The epidemiology of risk behaviour of high-school students in the Cape Peninsula, South AfricaFlisher, Alan John 27 July 2017 (has links)
Objectives: To document: (1) the prevalence of selected risk behaviours of high-school students in the Cape Peninsula; (2) whether the notion of a syndrome of adolescent risk behaviour is valid for this setting, and to investigate whether suicidal behaviour and behaviour exposing oneself to injury should be included in this syndrome; and (3) the relationships among risk behaviours, taking into account their influence upon one another. Design: The study was based on a cross-sectional survey utilising a self-completed questionnaire. Sample: A stratified random sample of 7 340 students was selected from 16 schools in the three major education departments. Results: High prevalences of risk behaviour were recorded; for example, 7,8% had tried to commit suicide in the previous year; 18, 1 % smoke cigarettes; 15,4% had engaged in binge drinking in the previous fortnight; 7,5% had ever smoked cannabis; 37,3% had failed to wear a seat belt on the last occasion this was possible; 9,8% of males had carried a knife to school and 25,0% had walked home alone at night in the previous month; and 17,4% had ever participated in sexual intercourse. With few exceptions, the unadjusted odds ratios for the relationships between pairs of these variables were significant. Between three and nine of 26 risk behaviours qualified for inclusion (p < 0,01) in each stepwise logistic regression model for each gender with each of the above risk behaviours as dependent variables. Cannabis smoking, alcohol bingeing, and exposure to danger in getting home at night were independently associated with having had sexual intercourse. Conclusions: Intervention programmes are needed to reduce the prevalence of risk behaviours in this population. The notion of a syndrome of adolescent risk behaviour is valid for this population, and both suicidal behaviour and behaviour exposing oneself to injury should be included in this syndrome. There are significant relationships between many adolescent risk behaviours even when the influence of other risk behaviours is taken into account. The probability of adverse sequalae of risk behaviours such as exposure to danger in getting home at night and sexual intercourse is amplified by the presence of selected other risk behaviours.

Evaluation of a sexual assault and dating violence prevention program for middle school studentsDeGannes, Asha Brown January 2009 (has links)
Sexual assault and dating violence among adolescents is a critical matter with potential life threatening consequences. Adolescence is a difficult stage in which personal choices (whether good or bad) can determine future lifetime successes or failures. This problem is of great concern to parents, educators and the community at-large in the United States. Among high school youth nationwide, approximately 9% of students reported that they have been forced to have sexual intercourse (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2004). Serious dating violence occurs in 1.6% of adolescent relationships...roughly 400,000 adolescents (Wolitzky-Taylor et al., 2008). Spurred by this information, a variety of programs have been developed to provide adolescents with the information and skills necessary to limit the occurrence of relationship violence. Evaluation of these programs is not mandatory and often prevention programs fail to impact students because of problems with implementation and retention of students. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate one such program, Project Awareness, a comprehensive, educational approach focusing on middle-school students. Sixty-six middle school students participated in the Project Awareness program and were administered pre- and post-program measures to examine differences in sexual assault and dating violence knowledge, attitudes and behavior. Participating in the program proved to impact female students more than males. Females gained both more knowledge about rape myths and demonstrated greater attitude change about sexual assault. Programs about sexually-related violence should be implemented in schools before high school, be conducted in single-sex classes and must be evaluated for effectiveness. / Educational Psychology

Violência psicológica: estudo com adolescentes de uma instituição escolar pública do interior do estado de São Paulo / Psychological violence: a study with adolescents in a public educational institution in the state of São PauloCavalin, Luciana Aparecida 26 September 2013 (has links)
The healthy development of adolescents is favored by interactions involving reciprocity and balance of power, however, neglectful or abusive relationships can be found in educational practices in family or school psychological violence being the most recurrent and often associated with other types of abuse. In this type of abuse the teenager is disqualified in their abilities, desires and emotions. This study aimed to investigate the exposure of adolescents to psychological violence, as well as identify its association with other types of abuse (physical, sexual, and neglect), the perpetrator and the context of occurrence. We also sought to investigate the relationship between different types of violence studied and socio-demographic variables of the respondents. Therefore we performed a cross-sectional study with a population of 218 adolescents (aged 14-18 years) of a public educational institution. These students completed a questionnaire and Psychological Violence Scale (EVP), whose data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study showed that 96,3% of students suffered psychological violence, followed by fisical violence (34,9%), sexual (7,3%) and neglect (2,8%). Over 90% of adolescents who suffered physical, sexual and psychological violence suffered neglect in mild and moderate form which shows the co-occurrence of victimization. We observed that 94,5% of students were exposed to such violence in its mild and moderate and 1,8% severe form, and only 3,7% of adolescents never responded to the 18 items asked of psychological research. These data show that psychological violence, even if experienced with mild to moderate behavior is present in the relationship with significant people in the lives of most adolescents in this study

Previous issue date: 2018-05-16 / Studies have shown a high prevalence of mental disorders in child and adolescent population in Brazil, and in the world. Investigations on pre-school children behavior in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, have identified a 12.5 % prevalence of children with behavioral problems. Objective: to evaluate the behavioral development of pre-school children in a swimming program. Method: convenience sample longitudinal study, through quantitative-qualitative analysis, performed at a swimming school in the city of São José do Rio Preto. One parent or responsible for the participants has answered to CBCL / 1 1/2 and 5-year questionnaire, before and after the swimming program, classifying the children as having "clinical" or "non-clinical" problems. A p < 0. 05 significance has been used for data analysis. Results: comparing results before and after the program, children have shown a significant improvement in 6 syndromes out of the 15 assessed by CBCL. A little significant improvement has been observed in the kids’ general behavior, and, considering gender, girls have presented a slightly more important improvement than boys. Conclusion: after the proposed swimming program, the descriptive analysis has shown significant improvement in the children’s behavior compared to the statistical analysis.
