The Immediate Effects of Somatic Approach Workshops on the Body Usage and Musical Quality of Pianists

Wong, Grace January 2015 (has links)
There is a growing popularity among musicians to turn to somatic approaches such as the Alexander Technique, Body Mapping and Feldenkrais Method to improve posture and movement at the instrument and to produce better tone quality. There is little scientific and objective data to support the changes that are apparently seen and heard after such training. This study examines if a single somatic session has an immediate, perceivable effect on pianists’ body usage and musical quality. In the first mode of evaluation, judges rated specific aspects of body usage and musical quality. In the second mode of evaluation, judges were asked to identify post-somatic performances. Results indicated that there are perceivable changes in body usage and musical quality although those differences are not as apparent or easily detectable as is often believed. The findings also suggest that it is easier to identify post-somatic performances through body usage than musical quality.

Open group music therapy workshops with homeless adults : a case study

Williams, Kristle Claire January 2013 (has links)
People who are homeless tend to suffer from stress, substance abuse and mental health problems. Music therapy with a closed group of homeless adults residing in an American homeless shelter has shown potential benefit. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore how open group music therapy sessions designed to facilitate emotional expression, interpersonal connection, stimulation, and self-esteem were experienced by homeless adults not residing in a common shelter. The current study made use of a sample of homeless adults visiting a church feeding scheme in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The sessions were framed as music workshops and the main components used included: drumming, vocal and instrumental improvisation, and known songs. A total of six, weekly, open group music therapy workshops were held at the feeding scheme for a maximum of ten participants per session. Videotaped recordings were made of each music therapy session and one different participant was interviewed after the session each week. From the interpretative phenomenological analysis of the transcripts of individual interviews and the videotaped recordings of sessions, a number of themes emerged. From the findings of this study it was concluded that the open group music therapy sessions offered homeless adults opportunities for: increased self-esteem, meaningful interpersonal connection, constructive use of time, stress relief, meeting emotional needs, and transformation. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / lk2014 / Music / MMus / Unrestricted

Alarcon Tomateo, Judith Soledad, Barandiaran Villaverde, Ornella Liliana, Cordova Roda, Juan Vidal, García Fernandez, Alfredo Kevin, Torero Jaymez, Alfredo 01 July 2019 (has links)
The present project has been carried out to analyze the feasibility of executing a business model based on the creation of a Website, whose purpose is to search for mechanical workshops for people with vehicles that require a technical service. Our main hypotheses focus on two main groups. On the one hand, the workshops and their willingness to belong to the Tutaller network through a monthly payment. On the other hand, if the owners of vehicles would be willing to create an account on our platform. These two hypotheses were validated through various interviews in districts such as Chorrillos, Surquillo, Barranco and Miraflores. Today, the administrators of the workshops are mainly based on traditional marketing and sometimes make payments to promote themselves in "yellow pages". There are only a few who invest in advertising on Facebook or Websites. This generates a complication for the workshops and for the owners of vehicles, since the latter do not have the necessary information to be able to attend a workshop; which, causes that the workshops do not aquire new clients quickly The final conclusion of the project is that the business model generates profitability for investors. More specifically, it is estimated that in year 2 the net profit will be positive. / Trabajo de investigación

“Det ska heta unicorn-katt-dinosaurie tid!” : Barns delaktighet genom skapandet av sin egen bilderbok / “It’s called unicorn-cat-dinosaur time!” : Children's participation through the creation of their own picture book

Diaz, Cheka, Wijewickrama, Sachithra January 2024 (has links)
The usage of children’s books is a fundamental aspect within a preschool environment. Even though the content in such books are childlike, they are always written by adult authors who appropriates a child-perspective. This sparked an interest in creating a children’s book with the cooperation of a group of children and producing a story from a children’s perspective. The overall objective of the project was to improve children's participation in preschool and develop their understanding of democratic principles through the creation of their own story book. By using art based research as the method, creative workshops were carried out where the children created their own story through conversation and artwork. The collected data were in the form of transcriptions of films recorded during the workshops and the artwork done by the group of children which was analyzed using concepts such as democracy, participation, child-perspective and children’s perspective. The steps which involved the creative workshops together with the group of children were further examined by the usage of Roger Hart’s Ladder of Participation.  The results of the project showed a high level of participation by the group of children due to possibilities provided for them to exercise democratic principles such as voting and decision making as a group while creating a story and all its essential contents from their perspective. In regards to the Ladder of Participation, genuin participation of different levels were observed from the group of children during the course of this project. The 2 highest levels of the ladder; where an activity is initiated and carried out by children, were unable to be reached since in practical sense, preschool aged children need adult assistance. The storybook created involved a fantasytale titled Superkatterna (The Supercats) which consists of cats, dinosaurs and unicorns in their rainbow world, conflict between the cats and dinosaurs and how the unicorns help them to resolve their issues. Regarding the composition of the 1st draft of the storybook, had there been a wider time frame for this project, the children could have had the opportunity to be further involved and their level of participation during this step would have been able to become higher than what it was during the project.
