The moderating influence of hedonic consumption in an extended theory of planned behaviour

Lee, Richard Yee Meng January 2007 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] Against a contextual backdrop of slowing growth in developed mobile service markets, the importance of youth as a growth segment, and youth's tendencies to consume mobile services hedonically, two research streams drove this dissertation. The first stream concerned extending the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to predict youth's behavioural intentions to stay loyal to mobile service providers. Drawing on selfcategorisation theory, a conceptual model extended TPB by replacing subjective norm with group norm, a social influence from behaviourally relevant peers. With the extended TPB as the theoretical framework, the second stream investigated determinants of mobile loyalty intentions. Common to both streams, a key contribution of this dissertation was how hedonic consumption moderated the relationships among mobile loyalty intentions and their determinants. The dissertation addressed five questions in the two research streams, which to the author's knowledge no published studies have explored. Using a triangulation approach to address the research questions, a qualitative survey and literature review yielded six determinants of mobile loyalty intentions. Next, a pretest led to an improved questionnaire before a large-scale survey gathered data for empirical testing. The survey took place with Singaporean youth and yielded a cleaned sample of n = 415. ... For both low and high hedonic consumptions, customer value was insignificant. This might be due to Singapore's competitive mobile service market; youth perceived little differences in value for money among competing mobile service providers. Testing alternative models offered further insights into youth's mobile loyalty intentions. Youth's mobile loyalty behaviour, operationalised as past switching, was not stochastic, suggesting that mobile loyalty intentions contained underlying determinants. Brand trust, salient in other contexts, did not apply to mobile loyalty intentions perhaps because youth perceived little risk in switching mobile service providers in developed markets. An attitude-group norm interaction also did not relate to mobile loyalty intentions, supporting TPB's construct independence and parsimony. Finally, attitude and customer satisfaction were operationally similar in that they related to mobile loyalty intentions similarly. The dissertation concluded by offering academic and managerial implications and contributions, limitations, and future research areas.

Experiencing domestic violence as a child : young adults’ recollections and suggestions for social work services

Warnick, Danelia Verna 02 1900 (has links)
This study sought to explore and describe the recollections of young adults who were exposed to domestic violence within the family structure during childhood, so as to develop an understanding of the systems and structures needed to develop effective services to child victims of domestic violence. It is envisaged that services to these children could aid as an important preventative strategy, in that newly acquired behaviour and thinking patterns could assist them to defer from engaging in violent relationships, thereby, breaking the cycle of violence. The research study was conducted by means of a qualitative research approach and made use of the phenomenological, contextual, explorative and descriptive research designs. The purposive sampling technique was used and semi-structured interviews were employed to obtain the data. Tesch’s (cited in Creswell, 2009:186) proposed eight steps for data analysis were employed. Data verification focused on credibility/authenticity, transformability, dependability and conformability. It is envisaged that the findings and conclusions of this study could inform the planning of services to children exposed to domestic violence. / Social Work / M.A. (S.S.)

Multi-generational ministries in the context of a local church / Dissertation

Codrington, Graeme Trevor 11 1900 (has links)
Never before in living memory has the gap in mutual acceptance and understanding between generations been as large as it is now. Massive societal and cultural shifts, fuelled by changing technology, increasing rates of change, globilisation and disconnectedness, have caused a deep divide between those born in the first two-thirds of this century and those born in the latter decades. This dissertation aims to identify the causes of this divide, quantify the effects and suggest solutions. Although generally applicable to many different organisations in society, especially schools, parenting, businesses with young and old employees or those with generationally diverse target markets, this dissertation focuses specifically in application on the context of local churches. It aims to provide an understanding of the concept of a "generation gap" and practical guidelines for churches seeking to become truly multi-generational in their structures and ministries. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / M. Psychopathologie des tentatives de suicide des jeunes adultes dans le sud Bénin / Psychodynamic understanding of reactive suicide attempts in the south of Benin

Bamisso, Olga 11 June 2015 (has links)
In West Africa, suicidal behaviors, estimated once rare, are increasingly becoming frequent. Yet, in Southern Benin, previous studies at the National University Hospital have noted an increase in young adults’ suicide attempts and the lack of psychological assessment and support to the attempters, but also the need to take cultural interpretations into account. So, the question of the meaning and the care of suicidal acts arises with acuity. It is in this framework that our research is being carried out. The aim is to achieve a better psychodynamic understanding of young adults’ suicide attempts in Southern Benin, and to assess, in this particular context, the role of a psychoanalytically oriented psychologist. This is a qualitative study. The confrontation of psychoanalytic references with social anthropology elements or characteristics of the context is one of the main focuses of this work. The methodological procedure used for data collection includes a clinical intake protocol, which is adapted to the context and implemented to suicide attempters, and «anthropological encounters» as a way to open up local concepts of suicide in order to better identify suicidal issues. It appears from the clinical understanding that attempters are experiencing an identity crisis wherein the suicidal act represents a research of psychic overhaul. One can thus argue that some young adult suicide attempts in Southern Benin meet two movements of drive defusion and fusion. While screen-circumstances produce a traumatic experience which leads to self-destructiveness, the suicidal act is part of a drive fusion process and specific rearrangements in identity processes. This process, which I named here “psychic refondation” or “psychic rebirth”, is made possible by the clinical reception given to attempters after their suicide attempts. From this understanding arises a conceptual framework for clinical psychologists and relevant clinical settings to take care of suicide attempters in Southern Benin.

Young adults with Aspergers syndrome : What promotes establishment in the labor market?

Löjdmark, Linda January 2018 (has links)
Nyckelord; Aspergers syndrom (ASD), arbetsmarknad, etablering, stöd, unga vuxna / Background; Unemployment is higher for people with disabilities than in the rest of the population. People with neuropsychiatric disabilities (NPF) have difficulties in establishing themselves in the labor market. Purpose; Describe support measures for young adults with Asperger's syndrome (ASD) in order to establish themselves in the labor market Method; A literature rewive was conducted in which 10 scientific articles were analyzed and discussed. Result; The study has been divided into four different themes (time aspect, coordination of efforts, existing support and lack of support), highlighting what support efforts are available and what support is requested for people with ASD Discussion; Individuals with ASD have complex support needs and support is most effective when individualized. Coordination between different actors together with the individuals and non-timelimited support is increasingly demanded to increase the chances of establishing in the labor market. Conclusion; The establishment of the young adults with ASD can be improved through personalized, coordinated and non-timelimited support. Keywords; Asperger syndrome (ASD), labor market, establishment, support, young adult

Violência no namoro entre jovens universitários no estado de São Paulo / Intimate partner violence among undergraduate students of state of São Paulo

Tania Aldrighi Flake 05 June 2013 (has links)
The study is part of a multicenter survey \"International Study of Violence in Dating - IDVS\" using its standardized instrument. The objective was to contribute for the recognition of the occurrence of intimate partner violence during phase dating, based on conceptual issues of gender and its elements for understanding the formation of intimate relationship. Dialogue also with theories of human development, the acceptance of violence in conflict resolution and learning the violence of generational perspective. The proposed cut were three: a descriptive study on the prevalence of violence over the dating relationship and its various types; a second, addressed the violence and associated factors; and a third, evaluated the impact of violence on mental health from the depression disorder. The questionnaire was self-reported by 362 undergraduate students from two universities, one public and one private, of the State of São Paulo, with 37% male and 63% female, median age 20 years. We estimated the prevalence among students of violence in intimate relationships, suffered or perpetrated, for the kinds physical, psychological and sexual, describing the overlap among them. As for violence, 75.9% suffered some sort in life and 76.4% were perpetrators. The most prevalent type of violence, both suffered as perpetrated, was psychological, followed by sexual. The large overlap between violence suffered and perpetrated (83.9%) reflects the reciprocity of aggression, with no difference between men and women. In the analysis of factors associated with sex life in dating and approval of violence remained associated to suffer violence for women, while for men longer relationship more than 6 months and use of alcohol and drugs concomitant remained associated. In the case of perpetrated violence, the use of drugs and alcohol concomitant, jealousy and long relationship more than two years remained associated for women. In the model considered the types of violence and the association with depression, for women have suffered physical violence exclusive and physical and sexual concurrent remained associated. The results are consistent with previous literature on dating violence that shows high prevalence of violence suffered and perpetrated, beyond reciprocity between both, men and women. The situation seems to change either marital mutuality of aggression, whether the meaning of violence and the perpetrators, for women and for men, in contrast to the dating situation. The consequences of victimization in dating for women are more expressive, while for men it is important to examine in greater detail the specifics for the issue of male point of view. The findings of this study bring to the Brazilian context confirming the need for action and public policy in this direction, to produce important knowledge for prevention programs for young people in the stage dating, either in the health service, either in schools and universities, which concentrates the specific population of young people, in order to minimize the chances that the assaults continue in the marriage.
