Yu Yǒng-mo's theological understanding of God and spirituality

Kim, Chanhong 12 March 2016 (has links)
Yong-mo Yu (1890-1981) was a supporter of religious pluralism in Korea, advocating for a syncretistic conception of God; and for interfaith spiritual renewal, during a period marked by the rejection of these concepts. A study of his work enriches our conception of the 20th century Korean Christianity. The main goal of my dissertation is to first analyze Yu's theological understanding of God and examine it in relation to the three East Asian major religious traditions as well as a Western ontological understanding of the ultimate reality; and second, through such analyses, to discuss the significance and challenges of Yu's pluralistic theology and spirituality. Yu's own definition of God as Opshi-gyeshin-Haneunim (God who exists as Non-Being) is an ontological understanding of the ultimate reality, which is very different from conservative Korean Protestantism's understanding of God. Yu's understanding of God is very similar to Robert C. Neville's understanding of God as the creator in that both of them define the ultimate reality as absolute Nothingness or Emptiness transcending both being and non-being. Yu's understanding of God was also based on the East Asian religious traditions which are Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Therefore, Yu defines Christian God as T'ai-chi and Wu-chi, nothingness, and Tao which are concepts that Yu borrows from the East Asian religions. Yu's concept of God as Opshi-gyeshin-Haneunim was formed and developed based on his own spiritual experiences, for example, his experience of spiritual union with God. At the same time, his theological reflection on the ultimate reality also had great effect on his spirituality. In the same tenor, the pluralistic characteristics of Yu's theology and spirituality are the result of Yu's creative combination of his ontological understanding of the ultimate reality transcending various religious contexts and the East Asian spirituality focusing on spiritual discipline to develop the divine power given to human beings. Yu's creative integration of the ontological analysis of God and the East Asian spiritual tradition can provide a new perspective to Korean conservative Protestantism in understanding other religions, and suggest a new type Christian spirituality in plural Korean contexts. / 2017-01-12T00:00:00Z

Chinese Idioms (Cheng-yu) for Second-Language Learners: Toward a Pedogogical Approach

Stellard, Lisa 06 1900 (has links)
x, 56 p. / This thesis considers the importance of cheng-yu (Chinese language-specific, idiomatic lexical-syntactic units) in second-language acquisition at the intermediate and advanced levels and examines current research in order to formulate an instructional approach. Informed by linguistic and pedagogical research on idioms generally, the study aims to apply research relevant to Chinese language idioms specifically. Main topics to be considered include: the importance of cheng-yu in higher-level discourse including the social significance of cheng-yu use; the patterned structure of cheng-yu; idiom teaching methods and a review of idiom content and presentation in commonly-used Chinese language textbooks; and the significance of corpus data in cheng-yu instruction. Results confirm the importance of cheng-yu in discourse and recommend practicable, research-based classroom strategies. Finally, a sample lesson is provided which encourages the use of corpus data and utilizes research findings on the structure of cheng-yu and on teaching practices thought to foster acquisition. / Committee in charge: Dr. Zhuo Jing-Schmidt, Chairperson; Dr. Yugen Wang, Member

Queer Chinese Postsocialist Horizons: New Models of Same-Sex Desire in Contemporary Chinese Fiction, "Sentiments Like Water" and Beijing Story

Shernuk, Kyle, Shernuk, Kyle January 2012 (has links)
This thesis represents an investigation into the strategies used by postsocialist Chinese male subjects to articulate their subjecthood and desires. The introduction explains the choice for using a phenomenological methodological approach in addressing the issue and also lays out the simultaneous goal of this thesis to inaugurate a move away from political allegorical interpretations as the standard for reading contemporary Chinese literature. The body chapters look at two different contemporary Chinese works to help illuminate the arrival of the Chinese subject. Using Wang Xiaobo's novella "Sentiments Like Water" and the anonymously penned online novel Beijing Story as case studies, this thesis investigates the ways alternative epistemologies and uses of history can undo pathological understandings of queerness and create new identities for Chinese subjects. The thesis concludes with thinking about the direction of the queer and Chinese studies fields and offers future points of investigation.

Efeito skin no dínamo de Ponomarenko

Benetti, Monã Hegel January 2017 (has links)
Through the study of the kinematic dynamo theory, where the Ponomarenko dynamo stands out, we come across an analysis, until now developed in the literature, restricted to the approximation in which the surface, that contains the flow responsible for the dynamo effect, is considered dielectric. This work offers an analytical treatment of the Ponomarenko process, where the surface that confines the movement of the fluid, becomes conductive, which allows the appearance of the skin effect. A general solution will, therefore, be presented, from which it is possible to derive, under certain conditions, the dispersion relation already known in the literature, for which the dynamo effect is considered important and, others, the new dispersion relation, in which the skin effect becomes important. Finally, we present, again, the general skin effect solution that contains both effects, considering two approaches, characterized as: slowly rotation dynamo and fastly rotation dynamo. They will be useful to indicate the tendency of the system exhibit to the dynamo effect.

Conductivity profiles for a horizontally uniform earth

Murrell, Hugh Crozier January 1983 (has links)
An investigation is made into the mathematics behind the noniterative inversion algorithm of Shimon Coen and Michael Wang-Ho Yu [1981]. The algorithm determines the conductivity profile of a horizontally uniform earth from surface measurements of apparent resistivity with a Schlumberger array. The algorithm is checked by performing the inversion on both artifical and raw field data

Science and education in China : a survey of the present status and a program for progressive improvement

Twiss, George Ransom, 1863- January 1925 (has links)
Origin of the survey: During the latter half of the year 1921, Professor Paul Monroe, of Teachers College, Columbia University, working under the auspices of the Chinese National Association for the Advancement of Education made an extensive tour in China for the purpose of lecturing on educational administration, and making a critical investigation of the schools and higher institutions. Professor Monroe discovered many serious defects in the system of education, and pointed out with particular emphasis the weakness and inadequacy of the science instruction, and the urgent need for improving it.

The Arts of Linking: A Comparative Study on Lian Ju by Han Yu's circle and Haikai by Basho's School

Xie, Kai 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Linked verse is a communicative and dynamic poetic form in which a series of verses are usually composed by several poets. It existed in both China and Japan and was fully explored by Han Yu’s circle and Bashō’s school, respectively. This thesis is a comparative study of the lian ju (Chinese linked verse) by Han Yu’s circle and the haikai (Japanese popular linked verse) by Bashō’s school, with focus on the arts of linking, the most important and interesting aspect of this unique poetic form. This study begins with a broad introduction and comparison of the two literary groups and their linked verse compositions. Representing the highest level of linked verse compositions in China and Japan, Han’s lian ju and Bashō’s haikai share some similarities. Yet whereas the former never outshone individual poetry in terms of influence and popularity, the latter dominated the entire poetic field, at least in Bashō’s day. In the second chapter, I investigate how the verses are linked. In terms of linking techniques, Han Yu’s circle basically used “close link,” including “word link” and “content link,” which does not exceed the range of the Chinese poetic tradition. In contrast, Bashō’s school valued the “distant link,” which is usually beyond expectation and needs analysis and imagination. In both cases, the linking is usually a combination of “complementary linking” and “competitive linking.” However, the competitive atmosphere prevails in the former while the complementary characteristic is represented more often in the latter. The third chapter continues the topic of linking, but it focuses on how the verses in a sequence are integrated as a whole. The verses in a lian ju sequence share a topic and are organized as in traditional individual poetry. In a haikai sequence, however, verses with different topics and images are disciplined by detailed rules. Finally, I compare the styles of the two schools. Both of them created a “new” poetic style by searching for the “old.” Nevertheless, the content of their poetry and their ways of composing poetry are very different.
