From Wonder to the Wonderful: A Discussion of the Role of Wonder in the Philosophy of Plato

This dissertation takes as its starting point the claim made by Plato in the Theaetetus that wonder is the origin of philosophy. The aim of the dissertation is to understand this claim and to propose a reading of Plato’s dialogues which shows that this claim applies to at least two kinds of philosophical act, though in different ways. We accomplish this aim through a thorough examination of cross-examination and contemplation as distinct acts of philosophy and through an examination of where and how the notion of wonder appears and operates in these philosophical contexts. In the end, we see two distinct kinds of philosophical wonder (aporetic wonder and contemplative wonder), each corresponding to a distinct philosophical act, and each complying with Plato’s claim about wonder in different but complimentary ways. Aporetic wonder arises within a subject as the result of cross-examination, and contemplative wonder arises when the philosopher is confronted by the wonderful objects of contemplation (i.e., the forms).

Le miraculeux se comprend comme une catégorie événementielle à connotation profane ou religieuse : c’est cette dernière, dans sa perspective chrétienne, que ce travail prend en compte. Mais afin que ce point de vue croyant puisse signifier quelque chose pour l’observateur impartial, le choix a été fait d’examiner les réactions de surprise et d’étonnement éprouvées par les bénéficiaires de ces événements. Celles-ci pourraient-elles nous informer sur ce qui a supposément lieu dans le miraculeux ? La méthodologie phénoménologique mise en place pour pouvoir répondre à cette question prend appui sur deux corpus : l’un consiste en des textes scripturaires, où les réactions de surprise et d’étonnement accompagnant les miracles sont évaluées pour comprendre comment elles opèrent dans le mécanisme de révélation à l’œuvre dans ces textes ; l’autre se compose de récits de « miraculés », interviewés dans le cadre de la méthode microphénoménologique en 1ère personne. Ces récits, une fois analysés, permettent de disposer de ressources expérientielles qui montrent la façon dont le miraculeux est éprouvé dans le vécu, comment il a surpris et bouleversé. La phénoménologie de la surprise ainsi extraite, puis confrontée à celle qui découle des récits bibliques, permet d’abord de mieux comprendre comment opèrent les affects de surprise et d’étonnement lors d’événements irruptifs dits miraculeux, et comment leur matérialité, associée à la foi des sujets-témoins, peut rendre compte de ce vécu si particulier. Le travail contribue aussi à caractériser la surprise et l’étonnement comme des outils phénoménologiques à part entière dans l’entreprise de connaissance de l’humain face à ce qui le dépasse. / The miraculous can be understood as a category of event, either profane or religious. Only the latter, in its Christian perspective, will be dealt with in this present work. But in order for this believer’s point of view to mean anything to the impartial observer, the choice has been made to examine the reactions of surprise and wonder felt by the beneficiaries of these unusual events. Could these reactions inform us about what supposedly takes place in the miraculous? The phenomenological methodology which has been implemented in order to answer this question relies on two corpuses: one consists in a set of New Testament texts, in which the reactions of surprise and wonder which accompany the miracles are evaluated to understand how they operate in the mechanism of revelation at work in those texts; the other is composed of narratives told by beneficiaries of miracles who have been interviewed within the frame of the micro-phenomenological 1st person method. Once they have been transcribed and analyzed for their emotional content, these narratives make available experiential resources which exemplify how the miraculous is lived by the beneficiaries, how it surprised and overwhelmed them. The phenomenology of surprise thus brought forward and confronted to that which can be drawn from Scripture narratives enables, first, to understand better how affects of surprise and wonder operate during so-called miraculous irruptive events, and how their materiality, can account for such an experience. But the work also aims at characterizing surprise and wonder as full-fledged phenomenological tools usable for the understanding of the human reality confronted to what exceeds it.

Emotioner spelar en central roll hos Homeros. Bland emotioner är häpnaden framträdande och situationerna och företeelserna som väcker den är många och av olika slag: människornas möten med människor och gudar, insikter som de härvidlag kan vinna, farhågor och föraningar om avgörande skeenden, deras upplevelser vid anblicken av skönhet, grymhet, gudomlighet och det mänskliga livets hårda villkor och slutligen berättarkonsten själv, kan alla väcka häpnad. Homeros har flera ord som uttrycker dessa emotionella upplevelser. Men i ordböcker och lexika översätts de ofta med samma ord och de har inte undersökts utifrån ett emotionsteoretiskt perspektiv. I häpnadens affektiva fält ingår visserligen emotioner som förundran, förvåning, hänförelse och bestörtning, men dessa ord är inte tillräckliga för att vi ska förstå de olika formerna av häpnad såsom emotioner, det vill säga såsom komplexa och processuella affektiva fenomen stadda i ständig förvandling. En djupare förståelse för homerisk psykologi och berättarteknik förutsätter att vi förstår de olika nyanserna av häpnad, hur de framkallas och kommer till uttryck narrativt och språkligt, samt hur och varför dessa emotioner tillmäts så stor vikt i båda eposen. För att göra detta analyseras tolv ord utifrån ett emotionsteoretiskt perspektiv, som utgår från att emotioner är dynamiska och processuella fenomen och utgörs av flera komponenter, bland vilka räknas intentionalitet, värderingar, handlingstendenser, uttryck, fysiologiska reaktioner, subjektivt upplevda känslor samt verbalisering. De grekiska orden utgörs av sex verb och sex substantiv, vilka betecknar antingen handlingen ”att häpna” (t.ex. θαυμάζω), emotionen ”häpnad” (t.ex. τάφος) eller handlingar som kan försätta människor i emotionella tillstånd som kan karakteriseras i termer av häpnad (t.ex. θέλγω). Undersökningen visar att det föreligger väsentliga skillnader i användningen och därmed betydelsen av de undersökta orden, både sinsemellan och inom ett och samma ord. Vidare uppmärksammas skillnader i ordens betydelse i de två eposen. Jag argumenterar för att dessa skillnader, som delvis härrör ur de två eposens skilda tematik, har berättartekniska funktioner och är särskilt relevanta för karakterisering och handling.

The focus of this thesis is to look at Geoff John's Justice League in the "New 52" universe. More specifically, the research concentrates on the relationship of the members of DC Comics "Trinity," Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The three heroes have a special relationship that spans over 75 years, and now, with the "New 52," there is an opportunity to examine the relationship from its beginning to its end in the modern era of comic book history. The scope of this project will span eight graphic novels and five years of storytelling. To properly evaluate the relationship of "The Trinity" this thesis will look at research on friendship, interpersonal relationships, and management styles, all through the lens of a thorough character study on each hero. In the end, "The Trinity" will grow from uneasy allies to friends to family. They will solidify their relationship through fighting for their lives, making mistakes together, and ultimately saying goodbye to each other. This thesis will find their relationship is unique amongst comic book characters and should be considered the archetype for all the superhero teams that would come after their creation. Moving forward, to build upon this research one should take the analysis approach followed in this thesis and apply it to either the "Rebirth" version of the Justice League or the 2017 Justice League film which also will feature a version of "The Trinity"

Essa dissertação de mestrado pesquisa a presença, representação e importância da mulher, da heroína, nos quadrinhos. O foco é a Mulher-Maravilha, de sua criação em 1941 a 2002. Analisando e comparando a personagem com dois outros personagens masculinos do mesmo país de origem, época e editora, Super-Homem e Batman, tentando entender os diferentes níveis de poder entre eles e os caminhos pelos quais a heroína passou. As diferenças serão analisadas dentro e fora dos quadrinhos. Além disso, consideramos a evolução da mulher dentro do mesmo recorte temporal de análise da personagem, relacionando os dois mundos e suas múltiplas influências. A intenção é alimentar e ampliar os estudos historiográficos sobre uma história das mulheres e também de resgatar a presença da mulher na história. A análise tem um especial foco sobre o tratamento aplicado à Mulher-Maravilha pela indústria cultural no Brasil, especialmente na metade dos anos cinqüenta, quando a personagem foi lançada aqui. Igualmente importante é a discussão entre globalização e mundialização, mas, mais do que isso, os sinais, fatores e a estrutura de um novo arranjo planetário na economia, política e cultura. A globalização e o resgate da mulher na história são fatos quase contemporâneos. Este trabalho vai tentar mostrar questões para compreender ambos os fenômenos, com a análise da Mulher-Maravilha que pretendemos fazer aqui. / This MA dissertation investigates the female presence, representation and significance in action comic books as heroes. These differences will be analysed inside and outside of the comics itself. Besides, this analysis is concerned on female evolution at the same period that Wonder Woman was created to the present. Our propose is to relate both worlds, the comic books and our world, and their mutual influences as well. These aspects are connected with the intention to provide and increase the historiography studies on a female history and also to rescue the female presence in history. The analysis has a special focus about the treatment applied to Wonder Woman by the cultural industry in Brazil. Equally important to this propose is the aspect about the last forty years (or near by) we have the process of global issues. A infinite discussion between global and worldwide matters but more than this, the signs, factors and structure from a new planetary arrangement in economy, politics and cultural aspects. The global process and the rescue of a female history are events almost contemporary.
