Towards supporting tutoring in a semi-distance environmental education course: a Namibian case study

Frohlich, Georgina L. 30 June 2004 (has links)
Tutors are key supporters within semi-distance education and as such comprehensive support of tutoring is necessary to provide the best possible support to learners. This case study investigates how tutoring can be better supported within a semi-distance part-time professional development course in environmental education. The course, aimed at adults working in environmental education fields, is seen as an important strategy for helping participants become critical, reflexive and active environmental education practitioners who can start working on solutions to environmental issues. This study found that most challenges to successful tutoring lay in the availability and competence of human resources within Namibia. Additionally improvement in the management of tutor and learner support systems, information, guidance and enrolment and finally of learning resources is seen as essential to better support a successful tutoring process. An alternative model of tutoring is offered as a way of overcoming the major tutoring challenges outlined in this study. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.

The effects of resilience training as a component of strengths-focussed training on team performance : a case study in the food and beverages manufacturing industry

De Beer, Annelize 31 January 2006 (has links)
The study determines the effects of resilience training on team performance. An investigation was undertaken to: * establish a theoretical foundation for using resilience training to improve performance; * identify parameters and criteria for determining the effects of resilience training on the individual within the team; * gain insight on how learners experienced the resilience training; and * whether they implemented the resilience training within the workplace. This study included the review of literature on various motivational theories, resilience, psycho-education, adult learning and team performance. It also included an empirical investigation on the effects of resilience training on the individual within the team and the team performance as such. Data was collected against the main research question: What is the effect of strengths-focussed training on team performance? / Educational Studies / M.Ed. (Didactics)

Badenhorst, Johanna Willemina 11 1900 (has links)
It is not an exaggeration to maintain that the educational system in South Africa finds itself in the midst of a crisis. It can furthermore not be denied that tertiary education in particular is profoundly involved in this crisis. The dilemma which presently manifests in the educational sector is without doubt the result of the prolonged apartheidspolicy of the past. The tertiary sector, in particular, reflects an inadequate consideration of the unique needs of the broader community. In an effort to level the educational playfield, incisive changes and reconstruction are currently taking place in the broader educational sector. Various educational imperatives emerge:Affirmative action with regard to the discrepency in educational standards have to be addressed; The future educational needs of the growing South African population have to be accommodated; Qualified manpower that has to be provided so as to ensure a viable and progressive economy; The unique problems of large numbers of individuals who are unskilled or who are in possession of an inferior school education, have to be considered. A major obstacle in the way of addressing the aforementioned problem areas, is lecturers' apparent lack of sufficient teaching and accompaniment skills. Various research findings are quoted which point to the fact that the majority of lecturers are trapped in a spiral of obtaining qualifications and publishing research findings. This process unfortunately impacts negatively on effective teaching and the accompaniment of students. ·A related finding confirms that more than 80% of all lecturers at selected tertiary institutions in South Africa are not in possession of a professional teaching qualification. A questionnaire was developed in order to establish to which degree confirmation could be found in practice for the literature findings and also to establish lecturers' general perceptions with regard to the teaching profession. Emphasis was placed on the different components of the lecturing task. Three broad categories of lecturers were involved in the study, namely those representing: Historically Afrikaans Institutions; Historically English Institutions; and Historically black institutions. In view of the findings of the empirical study, practice-based guidelines for teaching and accompaniment within andragogical context were put forward. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. (Orthopedagogics)

O ENSINO DE MATEMÁTICA NA EJA EM ESCOLAS MUNICIPAIS DE SANTA MARIA / MATHEMATIC TEACHING AT EJA IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS FROM SANTA MARIA

Rodrigues, Paulo Roberto 08 May 2008 (has links)
This study, of qualitative nature, describes a research, developed from March to December of 2007, in public schools with the purpose to accomplish a general characterization of Mathematic Curricular Proposals within the reality of Adults and Young Education(EJA), in their school period equivalent to 5th and 6th grade of Elementary School and it also seek to identify the level of compatibility presented by the respective pedagogical practices used for students development in classroom. We accomplished this research with the main motivation of contributing with the public net of teaching to (re)think and (re)elaborate the interventional methodological practices with students from EJA, considering that in this context the Mathematic teaching has showed itself a hard work for the teacher, for the teacher must teach a subject that most of the students considers important, they need to apply it in their day-by-day situations but they have extreme difficulty to attribute meaning. We sought also, in this study, to accomplish a brief approach about thematic related to teacher education to act in EJA and related to adults learning process. As methodological procedures, we used interviews with teachers and coordinators of this schools, observation in classroom, questionnaire used with an amount of pupils and documents analysis. The data gathered helped to elaborate some conclusions that allowed us to assure, firstly, that the curricular proposals from the schools investigated are coherent with legal and theoretical signalizations for the teaching of this kind of school. In a second place, that the expositive classes using textbook is yet the main strategy for development of Mathematic pedagogical practices, it means, the EJA continues being developed by a model elaborated for children and for pre-adolescent, and, for last, that it does not have yet a collaborative practice in the sense of changing experiences among the Mathematic teachers from the schools researched.

A formação continuada dos monitores no Programa de inclusão digital AcessaSP / The continuing education of monitors Digital Inclusion Program AcessaSP.

Cristiane Henriques Rodrigues Chica 22 October 2010 (has links)
This thesis intends to contribute to the discussion related to classroom and online continuing education of young and adult professionals who work as agents of digital inclusion in public internet access centers, and to contribute to the formulation of best practices. As such, an examination of the Continuing Education Project of AcessaSP Digital Inclusion Program, which includes one thousand, one hundred and seventy two instructors scattered across the State of São Paulo, was held with the objective of analyzing the impacts of continuing education in the qualification of these professionals and establishing a connection between the Programs continuing education proposal and a theory on adult learning. This paper aims to answer the following question: In what sense the continuing education offered to the instructors of AcessaSP digital inclusion program contributes to the qualification of these professionals and ensures an effective learning of actions that are part of this activity? By acknowledging that the object under study is part of a particular context, this research is characterized as a case study, according to the description of Ludke and André (1986), and has used a hybrid methodology, as it involves quantitative and qualitative aspects. As sources of information, two types of questionnaires were used, one with closed and multiple choice questions given to the entire group of Program instructors, and one with open questions given to a selected group according to determined criteria, leading us to gather answers to the proposed problem. The concepts of andragogy and heutagogy, as current perspectives on adult learning, contributed in defining the main theoretical reference for this thesis, complemented by mapping the discussions of various authors on adult education.

This thesis is focused on understanding the meanings constructed by future teachers learning with and about digital technologies within the discipline of Information Technology and Communications (ITEC) of the Faculty of Education FACED / UFJF. The search, conducted within the research group Language, Interaction and Knowledge (LIC) in the Faculty of Education UFJF, was founded in historical and cultural studies of the constitution of the human being. It is understood that the students of Pedagogy adults are in the process of learning and development that have specific and particular requirements and learn about digital technologies. It lies in the work of Vygotsky that the wire for guiding the discussion of adult learning and appropriation of digital culture by the subjects investigated. Also Bakhtin and Paulo Freire were important partners in the development of this work. The aim is to highlight some concepts relevant to this study: ownership, sense and meaning, digital culture, collaboration, zone of proximal development and active understanding. The teaching-learning process of the students in the discipline ITEC was accompanied in the first semester of 2010, from observation in collaborative classes taught in Infocentro and learning environment Moodle together with other methodological tools: questionnaire; Daily Online learning environment Moodle on two activities, students' written productions (messages in the discussion forums online texts and groups, projects and final evaluation); interview and dialogue with the teacher. To understand the statements of the subjects, was built facing a look evidentiary clues and evidence in order to establish relations between the singular facts and historical context broader cultural. The signs were constructed: evidence of significance and meanings of digital culture in the course of Pedagogy; evidence of ownership, collaboration and tension in and learn about digital technologies for the adult student; evidence of the relationship of learning to teach. Research has shown that discipline ITEC contributed to future teachers build meanings and other senses to learn and teach with digital technology. The study showed also that digital technologies by themselves do not account for the teaching-learning process and that the "other" is irreplaceable in the relations of teaching and learning. Accordingly, circumscribes the importance of mediation of the teacher in the discipline, had a dual role: mediating knowledge and teaching with and about digital technologies in education.

Quality assurance of continuing professional development programmes for language teachers

Mlombo, Samson January 2013 (has links)
There seems to be a lack of synchronisation between the acquisition of skills, knowledge, values, teaching techniques, and so forth from professional learning interventions and the application thereof in practice by teachers in general and language teachers in particular. Those charged with ensuring that teachers‟ development needs, in terms of Collective Agreement 8 of 2003 (DoE, 2003), receive attention, seem to be complying with that prerequisite without establishing whether such interventions really do address the need for development. This study focuses on the quality assurance of workshops meant to address the professional development needs of language teachers. This was explored in terms of learning theories informing methods used when facilitating professional development workshops for teachers and the assessment of teachers during the workshops, including evaluation of the workshops themselves and the quality assurance of those workshops. The study has found, among others, that the methods used during facilitation are not sourced from a variety of professional learning theories, including different learning styles that accommodate teachers who learn differently from others; a variety of assessment methods is not used to assess language teachers during the workshop sessions and quality assurance of the workshops internally and externally scarcely takes place. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2013 / Science, Mathematics and Technology Education / unrestricted

Learning orientations of FET students: the case of the Applied Learning Programme in a Western Cape FET college

Hamman, Liza January 2011 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / This study investigated the reasons why FET part-time students enrolled at a FET college by examining their learning orientations. Guided by the literature, the focus was on the vocational orientation to learning and orientations to learning were further investigated within the vocational orientation based on orientations developed for part-time students found in the literature. In addition, it was investigated whether students' expectations have been met and if they were satisfied with the college experience. Lastly, the study examined the relevance of college learning to the world of work and the contribution it made to the career development of learners in a globalising world. The research shows that part-time students enrol at FET colleges predominantly for vocational reasons and the majority of the students were enrolled in order to advance their careers and associated with a vocational orientation to learning. However, it emerged that reasons for learning within the vocational orientation to learning are often multi-faceted and complex. The most important findings are 3 new learning orientations for part-time students that were identified: 'education for a qualification', 'education for adults who previously made the wrong choice' and 'education for adults as a model for their children'. Furthermore, the findings indicate that learners were satisfied with the programme they were enrolled in because they believed that the qualification would enable them to achieve their vocational aims which were primarily to find a new job, to be promoted and to increase their income. The findings suggest that the programme that was examined was relevant to the world of work, promoted employability and that it made a significant and important contribution to students' career development in a globalising world. / South Africa

Critical theory, adult learning and‘xenophobia’: a critical perspective on umoja wa Afrika’s human rights peer education programme

Hendricks, Mohammed Natheem January 2011 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / The impact of global migration on local contexts has spawned new issues and a range of social responses. These include the emergence of ‘xenophobia’ in the terrain of discrimination and the subsequent development of popular educational responses to this. As part of popular educational responses, adult education programmes have assumed an important role in changing people’s attitudes. This long research paper presents a critical analysis of how a human rights and counter-xenophobia peer educators’ programme enables young adults to develop a critical consciousness about human rights and ‘xenophobia’. The research focused on learning materials, course content, training methodology and processes of a three-day human rights and counter-xenophobia workshop held by Umoja wa Afrika, a local non-governmental organization, in March/April 2007 at Goedgedacht, just outside Cape Town. The research was based on qualitative methodology which included an exploration of relevant literature, interviews with participants and facilitators, as well as the researcher’s critical reflections. The research was located within a critical theory framework in the field of adult learning, and drew from the work of Paulo Freire (1970) and Stephen Brookfield(2005).The key finding of the study is that the experience of the workshop enabled participants to develop a critical awareness - but not necessarily a critical understanding of human rights and ‘xenophobia’. The participants identified specific factors that contributed to such awareness. These included the diverse composition of participants, the ‘accompanying’ facilitation style, and the interactive training methodology. This study makes a contribution to understanding human rights peer education in the South African context and the extent to which such provision could enable participants to develop a critical understanding of human rights and xenophobia. This study is an attempt to make an original contribution in this area. As such it adds to literature in applied critical methodology.
