Estimativa da retenção de água no solo a partir do uso de equipamentos não convencionais, redes neurais artificiais e funções de pedotransferência / Water retention soil estimate using nonconventional equipment, artificial neural networks and pedotransfer functions

Antonio Angelotti Netto 06 September 2007 (has links)
Economic development and increasing agricultural productivity have intensified the use of chemical products in farming. The quantification environmental impact of these products requires the use of models that describe the flow of water and solutes in the unsaturated region of the soil. For this purpose, one of the most effective parameters belong to the water retention curve of the soil. The purpose of this work was to develop pedotransfer functions (PTFs) to estimate the retention of water by soils of the hydrographic microbasin of the Canchim river, in the municipality of São Carlos, state of São Paulo, Brazil, based on artificial neural networks (ANNs). The physical attributes, granulometry (clay, silt and sand), density and resistance to penetration of LVAd, LVe, LVdf and NVef soils, managed with and without vegetal cover and under forest, were determined using nonconventional equipment at Embrapa Instrumentação Agropecuária in São Carlos, SP. These parameters were used as input variables for two artificial neural networks. The soils\' water retention curves were also obtained using a Richards pressure chamber and computed tomography, as well as their total porosity and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. A soil granulometric analyzer and a penetrometer allied to TDR provided a large number of data. The soils\' physical attributes displayed a wide variability as a function of their granulometric constitution and adopted managements. The ANNs were effective in developing PTFs able to estimate the water retention based on the large number of basic soil properties.

However, the establishment of SWRCs is laborious and time consuming, besides being costly. A alternative is its estimate through statistical equations called Pedotransfer Functions (PTFs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of some existing PTFs, in predicting the soil water retention and to capture its spatial variability structure, using geostatistical tools, when applied in a lowland soil of the south region of Brazil. For this, an experimental 10 x 10 m grid was established and soil disturbed and undisturbed samples were collected in the 0-0.20 m soil depth, totaling 100 experimental points. The following soil attributes were determined in each point: soil texture, soil organic carbon, pH, cation exchange capacity, soil bulk density, and the soil water retention curve. Eight developed PTFs for estimating gravimetric soil water content, eight for estimating volumetric water content and five for estimating the van Genuchten model parameters were evaluated using the statistical measures mean error (ME), and the root mean square error (RMSE). Results indicated that the Oliveira et al. (2002) PTF presented the best performance for estimating the gravimetric soil water content at the tension of 33kPa, with mean error (ME) value of 0.0136g.g-1, while for the gravimetric water content at tension of 1500kPa the Pidgeon (1972) FPT was the best, with ME value of -0,0054g.g-1. Concerning to the potential of describing the spatial variability structure the Bell & van Keulen (1995 and 1996) and of Urach (2007) PTFs presented the best performance based on the results from the cross validation technique. For estimating the soil water volumetric content at the tension of 10kPa the Tomasela et al. (2002) was the best (ME of 0.019cm3.cm-3), while Rawls et al. (1982) and van den Berg et al. (1997) PTFs were the best for estimating soil water content at the tension of 33kPa (ME of 0.001cm3.cm-3) and 1500kPa (ME of -0.008cm3.cm-3), respectively. The range and sill geostatistical parameters for the tension of 33kPa were reasonable estimated, while for the tension of 1500kPa they were underestimated by the evaluated PTFs. The Parametric Pedotransfer Function constructed by Vereecken et al.(1989) presented the lowest value of ME (0.0247cm3.cm-3), while the Hodnett and Tomasella (2002) PTF presented the lowest value of RMSE (0.0367 cm3.cm-3). Both PTFs well described the experimental semivariograms of the soil water content at the tensions of 10kPa and 33kPa, however their performance was not good for the tension of 1500kPa.

Experimental Study on the Engineering Properties of Gelfill

Abdul-Hussain, Najlaa January 2011 (has links)
Gelfill (GF) is made of tailings, water, binder and chemical additives (Fillset, sodium silicate gel). The components of GF are combined and mixed on the surface and transported (by gravity and/or pumping) to the underground mine workings, where the GF can be used for both underground mine support and tailings storage. Thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) properties are important performance criteria of GF. The understanding of these engineering properties and their evolution with time are still limited due to the fact that GF is a new cemented backfill material. In this thesis, the evolution of the thermal, hydraulic, mechanical, and microstructural properties of small GF samples are determined. Various binder contents of Portland cement type I (PCI) are used. The GF is cured for 3, 7, 28, 90, and 120 days. It is found that the thermal, hydraulic and mechanical properties are time-dependent or affected by the degree of binder hydration index. Furthermore, a relationship is found between the compressive strength and the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the GF samples. The unsaturated hydraulic properties of GF samples have also been investigated. The outcomes show that unsaturated hydraulic conductivity is influenced by the degree of binder hydration index and binder content, especially at low suction ranges. Simple functions are proposed to predict the evolution of air-entry values (AEVs), residual water content, and fitting parameters from the van Genuchten model with the degree of hydration index (α). Furthermore, two columns are built to simulate the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behaviour of GF under drained and undrained conditions. The obtained results from the GF columns are compared with the small samples. It is observed that the mechanical properties, hydraulic properties (suction and water content), and temperature development are strongly coupled. The magnitude of these THM coupling factors is affected by the size of the GF. The findings also show that the mechanical, hydraulic and thermal properties of the GF columns are different from samples cured in plastic moulds.

Vliv etherů celulózy na vlastnosti hydraulického vápna / Effect of cellulose ethers on properties of hydraulic lime

Skoupil, Jakub January 2019 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the study of the influence of cellulose ethers on the properties of hydraulic lime mortars. The availability and price of cellulose ethers in the industrial market is very favorable, but we can´t meet with studies using cellulose ethers in building materials, where lime is used as a binder. Cellulose ethers are commonly used as thickening agents in cement-based materials. The purpose of this diploma thesis is to review if cellulose ethers are appropriate for use in hydraulic lime mortars, either as water retention agents that contribute by water retention to better hydration of hydraulic binder components or to affect the properties of mortar in the fresh state. The theoretical part is dedicated to cellulose ethers, especially their production and how they influence the properties of building materials. In the practical part, the thesis deals with the influence of the dose of five different types of cellulose ethers on the properties of hydraulic lime. The properties in the fresh state and the physical-mechanical properties of mortars were monitored over time.

Etude théorique et numérique du comportement poro-plastique endommageable non saturé des géomatériaux : application au stockage de déchets radioactifs / Numerical and theoretical study of unsaturated damageable poro-viscoplastic behaviour of geomaterials : application on storage of radioactive waste

Bui, Tuan Anh 17 November 2014 (has links)
This thesis aims to study the damageable hydromechanical behavior of unsaturated geomaterials. More precisely, the research is applied to study the behavior of underground galleries of radioactive waste disposals in deep geological formations. Firstly, after summarizing the main features of the hydro-mechanical behavior of geomaterials, emphasizing the effect of suction and damage, a new model PPE-N coupling hydromechanical interactions with plasticity and isotropic damage is presented. Established in the framework of thermodynamics of porous media, it is based on the concept of the so called plastic effective stress and equivalent pore pressure. Assuming a bimodal pore size distribution for cracked porous media and using the concept of bundle cylindrical capillaries, damage effects on hydraulic behaviour (water retention curve and hydraulic conductivity) is modelled using phenomenological functions. The accountance of the contributions to the interfacial energy from the mechanical internations between solid and fluid phases (via theequivalent pore pressure) as well as the physico-chemical mechanism of water retention (via the water retention function) enables this model to describe in apertinent manner bilateral couplings between them.Secondly, this constitutive model is applied to Callovo- Oxfordian argillite, which is the potential host rock for the French nuclear waste disposal, and then to study the evolution of the hydromechanical responses of an underground gallery according to its simplified life cycle. The model is first validated against a range of mechanical and hydraulic laboratory tests, considering "homogeneous" samples. The analytical approach is then used to provide an exact reference solution of this problem in the limiting case of a saturated poro-viscoplastic host rock. This solution allows to better understand the effect of creep on the behavior of the gallery and also to test the precision of other complex numerical solutions . Finally, the numerical approach using finite elemnts is used to implement the new model EPP-NS in a computer code originally developed in LGCB (Laboratoire Genie Civil et Batiment). Its validity is partly checked by examining the poroelastic behavior of an unlined tunnel where quasi-analytical solutions have been developed. Parametric studies in the generalcase of a lined tunnel demonstrate the consistency of the model and highlight the influence of desaturation on the behavior of the gallery.

Bornkampf, Constance 18 November 2013 (has links)
Soil is an important ecosystem and at the same time filter and storage for water. With respect to flood and erosion prevention, it is important to improve water retention and infiltration rates in soils to reduce surface run-off. The aim of the study is to quantify the influence of biogenic macropores on infiltration. The effect of the cropping system and management practices on macropore density and infiltration rate was examined. Soil hydraulic conductivity was determined by soil column experiments and field investigations using a hood infiltrometer and rainfall-simulation experiments. Macropores have a great effect on hydraulic conductivity. A large macropore-density results in high infiltration rates. This relationship is described with the skinfactor, applying the Erosion-2D model to adjust infiltration rates. Conservative agricultural management practices show positive effects on earthworm population and hence macropore density. The beneficial effects of no-tillage include less soil disturbance, greater quantities of crop-residues remaining on the soil surface and increased soil moisture.:Abkürzungs- und Symbolverzeichnis Tabellenverzeichnis Abbildungsverzeichnis Danksagung Summary 1 Einleitung 1.1 Motivation und Ziel der Arbeit 2 Stand des Wissens 2.1 Grundlagen zum Wasserfluss im Boden 2.1.1 Beschreibung des Infiltrationsprozesses im Boden 2.2 Definition des Begriffes Makropore, deren Entstehung und Einflüsse im Boden 2.2.1 Zusammenhang zwischen Bodenbearbeitung und dem Vorhandensein von Makroporen 2.2.2 Einfluss der Makroporen auf den Wasserfluss und die Infiltration 2.3 Ansätze zur Modellierung des Makroporenflusses 2.3.1 Dual-Porositäts-Modelle 2.3.2 Einfache empirische Schätzverfahren 3 Material und Methoden 3.1 Standorte 3.2 Geländeversuche 3.2.1 Erfassung bodenphysikalischer Parameter 3.2.2 Ermittlung der hydraulischen Leitfähigkeit 3.2.2.1 Haubeninfiltrometermessungen 3.2.2.2 Beregnungsversuche 3.2.3 Erfassung des Makroporensystems 3.3 Säulenversuche 3.3.1 Vorversuche 3.3.2 Experimente mit L. terrestris 3.3.3 Experimente mit künstlichen Makroporen 3.3.4 Experimente ohne Makroporen 3.4 Ableitung des Modellparameters Skinfaktor 4 Ergebnisse 4.1 Ergebnisse der Geländeversuche am Standort Lüttewitz 4.1.1 Bodenphysikalische Parameter 4.1.2 Beregnungsexperimente 4.1.3 Hydraulische Leitfähigkeit 4.1.4 Makroporensystem 4.1.5 Auswertung der Tracerversuche am Standort Lüttewitz 4.2 Ergebnisse der Geländeversuche Standort Oberwinkel 4.2.1 Bodenphysikalische Parameter 4.2.2 Beregnungsexperimente 4.2.3 Makroporensystem 4.2.4 Skinfaktorenermittlung 4.3 Ergebnisse aus den Säulenversuchen 4.3.1 Verteilung der Grabgänge 4.3.2 Messung der hydraulischen Leitfähigkeit 5 Interpretation und Diskussion der Ergebnisse 5.1 Experimente im Gelände 5.1.1 Vergleich der kf-Werte aus Haubeninfiltrometermessung und Beregnung 5.2 Auswertung und Interpretation der Ergebnisse aus den Säulenversuchen 5.3 Vergleich Makroporenkennwerte mit bodenhydrologischen Messgrößen 5.4 Vergleich Makroporenkennwerte mit Modellparametern 5.5 Einfluss der Bewirtschaftung 6 Zusammenfassung Literaturverzeichnis

Komplex opatření v povodí Javornického potoka pro zlepšení kvality vody v malé vodní nádrži Rosnička / Set of arrangements in Javornický stream floodplain for Rosnička pond water quality improvement

Špaček, Ondřej January 2022 (has links)
This thesis deals with the projection of water management and erosion control measures in the Javornický stream floodplain to improve water quality in the Rosnička pond near the town of Svitavy. In the teoretical part, the author summarized current practices in the areas of small river restorations and protection against soil erosion in the Czech Republic. In the practical part, the analasis of the area was first made, including the analysis of natural conditions, hydroecological monitoring of watercourses according to the HEM 2014 method and quantification of soil loss conditions according to the USLE method. Then, revitalization measures on the Javornický stream were designed to improve the self-purification of water and the restoration of ground water in the floodplain, as well as two variants of erosion control measures on agricultural areas to reduce the input of sediments into the hydrographic network. Finally, conceptual and technical recommendations for the implementation of these measures were formulated, as a basis for planning and decision-making of the political leadership of the town of Svitavy.

Investigating the Need for Drainage Layers in Flexible Pavements

Masoud Seyed Mohammad Ghavami (6531011) 10 June 2019 (has links)
<p>Moisture can significantly affect flexible pavement performance. As such, it is crucial to remove moisture as quickly as possible from the pavements, mainly to avoid allowing moisture into the pavement subgrade. In the 1990s the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) adopted an asphalt pavement drainage system consisting of an open-graded asphalt drainage layer connected to edge drains and collector pipes to remove moisture from the pavement system.</p> <p>Over the intervening two decades, asphalt pavement materials and designs have dramatically changed in Indiana, and the effectiveness of the pavements drainage system may have changed. Additionally, there are challenges involved in producing and placing open-graded asphalt drainage layers. They can potentially increase costs, and they tend to have lower strength than traditional dense-graded asphalt pavement layers. </p> <p>Given the potential difficulties, the overall objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of the INDOT’s current flexible pavement drainage systems given the changes to pavement cross-sections and materials that have occurred since the open-graded drainage layer was adopted. Additionally, the effectiveness of the filter layer and edge drains were examined.</p><p><br>Laboratory experiments were performed to obtain the hydraulic properties of field-produced asphalt mixture specimens meeting INDOT’s current specifications. The results were used in finite element modeling of moisture flow through pavement sections. Modeling was also performed to investigate the rutting performance of the drainage layers under various traffic loads and subgrade moisture conditions in combination with typical Indiana subgrade soils. The modeling results were used to develop a design tool that can assist the pavement designer in more accurately assessing the need for pavement drainage systems in flexible pavements.<br></p>

Padrão sazonal da qualidade do solo, água, regimes térmicos e desempenho de culturas para biocombustíveis sob diferentes práticas de manejo / Seasonal pattern of soil quality, soil water and thermal regimes and performance of biofuel crops under different management practices

Awe, Gabriel Oladele 15 September 2014 (has links)
The intensification of biofuel production causes negative impacts on soil quality, thus the soil requires adequate assessment to ascertain its quality status, however site-specific nature of results in literature requires independent soil property measurement and assessment depending on specific agroecosystem and management goals. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate seasonal pattern of soil quality, soil water and thermal regimes and performance of sugarcane and tung crops at the experimental station of Soils Department, Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. The sugarcane experiment (three seasons) was established in 2010 under no-tillage; no-tillage + compaction; conventional tillage and chiseling treatments in a randomized complete block design with three replications. In years 2011 and 2012, there was no soil disturbance; however residue mulching was imposed, giving split-plot design. The tung-based cropping system (two seasons, 2012-2014) was a randomized complete block design experiment with four replications. The treatments were: tung-crambe-sunflower/soybean + inorganic fertilizer; tung-crambe-sunflower/soybean + organic manure; tung-oats-peanut; and sole tung (control). Crambe and oats were planted in winter while sunflower (1st year)/soybean (2nd year) and peanut were planted in summer. Disturbed and undisturbed (using cores of known volume) soil samples were collected from soil layers 0-10, 10-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm in sugarcane, and 0-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 and 60-80 cm in tung for the laboratory determination of soil quality indicators. There was field monitoring of soil water retention, matric potential and soil temperature and agronomic parameters measured include sugarcane yield and tung plant height. Minimum data set for soil quality assessment was made using principal component analysis and soil quality index was obtained using weighted additive method. The temporal patterns of soil water storage and temperature were evaluated using algorithms for time series data. Except for Ma in 0-10 cm layer of tillage plots, both tillage and residue mulching did not significantly affect (p<0.05) the soil quality indicators, overall soil quality, water retention and sugarcane yield. The degree of compaction was not enough to limit sugarcane growth. Residue retention significantly influenced temporal processes of soil temperature and state-time analysis was better than classical regression of time series analysis of soil water storage and temperature. Cropping system did not significantly influence (p<0.05) soil quality indicators, overall SQI and tung plant height, but significant influenced soil water retention. For the two experiments, there was no discernible trend in the seasonal values of soil hydro-physical variables and crop response.

Uhde, Leonir Terezinha 28 August 2009 (has links)
The present work was accomplished in a slope with a pedological system composed of Red Argisol/Gleysol, in a pasture area located in an unit of agricultural production in the municipal district of Santa Maria - RS. It aimed at the characterization morphologic and the physic-hydrical and the discretization of the variability of the loss of soil of the slope. Thirteen aligned profiles were selected in a toposequency, of a total of 57, reconstituted by the polls method. After description the approach of the pedologic system in the thirteen profiles, considering the vertical and lateral succession of the verified horizons, the samples were collected for the chemical and physical-hydrical determinations in laboratory (texture, densities, porosities, retention hydrical and availability of water, saturated hydraulic conductivity and permeability to the air), in three sampling orientations. Furthermore, the soil losses were estimated through the coupling of the Universal Equation of Loss of the Soil - RUSLE, in SIG atmosphere. In the toposequency, three profiles were classified as Gleysol and the others as Red Argisol. Argisols and Gleysols presented variated chemical and physical limitations, producing strong use limitation. The horizons Bt in Argissolos are found in different depths in the studied profiles, implicating different behaviors, depending on the thickness of the horizons upper (suprajacente) The physical-hydrical dynamics of the system is marked by a different behavior among the surface (loam) and the subsurface (clayer), and it should be understood, considering the group of the horizons of each profile, to predict the physical-hydrical behavior of the soil. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of the soil presented a variation along the horizons of the soil profiles in different positions of the landscape, with great differences among the values observed in surface in relation to the ones of the subsurface, identifying the existence of a lateral flow of water in the soil, mainly in the portion of the hillside and its space variation in a topographical sequence. In the podzolic cover, the blockade of vertical drainage occurs in the top of the horizon Bt, generating a more humid zone above. The smallest retention of water in all the profiles occured in the loam horizons, Ap and A1, in all the tensions, while in the deepest horizons, Bt1 and Bt2, there was a larger retention as a consequence of the decrease of the sand tenor and increase of the clay tenor. The transition horizons, AB and BA, presented an intermediate behavior. The available water in the soil for the plants was influenced directly by the texture, which increased with the increment of the sand fraction and it decreases with the increase of the clay fraction. With the drier of the soil the permeability to the air tends to increase due to the drainage of the water of the pores which start to conduct air, being highly dependent of the macroporosity. The animal trampling and the preparation operations promoted an increase of the soil density, resulting in the reduction of the total porosity and of the macroporosity and consequently an increase in the microporosity in the horizons Ap and A1, which suffer the direct effects of the anthropic activity. The methodology application that engagement RUSLE in atmosphere SIG, allowed the discretization of the space variability of the factors that determine the losses, as well as the soil losses in a slope of the Central Depression of RS.
