This thesis deals with the fine art based on the experience of peregrination and walking - from plein air landscape painting to the works of action art and land art. These contemporary art movements regards the act of peregrination itself as an artwork. Didactic part of this thesis aims to employment of physical experience of walking in art education.

This research explores the impact of a three day Artist Residency Program at a K-8th public school on a Native American Reservation. The program is evaluated through a lens of Social Action Art Therapy and aims to uncover how this program impacted a community— including teachers, students, and parents, and facilitators. The researcher examined social action literature, social action art literature, social action art therapy literature, as well as social action with Native Americans literature. The researcher used a qualitative approach, specifically an Inquisitive Case study, in which data was collected through the researchers notes. These notes then informed the creation of a survey that was given to teachers as well as the Artist Residency program facilitators. Next, the researcher conducted interviews for further examination of the impact. All the data was placed into an organizing table in which four main themes and three minor themes emerged. The resulting data themes include: 1) Art illuminated the students Native American Hoopa identity and culture, 2) art increased student participation, facilitated storytelling, and conversations about the student’s feelings and art provided a sense of agency, 3) art created and strengthened bonds among the students, teachers, parents and facilitators and facilitators were seen as role models for the students, and 4) the facilitator’s desire to be involved in similar art therapy social action projects increased as they were personally and professionally impacted by the Artist Residency Program. Three minor themes include: a) Some teachers found new ways to integrate art in their classroom, b) the foreign art medium choice increased risk taking, engagement, creativity as well as provided students with new skills, c) some changes noted, more time needed to see larger change. These themes were then examined in the context of art therapy social action literature and findings suggested positive impacts of the social action art therapy informed Artist Residency program.

Sob a hipótese de que a identidade individual possa ser resultado de um coletivo de influências e aspectos apreendidos com o Outro, a alteridade é investigada pela fusão entre socialização e individualização. O desenvolvimento da tese se apóia em Bartolomè Ferrando, Clèment Rosset e Axel Honneth como referenciais teóricos, bem como o estudo comparado com proposições de artistas contemporâneos, como Esther Ferrer, Isidoro Valcárcel Medina e Tracey Emin, entre outros. / This thesis studies otherness in the process of construction of an individual identity, looking for an original understanding of the term through the artistic work. Divided in two parts, this study makes use of action art and videos as its propellant languages to bring together theory and practice. The first part develops and discusses the premises performed in public spaces in the city of Bogota, Colombia, that focused on listening and serving the Other. The second part focuses on premises performed in a private setting, in an autobiographical and intimate approach of the Self. Under the hypothesis that the individual identity is a result of a set of influences and aspects learned from the Other, otherness is studied through the merge of socialization and individualization. The development of the thesis leans on Bartolomè Ferrando, Clèment Rosset and Axel Honneth as theoretical references, as well as on comparative studies in relation to premises performed by contemporary artists, such as Esther Ferrer, IsidoroValcárcel Medina and Tracey Emin, among others.

Creative Alternatives examines the intersections between cultural politics, experimental art, and the public sphere in late twentieth century Berlin. The work identifies how artists used interactive visual displays to engage with West Berlin publics, develop democratic subjectivities under state socialism in East Berlin, and reject the city’s neoliberal turn after German unification. The work also traces the role of the arts as an economic motor in late twentieth century Berlin, as city leaders responded to the pressures of globalization and interurban competition. This study of divided and unified Berlin transcends the political ruptures and geographical divisions that structure our understanding of modern Germany and hinder integrated histories of the two German states, even as it addresses issues common to major cities worldwide.

The mechanisms of disruption in paradigmatic performances of Christoph Schlingensief like “Talk 2000” and “Chance 2000” which established his reputation as “agent provocateur” are to be investigated in this paper. With his artistic events and stagings that often integrated marginalized people Schlingensief aimed less at creating scandals, but at irritating the ways of perceiving societal reality. The paper illustrates the functionality of the “image disruption machine”, Schlingensiefs mode of achieving alienation effects that implies a subversive counter-strategy against commercialization and exclusion.

From 1945 onward, post-war artists in Japan encountered two interrelated challenges: to both adjust to the war’s aftermath, and also to create a new visual language which expressed new ideas and emotions. For women artists in Japan, this time of distinct culture change allowed for a re-defining of their role in the art community as well as society. However, there were strict boundaries surrounding the institutional and academic realm of art, one that was not inviting to women, or one that allowed opportunity or growth. Nevertheless, many women artists sought to explore gender roles, the idea of womanhood, sexuality, and expression of the self. These topics were not met willingly by male counterparts or art critics, which forced women artists to constantly engage with a society that did not openly support their work. It was a tumultuous environment; however, women artists of this era truly showcased some of the most influential, explorative, experimental, and exciting avant-garde pieces that deeply affected the history of art. In the artistic community, new conversations and ideas were challenging the rigidity of a traditional Japanese society. Women artists saw this as an opportunity to insert these challenges into their art. There was an ongoing exploration of ideas that critiqued the rigid structure that the establishment enforced upon artists. In the early ‘50s, many women produced artworks that explored ideas such as self-expression, gender norms and responsibilities of womanhood.

The dissertation thesis gives a real picture of Czech artistic works from late 1980s to the present day that use the language of Conceptual and Action art for a reflection of current problems in our society. The study is to encompass socially-oriented art or tendencies that want to communicate with the inartistic context and its focus is on the social-political aspect of contemporary art. The first part of the text is focused on basic concepts, moreover, it describes the most important exhibitions, theoretical contexts or considerations associated with the concepts of political or engaged art and it includes a brief reference to examples of older socially oriented art of the 20th century. The thesis strives to give a picture of the main themes through which artists reflect on humanity within a current societal system with its various old or new phenomena. The topics and the particular relevant artworks are described in four main chapters that should reveal the working methods or the development of the artists approach or strategies of artistic groups that have simultaneously reflected changes in the Czech art scene for the past 25 years.
