Writing Self, Narrating History: Textual Politics in Jamaica Kincaid's Novels

Chen, Hsin-Chi 10 June 2002 (has links)
Abstract In this thesis, I attempt to examine Jamaica Kincaid¡¦s re-negotiation with the politics of power relations in her novels. Kncaid¡¦s novels, through the strategic deployment of autobiographical writing, redress the power dimension in the notions of self and history. The fact that Kincaid frames the field of power relations within the thematic recurrence of mother-daughter relations structures her novels in a way that conflates her personal stories with her group history. Moreover, such a structure emphatically registers the self-positioning act of Kincaid¡¦s writing as a strategy for survival. The first chapter explores how Kincaid mobilizes her self-writing as an act of political resistance. On the one hand, Kincaid opposes her writing which is delivered in the name of herself or her culture to the poststructuralist pronouncements of the general demise of a writing subject. On the other hand, Kincaid, through implicating the poststructuralist fracture of self in the protocol of decolonization, attempts to strategically inhabit in what Homi Bhabha calls the in-between space to define herself. The second chapter deals with the inscription of historical forces on the body. Foucault¡¦s genealogical unpacking of history in the body here helps to investigate how Kincaid¡¦s fictional alter egos bear and, more importantly, act out against the inscription of power. The third chapter focuses on the politics of Kincaid¡¦s autobiographical writing. At first, I unpack the relations between history and the politics of women¡¦s writing in the West Indies, and borrow the poststructuralist interrogation of Western historical knowledge to contradict the West¡¦s epistemological claims to West Indian history. And then I turn to the analysis of Kincaid¡¦s autobiographical writing, which, through its thematic deployment of mother-daughter relations, turns on the political empowerment in her strategic integration of her personal and collective history.

Weevils attack is one of the major factors responsible for low yield of brazilian banana plantations. Among them, there is the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus (Germar, 1824) (Coleoptera:Curculionidae), considered a major pest of banana, meet up widespread, causing damage in all producing countries, and Metamasius hemipterus (Linnaeus,1758) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), which in recent years has emerged as pest in banana plantation. Periodic monitoring of the population of these insects contribute to reduce the damage caused in banana plants, therefore, it becomes the producer to intervene in the management of the crop before the insect reaches the economic injury level. This present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of attractive baits for catching insects of the family Curculionidae, as well as monitor the population dynamics of C. sordidus and M. hemipterus on commercial banana plantation cv. Nanicão, in dry and rainy season, from May 2012 to April 2013, in conditions of the Amazon biome. Three treatments were used: 1) synthetic aggregation pheromone - as control; 2) sugarcane molasses and 3) sugarcane pieces, disposed in plots of 0.5 hectare each one. Among the tested baits, sugarcane molasses and sugarcane pieces were not effective to capture C. sordidus. However, the attractive bait sugarcane pieces proved efficient for monitoring and massal collect M. hemipterus in banana plantation. The population dynamics of C. sordidus, was positively influenced by rainfall, with higher population levels in the rainy season. Compared to M. hemipterus was observed that the insect population did not suffer any influence of climatic variables.

Multi-Scale Habitat Selection of Antillean Manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) in Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Southeastern Mexico

Gagnon, Émilie 06 September 2023 (has links)
The distribution of organisms across the globe forms non-random patterns that are based on their selection for certain environmental features. Habitat selection is the study of how organisms choose where they live. It is a fundamental behavior shaping several ecological and evolutionary processes. The hierarchical nature of the environment makes it imperative to consider multiple scales in habitat selection studies. Even though there is extensive coverage of scaling in habitat selection literature, most published papers only consider one scale. To our knowledge, habitat selection studies of the Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) have never included more than one spatial scale. Hence, we modeled Antillean manatee habitat selection in the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, in Mexico, at two spatial scales: study area and 1 km buffer. We used GPS coordinates of opportunistic encounters (n = 102) recorded since 2009. We randomly generated 500 pseudo-absences per presence point for both scales, and extracted the environmental conditions from each point: seagrass abundance (leaf area index or LAI), water depth, and shortest distance to land, closest river and closest resting hole. We fitted a binomial regression of the probability of presence as a function of the environmental parameters using a Bayesian approach. Our results show that the probability of manatee presence increases in proximity to resting holes for both scales and increases with land proximity at the large-scale. Overall, we showed that proximity to resting holes is the most important feature of habitat selection for Antillean manatees in Sian Ka'an, followed by proximity to land. This study demonstrates the importance of multi-scale designs in habitat selection and highlights the need for more studies looking at the use and ecological implications of manatee resting holes.

Les lacs insulaires du sud-ouest de l'océan indien, un enjeu pour la gestion durable de la ressource en eau / Island lakes in the south-west of the Indian ocean, an issue to sustainable management in water resource

Mathelin, Eric 17 December 2013 (has links)
The island lake constitutes an absolutely original geographical subject with its isolate system. It is a truefresh water reserve, that is more or less wide, inside narrow island areas dominated by a seaenvironment. Those lakes, which are from natural or anthropological origin, are inscribed in the complexproblem of the water resources of those narrow territories, that are subject to growing constraints –demography, urbanization, pollutions... Composed of very different islands, the South West of the IndianOcean makes up a privileged territory for a comparative analysis of those lakes and their place insideisland societies. First of all this work has allowed to list and classify the main bodies of water in the area. From a sample of lakes, their specificities have been examined to characterize their morphologies –lakeside depression and supply basin – their water performances and their ecosystem. This analysis hasallowed to highlight the mountainous and tropical dimensions and the weight of those lakes' endemism.Their typicality appears thanks to the intersecting of the components that can be added to the islandcontext in which the hydric stress imposes specific exploitation. The study of the actors, the managementpolicies and the island situation has allowed to better comprehend the place of the lake in the societies inthe South West of the Indian Ocean. Indeed those lakes, which have long been marginalized compared tothe coast, have progressively become an asset and a true medium to the development of those territories. The contrast of exploitations from a lake to another imposes a long-term reflection so that thepotentialities of those water bodies fit the sustainable needs of island populations.

This work had, as aim, the obtaining and characterization of West Indian cherry (Malphighia emarginata D.C) powder pulp and study the storage effect in the powder. The West Indian cherry powder was obtained by drying a solution containing 90% of West Indian cherry pulp and 10% of maltodextrin, in a spouted bed dryer, with drying air temperature of 70°C. The West Indian cherry pulp was physical-chemically characterized. by pH. soluble solids (°Brix), moisture content. total solids, total acidity, ascorbic acid. sugars reducers and ashes. The moisture adsorption isotherms of the West Indian cherry powder were determined in temperatures of 20°C, 25°C and 30°C, by gravimetric static method, using saturated salt solutions. The experimental data of isotherms were fitted with the BET, GAB, Oswin and Smith's equations, being classified as Type III according to BRUNAUER. The physical analysis of West Indian cherry powder was made by determination of density. repose angle, funnel discharge time and wettability whose demonstrated that the West Indian cherry powder is a high higroscopic product and has difficulty of flowability. In the study West Indian cherry powder storage, at room temperature, was observed, alter 60 days of storage, loss of 29.72% in the ascorbic acid content, increase of 51.31% in the moisture content, browning of the powder, this had been verified by the parameters of the color (L, a, b); the value of the pH varied during the storage, between 3.7 and 3.8.
