Der wissenschaftsgeschichtliche Beitrag der Oekonomin Bettina Heise (M. A.), Naturwissenschaftlerinnen im Spannungsfeld von Forschung, Unternehmung und sozialem Engagement um 1900, zielt als vergleichende intersektionale Untersuchung methodisch und inhaltlich auf genderspezifische Differenzen, Kontinuitäten und Normierungen ab, mit denen sich drei Spitzenforscherinnen um 1900 (Curie, Meitner, Kowalewskaja) bei der Integration privater, sozialer und institutioneller Rollenanforderungen konfrontiert sahen – sei es in den drei individuellen Biographien mit ihren kultur-, generations- und milieuspezifischen Lebens- und Forschungskontexten, sei es im Vergleich einzelner Aspekte der Fälle untereinander, oder sei es schließlich im kritischen Abgleich mit den Anforderungs- und FörderungsKulturen an beziehungsweise für heutige ‚MINT-Frauen‘. Fokussiert auf die (verbundenen) Problemfelder von akademischer Forschung, wissenschaftlichem Unternehmertum und politisch-sozialem Engagement, werden die genderspezifischen Normierungen in den individuellen Selbst- und Außenwahrnehmungen der drei ausgewählten Spitzenforscherinnen und die (oft evidenten) gendersemantischen Kontinuitäten im akademischen Fächerspektrum und seiner differenten Kulturen kritisch mitreflektiert.

Domestic Violence AdvocacyWood, Leila Grace January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Advocacy, in the form of direct service, is a critical type of intervention to help intimate partner or domestic violence survivors. Little is known the best practices for social workers and other helping professionals to assist survivors of domestic violence who present for services at shelters, non-residential outreach, and legal settings. This dissertation reviews relevant research related to domestic violence direct services, which is also called advocacy. The study also outlines a brief overview of the history, theory, and paradigms of thought related to the movement to end intimate partner violence. The research project used the grounded theory method to conduct and analyze semi-structured, in-depth interviews with advocates at domestic violence agency to answer the research question: What constructs and practices inform the delivery of direct services to survivors of domestic violence from shelter and non-residential service advocates? A total of 22 women working primarily with domestic violence survivors in shelters and non-residential agencies participated in the dissertation study. Participants came from one Midwestern and one Southwestern state. The interviewees had a range 1-20 years of experience in the field of domestic violence advocacy. Eighteen of 22 participants had experienced some sort of intimate violence in their lifetime. Several important findings emerged. Advocates typically enter the field because of personal motivations. The empowerment and strengths-based perspective are important to the delivery of advocacy services, as is belief in hope. Advocates typically endorse a survivor centered approach to their work. Data analysis revealed a concurrent process of advocacy that occurs within advocates and between advocates and survivors. This parallel process is marked in the earlier state of assessing and grounding; in the middle stage of establishing and affirming; and the ending stages of hoping and reflecting. These findings suggest the importance of personal experiences, hope, and reflection in the delivery of advocacy services. Community collaboration and support are essential to maintaining services that are aimed at the individual needs of survivors. More research is needed about the perceptions of services among survivors of domestic violence.

Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study investigates the social and religious roles of women in Ancient Israel.
The thesis comprises of four parts.
Chapter 1 focuses on the role of women in an anthropological perspective. We
take a look at how women were perceived within the pre-industrial communities.
Israel did not live in a vacuum but was part and parcel of the ancient Near Eastern
cultural world. Chapter 2 therefore focuses on the role of women in Egyptian and
Assyrio-Babylonian cultures. Her social, economic, political and religious roles are
under investigation.
In Chapter 3 the focus shifts to the role of women within the social organisation. A
short overview with a few examples demonstrates where the role of women
expands beyond that of social organisation. This role, which could be described as
a "political function", was only allocated to a few privileged women.
Chapter 4 deals with the religious role of the Israelite women. This chapter forms
the other focus point of the study. The religious activities of women within the
official, popular and familiy religious spheres are examined.
Chapter 5 presents a brief summary of the main conclusions of the study. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: In hierdie studie word ondersoek ingestel na die sosiale en religieuse rol van die vrou in
Oud-Israel. Die tesis bestaan uit vier dele:
In Hoofstuk I word aandag gegee aan die rol van die vrou in antropologiese perspektief.
Hier word nagegaan hoe die vrou gesien is in pre-industriële gemeenskappe.
Omdat Israel nie in 'n vakuum geleef het nie, maar 'n integrale deel van die ou Nabye
Oosterse kultuurwêreld was, word daar in Hoofstuk 2 op 'n oorsigtelike wyse op die plek
van die vrou in die kulture van Egipte en Assirië- Babilonië gekonsentreer.
In Hoofstuk 3 verskuif die fokus na Israel en word nagegaan watter rol die vrou in die
sosiale organisasie gehad het. Daar word ook kortliks gekyk na voorbeelde waar die rol
van die vrou wyer gestrek het as die engere familie kring. Hierdie rol, wat getipeer sou
kon word as 'n tipe "politieke funksie", was egter net vir 'n paar vroue beskore.
Hoofstuk 4 handel oor die religieuse rol van die vrou in Israel. Hierdie hoofstuk vorm die
ander fokuspunt van die studie. Daar word gekyk na die aandeel van die vrou in die
offisiële religie, die populêre religie en die familie-religie.
In Hoofstuk 5 word die belangrikste bevindinge van die ondersoek kortliks saamgevat.

The double bind between individual and social constructions in female survivors of sexual abuse : a qualitative studyVan Niekerk, Rudolph Leon 22 August 2012 (has links)
M.A. / This study is an attempt to investigate the way in which female survivors of childhood sexual abuse made sense of their experiences. Three participants were interviewed and the relevant themes that emerged from those interviews were coded and reported. The study was conducted from a qualitative perspective that was grounded in social construction methodology. The survivors' individual constructions of meaning at the time of their sexual abuse, their introduction to the social constructions of meaning about child sexual abuse and the double bind between these constructions are reported. The survivors' narratives are representations of the positive way they constructed meaning about their experiences as a way of coping. Their stories are also reflections of the confusion they experienced when introduced to the social constructions of child sexual abuse that differed from the meaning they attributed to their experiences. The study is a representation of the double bind that the difference between the individual and social constructions of their child sexual abuse created for them.

The Dilemmas of Bringing Your Culture With You: The Career Advancement Challenges of African-American Women Foundation ExecutivesLogan, Angela R. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Grounded in leadership, cultural, communication, and gender studies, this dissertation investigates the challenges African-American women executives in the philanthropic foundation sector faced as they strive to have their culture legitimated within the culture of the workplace. Through the use of case study methodology, I examined the experiences of participants by conducting oral history interviews that traced their critical path to leadership. I also incorporated my own experiences in the field to further explore the connections between race, gender, and leadership styles in philanthropic organizations. The interviews and my own auto-ethnographic research explored the possible consequences of black executive women in the foundation world not being able to share aspects of their cultural lives in workplace networks and the impact of the critical exclusion of who they really are as whole human beings on the quality of their careers.
An analysis of data collected from the interviews revealed key factors critical to the success of study participants. First was the presence of familial or close adults actively engaged in philanthropic activity during the participants’ formative years. Second was a strong influence of a faith tradition. Additionally, the date revealed that participants’ involvement in outside leadership roles, often tied to their racial and gender identities, were not capitalized on by employers.
This study achieved several key outcomes. First, it afforded participants an opportunity to develop the personal satisfaction of expanding the body of knowledge related to leadership development within the philanthropic foundation sector. Additionally, by sharing their stories, these individuals were able to develop or strengthen mentorship relationships. Lastly, this study has the potential of being of significant benefit to the greater philanthropic foundation sector, since it worked towards the expansion of the body of knowledge specific to the issues of gender and cultural differences within the foundation sector.
