Efficient parameterized algorithms on structured graphs

Nelles, Florian 27 July 2023 (has links)
In classical complexity theory, the worst-case running times of algorithms depend solely on the size of the input. In parameterized complexity the goal is to refine the analysis of the running time of an algorithm by additionally considering a parameter that measures some kind of structure in the input. A parameterized algorithm then utilizes the structure described by the parameter and achieves a running time that is faster than the best general (unparameterized) algorithm for instances of low parameter value. In the first part of this thesis, we carry forward in this direction and investigate the influence of several parameters on the running times of well-known tractable problems. Several presented algorithms are adaptive algorithms, meaning that they match the running time of a best unparameterized algorithm for worst-case parameter values. Thus, an adaptive parameterized algorithm is asymptotically never worse than the best unparameterized algorithm, while it outperforms the best general algorithm already for slightly non-trivial parameter values. As illustrated in the first part of this thesis, for many problems there exist efficient parameterized algorithms regarding multiple parameters, each describing a different kind of structure. In the second part of this thesis, we explore how to combine such homogeneous structures to more general and heterogeneous structures. Using algebraic expressions, we define new combined graph classes of heterogeneous structure in a clean and robust way, and we showcase this for the heterogeneous merge of the parameters tree-depth and modular-width, by presenting parameterized algorithms on such heterogeneous graph classes and getting running times that match the homogeneous cases throughout.

Active rectification and control of magnetization currents in synchronous generators with rotating exciters : Implementation of the SVPWM algorithm using MOSFET technology

Johansson, Tomas January 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to design and build a power electronics system for the rectification and control of magnetization currents in synchronous generators with rotating exciters. The rotating exciter provides three-phase AC while the generator rotor needs DC with a high degree of control. The system needs to be able to rectify the three-phase AC to a stable DC without unwanted harmonic content, neither on the DC or the AC side. For control purposes it is also important that the current in the rotor can be changed very swiftly, preferably by several amperes during a single revolution ofthe machine. The system of choice is a synchronous rectifier bridge consisting of six MOSFET switches operated using the Space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) algorithm. This method gives a stable and controllable DC voltage while it keeps the harmonic content of the input currents at a minimum. However the DC voltage will always be higher than the peak line-to-line voltage from the exciter. To be able to lower the voltage below this value a Buck-converter is placed after the rectifier bridge. To gain a higher degree of control of the current density in the rotor windings the windings have been subdivided into three parts. To provide individual control of the current in the three rotor parts each part have been outfitted with a Push and Pull H-bridge.The proposed system has been both simulated using MATLAB Simulink and built and tested in the laboratory with satisfactory results.

The design of an analogue class-D audio amplifier using Z-domain methods

Kemp, Pieter Stephanus 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2012 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The class-D audio power amplifier has found widespread use in both the consumer and professional audio industry for one reason: efficiency. A higher efficiency leads to a smaller and cheaper design, and in the case of mobile devices, a longer battery life. Unfortunately, the basic class-D amplifier has some serious drawbacks. These include high distortion levels, a load dependent frequency response and the potential to radiate EMI. Except for EMI, the aforementioned issues can be mitigated by the proper implementation of global negative feedback. Negative feedback also has the potential to indirectly reduce EMI, since the timing requirements of the output devices can be relaxed. This thesis discusses the design of a clocked analogue controlled pulse-width modulated class-D audio amplifier with global negative feedback. The analogue control loop is converted to the z-domain by modelling the PWM comparator as a sampling operation. A method is implemented that improves clip recovery and ensures stability during over-modulation. Loop gain is shaped to provide a high gain across the audio band, and ripple compensation is implemented to minimize the negative effect of ripple feedback. Experimental results are presented.

Real-time estimation of MIG welding weld bead width using an IR camera

Casey, Patrick John 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Current manufacturing process controls are principally based only on statistical performance. The next evolution is to make physics based models combined with the state of the art sensors and actuators to control the manufacturing processes. In this paper, metal inert gas welding is used as an example of how the first steps in developing a reliable estimation technique to implement a physics based controller. The weld bead geometry will be the main focus because it is crucial to creating a quality weld. This paper uses an IR camera to generate and evaluate multiple weld bead width estimation techniques and characterizes their corresponding standard deviations. Also a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is used to fit the temperature linescan data to fit an analytical function to the numerical data. The GMM is then used to estimate the weld bead width. Finally, the optimal linescan location is calculated to produce the best possible weld bead estimation. The result is that only one of the estimation techniques actually follows a step input and vi the optimal linescan location is 4 mm from the back of the arc. Furthermore, the GMM provides an excellent fit to the temperature linescan, but does not increase the accuracy of the estimate. / text

Some Geometric Constraints on Ring-Width Trend

Phipps, Richard L. January 2005 (has links)
Simulations of tree rings from trees of undisturbed forest sites are used to describe natural, long-term width trends. Ring-width trends of canopy-sized white oak are simulated from regressions of BAI (ring area) data of real trees. Examples are given of a tree from a typical re-growth forest in Illinois and of a more slowly growing tree from an old-growth forest in Kentucky. The long-term width trend was simulated as being toward constant ring width regardless of growth rate of the tree. Conditions by which either increasing or decreasing ring-width trends could be simulated from the same linear BAI trend are examined. I conclude that curvilinear width trends, either increasing or decreasing, represent width adjustments to changes in growth rate (BAI trend) after which the width trend stabilizes to a near-constant value. Interpretation of ring-width trends of trees from undisturbed stands may be useful in assessing stand disturbance history.

The width of verbal subgroups in profinite groups

Simons, Nicholas James January 2009 (has links)
The main result of this thesis is an original proof that every word has finite width in a compact $p$-adic analytic group. The proof we give here is an alternative to Andrei Jaikin-Zapirain's recent proof of the same result, and utilises entirely group-theoretical ideas. We accomplish this by reducing the problem to a proof that every word has finite width in a profinite group which is virtually a polycyclic pro-$p$ group. To obtain this latter result we first establish that such a group can be embedded as an open subgroup of a group of the form $N_1M_1$, where $N_1$ is a finitely generated closed normal nilpotent subgroup, and $M_1$ is a finitely generated closed nilpotent-by-finite subgroup; we then adapt a method of V. A. Romankov. As a corollary we note that our approach also proves that every word has finite width in a polycyclic-by-finite group (which is not profinite). As a supplementary result we show that for finitely generated closed subgroups $H$ and $K$ of a profinite group the commutator subgroup $[H,K]$ is closed, and give examples to show that various hypotheses are necessary. This implies that the outer-commutator words have finite width in profinite groups of finite rank. We go on to establish some bounds for this width. In addition, we show that every word has finite width in a product of a nilpotent group of finite rank and a virtually nilpotent group of finite rank. We consider the possible application of this to soluble minimax groups.

Jältfors, Katarina January 2017 (has links)
