A GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR LARGE-SCALE GENE EXPRESSION ANALYSIS

Thi Cam Thach, Doan January 2011 (has links)
Recently, the whole-genome expression analysis – which is analyzing most or all of the genes in biological systems, and is a rich and powerful way to discover gene pathway - has become increasingly affordable because of the increasing amount of microarray data available in public databases. Additionally, due to the enormously available information content in these repositories, researchers have to spend large amount of time to decide on the right information to proceed. There should be an application to assist biological researchers reducing the time in finding good data sets to analyze. In this project, a thorough study in HCI, Information Visualization, interaction design and development methodologies are carried out in order to build a web-based user interface that enables searching and browsing gene expression data and their correlation (web-based). Findings from literature review are applied to create a web-based user interface in large-gene expression analysis. Then, a survey is carried out to collect and analyze pilot users‟ feedback. The questionnaire shows that the users are very interested in using the system and they would like to spend more time interacting with it. They give positive feedbacks about interactive data visualization in the website help them to save time on viewing, navigating and interpreting complicated data. Besides, it is easy to navigate and learn how to use the system to achieve interesting findings in biology. The questionnaire shows that the author is successful in applying findings from literature review to build the website. Besides, from the results there are suggestions for improvement such as the flexibility in the website by automatically recognizing the alias gene names from different databases, filling-in gene symbols using first few characters, narrowing down a search to a particular species such as human or rat, etc. / Program: Masterutbildning i Informatik

Infidelidade: o virtual invade a conjugalidade - o que buscam os usuários de sites de infidelidade

Zerbini, Maria Irene dos Santos 27 February 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-28T20:38:51Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Maria Irene dos Santos Zerbini.pdf: 2765496 bytes, checksum: 77eab8af672b05dfd95f1a653f19d504 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-02-27 / The aim of this qualitative and quantitative research was to better understand what the users of an infidelity-oriented website search for. Infidelity is a recurring theme in couples therapy clinic and with the advent of the internet, new and different modalities of extramarital modalities have become part of marital dynamics. According to the specialized websites, the internet functions as a facilitating element for infidelity since it associates anonymity between contacts and privacy of users. In order to guarantee the anonymity of the users we decided upon using Discourse of the Collective Subject as a method, which allows us to express the manifest content of spontaneous discourse which users add to their profiles and so we have constructed collective thought in the form of discourse. In order to observe the phenomenon, we have adopted the point of view of conjugality, Attachment Theory, Life Cycle model, and Investment Model. Profile data from 270 users of an infidelity-oriented website were analyzed, consisting of 154 women and 116 men, all of which, according to the website´s information, are in committed relationships and reside in the state of São Paulo. All users showed spontaneous discourse registered in their profile, and our approach was to relate the quantitative aspects about what they were looking for in the website with qualitative aspects expressed through spontaneous written content. The users were separated into three age groups: 25-35, 36-45, and 46-60 years old. Results show differences between men and women and also differences between age groups. There were also marked differences on site connection frequency between genders, where men consisted of 13.8% and women 74% of online participants. The full face and body photos posted by women (63%) showed higher results than men (24%), and in the private photo galleries where more intimate photos are posted there is a significant increase in the 46 to 60 years old demographic. What attracts women to the website seems to differ in the different age groups, but all show interest in good personal hygiene and a good sense of humor; men showed variations according to age groups, but in all age groups seem to be attracted to discretion, confidentiality, good personal hygiene and a good sense of humor. Both men and women showed similarities in what they expect from intimacy even though there were choice differences depending on age groups.

The Front Page for Probabilistic Spin Logic

Lakshmi A. Ghantasala (5930633) 16 October 2019 (has links)
While probabilistic neural networks are a staple of the neural network field, their study in the context of real hardware has been limited. Probabilistic spin logic entails the study of probabilistic neurons that have real hardware counterparts. This comes under a new effort, termed Purdue-P, whose goal it is to develop efficient, probabilistic neural network hardware to solve some of today’s most difficult problems. An important step in this effort has been the development of a website, purdue.edu/p-bit, to act as a “front page” for the effort. This website introduces the idea of probabilistic spin logic to newcomers, houses an online web simulator and blog, and provides instructions on how to access a powerful asynchronous p-computing co-processor through the cloud. The thoughts behind the flow of content, the web simulator, and cloud access of the co-processor constitute the crux of the thesis.

Three Essays on Digital Annual Reports for Nonprofessional Investors: The Impacts of Presentation Formats on Investment-Related Judgments and Decisions

Zhang (James), Yibo 21 March 2018 (has links)
The goal of this dissertation is to investigate the impact of presentation formats on nonprofessional investors’ impressions of firm performance in the context of digital annual reports. The dissertation implements a three-essay approach. Essay 1 examines whether the effect of positive/negative financial performance news on nonprofessional investors’ impressions of management and firm performance depends on whether the graphical display of that news is vivid or pallid. Conducting a 2 x 2 between-participants experiment with 470 participants from Amazon Mechanical Turk (M-Turk), I find that when the news is positive, presenting graphs vividly allows nonprofessional investors to have a more positive impression of management and firm performance. In contrast, when the news is negative, presenting graphs vividly has little effect on nonprofessional investors’ impressions. The essay informs regulators and practice by demonstrating that vivid graphical website disclosures can significantly affect the behavior of nonprofessional investors when the financial performance news is positive, but the effect is minimal when the news is negative. The essay also contributes to the financial disclosure literature by demonstrating the impact of graphical vividness in presenting financial performance information. Essay 2 conducts a 2 x 2 between-participants experiment with 565 participants from M-Turk. I investigate whether varying the user interactivity and graphical vividness of the presentation of non-financial good news counteracts bad news presented in the audited financial data. I find a positive effect of user interactivity when the graphical presentation of non-financial information is vivid but not when it is pallid. In mediation analyses, I find unexpected results in that user engagement negatively mediates the effects of user interactivity on nonprofessional investors’ perceptions of firm performance and investment-related judgments and decisions. Subsequent analyses indicate that user interactivity alone reduces nonprofessional investors’ satisfaction with digital annual reports, but the joint effect of user interactivity and graphical vividness overcomes this negative effect. These results have implications for designers of digital annual reports, investor groups consuming this information, and regulators concerned about the need for assurance on the (unregulated) non-financial disclosures in annual reports. Essay 3 studies whether using hyperlinks that connect summarized financial graphs with detailed financial statement information reduces the effect of graphical distortions on nonprofessional investors’ perceptions of firm performance. Using 385 participants from M-Turk, I find that while distorted graphs do bias nonprofessional investors’ perceptions of firm performance, the provision and use of hyperlinks to the underlying source information eliminate those effects (i.e., debias). Using the dual-process theory of cognitive processing (Kahneman and Frederick 2002; Evans 2006, 2008), I find that hyperlinks enhance the overriding effect of System 2 processing (i.e., analytical processing) on System 1 processing (i.e., intuitive processing) and indirectly reduce the decision-biasing effect of distorted graphs on nonprofessional investors’ perceptions. The study contributes to standard setting as well as financial reporting practice by providing empirical evidence that the SEC’s policy guidance on implementing hyperlinks has benefits to nonprofessional investors. Second, it contributes to both the literature on distorted graphs and hyperlinks by suggesting hyperlinking to source data as a technique to mitigate the effects of graphical distortions. The findings of the three essays have implications for the designers of digital annual reports, investor groups consuming this information, and regulators concerned about the need to standardize the presentation formats in digital annual reports and potentially require auditor oversight of graphical displays of both financial and non-financial data in these reports.

The Effects of the Web as a Form of Stakeholder Communication: An empirical case study of a co-operative

Zhao, Jennifer Yanan January 2007 (has links)
This research aims to add some understanding to the existing stakeholder management literature with a focus on the management of stakeholder communication. It explores how the Web can assist the management of the communication between a dairy co-operative and its farmer supplier-shareholders. An exploratory case study and semi-structured in-depth interview research design is used to collect, analyse, and present the perceptions of interview participants. This research highlights a paradox, which results from the inconsistent needs of the farmers as both suppliers and shareholders of the co-operative. A number of factors that have influenced farmer interviewees' decisions to either reject or embrace the Web are also identified. These factors are divided into two categories, those closely associated with individual characteristics, namely, perceived values, perceived self-efficacy, and awareness; and these outside the individual's control, namely, infrastructure and media conflict. These findings suggest that the Web adds flexibility to organisations' stakeholder communication strategies by offering an additional communication form. In particular, this research shows that the Web contributes to overall management of stakeholder communication through 1) increased accessibility to personalised and up-to-date information, 2) added flexibility to self-service programs, and 3) a recreated sense of 'conventional' community. Furthermore, the Web should be used as a complement to, rather than a replacement for, conventional communication forms in stakeholder communication strategies. Although the Web may not be the answer for all stakeholder communication challenges; what seems undeniable is the tremendous potential of the Web in facilitating and leveraging the management of stakeholder communication. Three considerations are proposed for organisations planning to include the Web as part of their stakeholder communication strategy: organisational needs, stakeholder characteristics, and communication media factors. Research limitations are discussed, and recommendations for further study are outlined in the conclusion.

The Potential of the Internet in Arts Management: Content Analysis of Arts Organization Websites

Heo, Soonran, artsforarts@naver.com January 2007 (has links)
This study is undertaken in response to the issue of incorporating traditional arts management effectively in online arts management via the websites of arts organizations. The aim is to investigate the introduction and implementation of websites in order to suggest effective and efficient approaches of management. This thesis contributes to online management and will enhance its perspective and enlarge its practice. The study presents the design and development of content analysis to analyse the content of websites in order to create both quantitative and qualitative measuring tools that are unlike currently available commercial evaluation tools, which use purely quantitative and automatic measures. The sample consists of 102 arts organization websites from six countries: Australia, Canada, France, South Korea, UK, and USA. In total seventeen arts organization websites from each country from the Yahoo regional directory have been examined. In this study, the website content analysis applied describes preliminary data that will shed some light on the current state of arts management, combining both on and offline application. The thesis articulates the three key functions that online and offline integrated arts management must incorporate in order to increase the value of utility and quality of their services delivered to audiences via the website. The framework of this study provides: 1. interactive communication dimensions between arts organizations and audiences via the website, 2. e-commerce features applicable to the website of arts organizations, and 3. other important and relevant features relating to arts management in websites in order to enforce the appropriate selection and allocation of different services, and to dynamically adapt to changes within those organizations. One of the most important contributions of this study may be that it has value for both academic and practical purposes in the implementation of arts management. As a result of this study, low levels of interactivity were identified in arts websites. This result suggests that online arts marketing is not as interactive as it could be, but undergoes a technological innovation phase towards more developed exploitation. In terms of e-commerce, successful introduction and adoption of websites has been identified. Other traditional arts management features that were not included in interactivity and e-commerce were well represented in the content of websites. The outcome confirms the potential of the website in arts management as an indispensable venue for interactive communication, e-commerce, and other important arts management tasks, such as arts education. By using content analysis, this study provides an evaluative measure for arts organizations that wish to use their websites more effectively, and it also affords a perspective on the current state of online and offline integrated arts management. The result of this study shows that arts management in the virtual venue is the same, or at least similar, to the real venue, and that websites allow arts organizations to coordinate online and offline integrated marketing management. This exploration of little known areas shows what visitors to the website actually communicate and contribute, which indicates that there is ample room for development and research in this area.

Dynamisk webbplats med MySQL och PHP / Dynamic website with MySQL and PHP

Hertz, Johan, Nordberg, Ted January 2003 (has links)
</p> / <p>This report describes how to create a dynamic and design driven web page for Landegrens Legomek AB, a minor company in the manufacturing business. The company had already recognized the need to update its former web page to a more modern design to keep up with the current trends on the Internet. Design and layout were adapted to the company’s profile and its customers, this to give the right impression of the company. The page was created with the database server MySQL together with the script language PHP. JavaScript is also a part of the implementation. We have also created an web interface for updating and managing the web page in an easy way. The work also included other parts beside the technical implementation, such as photography and copywriting. </p><p>The company has chosen to place its website in a web hotel, for this case Telia. The advantage with this solution is the security as well as the managing of the system. The disadvantage is the limits of the web hotel, e.g. the missing ftp support in PHP, which has forced us to choose other solutions.</p>

Nätpiraternas ideologi : En retorisk analys av Piratbyråns webbsite

Mårtensson, Per January 2005 (has links)
<p>Abstract</p><p>Purpose/Aim: To study how Piratbyrån argues for a free distribution of information and culture products and to find a possible ideological explanation for their argumentation.</p><p>Method/Material: I have used a rhetorical analysis to study and describe Piratbyrån´s website, a website that promotes free distribution of information and culture products. I have done so to find out how Piratbyrån argues for a free distribution and to find out what ideological foundation their argumentation is based on.</p><p>Main results: The main results of the study show that Piratbyrån uses a variety of rhetorical techniques depending on the subject and purpose of the analyzed text. Their main arguments both promote their own thesis and argue against the copyright industry. The main part of the argumentation is based on logical and factual arguments, but parts of it also rely on an emotional appeal to the reader’s heart in order to persuade. The analysis also showed great similarities between Piratbyrån´s argumentation and the ideology that Siva Vaidhyanathan describes as information anarchy. An ideology that promotes free distribution of information and culture products, that relies on decentralized systems and nonhierarchical structures and is a result of the technological development such as digitalization and peer-to-peer networks.</p><p>Keywords: Rhetoric, technology, file sharing, digitalization, network, ideology, anarchy, oligarchy, copyright, website</p>
