A market analysis for a weekly women's newspaper in South AfricaNxumalo, Lerato 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research study presents an empirical quantitative research aimed primarily at establishing whether there is a need for a weekly professional and business women's newspaper. Due to the scope and costs of doing a national research, this research was narrowed to the Western Cape's Cape metropolitan region. This research is therefore a pilot study which is to provide foundations for a representative research project.
A structured questionnaire-based survey was designed and used to gather data that would answer the research question. This survey was distributed amongst 200 professional women, business women and women aspiring to these positions and who are currently reading newspapers within the Cape Metropole. The questionnaire was divided into three sections. The first section was the screening section which was to ensure that all respondents are within the target group. This was followed by the demographic section which was to establish the backgrounds of respondents and the newspaper readership patterns section which aimed to understand women's readership patterns and also to answer the research questions.
Findings from the survey revealed that there is a potential market for a weekly professional and business women's newspaper, as 82 percent of the 200 respondents indicated that they would be willing to buy a newspaper targeted at women. Results also revealed that these women mainly read newspapers on a Sunday. In addition the majority (65%) of the respondents indicated that they would prefer a women's newspaper to be a weekly publication. This implies that a weekly professional and business women's newspaper is a potentially viable business proposition.
Although the results and literature supports the view that professional and business women are a growing market and that they are generally not satisfied with the current newspaper offerings in the market, this research is a pilot research study and should be followed by a larger scale research project to investigate this topic and better understand the needs of women. Moreover, future studies will establish more precisely the size of this market and establish whether it makes business sense to pursue this proposition.

Sedghi, Mona January 2010 (has links)

“VeckoRevyn – your best friend in good times and bad?” is a BA thesis based on a weekly lifestyle magazine, VeckoRevyn, with a female demographic aged 18-25. Issues of the magazine, published in 2009 and on, is analyzed and dissected to better understand and be able to get answers for the questions of issue. What is said in the magazine, and how does the message reach the audience? Furthermore, the message, as well as the tone used to convey it, is reviewed as part of the discussion about consequence. The goal of this study is to show how, based on the material analyzed, a woman is spoken to in the magazine, and what kind of consequences this might have.

VeckoRevyn claims it desires tobea close friend to its readers, a friend who enlightens and guides. But the fact is that in every case studied, there is an underlying message on how the readers have the chance to reach something better and more desirable based on her looks and appearance. How is this possible when in fact the magazine creates an artificial reality filled with unattainable ideals? This results in more stress in the lives of women, who constantly long to be “good enough”. The idea of beauty, which is a common theme throughout the issues of the magazine, is unfortunately based on a myth. This in turn results in mental exhaustion, a twisted self- image, low self esteem, anorexia and bulimia among its young female audience.

Keywords: weekly magazine, VeckoRevyn, content, tone, the beauty myth, ideals, consequences

News Magazine Use Of and Attitudes Toward Leaks in their Coverage of the Decline and Fall of Spiro T. AgnewFredd, James B. 08 1900 (has links)
This study is a content analysis of the coverage in Time, Newsweek, and U. S. News & World Report on Spiro Agnew from August 13 to October 22, 1973, and is concerned with the use of leaks as determined by analyzing the levels of attribution and the attitudes of the magazines toward leaks. All three magazines used approximately equivalent amounts of material from concealed sources. Time and Newsweek defended the use of leaks; U. S. News & World Report attacked their use. The perils inherent in using information from concealed sources make it necessary to consult as many sources as feasible when following a controversial story.

The diploma thesis Content changes of Reflex weekly according to the influence of its editors in chief focuses on the changes which this Czech magazine has gone through from its founding in 1990 to 2013 - during these twenty three years the position of editor in chief changed six times, passing from one person to another. The development of this thesis was based on the supposition that each of the personalities has left their mark on the magazine and has influenced its content according to their experience and preferences. In the theoretical part, the thesis deals with history of the magazine, with changes of editors in chief, the publishers, visual aspects, with the composition of editorial team or magazine sections and also with magazine's direct competitors and the number of editions sold. The following chapter focuses on the theoretical context of the research and refers to the analytical part. Terms as neutrality, negativity and agenda settings are being defined here and the impact of commercialization on visual aspect of the print media is being discussed in this chapter as well. The next part is based on the quantitative content analysis and it examines magazine content in specific periods; both the first and last three months of each editor in chief's era. The object of this dissertation is to describe development of the press in urban district Klatovy during 1918 - 1941 for example the weekly newspaper Šumavan. By political and social background we are going to explain development of this weekly newspaper from his beginning to his cessation and to describe character of the newspaper. We are also going to give attention to figure of a founder, an owner and an editor Maxmilián Čermák and his son Otakar Čermák. Patriotic thinking at the beginning of 60's in 19th century in Klatovy gave the incentive to foundation of the first Czech printing office in Klatovy in autumn 1867. The Czech printing office was the essential step for foundation of Czech-written periodical which would spread thoughts and interest in well-being of the whole Bohemia Forest area. To foundation and continuance of the first Czech newspapers in south-western Bohemia (except Pilsen) contributed patriotic thinking grammar school profesors and rich citizens from Klatovy who were concentrated around guild Měšťanská beseda. The weekly newspaper Šumavan was publicated during 1868 - 1941 if we don't count the last issue which was publicated on 19th May 1945 to liberation of Czechoslovakia. There were two approximately four years' intervals by reason of war censorship in the long life of the...

Obraz životního stylu 60.let na stránkách týdeníku Vlasta / Image of the lifestyle of the sixties according to Vlasta weekly magazineBlinková, Karolína January 2013 (has links)
My master thesis examines lifestyle in the sixties of the 20th century as depicted on pages of Vlasta weekly magazine. Vlasta has been published since 1947 and thanks to the long continuity and grounding in the Czech environment, it is considered to be a traditional magazine. It has gained and maintained its broad network of readers throughout the years and is considered to be a leading magazine of Czechoslovak women during the communist era. In my thesis, I focus on the content analysis of the magazine in years 1960 - 1968. The thesis is set in a historical, social and media context. I emphasize the topics that are closely related to lifestyle. The areas that determine the lifestyle and on which I focus are, in particular, housing issues, workload, family relations, education, fashion, art and leisure time. I have also covered questions involving emancipation of women and their position in society. I also deal with the question whether the image of the lifestyle as presented by the Vlasta magazine matched the actual lifestyle of people in the sixties. In addition, I examine whether the magazine actually fulfilled the role of a weekly magazine for women, as it is well known that Vlasta was under the political supervision. The thesis is divided into two parts, the theoretical and analytical. The...

"Listen to the Wild Discord": Jazz in the Chicago Defender and the Louisiana Weekly, 1925-1929Waits, Sarah A. 17 May 2013 (has links)
This essay will use the views of two African American newspaper columnists, E. Belfield Spriggins of the Louisiana Weekly and Dave Peyton of the Chicago Defender, to argue that though New Orleans and Chicago both occupied a primary place in the history of jazz, in many ways jazz was initially met with ambivalence and suspicion. The struggle between the desire to highlight black achievement in music and the effort to adhere to tenets of middle class respectability play out in their columns. Despite historiographical writings to the contrary, these issues of the influence of jazz music on society were not limited to the white community. Tracing these columnists through the years of 1925-1929, a critical point in the popularity of jazz, reveals how considerations of black innovation and economic autonomy helped alter their opinions from criticism to ownership.

Porovnání proměn obsahu Týdeníku Československé televize v letech 1989 a 1990 / Comparison of changes in content of weekly Czechoslovakian television schedule magazine between years 1989 and 1990Bednařík Štefl, Aneta January 2019 (has links)
This thesis compares two selected editions of a programme journal Czechoslovakian Television Weekly, specifically years 1989 and 1990. This journal had been issued between years 1965 and 1990 and used to be one of the main sources of a television programme of the Czechoslovakian Television, which was daily watched in many households. Except for the television programme, the journal also dealt with society-wide questions and this made it even more attractive to readers. As a result there was no shortage of readers, nor viewers of the television. Thanks to the vast popularity among readers as well as a close link to the Czechoslovakian Television, the journal was one of the tools to influence the public opinion. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the level of influence of changing political-economical- social situation in Czechoslovakia to journal editions of years 1989 and 1990. After the theoretical foundations that guide readers to understand examined documents and society-wide circumstances, the thesis identifies sections of the journal that are relevant for the analysis and subsequently in the practical part introduces the analysis of relevant sections of the journal. For each section, there is an analysis of both examined editions of the journal and by comparing them is reached a...

Previous issue date: 2007-04-18 / This dissertation analysis how the weekly magazine Veja builds the urban violence
thematic. Fights, traffic accidents, robberies, thefts and kidnapping are considered
acts of urban violence, probably followed by death. Studies were carried out on
cover stories that fit in this thematic, some because of the interest on crimes that had
big media coverage such as kidnappings and murders, some because it relates urban
violence to social-economical themes such as poverty and public security, during the
period of 1968 to December 2005. Using the semiotics theory (Denis Bertrand, José
Luiz Fiorin, Eric Landowski, Ana Claudia de Oliveira e Diana Luz Pessoa de
Barros), research analyzed how Veja builds the theme and the figures of urban
violence and criminality; outlined, under the magazine enunciator s perspective,
which are the causes and solutions for the urban violence problem (historical and
social factors); investigated the communication contracts established between the
magazine and its readers; from the narrative point of view, outlined who the subjects
and their objects of value are, and how these subjects are modalized; and marked out
the passional path of the narrative subjects, what passions move them: their fears,
attitudes, threats and believes related to the question of violence / Esta dissertação analisa discursivamente como a revista semanal Veja constrói a
Utilizando
