Detecção por raios-x de trincas de fadiga em juntas rebitadas de Glare&reg / X-ray inspection of fatigue cracks in riveted lap joints of Glare&trade

Soares, Henrique Nogueira 27 April 2007 (has links)
A comparison is performed on the ability of two modalities of nondestructive X-ray radiography method in detecting fatigue cracks in riveted lap joints of aeronautical grade fiber-metal laminate Glare™. During constant amplitude loading in fatigue testing riveted specimens were periodically inspected using both the conventional and digital X-ray methodology. Conventional film X-ray modality provided high quality images of growing cracks in the mechanical joints, whereas digital radiography generated faulty images, which impaired or even prevented the structural integrity assessment of the riveted joints.

Wege, Stefan 22 April 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Automatic explosive detection is advantageous for fast and secure baggage control. The baggage is controlled by a multi level system. In level 1 the baggage will be inspected by a multi view x-ray radiography machine. The machine divides the baggage into secure and rejected bags and finds in the rejected bags a critical region for further inspection by a level 2 machine. For this reason the level 2 machine has to identify by only one additional x-ray view the new position of the critical region of the bag after the transport to the level 2 machine. To solve this problem a method was developed, which uses a relation between the moments of the grey-value of x-ray scan and the moments of the x-ray attenuation coefficient of the inspected object. The method was tested with simulated scans.

X-ray and neutron radiography of optically opaque fluid flows: experiments with particle-laden liquid metals and liquid foams

Lappan, Tobias 14 December 2021 (has links)
Multi-phase flows of small solid particles and gas bubbles in optically opaque fluids play a key role in both mineral and metallurgical processing, which use the principle of froth flotation and bubble flotation, respectively. To gain visual insight into such particle-laden multi-phase flows, this dissertation investigates the application of radiographic techniques, employing both X-rays and neutron radiation. Lab-scale experiments are performed with model particles in liquid foams and liquid metals, focussing on the time-resolved measurement of the particles’ motion in the multi-phase flows, aiming for a sufficient contrast-to-noise ratio in the X-ray or neutron image sequences. The model experiments in this dissertation demonstrate the capabilities of X-ray and neutron radiography to image multi-phase flows in particle-laden and optically opaque fluids, especially to measure the motions of small particles with high spatial and temporal resolution. X-ray radiography enables to track custom-tailored tracer particles acting as tools for experimental investigations of flow phenomena in three-dimensional liquid foams. Both radiographic techniques supplement each other for imaging measurements of multi-phase flows with gas bubbles and solid particles in liquid metals. However, to visualise smallest model particles in liquid metal flows, neutron radiography proves to be the more promising technique compared to X-ray radiography. All in all, this dissertation contributes to paving the way for systematic radiographic measurements and further studies of particle-laden flows in optically opaque fluids.

Solidification dirigée du silicium multi-cristallin pour les applications photovoltaïques : caractérisation in situ et en temps réel par imagerie X synchrotron / Directional solidification of multi-crystalline silicon for photovoltaic applications : in-situ and real time characterisation by synchrotron X-ray imaging

Tandjaoui, Amina 17 October 2013 (has links)
We studied in situ and real-time the grain structure of multi-crystalline silicon from directional solidification using synchrotron X-ray imaging techniques. X-ray Radiography gives information on the evolution, dynamics and morphology of the solid/liquid interface. X- ray Topography gives more information on the grain structure, strains and defects that occur during solidification step. We showed the importance of the preparation of the initial stage of solidification in particular in the experiments where solidification is initiated from seed. The analysis of the solid/liquid interface morphology allowed us to characterize the kinetic undercooling of the solidification front, to understand the evolution of the grains boundary grooves and to analyze the mechanisms of grain competition and also to reveal the impurities impact on the grain structure formed at the end of the solidification. We also observed twinning phenomenon in our experiments and we demonstrated that twins in multi-crystalline silicon can be growth twins. Two kinds of silicon twins have been identified and the grain competition phenomenon with twins studied.

Study of the influence of external fields on solidification microstructures formation by X-ray radiography / Etude de l'influence de champs externes sur la formation des microstructures de solidification par radiographie X

Abou Khalil, Lara 09 January 2017 (has links)
X-ray radiography with synchrotron and laboratory source was applied to study phenomena related to the directional solidification of Al-Cu alloys under external fields and time-dependent. The solidification microstructures formation has been analyzed during parabolic flight campaigns in the framework of XRMON project. We have shown that the gravity level variations modified the solutal layer and then the liquid undercooling ahead of the solid/liquid interface. In particular, the acceleration of gravity level induces the Columnar-to-Equiaxed transition in a refined alloy. For a non-refined alloy, the dendrite growth velocity changes with respect to the gravity level variations during each parabola. The second part of this thesis relates to the effect of a permanent magnetic field on the equiaxed solidification in a temperature gradient. The coupling between the magnetic field and the temperature gradient generates a Thermo-Electro-Magnetic force that modifies the equiaxed grains trajectory during their sedimentation. The action of this force is well described by an analytical model proposed by Wang et al. with additional corrections associated to the wall confinement and the grain morphology. Effects of the magnetic field on the liquid have been also revealed.

Correction of scattered radiation in multi-energy radiography and tomography / Correction du rayonnement diffusé en imagerie multi-énergies radiographique et tomographique

Sossin, Artur 24 October 2016 (has links)
X-ray imaging coupled with recently emerged energy-resolved photon counting detectors provides the ability to differentiate material components and to estimate their respective thicknesses. However, such techniques require highly accurate images. The presence of scattered radiation leads to a loss of spatial contrast and, more importantly, a bias in radiographic material imaging and computed tomography (CT). Additionally, artifacts are also introduced in the case of the latter. The main aim of the present thesis was to develop a scatter correction approach adapted for multi-energy imaging. In order to achieve this task, a secondary objective was also set. Namely, the conception and validation of a simulation tool capable of providing energy-resolved scatter simulations in a reasonable time. Once validated through simulations and experimentally, this tool gave the ability to study the behavior of scattered radiation both in spatial and energy domains. Based on the conducted scatter analysis, a Partial Attenuation Spectral Scatter Separation Approach (PASSSA) adapted for multi-energy imaging was developed. The evaluation of PASSSA in radiographic mode through simulations and experiments revealed noteworthy results both in terms of image contrast improvement and scatter induced bias reduction. Additionally, simulation studies examined the performance of the developed approach in CT, where PASSSA also proved to be quite effective at correcting scatter induced distortions. Moreover, the performance improvement in the context of basis material decomposition in radiography after applying the designed method was also analyzed. It was concluded that the application of PASSSA results in a substantial improvement in basis material thickness estimation. Finally, based on the obtained simulated and experimental method evaluation results an analysis of perspective developments was also conducted.
