was begun and developed by the affiliation on the Federation of Free Evangelical Churches in Germany (FFEC). The GAM was in the beginning stage an intentionally interdenominational mission agency. Their founding fathers Carl Polnick and Fredrik Franson were against denominationalism. Therefore they could not imagine approaching one particular denomination to work together. However, in the 1920's the GAM became more denominationally minded through the influence of the new mission leaders. After World War II the leaders of GAM and FFEC began to negotiate about cooperation. In 1960 the FFEC leaders asked their individual congregations to support the GAM only. In 1975, it became necessary to record an agreement. This agreement made the GAM the official world mission organisation of the FFEC in Germany. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M.Th. (Missiology)

Reis, Thiago Tavares 28 February 2012 (has links)
Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de Minas Gerais / It is intended, by means of three essays, to analyze the rationalization of the religion and of the law in Max Weber. It will accentuate how the German thinker understood the "disenchantment" of the world as dismagification of the ways of salvation and as scientific transformation of the world in a "causal mechanism". Nevertheless, the two senses are not simultaneous, there is a unique historical turning to western modernity: the own religious ethos, especially by his Calvinist streak, at the enthroning the impersonality of the social relations and to promote the rationalization of the different spheres of action, stripped the world of his sacral mantle and profane it. On the other hand, will highlight the rise, thanks to the "disenchantment" of the world, the modern legal formalism in which the laws lose their magical aura. The laws are to be reviewable, although the technical-abstract content to become unknown to the layman. Finally, the weberian concepts will be read in light of recent interpretations about the religious, moral and legal modernity of Brazil. Between the lines, will appear the weberian "ethics", secular and self-assured.

The non-operative treatment of Weber B -type ankle fractures and the clinical relevance and treatment of syndesmosis injury

Kortekangas, T. (Tero) 24 October 2017 (has links)
Abstract Despite numerous biomechanical and clinical studies on ankle fractures, the optimal treatment method for a stable fibula fracture is poorly known. Additionally, the clinical relevance and optimal fixation method of syndesmosis injury for different ankle fracture types is unclear. This thesis aimed: (I) to compare six weeks of cast immobilization with three weeks of immobilization (cast or orthosis) in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of 247 patients with stable Weber B-type fibular fracture; (II) to compare mid-term outcome of syndesmosis transfixation with no fixation in an RCT of 24 patients with supination external rotation (SER) ankle fractures and syndesmosis injury; (III) to evaluate the significance of the syndesmosis injury on clinical outcome in a case-control study of 48 patients with SER ankle fractures; and (IV) to compare the syndesmosis fixation with a screw versus a suture-button device in terms of the accuracy and the maintenance of syndesmosis reduction in an RCT of 43 patients with pronation external rotation (PER) ankle fractures. Three weeks of immobilization in either a cast or an orthosis resulted in non-inferior outcomes compared to traditional six weeks’ immobilization in patients with stable Weber B-type fibula fracture. In patients with SER ankle fracture and unstable syndesmosis after fixation of bone fractures, leaving unstable syndesmosis unfixed resulted in similar outcomes compared to syndesmosis transfixation at mid-term follow-up. Patients with SER ankle fractures with or without an associated syndesmosis injury had similar clinical outcomes after a minimum of four years of follow-up. The syndesmotic screw and the suture-button fixation in patients with PER ankle fracture and unstable syndesmosis resulted in a low malreduction rate and both methods maintained reduction well. In conclusion, stable Weber B-type fibula fractures can safely be treated with only three weeks of cast immobilization or even with a simple orthosis. A syndesmosis injury in SER ankle fractures seems to be of minor therapeutic or prognostic importance and syndesmosis screw fixation has no effect on patient’s recovery compared to no syndesmosis fixation. An associated syndesmosis injury in PER ankle fractures can be fixed with a syndesmotic screw or a suture-button device with comparable outcomes. / Tiivistelmä Stabiilin nilkkamurtuman konservatiivisen hoidon toteutuksesta on hyvälaatuista tutkimustietoa tarjolla niukasti.

Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale: A Charismatic Authority and His Ideology

Cibotti, John P 22 March 2017 (has links)
Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s militant and masculinist discourses were embraced by Punjabi Sikhs because of his presence as a charismatic authority, a concept first developed by sociologist Max Weber to understand the conditions surrounding and personal qualities of a figure which attracts followers. The rebellion he led in Punjab resulted from his radical exploitation of issues concerning the Sikh community. Religion was wielded as a tool, legitimizing Sikh violence as commanded by the Gurus. Radical interpretations of Sikh scripture and folklore were initially preached to rural, less educated crowds. While his sermons brought out their frustrations with the government, his charisma allowed him to manipulate young men, his largest demographic of supporters, into embracing violence. This study analyzes Bhindranwale from the perspective of the people that supported him. By identifying multiple social factors through which to understand Bhindranwale’s reign, this study exhibits his importance in understanding Sikhism in Modern India.
