Parenting practices for high -achieving preadolescent migrant education students

Thiele, Bonnie Jeanne 01 January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, a grounded theory in a qualitative research design was developed to extend the knowledge base of positive parenting practices in homes of Migrant students. The study examined: (a) parenting practices in homes of high-achieving preadolescent students, (b) the impact of high mobility and school transitions, (c) family language and literacy practices, (d) cultural and historical contexts of parenting practices, and (e) parents' perspectives about what is happening in the schools. Literature was reviewed to learn about families of cultural and linguistic diversity from middle class Anglo students and staff. Categories that developed from the research of literature included: (a) education and the future, (b) family literacy and learning, (c) mentors and role models, and (d) family values and family communication. Interviews were conducted after cross-cultural research techniques were used to decenter the languages. Parents of fourteen students responded to the interviews and a checklist for the home learning environment. Three administrators were interviewed to gain their perspective of the school program for Migrant students and opportunities for parent involvement. The findings were reported in three categories: (a) parenting practices in the home, (b) parent perspective of school learning environments, and (c) the home-school partnership. Conclusions were based on the parents' responses, but most responses related literacy and learning directly to the school. School administrators provided information about basic programs and supplementary services. Six recommendations were made to other parents of Migrant students and for administrators and other school leaders. Recommendations to parents included: (a) specific and direct communication with children from an early age, (b) support for children's homework, schoolwork, and other responsibilities, and (c) counseling about positive mentors, role models, and friends. Recommendations for administrators included: (d) the need for early childhood education programs, services, and communication with parents, (e) provision of extra-curricular activities for all preadolescent students, and (f) a school culture that welcomes and encourages cultural and linguistic diversity.

DISCRETE-TIME POISSON CHANNEL: CAPACITY AND SIGNALLING DESIGN

Cao, Jihai 10 1900 (has links)
<h2 id="x-x-x-bp_categories-h"> </h2> / <p>The discrete-time Poisson (DTP) channel models a wide range of optical communication channels. The channel capacity and capacity-achieving distributions are generally unknown. This thesis addresses system design of DTP channels and presents novel contributions to the capacity of DTP channel, properties and closed-form expression of the capacity-achieving distribution under peak and average constraints, signalling design, and sum-capacity-achieving distributions of DTP multiple access channel (MAC) with peak amplitude constraints.</p> <p>Two algorithms are developed to compute the channel capacity of DTP channel as well as the capacity-achieving distribution with average and peak amplitude constraints. Tight lower bounds based on input distributions with simple forms are presented. Non-uniform signalling algorithms to achieve the channel capacity are also demonstrated. Fundamental properties of capacity-achieving distributions for DTP channels are established. Furthermore, necessary and sufficient conditions on the optimality of binary distributions are presented. Analytical expressions for the capacity-achieving distributions of the DTP channel are derived when there is no dark current and when the dark current is large enough. A two-user DTP multiple access channel model is proposed and it is shown that the sum-capacity-achieving distributions under peak amplitude constraints are discrete with a finite number of mass points.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Exploring factors influencing the attitude of staff towards performance management : the case of core network field operation section in Telkom-Eastern Cape

Mabona, Wonga Duke Mfundisi 10 1900 (has links)
This study explored factors that influence attitudes towards performance management among staff in the Core Network Field Operation (CNFO) of Telkom Eastern Cape. Performance management concerns achieving organisational goals efficiently and effectively. An observation by a manger that the staff were not performing optimally and were displaying a negative attitude towards performance management, necessitated an objective investigation into the reasons for such attitudes and also to be derivative of a corrective solution. This qualitative study was done in the form of a descriptive open ended survey involving geographically dispersed employees. Factual evidence gathered from the result of the study supports the literature that people have different views of performance management. A direct consequence of the different views could be in the inconsistent application of performance management. Solutions and possible corrective actions to improve employee participation and perception as sought by this study are contained in detail in the report / Business Management / M. Tech. / The characterization of imposing and symbolic motherhood, considering the biologically established child as the object of desire, conducts to analyze the insertion of the right of procreation in the field of human reproductive rights, which becomes a springboard for development of knowledge able to deconstruct biomedical playback as something natural and transpose it to the alcove of the lab, immersed in a bioethical and biopolitical context, and stuck in political and legal struggles. The reproductive body appears at the core of the discussion tamed, controlled and politicized to the extent that reproduction becomes the mainspring of the biomedical development, driven by the criteria of freedom, autonomy and equality and, by the incursions of the market economy in contrast with the bioethical principles to be respected by the medical knowledge, extolling webs biopower relations established between the individuals involved. In this perspective, in terms of the collisions to be checked between individual and collective, public and private, becomes important the role of the State, which requires the definition of prestacionais active stance in the form of public politics, such as to make enforceable the right to implementate the parental project through the use of assisted reproduction techniques. No longer a mere figure of a welfare state but a clever and strategist State, which placed biopolitics in the prospects of governmentality agenda.

Single Mothers of Young Children and Continuing Education

Fluellen, Jackiethsha Lynette 01 January 2016 (has links)
The number of households headed by single mothers living in poverty exceeds that of all other categories of poverty-stricken households, and poverty impacts the children negatively in various ways. When single mothers choose not to continue their education, they lessen their chances of finding higher paying jobs and raising their families out of poverty. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand why some single mothers decided to continue into higher education. The study considered the decisions of 6 single mothers of young children in Montgomery County, Texas, and the obstacles they overcame while completing their education. The women were recruited from a co parenting workshop using snowball sampling. The inclusion criteria included single mothers of children ages 0-10 years old and who obtained a degree or specialized certificate. The conceptual framework was based on Bandura's concept of self-efficacy and Carspecken's critical theory. Interviews were used with the 6 women to collect data that were then transcribed, compared, coded, and thematically analyzed. Emergent themes included overcoming obstacles, receiving help from others, acting as their children's role models, dealing with the impact of the father's absence, and receiving motivation from their own parents. The social significance of this research is that it illuminates the problem of poverty among single female-headed households and increases the understanding of why some single mothers decide to continue into higher education.

A study of how teachers describe and discuss about students at risk of not achieving the national knowledge requirements and the power relations the teachers relate to at assessment and grading of these students

Bjärsholm, Daniel January 2013 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate how upper secondary teachers in physical education describe and discuss about students with an individual education plan (IEP) or at risk of not achieving the national knowledge requirements. Furthermore, this study aims to illustrate the discourses and power relations teachers are a part of and how these relate to each other in the assessment and grading of these students. The investigation is based on four qualitative interviews plus four existing IEPs which are analyzed with help of discourse analysis and the concepts power and categorization. The investigation shows that the teachers divide the students at risk of not achieving the national knowledge requirements in a variety of categories: lazy and comfortable, afraid, uninterested, language difficulties and physiological and or psychological reasons. The investigation shows that the teacher reasons differently about the education depending on which category the student belongs to. Throughout the investigation the student’s attendance levels are important in relation to how the teachers categorize and thereafter treat the students. The investigation also highlights that the teacher does not have all the power when it comes to the assessment and grading of these students. The teachers have to relate to other discourses like the discourse of management influence, the discourse of student influence and to some extent the discourse of parental influence. These three discourses find themselves in a struggle with the discourse of teacher influence about the power over the assessment and grading.

[en] IRREGULAR REPEAT ACCUMULATE CODES: DESIGN AND EVALUATION / [pt] CÓDIGOS IRA: PROJETO E AVALIAÇÃO

MAURO QUILES DE OLIVEIRA LUSTOSA 10 January 2018 (has links)
[en] Irregular Repeat-Accumulate codes are motivated by the challenge of providing a class of codes that use linear-time encoding and decoding while communicating reliably at rates close to channel capacity. They were introduced by Hui Jin, Khandekar and McEliece in 2000, their article proves that IRA codes achieve channel capacity for the binary erasure channel and exhibit remarkably good performance on the AWGN channel. The theoretical developments supporting IRA codes stem from the efforts ar the development of capacity achieving Low-Density Parity-Check codes. LDPC codes were first proposed by Robert Gallager in 1963 and became the subject of intense research during the past decade after being dormant for a long period since its conception. Efforts by many researchers have developed its potential for channel coding in applications as diverse as satellite communications, wireless networks and streaming over IP, as well as studies on its usage in Distributed Source Coding. The goal of this dissertation is the evaluation of IRA codes and the effects of different graph construction methods in its performance. The use of the many variations of the Progressive Edge-Growth algorithm with IRA codes was tested in simulations on the AWGN channel.
