The users’ perspective and preference on three user interface website design patterns and their usabilityDimov, Ivan January 2016 (has links)
This study is qualitative and interpretive in nature. It examines the perception of 6 people aged 23-32 with decent experience in using the Web on the usability of three user interface website design patterns. These patterns are the ‘hamburger’ icon (an icon used primarily in mobile websites and apps that shows a hidden navigation when clicked), CAPTCHAs (a task that users have to complete to continue browsing a webpage to prevent automated software operating on the webpage) and returning to the homepage. It searches for the characteristics that they desire to see in those three user interface design patterns and the actions that those patterns represent. The participants are reached through interviews and observations and the research pinpoints that although experienced Internet users find the user interface elements relatively usable some usability factors can be worked upon in the chosen design elements and pinpoints what users would want to see changed, the actual changes they want and the problems they actually encounter with the current status of the three (3) design patterns and their usability. More noticeably, the research pinpoints that a “Homepage” button would be more usable than “Home” button which is the de facto standard as of this moment and it shows that the ‘hamburger’ icon is usable enough amongst experienced users, contradicting the research pinpointing that 71 out of 76 fail using the icon (Fichter and Wisniewski, 2016) probably due to the participants’ experience with technology, but other, preferable alternatives to the ‘hamburger’ icon are revealed from the participants which are in line with the current literature. CAPTCHAs are confirmed as a ‘nuisance’ (Pogue, 2012) and the need for CAPTCHAs which are quick to solve emerges which is what forms the perception of usability of the participants.

A Pilot Study Of The Effectiveness And Usability Of The Myenergybalance Iphone App And WebsiteGraff, Joanna 01 January 2016 (has links)
The powerful technical capabilities of smartphones offer unprecedented opportunities for collecting dietary information. We have developed an enhanced smartphone application called MyEnergyBalance, which permits imaged-based self-monitoring of all foods consumed, and links to a convenient and user-friendly web-based dietary assessment tool. The primary objective of this pilot study was to determine if the MyEnergyBalance app (with use of images) in combination of the associated website improves dietary recall compared to diet analysis on the MyEnergyBalance website alone. We also generated preliminary data on the usability of the MyEnergyBalance iPhone app and website. This pilot study was a crossover study design of healthy, college students. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups. Both groups consumed their normal diet for the first day with one group recording their food intake with image functions of the MyEnergyBalance app, while the other group did not use the app. On the second day, all participants logged into the MyEnergyBalance website to record their food intake from the previous day; one group using the images from the app to assist in recalling what they ate, while the other group recalled what they ate from memory. The diet analysis results were compared to those obtained using the ASA24 website. The groups were then crossed over to the opposite vs no-image assisted recalls. Ten participants (seven females and three males) aged 20 to 22 years completed this study. The average BMI of all participants was 23.12 kg/m2 (ranging from 18.95 to 32.28 kg/m2). There was no statistically significant differences in the estimates of the energy intake between the MyEnergyBalance app and website compared to ASA24. The SUS mean score for the MyEnergyBalance app and website was 86 and 69.5, respectively. A strong, negative correlation was found between the system usability scale scores and the absolute differences in energy intake of the MyEnergyBalance app and ASA24. Although we were not able to demonstrate a significant benefit of the images from the iPhone app at improving food recall (perhaps due to the small study sample size), we were able to demonstrate a high usability score for the iPhone app, average usability score for the website, and a significant correlation between subjects' usability scores and relative accuracy of the subjects' food recall using the images from the iPhone app. A future study with a larger sample size will hopefully provide more information on the efficacy of image-based food recalls.

This thesis deals with a study on the educational resources sharing. The focus is on the design of specific functionalities to facilitate the visualization of the life cycle of educational resources intended for classroom use in the educational context of Vietnam. The initial quantitative exploratory study using questionnaires (N = 69 teachers) offered a brief summary about ICT usage in secondary school in Vietnam. The second study using a quantitative survey (N= 905 teachers) and interviews (N= 25 teachers) emphasized differences between teachers in the sharing of educational resources. These differences are expressed according to their gender, their discipline and the type of school they are working in. This second study also collected their opinions on functionalities of an effective site for resource sharing and on the formation of the life cycle of a resource. Then, two experiments revealed that teachers had few practice in (1) sharing educational resources with their pairs, (2) posting new version of a previously shared resource and (3) discussing in the forum on educational topics. This thesis argues that educational resource sharing among teachers is possible and could be supported by success factors such as: quality of resources, motivation, contributors’ self-confidence, social support, and technical functionalities to facilitate discussion and sharing on the website. The revealed barriers to sharing include: time pressure, lack of confidence, lack of motivation, culture, copyright, Internet connexion unreliability, low ICT skills, competition in the workplace, the barrier of school leadership. This work in the specific vietnamees context marked out the way for further studies on educational resource sharing in other cultural contexts and should be inspiring to design a website to facilitate sharing among teachers.

Fonctionnements et trajectoires des réseaux en ligne d'enseignants / Functionings and trajectories of teachers' online networksQuentin, Isabelle 03 December 2012 (has links)
In France, many teachers are involved in professional online networks to design, discus or share educational resources. This PHD aims to provide a better understanding of these networks internal functioning. Because they are complex organizations in constant changing, we decided to study them over a long period of time (6 to 36 month). We also conducted analyzes focused on specific aspects such as construction of members digital identities (1495 profiles analyzed) or active members conversational strategies (3324 exchanges). This PHD does not confirm the idea of a systematic collaboration in online teachers networks. Our results show that the nature of the operating rules is essential to explain what and how teachers produce resources in their networks. In some networks, working with very flexible rules, teachers mutualize collections of individual resources. Their development depends on members’ personal strategies and they are often not sustainable. In others type of networks, teachers agree to comply with binding rules for collectively produce resources in accordance with values they share and they want to broadcast. This PHD offers perspectives on designing and sharing professional resources and can provide help to create and develop teachers’ networks. On a prospective way, This PHD also offers matter of discussion about the place teachers online networks could take in the educational landscape.

Metodika auditu webových stránek / Methodology for audit of webpagesJirsa, Tomáš January 2010 (has links)
Websites have a significant impact on the competitiveness of organizations. Therefore it is necessary to deal with aspects that affect their success. At least it is worth to detect weaknesses which can be repaired with minimal effort and which baffle effective use of the site. It is possible to use quite a number of audit methods and tools but the global approach to this issue is missing. The aim of this thesis is to create audit methodology and its implementation into the online tool, to allow automatic audit performance. I first describe aspects of success of a website such as search engine optimization, accessibility, usability, information architecture and information value. Then I analyzed the methods and tools for webpages audit and explored the possibilities of their system integration. This enabled me to design the optimal process of audit and realize the tool which is the main output of the thesis and is enclosed on the CD. The benefit of this tool lies primarily in the comprehensive conception which focuses not only on a certain area, but tries to evaluate all possible facts within a single analysis. The advantage of the tool is its mass utilization. It allows detection of possible errors and solutions proposition with minimal costs and without the need of special knowledge. The tool contains several unique algorithms that check some aspects of sites and eliminate manual verification.

This work presents a research whose objective consisted in evaluating the link possibilities between the Strategic Design and Scrum for creation and development of websites by communication agencies. In order to do so, a path was taken that presented definitions regarding the concept of Strategic Design and characteristics of the Metaproject phase and Scrum methodology and establishing points of contact between them. Furthermore, additional definitions about websites were also presented. The research was outlined by a qualitative exploratory study, composed of two separate case studies. The first took place in a workshop environment and had the intention to observe how the concepts from Strategic Design could influence the creation of new products for communications agencies. The second case study took place inside the 3YZ communication agency, while developing a Hotsite and had the intention to observe the dynamics that occur with the application of concepts and techniques of Scrum. The research shows that the application of concepts and techniques of Strategic Design and Scrum can influence the creation and development of websites for communication agencies especially with the use of the metaprojectual phase in order not only to increase the number of participants in the creation of ideas but also the sense of relevance from the staff towards the project, and with limitations on the creation of systemproducts and in the impossibility of conducting cyclical deliveries of functional product parts, opening, therefore, possibilities – also presented as an initial version for a web development project – to continue this research and explore its potentials and overcome its limitations.

Déterminant du comportement de recommandation d'un site web / The Determinants of Website Recommending BehaviorVo, Quang-Tri 19 December 2013 (has links)
Despite of the increasing importance and the high frequency of the action of recommending websites, marketing has not specified reasons for which a person recommends a website more than others, and the determinants of this behavior. Based on an interdisciplinary literature including Marketing, Information Systems and Knowledge Management, this thesis presents a model of website recommending behaviors. The proposed model has been validated on a sample of 776 Vietnamese web users. The results highlight the impact of utilitarian and hedonistic benefits of the website for interlocutors on the transmitter’s decision and behavior.
