Liquid aspersion effuciency quantification experiment: application in ladder type distributors.Moraes, Marlene Silva de 07 July 2008 (has links)
The current text describes a simple experimental method in order to compare the efficiency of the liquid distributors applied at the ore treatment industries in washers, classifiers and mills as well as at the chemical processing industries. The technique basically consist of analyzing the dispersion through the standard deviation of the liquid mass which was collected in vertical pipes placed in a square way under the distributor. As an example of us usage, it has been applied a pilot scale for collecting the liquid mass, installed at the Santa Cecília Universitys Chemical Engineering Laboratory in Santos, with a setting of 21 vertical tubes measuring 52 mm in internal diameter and 800 mm in length. The number of holes has varied (n) 95, 127 and 159 holes/m2; 12, 16 and 20 holes for distributor, the diameter of the holes (d) 2, 3 and 4 mm and the flow of entrance in the distributors (q) of 1,2; 1,4 and 1,6 m3/h. The best efficiency of splashing of the lowest deviation pattern (0,302) was achieved with n of 159 holes/m2, d of 2 mm and q of 1,4 m3/h showing the limitation of characteristics of the project literature. The pressure (p), for this condition in the distributor entrance, was only 0,51 kgf/cm2. The measuring relation between the area of the section of the feeding pipe and the addition of the area of the roles was 5,81, the total volume of the out flow for unit of the area of the column section for this better condition was 11,32 m3/(h m2) and the average speed (v), in each hole was 6,31 m/s. Finally, the indicated method permits the comparison and quantification of the efficiency of the distributors, besides showing that some of the project concepts are not valid and the literature does not recommend them.

Occurrence, Survival, and Characterization of Legionella in WaterJanuary 2014 (has links)
abstract: Bacteria of the Legionella genus are a water-borne pathogen of increasing concern due to being responsible for more annual drinking water related disease outbreaks in the United States than all other microbes combined. Unfortunately, the development of public health policies concerning Legionella has impeded by several key factors, including a paucity of data on their interactions and growth requirements in water distribution networks, a poor understanding of potential transmission sources for legionellosis, and limitations in current methodology for the characterization of these pathogens. To address these issues, a variety of research approaches were taken. By measuring Legionella survival in tap water, association in pipe material biofilms, population dynamics in a model distribution system, and occurrence in drinking water distribution system biofilms, key aspects of Legionella ecology in drinking water systems were revealed. Through a series of experiments qualitatively and quantitatively examining the growth of Legionella via nutrients obtained from several water sources, environmental nutritional requirements and capability for growth in the absence of host organisms were demonstrated. An examination of automobile windshield washer fluid as a possible source of legionellosis transmission revealed Legionella survival in certain windshield washer fluids, growth within washer fluid reservoirs, high levels and frequency of contamination in washer fluid reservoirs, and the presence of viable cells in washer fluid spray, suggesting the potential for exposure to Legionella from this novel source. After performing a systematic and quantitative analysis of methodology optimization for the analysis of Legionella cells via matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, several strains of this microbe isolated from separated and varied environmental water sampling sites were distinctly typed, demonstrating a potential application of this technology for the characterization of Legionella. The results from this study provide novel insight and methodology relevant to the development of programs for the monitoring and treatment of Legionella in drinking water systems. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Microbiology 2014

Dragbelastning av förspända skruvförbandDogui, Sami, Sadik, Jegar January 2020 (has links)
This master theses depicts FEM analysis of bolt joints where the focus is on investigating the stressrelationship between plate and bolt. Two bolts, M8 and M16, have been analyzed where they havebeen prestressed to 70 % of the ultimate tensile strength for steel type 8.8. A surface load has beenapplied in tension along the lateral surface of a cylindrical plate. The load distribution between plateand bolt of the external load varies between 2-28 % and 1-99 % for M8 and M16 in comparison to 20% stated in equation 2.7 in SS-EN 1993-1-8.The conclusion of studies shows that the behavior between the bolt and plate is not as previouslythought in SS-EN 1993-1-8. The bolt deforms negatively first when the system is subjected to externalload. This causes the resulting force to decrease. This behavior means that the bolt is designed towithstand larger loads than necessary. The factor 0.2 should be redefined. The authors recommendthat methods proposed by Pedersen and Pedersen [2008] or Haidar et al. [2011] should be used.

MODELLBASERAD ANALYS AV AXIALGLIDLAGER I TUNGA LASTBILAR / Model-based analysis of thrust washer bearings in heavy trucksLavergren, Joel, Suoranta, Petri, Wranér, Hampus January 2016 (has links)
This Bachelor thesis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm covers a model-based analysis of thrust washer bearings in heavy trucks. This work treats Scania CV AB’s range-splitter gearbox. In this gearbox there are thrust washer bearings which are analyzed in this study. The purpose of the study is to examine the stresses the bearings are experiencing during load, determine which bearing (front or rear) that is most highly stressed, and discuss the cause for that. At large axial forces, which in turn lead to greater friction and thermal stress, there is a large risk for severe wear. Theoretically, there should not be any axial forces in a planetary gearbox with straight cut-gears, but because of the shape of the planet wheel carrier and the torque from the engine, the carrier and the needle bearings are distorted, which will cause an axial force. The axial force is not easily measured. Furthermore, it is also constantly changing during an actual driving sequence. Based on engineering judgement, the axial force was estimated to be 647 N. The axial force leads to all parts of the gearbox being pushed together axially, and cause friction forces to appear in surfaces that rotate relative each other. This process is analyzed with the FEM-program Ansys. Three possible scenarios were identified: (1) when the planetary wheel rotates relative the thrust washer bearing; (2) when the planetary wheel and needle bearing rotate relative the thrust washer bearing and (3) when the planet wheel carrier rotates relative the thrust washer bearing. The frictional heat power was simplified and analyzed as a heat power source and estimated to be 90 W. Cooling was modeled in Ansys as convection, with a film coefficient of 25 W/m2C. The initial temperatures used in the analysis were 22 and 90 °C. According to this, an equivalent stress of 12.3 MPa, and a maximum principal stress of 7.63 MPa, was located at the front thrust washer bearing. This occurs when the planet wheel and the needle bearing rotate relative to the thrust washer bearing, with an initial temperature of 90 °C. To validate the model, temperature sensors could be placed near the thrust washer bearings. However, since everything is rotating, this can be a difficult task. This report gives Scania a potential explanation to why the front and rear bearings in the gearbox are worn differently.

Washing efficiency in the pulp mill : An evaluation of the washing efficiency in SCA Munksund's pulp mill / Tvätteffektivitet i massabruket - En utvärdering av tvätteffektiviteten i SCA MunksundsmassabrukMalmberg, Malin January 2023 (has links)
A mapping of COD (Chemical oxygen demand) and sodium will be done to evaluate the different washing steps. COD describe the amount of oxygen needed to dissolve the organic matter left in the pulp and sodium is used as an indicator of the washing loss of the cooking chemicals. The in- and outgoing streams of the washing steps was analyzed to examine the efficiency. A simplified method was applied where three streams were analyzed and the fourth was calculated through flow-and mass balances. The model used to describe the wash efficiency in this study was the wash yield, which can be obtained by mass balances. The study showed that the content of COD and sodium decreased most in the beginning and reaches a limit value of 8,2 kg COD/adt and 6,6 kg Na/adt in the softwood pulp line and 8,5 kg COD/adt and 4,8 kg Na/adt in the soft wood pulp line, where no more content could be removed. Both pulp lines washed efficient with aspect of COD, but the hardwood pulp line washed more efficient in the aspect of natrium compared to the softwood pulp line. In the last washing step, both pulp lines had removed 98% of the ingoing COD from the digester. With aspect to natrium the softwood pulp line had removed 86% and the hardwood pulp line 93% in the last washing step. The evaluation of the different washing equipment showed that the DD-filter in the hardwood pulp line was the most efficient with aspect of both COD and Sodium, followed by the PO-press. In the softwood pulp line, filter 2 was the most efficient regarding both COD and Sodium. The flow- and mass balances turned out to be complicated at some of the washing steps, especially around the Q1-press in the hardwood pulp line and press 1-3 and filter 2 in the softwood pulp line. The reason for this could be that different functional chemicals are added before the Q1-press, which was not considered in this study, additional causes could be unidentified flows that affect the balances. The study was limited to only analyze three streams and calculate the fourth, an analyze of all the streams would give a more accurate result. However, the study provides a good overview of the wash efficiency in the pulp mill.

Designed around you : User Friendly Replenishment of Washer FluidBrorsson-Pierre, Hampus, Åhlund, Kristoffer January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis concerns the development of a refilling position and solution, for washer fluid. As well as a study and development of the use of a secondary washer fluid for winter and summer use. The focus of this work, however, has been on the development of the regular washer fluid with regards to creating a user-friendly ergonomic solution with a premium feel, that improves the user experience and simplifies the refilling process for the user. The automotive industry today is constantly evolving and always strive to improve their products in most areas when it comes to the environment and their clients, etc. Despite this, the process of refilling washer fluid has not been developed in the modern automotive history. The refilling of washer fluid today, looks the same as it ”always” has done. This takes place under hood in a small dirty compartment, with a relatively small tube opening where the user must aim the washer fluid when pouring. To get there, the user must carry out several unnecessary steps to get under the bonnet, where the user does not necessarily have anything to do. This, even though other areas around the washer fluid has evolved a lot, in terms of wiper blades and washer fluid nozzles. The work is done with Volvo Cars Cooperation as clients. Volvo Cars is a Swedish car manufacturer that manufactures passenger cars, which they have done since 1927, when the company started. They are aiming to become the world’s most modern and attractive premium car brand, a leader in innovation and people-centered development. They strive to make the life easier and more enjoyable for their users. Since Volvo has the intention to always improve their products to their users and make life easier for them, this project has used a human-centered design process. The work was done together with the demands and requests from the involved departments at Volvo Cars as well as customer surveys and interviews with mechanics. To find a solution that satisfies all stakeholders and Standards it required an iterative approach and design work. The work resulted in two concepts where both ordinary and secondary washer fluid can be filled, these prototypes were made and built into a Volvo XC60, 3D renderings of these, as well as an interface for the secondary washer fluid. These solutions have made the process of refilling washer easier with less steps for the and gives a feeling of a premium and innovative solution.

Life cycle assessment: main methods and comparative study between the plastic and stainless steel of the washer machine\'s basketBortolin, Anderson Ricardo 28 May 2009 (has links)
The products can cause negative impacts to the environment in one of their stages of the life cycle, which are: raw material acquisition, production, distribution, use and final disposition. The integration of the environmental aspects in the project and in the product development it looks for to prevent and to minimize the possible impacts along his life cycle. Those impacts vary as for the category, magnitude, extension and duration. The main methodology to evaluate the environmental impacts of the life cycle of the product is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). However there are several methods and forms of applications of this methodology. The first objective is to identify the main methods of LCA, through a systematic revision, THE second is to accomplish a study of comparative case of LCA among two types of baskets (of plastic and of stainless steel) used in the washers of automatic clothes, identifying the potentials environmental impacts, based on the method EDIP. The main identified methods in the systematic revision were: Echo-indicator 99, EPS, CML Ecological Footprint and EDIP. The comparison of the cycle of life of the two baskets demonstrates that, for the categories of impacts of potential of global warming, acidification, nutrient enrichment, ecotoxicity and human toxicity, the basket stainless steel has a larger contribution for the potencies environmental impacts in relation to the basket of plastic, mainly due to the largest transported distance of the raw material of the steel to the production of the basket.
