Self-Disclosure by Mexican-American Women: The Effects of Acculturation and Language of Therapy

Cortese, Margaret 12 1900 (has links)
The present study proposed to investigate the effects of level of acculturation and of language of the therapy interview on self-disclosure by Mexican-American women. It was predicted that self-disclosure would be affected by both level of acculturation and by the language of the initial therapy interview. The principal implication of this finding is that for the first-generation Mexican-American woman, that is, a woman who has not acculturated to the mainstream society, the language in which therapy is conducted constitutes a significant factor in predicting whether she is likely to self disclose and thereby benefit from the therapy. The findings of this study suggest that less acculturated Mexican-American women would be more likely to utilize mental health services if they are available in Spanish.

Madness and gender as postmodern metaphor

Jordaan, Elsabe 11 1900 (has links)
In the existing literature, the constructs of "madness" and "woman' have long been associated with one another. This association has led to attempts by various authors, and also this current work, to deconstruct the constructs of madness and gender. The association between the constructs of "madness" and gender is seen in terms of metaphor. The relationship between the constructs of madness" and "woman" are described in terms of the manner in which meanings of metaphors of duality are collapsed onto one another. The approach to this discussion typifies the current shift in the human sciences from a belief in objective bias-neutral research to a new kind of self -conscious and sophisticated reality. I placed myself in this discussion as a researcher and a therapist, influenced by feminist, contextual and social constructionist ideas. The structure of this discussion was employed to reflect the theoretical perspectives mentioned above.therapist, influenced by feminist, contextual and social constructionist ideas. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Karina Carvalho Veras de Souza 23 April 2007 (has links)
The aesthetics surgeries in the body, with frequency much more higher between the women and at the same time exalted significantly for the propaganda and the social context, has been configured currently as new way of expression to the feminine body. Do mito do feminino ao feminino do mito: o enigma da mulher nas perspectivas psicanalítica e bíblica / The myth of female to male myth: the enigma of women in psychoanalytic perspective and biblical

Ana Amália Torres Souza 26 May 2008 (has links)
The present survey is from theorical nature and, specifically of bibliographic nature. In a interdisciplinary perspective, it intends to go deeper into the mythic dimension of female and the feminine dimension of myth, beginning from the psychoanalytic contributions of Freud and Lacan, as so the narrative analysis study of the biblical text, pointing out, in this, the study of some women in the bible (mentioned in the gospel of Mathew and participants of the Christ genealogy). Elaborated in the atmosphere of dialog between psychoanalyze and biblical literature, the present work hopes to offer contributions to the theory and psycanalitic clinic and religion science, in reference of female conception and its implications.

Battered women who kill

Nathoo, Harnishakumari Rasiklal 22 August 2012 (has links)
M.Sc. / The present study explores the personal narratives of three battered women who have been involved in the killing of their batterers, with regards to the processes of the perpetuation of abuse and victimising patterns in contexts of the battering - relationships, the criminal justice system and the prison system, which contribute to the co-creation of the women's sense of self and identity. The narratives unfold from a prison setting, where these three women are serving long-term sentences. The narratives are described within a social constructionist perspective. Two-tape recorded conversations of an hour and a half were held with each of the participants in this study. The conversations included a written dialogue from the women. In-depth interviews were used to guide the emerging narratives. The reflections of the researcher are linked to the analysis of the co-created narratives. The narratives suggest that the recognition of these women as victims of violence is clouded by the need for larger systems, namely, the criminal justice system and the prison system to identify the women as perpetrators of violence. The prison system parallels the battering relationship in positioning the women as victims. Suggestions around the treatment of- battered women who kill in prison, include communally validating the experiences and feelings of these women through the processes of group therapy. Re-categorising the women in prison, as battered women who kill, rather than murderers so as to recognise the context of the battered women is suggested. Community service is considered as an alternative to long term imprisonment. Community outreach programs from prison to share knowledge of battered women who kill is also suggested. Government policies, where possible, should be made accessible and government sponsored shelters should be established so as to recognise battered women who kill as victims of violence. Children of battered women who kill should be given assistance and provided with necessary treatment. Empirical research is needed in order to determine the prevalence of battered women who kill. Comparative studies are needed to determine whether these findings can be generalised to the general population of battered women who kill.

Life after abuse : an exploration of women's strategies for overcoming abuse

Dangor, Zubeda 22 August 2012 (has links)
D.Litt et Phil. / The study explored strategies abused women use to overcome power and control in their intimate relationships, using their own self-agency. Data was collected through the technique of triangulation in which three women who were legally divorced, wrote their own stories, after which each was individually interviewed by the researcher to get information about the process of leaving and staying away from their abusive relationships, and clearing up and moving on with their lives. Grounded theory was used to analyse the stories, the individual interviews, and the focused group discussion to generate information about the process of leaving abusive relationships on a more abstract level. The study is based on the epistemological underpinnings of post-modernism and feminism. The categories of open coding were generated from the research process and the data: These are abuse, emotional absence, dependence, resistance, use of absolutes, expectations, idealism, independence, decision-making, empowerment, recovery, innate strength and resources, self-esteem, culture and religion, introspection, verbal conceptualisation, hope, spirituality, and absence of social justice. Participants used a broad range of empowerment strategies in the process of leaving their abusive marital relationships and showed that leaving an abusive relationship is a recursive process of leaving and returning, for which women cannot be blamed. They had to make a paradigm shift to establish a basis for leaving, use their internal and external resources to make it on their own, and utilise aspects of psychological, social, racial/cultural, and religious forms of empowerment to advocate on their own behalf. The process of decision-making enabled them to gradually reclaim control over their lives. The empowerment of abused women was not necessarily equivalent to their full recovery from abuse, even though this was a pivotal point in the recovery process that began long before the women left their relationships. The results show that those women who had innate strength and were able to use it to access community resources, were more likely to leave abusive relationships. The women who participated in this study managed to leave their abusive marriages, despite having their lives threatened; each of them grew and developed personally and transformed their lives. Each has realised that there is life after abuse.

The incidence of concurrent psychopathology in patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome

Wilson, Margaret Heather 12 September 2012 (has links)
M.A. / The overall objective of the global research project of which the present study is a part, is to create a greater awareness and understanding of the association between physiology and psychology, specifically with regard to IBS. Investigations are being conducted into the contribution of such factors as stress, anxiety, depression, somatization, psychopathology. early sexual abuse and physical abuse to the development and management of IBS. The present study aims to assess the incidence of co-morbid psychopathology in patients with IBS as compared to the general population. 1.3.2 Specific Aims. The aim of the present study is to compare the incidence of concurrent psychopathology in a sample of white, female patients, aged from 25-55 years and diagnosed to have IBS, with the incidence of psychopathology in a sample of white female non-IBS controls aged 25-55 years. Of initial concern will be whether the results of this study confirm the findings of the numerous research projects which attest to the high incidence of comorbid psychopathology in patients with IBS (Chaudhary & Truelove, 1962; Liss et al., 1973; Young et al., 1976), or add support to the limited evidence that disputes these claims (Talley, Kramlinger et al., 1993; Thornton, McIntyre et al., 1990). The study then aims to consider whether the variable of gender has a significant effect on the incidence of co-morbid psychopathology in patients with IBS. As will be discussed in Chapter 3, most of the studies do not differentiate between male and female subjects even though this may well prove to be an important determining factor. As mentioned in section 1.2.1, there is a dearth of research in South Africa into IBS and, more specifically, into the incidence of co-morbid psychopathology and IBS. By restricting participants in this study to those of the white race, the aim of this study is to initiate a process in which the incidence of co-morbid psychopathology in IBS patients of all races will be assessed and compared. In addition, the present study aims to assess whether age and level of education are significant variables in determining the incidence of co-morbid psychopathology in patients with IBS. Inter-group comparisons will be made between three groups of patients with IBS divided first according to age and then according to level of education. Finally, the present study aims to be more methodologically sound than certain of the earlier research projects as reported in the literature. As will become clear in Chapters 2 and 3, a common thread running through much of the literature is the concern that the validity of results may be questionable due to methodological flaws in the design of certain research projects. Small sample size has been a problem in some studies (Liss et al., 1973; Young et al., 1976) whilst in others, the absence of a control group has limited the relevance of data (Liss et al., 1973). Furthermore, a diversity of measuring instruments have been used in the past with little if any standardisation or control of specific variables being assessed. The measuring instrument used in this study, namely the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), allows for an accuracy and comprehensiveness of assessment not found in many previous studies (see Chapter 6, section 6.2.1.4). The PAI assesses psychopathological trends in personality functioning. The word "psychopathology" will be used in this study as substitute for the phrase "psychopathological trends in personality functioning".

The changes in the sphere of maternity are remarkable phenomena throughout the history of humanity, considering that they are experiences constituted by multiple factors. As much as psychoanalysis has attempted to distinguish in terms of maternal and paternal roles, new family configurations and the demands of contemporary life escape any protocolary attempt to define for the parental couple how they should position themselves before their children. The senses of motherhood have been changing, and today women are increasingly distanced from a transgenerational transmission of the elements of motherhood. This scenario raises some concepts coined by psychoanalysis that, in our view, do not fit with the family and social organizations present in our times. In this sense, the aim of the present thesis is to discuss the reinventions of women regarding the process of becoming a mother facing the contingencies of the contemporary, tensioning them to the Winnicottian conception of motherhood. This thesis obeyed the principles and methodological resources of the psychoanalytic research, among them the interpretation and the transference of the researcher to the researched material, besides having the theoretical reference of Winnicottian Psychoanalysis to base the discussion. In order to carry out the research, seven maternity blogs were used to access a discursive material produced by women who report their experiences in this field. This locus of research made possible the understanding that the writing of oneself in these spaces can act as a means of elaborating the maternal experience, constituting as creative exits, which leads us to highlight a possible articulation between the Ciberculture and the notion of potential space described by Winnicott. We conclude that flexibilization regarding the roles of father and mother in our culture underlies our initial assumption that the conceptualization on motherhood and understanding of the parental roles present in Winnicott's theory need to be revisited.
