As novas tecnologias de comunicação têm transformado sobremaneira o mundo em que vivemos, incluindo aí a cultura. Neste contexto, muito se discute sobre o futuro da literatura e dos livros, mas este estudo evita especular sobre a permanência ou não do objeto livro e prefere investigar as possibilidades da criação literária diante de novos suportes de leitura, em especial o iPad. Assim como outrora a invenção da imprensa forjou o romance e a popularização das revistas e jornais consolidou o conto moderno, investiga-se de que forma ferramentas próprias das novas tecnologias são utilizadas para a criação de textos literários diferentes do texto impresso, a chamada literatura digital. Para fazer essa comparação, foram usados os dois célebres romances de Lewis Carroll, Alice no País das Maravilhas e Através do Espelho e o que Alice Encontrou por lá, e duas versões da Atomic Antelope, de Chris Stephens, para iPad: Alice for iPad e Alice in New York. Ao final do estudo, que discute também a questão do fim do livro e da literatura, traçando um longo histórico da leitura e contextualizando o livro no que se chama de Era Digital, espera-se mostrar como as possibilidades de criação para plataformas digitais podem ir além do que hoje entendemos por livros, motivo pelo qual a permanência da literatura, independente do seu suporte, está assegurada. / New communication technologies have immensely changed the world in which we live, as well as its culture. This study avoided speculating about the persistence of books as physical objects, and, rather, investigated the possibilities of literary creation in face of the new reading media, particularly the iPad. As the invention of the press forged the novel, and the popular spread of magazines and newspapers consolidated modern short stories in the past, we currently investigate how new technological tools may be used to create literary texts, called digital literature, that are different from the print-based text. For this comparison, we used two renowned novels by Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, and two versions of the Atomic Antelope, by Chris Stephens, for iPad: Alice for iPad and Alice in New York. This study also discussed the possible demise of books and literature by outlining the long history of reading that has set the context for books in the Digital Era; Therefore, it demonstrated that the possibilities of literary creation for digital platforms may go beyond what we understand to be books today, which is why the persistence of literature, regardless of what medium it uses, is ensured.

Previous issue date: 2016-02-17 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Considering the narrative Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, classical story of the
English Children Literature, was formerly orally told by its author Charles Ludwig
Dodgson (who lately published it under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll) to three little
girls from the Lidell family, Alice among them, in a boat ride, we will search in this
story indications of orality, as some explicative, descriptive and/or interactive
passages, which prevail in the written text, revealing a established dialogue between
writer and readers through the mediation of the narrator. For that, we are going to
consider three versions of the same text: the original manuscript Alice’s Adventures
Under Ground, the published book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and a short
version for small children The Nursery Alice. Then we are going to verify the
permanence of this dialogue in three Portuguese language translations, the ones
from Monteiro Lobato (1931), Ana Maria Machado (2000) and Tatiana Belinky
(2008). We are going to concern specially about the Monteiro Lobato one, since it is
the one who concerned in adapt not only the language, but the environment and
characters of the story to our Brazilian culture. We consider the hypothesis of this
interaction as a factor that has collaborated for the permanence of this story, still
considered a classic of universal literature, once it brings interventions about its
reading, what can help readers from different contexts (in place and time) to
understand the text. Besides that, we intend to analyze how this interactive resource
has been used in other cases of Brazilian Children Literature, as in the novels written
by Monteiro Lobato, Clarice Lispector, Lygia Bojunga, among others. To do this
study, we are going to support our researches in the notion of literary system by
Antonio Candido (1959), in studies about literary translations of Bassnet (1980) and
reception theory by Iser (1983), and in concepts of readers formation and reading
mediation by Hunt (1991), Lajolo (2001), Colomer (2003) and Petit (2008). / Considerando que a narrativa Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, clássica história da
literatura infantil inglesa, foi inicialmente contada oralmente por seu autor Charles
Ludwig Dodgson (que posteriormente a publicou sob o pseudônimo de Lewis Carroll)
a três meninas da família Lidell, entre elas Alice, em um passeio de barco,
buscaremos na obra indícios da oralidade, como alguns trechos explicativos,
descritivos e/ou interativos, que permanecem no texto escrito, revelando um diálogo
estabelecido entre autor e leitores pela intermediação do narrador. Para isso,
consideraremos três versões do mesmo texto: o manuscrito original Alice’s
Adventures Under Ground, a obra publicada Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland e a
versão abreviada para crianças pequenas The Nursery Alice. A partir disso,
verificaremos a permanência desse diálogo em três traduções para a Língua
Portuguesa, sendo elas as realizadas por Monteiro Lobato (1931), Ana Maria
Machado (2000) e Tatiana Belinky (2008). Atentar-nos-emos em especial à de
Monteiro Lobato, por ser a primeira tradução da obra para a Língua Portuguesa e
porque apresentou preocupação em adaptar não apenas a linguagem, mas também
os elementos espaciais e as personagens da obra para a cultura brasileira.
Consideramos a hipótese de que essa interação seja fator que contribua para a
permanência da obra até os dias de hoje, sendo considerada um clássico da
literatura universal, uma vez que traz intervenções em sua leitura, auxiliando leitores
de diferentes contextos (espaciais e temporais) na sua compreensão. Além disso,
buscaremos analisar como esse recurso de interação parece ter sido utilizado em
outros casos da Literatura Infantil Brasileira, como em obras de Monteiro Lobato,
Clarice Lispector, Lygia Bojunga, entre outros. Para a realização de tal estudo, nos
apoiaremos na noção de sistema literário de Antonio Candido (1959), em estudos
sobre tradução literária de Bassnet (1980) e estética da recepção de Iser (1983), e
nas concepções de formação de leitores e mediação de leitura de Hunt (1991),
Lajolo (2001), Colomer (2003) e Petit (2008).

This thesis is a theoretical analysis of the phenomenon of traveling from an ethical point of view. The analysis focuses mainly on the ethical aspects of individual travels of European travelers with regards to cultural contact with different people and also taking into consideration the European tradition of travel. Based on this analysis, an ethical framework is proposed as a tool of interpretation of selected texts that reflect the travel adventures of exceptional Czech travelers, such as A. V. Frič, J. Hanzelka and M. Zikmund, M. Zelený among the Indians of South America. The above mentioned Czech travelers described their travel experiences in the form of ethnographic travelogues and other texts. The aim of this study was, by analysing certain parts of selected ethnographic texts of these Czech travelers - explores, to reveal their individual ethical reflections of the experienced adventures and to interpret it. I have attempted to describe each studied Czech traveler's specific ethical approach to "otherness" in the extreme conditions of their adventures among the Indians of South America. Holmes, Alice, and Ezeulu: Western Rationality in the Context of British Colonialism and Western ModernitySchultz, Andrew B. 19 July 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis examines Western rationality, contextualizing that subject in British colonialism and Western modernity. Using Scott Lash's description of academic characterizations of modernity, I explore the “high" modernity of the social sciences represented in the books Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. I then explore the cultural studies critique of that characterization of modernity in the book Arrow of God by Chinua Achebe. Using the theory of Jean Francois Lyotard, Martin Heidegger, and Theodor Adorno, I look at Western rationality through its manifestation in British colonialism. I argue that colonialism is a site where rationality's negative legacy is manifest, and that the paradoxical representations of rationality in the books by Carroll and Doyle indicate a problem with the assumption that Western rationality was a universal epistemology. Contrary to the British's own ideas of their rationality, I find that Western rationality is ultimately a culturally-grounded discourse. Using Chinua Achebe's Arrow of God, I examine the intersection between Western rationality and other forms of cultural knowledge, an intersection that occurred through British colonialism. Achebe argues against the universal model of Western rationality and posits instead a relative valuing of each culture's methods of arriving at truth. I use his novel to illustrate the limits of Western rationality and its claim to universality.

Adaptations cinématographiques d’Alice au pays des merveilles et De l’autre côté du miroir de Lewis Carroll: Analyse des transécritures de Walt Disney, Jan Švankmajer et Tim Burton observe comment trois versions cinématographiques différentes, provenant d’un même texte source, peuvent être singulières les unes par rapport aux autres. Le but de ce mémoire est d’analyser les transécritures de Walt Disney (1951), de Jan Švankmajer (1989) et de Tim Burton (2010) autant dans les changements narratifs que dans les ajouts faits par les réalisateurs qui personnalisent l’adaptation. Pour ce faire, nous nous appuierons sur la notion d’idée de Deleuze. The goal of this essay is to analyze the adaptations of Walt Disney (1951), Jan Švankmajer (1989) and Tim Burton (2010) from the narrative choices to what directors added in order to personalize the adaptation. To do so, we rely on Deleuze’s notion of ideas. Every analyze is being divided by: the meeting of the novel’s ideas and the film’s ideas, by ideas that have been added or modified, and by ideas that were eliminated by the adaptor-filmmaker.
