Researching an overlooked workforce in a university : catering, caretaking and securtiyMeakin, Susan Elizabeth January 2012 (has links)
The people who service the physical needs of university populations and maintain their built environment are barely acknowledged in the research into university life. An observed dissonance between university staff encountered on the ground and those appearing in the literature prompted this research into the work experience of university catering, caretaking and security staff. This thesis is based on a case study which investigated perceptions of this experience in an English university. Consideration was given to the contribution of these staff to the social and learning aspects of the institution. The research was positioned within the theoretical tension between the structural nature of the social determinants of work, and individual subjective responses to working practices. The format of the study was guided by Paul Edwards’ consideration of the components of a useful labour process analysis. The research strategy was an inductive single case study, drawing on ethnographic traditions of observation and conversation, supplemented by the perusal of documents. A first phase of familiarisation was followed by a second stage of interviews, participant and non-participant observation. Forty-five staff were directly engaged with the research with informal observations and conversations with others. Thematic analysis was used to consider data across the case study. English universities have been subject to structural change which have created large, fragmented and dispersed populations and impacted on the ways that the built environment is used. The formal work activities of these staff enabled the University to open and operate securely. They contributed to the social processes of the institution through their interactions with staff, students, customers and visitors. It is argued that they also had a valuable role in establishing a friendly, welcoming, supportive environment for students through discretionary, activity during frequent encounters. The work of these staff was closely structured as to time, place and task. These everyday social interactions provided an autonomous opportunity to craft their work environment and develop relationships whose significance is insufficiently explored in the current literature on low paid and low status work.

The look to space and architecture, built on the thought of Hospitality, is a look that seeks the dimension of openness and fluidity of the place; it is a perspective that goes beyond the materiality and geometry themselves and enters the subtle human and lived dimension of space. In this work, through the narration of the experience of being received in Vila Tronco, community of Porto Alegre, I seek to reveal the welcome forms expressed in this informal and spontaneous territory, a outlying place from the rest of the city. From the thought of Levinas, Derrida and Deleuze, I start with a distant and cartographic view of the slum, to further enter the territory – I search to identify, through Fernando Fuão´s perspective of welcome forms, the affective gathering places of the community. With a powerful ability of reconstitution, the slum creates and recreates forms of welcome, large openings, clearings amid the often enclosed and hostile space. The duplication process of the large Tronco Avenue has absorbed much of the territory of the slum, which is positioned nearby. Even so, the community expresses a lucid receptive attitude, opening up to the other and building a new frontier, a new relationship surface.

Previous issue date: 2010-04-09 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior / This research has as main proposal to verify how the virtue of generosity, considered as one of the important aspects of moral development on children, shows itself in children between four and six years old in institutional welcome condition. Toward this aim, knowledge in Human Development Psychology, specifically Jean Piaget and his contemporary collaborators, were associated to philosophic knowledge, with emphasis in Kant and Aristotle. The research took place in an institutional welcome service in the town of Natal-RN, between February and May of 2009, witch is responsible to offer care to children from zero till six years old. As procedure were used: the rulebased game Memory Game ; the childhood story One note fight ; and observations of the institution s everyday. The corpus analysis was done by the Thematic Content Analysis method. In general, in the daily observations, children showed themselves more co-operative and generous than in the executed procedures, mainly when the matter subject was other?s well-being. The duty, Kantian perspective, was overcome by the Aristotelian sumo bem, classified as generous act of afford to other what is not posted as right, however guaranteed by solidarity / Esta pesquisa tem como proposta central verificar como a virtude generosidade, considerada aqui como um dos aspectos importantes do desenvolvimento moral na crian?a, se apresenta em crian?as de quatro a seis anos de idade em situa??o de acolhimento institucional.

[YOU ARE WITH] KIN AND [YOU CAN BE AT] EASEAl Ghussein, Abdul Azim 01 January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is an exploration of hospitality, sharing and acclimation within a studio art practice as a means of fostering consideration of others. I employ a practice whereby I disrupt the typical gallery context, and through the production and dissemination of consumable items from the Middle East, I examine how resources can be used, valued, and shared to accommodate various and unspecified others and provide opportunities for crossing thresholds of guest and host relationships.

[en] MOBILITY AND EVANGELIZATION: PASTORAL CARE PROVIDED TO BRAZILIAN CATHOLICS ABROAD: TAKING THE EXAMPLE OF BOSTON - NORTH AMERICA / [pt] MOBILIDADE E EVANGELIZAÇÃO: ATENDIMENTO PASTORAL DE BRASILEIROS CATÓLICOS NO EXTERIOR: O EXEMPLO DE BOSTON - AMÉRICA DO NORTEMURIALDO GASPARET 21 December 2018 (has links)
[en] The present thesis aimed at analyzing and answering, in the theological
sphere, how the Catholic Church exercises its evangelizing mission in favor of
migrants. Migration processes can be experiences of Christian living because in
the midst of mishaps, success and failure, may make human s encounter with God
possible, in Jesus Christ, in the concrete reality in which the being is found. This
way, the Catholic Church, in its pastoral action in favor of migrants, must be
characterized by gratuity, receptivity, mercy, justice and love, boosting what is the
best in human beings. In order to capture appropriately the material object, i.e.,
the reality of migration, the survey opted for sampling, focusing its attention to
the Brazilian migration executed to a particular area - Boston- Massachusetts- the
USA. Throughout fieldwork, with qualitative profile, and bibliographic study of
the major works that deal with the matter, tried to understand what occurs with
this specific reality of migration. As it is a theological thesis, the formal objective
was gathered at the nucleus of Christian experience, i.e., at the encounter with
Jesus Christ and adhesion to an ecclesial community and its consequences.
Gathering both objects of research we realized the importance of the relationship
between faith and culture, seeking to evaluate to what extent the immersion in a
new culture, in this case North American, implies in faith loss or change. The
migration process analyzed through Christian faith perspective leads to
overcoming the rigid and strict structures posed as barriers that limit the freedom
and the purpose of human existence in a diverse world. Therefore, instead of
building walls, bridge building to allow dialogue and exchanges that treasure life
are necessary. Distinguishing what effectively belongs to Christian experience and
what is cultural intervention to its living is essential.

Transfer Connections: Welcoming New Transfer StudentsJanuary 2016 (has links)
abstract: Focus has turned to the experiences of new transfer students in four-year institutions partially because of the mandate from President Obama for there to be more college graduates. Though transfer students are familiar with being college students, they still may not be accustomed to their new four-year institutions. At the time of this action research study, there were a very limited number of events to welcome new transfer students to the Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe campus. The purpose of this study was to create knowledge about the transition process of new transfer students to the Tempe campus. I worked with current transfer students to design a welcome event called Transfer Connections. By using a mixed methods design guided by retention and transition theories, a pre- and post-survey, individual interviews, and a focus group, I sought to answer questions about their transition process. In order to answer my research questions, this included exploring whether or not Transfer Connections had an influence on the success strategies they used, the type of support they gained, and their levels of feeling like they mattered. Since this was an action research study, I also explored my role as both a researcher and a practitioner. Results showed students did not learn specific success strategies, though they did learn about resources specific to ASU. The students also gained a level of support through the connections they made with other students. These connections influenced how the students felt they mattered to both ASU and other students. Future iterations of Transfer Connections will include more opportunities for new transfer students to develop connections. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2016
