Får vi be om största, möjliga prioritering : En scoping review om samhällets beredskap för äldre personer med alkoholmissbruk / May we ask for the highest possible priority : – A scoping review on society'spreparedness for elderly people with alcohol abuse.

Eklöf, Rickard January 2023 (has links)
In recent years, it has been reported about an increasingly large aging population and that the substance abuse problem has increased for people over the age of 65. Despite this, there are no specific guidelines for older people with addiction problems. Society may face a major challenge where an increasingly large aging population with social problems risks being left without help. This study therefore aims to investigate what kind of help older people with alcohol abuse receive and what advantages and obstacles there are for treatment.  With the aim of getting an overview of the field, a scoping review was used to collect data. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data, with the hope of seeing a new angle in the articles. The results show that there is a lack of research in older people with substance abuse and also a lack of knowledge to design adequate help. It also appears that professionals believe that their work with elderly people can be compared to working in a gray area, where their responsibilities often become vague. The gray area is largely since the social service's care for the elderly, welfare officers and individual and family care are lacking in their cooperation. Although the results also show that there are some ways of working is better than others, the importance of new research is emphasized to provide the right help.

Ahlberg, Emma January 2023 (has links)
Elderly people, meaning people who are 65 years of age or older, is a relatively forgotten group within the media covering. The group is rarely seen within the media, and they rarely get an opportunity to speak their mind. This is mostly visible when questions regarding older people are discussed, since older people will rarely be involved. This study aims to investigate how older people are portrayed in media today. Using the critical discourse analysis, 20 articles from the two biggest daily newspapers in Sweden: Aftonbladet and Expressen will be analyzed. Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory are used to contribute to increased understanding of how the situation of how discourses regarding older people is presented by the media.

Äldres uppfattning om att åldras : -En kvalitativ intervjustudie om ålderism och att åldras i dagens samhälle / ELDERS PERCEPTION OF AGING : - a qualitative interview study about ageism and aging in today's society

Mononen, Ella, Söderström, Elin January 2023 (has links)
Aging is inevitable, yet in society there is a negative attitude about aging and a lack of knowledge about what ageism is. There is therefore a need to study ageism and perspectives on aging in social work. This study is a qualitative interview study that examines elderly's perception of ageism through their attitudes about aging and how the elderly are treated based on their age. The empirical data has been collected through six individual interviews, with three women and three men. The sample for the study is people over 65 years old who are members of an elderly association. The material has been analyzed with a thematic analysis along with previous research and the theories of ageism, stigma and stereotyping. The conclusions that could be drawn from the study are that elderly people who are healthy and have a good social network have an increased chance of well-being in their old age. At the same time, the study shows that there is widespread ageism in society, which the elderly notice in different ways, but is not an obstacle for a good life. The study contributes to increasing understanding of ageism and provides perspective on aging in today's society.

Ageist Perceptions In Personnel Selection Decisions: A Prejudice-reduction Intervention

Marcus, Justin 01 January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of the current study was to examine whether older job applicants are discriminated against relative to younger job applicants when changing careers, and to investigate whether an intervention designed to reduce stereotyping and prejudice could alleviate such unfair discrimination, if it was found. A between-subjects laboratory experiment with three factors was conducted, including age (young vs. old job applicant), career-transition type (within- vs. between-career transition), and a dual-identity based recategorization intervention (control vs. intervention), totaling 8 experimental conditions. Data were collected and analyzed from 157 undergraduate student participants. Participants were informed that they would be evaluating the viability of using video-resumes as a potential organizational selection tool, and were randomly assigned to watch a video-resume depicting a White male job applicant applying for the job of mechanical engineer. The job applicant was either younger or older and was either making a career change that was more similar to his previous career (i.e., naval architect) or less similar to his previous career (i.e., chiropractor). In the intervention conditions, the job applicant emphasized his age and the fact that he graduated from UCF; in the control conditions, he only emphasized his age and his educational background from a generic university. An actor in his early twenties played the role of the job applicant. Make-up was applied to age his face, and computer software was used to age his voice. After viewing the video-resumes, participants judged his suitability for hire, competence, warmth, loyalty, and suitability for training. A Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) was conducted and a significant 3-way interaction was found between age, career-transition type, and intervention on both ratings of suitability for hire and on competence ratings. Counter to theory, the older job applicant was negatively impacted relative to the younger applicant when attempting to build a common ingroup identity with the younger decision-maker. These findings were discussed within the context of theories on attribution and impression management, and discussed relative to prior research utilizing the dual-identity based recategorization intervention method. Implications for older workers making career transitions are discussed.

Intergenerational Relations in Later Life: Theory, Co-Housing, and Social Dynamics

Hatzifilalithis, Stephanie January 2022 (has links)
With the rise of intergenerational programming (e.g., intergenerational co-housing) across Canada and a demographic shift whereby the number of people 65 years and over is expected to almost double from 13.2% to 24.5% by 2036, mechanisms supporting intergenerational relations are crucial. Intergenerational landscapes (IL) is a term I use to describe all that is across, between, and within generational cohorts. The conceptual understandings of intergenerational landscapes and how they could be beneficial (or detrimental) in later life require revisiting in gerontological research. This dissertation uses a multi-method qualitative design to examine conceptual frameworks, experienced relations, and contemporary dynamics of IL. I am investigating IL at diverse locations of experience emphasizing the voices of both older and younger people. This includes, a conceptual review of intergenerational knowledge (Paper One), the intersections of intergenerational dynamics in a co-housing setting (Paper Two), and an autoethnographic account of managing an intergenerational co-housing project (Paper Three). This dissertation focuses on conceptual models, how paradigms of IL are reproduced in practice, and how contemporary dynamics are experienced in a Canadian context. This thesis aims to initiate a meaningful dialogue on how current theorizing requires revisiting, given the contemporary landscape. This thesis supports the advancement of academic knowledge, programming, and public policy in aging research. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / The aim of this thesis is to understand how contemporary conditions, such as population aging, may influence intergenerational relations. In this dissertation, I examine conceptual understandings, social influences, and people’s experiences of intergenerational co-housing. In the first section of this dissertation, I suggest a new language to discuss the 'intergenerational’ and highlight the importance of critical gerontological perspectives. I then examine how participants of an intergenerational co-housing program experience their living arrangement against a backdrop of contemporary change through a critical realist lens. I then turn to an autoethnographic account of managing an intergenerational co-housing project that sheds light on features of contemporary society that impact intergenerational realities. Finally, this research suggests ways to better discuss and debate intergenerational ideas and how they are related to aging, the field of gerontology, and older people.

Ageism: A literature review

Lindqvist, Jessica January 2013 (has links)
Background: The studies analyzed have shown among other things that ageism appears to be an overlooked category in intersectionality studies, elderly is offered care in worse conditions than non-elderly and stereotypes restrict elderlys social space to act. The gray tsunami is approaching but studies show that large gaps separate different agegroups.Aims: The study discuss how scientists reason about ageism towards elderly in a social science discussion.Method: A literature review was conducted in which fifteen articles were analyzed. The database used, is the librariescatalog Summon, at Malmö University. The articles was compiled in themes to give dilated clarity in ageisms complexity towards elderly. The results are being discussed on the basis of terror management theory, gerotranscendence and social identitity theory. Results: Elderlys relation to society's expectations about aging can affect a self/body-dualism, a split. Scientists are often looking for one explanation to include all elders which gives the effect of homogenizing the group. Terror management (TMT) may explain young people's anxiety based on notions of elderly and aging. Social identity theory (SIT) could be one explanation of elderlys ageism towards their own age group, which has shown to be built on societies conceptions about aging and elderly. Conclusion: It is shown an eminent need to examine ageism more. The articles reason that many elderly undergoes a self/body dualism split, where aging can not be accepted because of society's perceptions of it. Elderly homogenized through stereotypes to which properties are attributed. By perceptions of elderly as different and acting in a way non-elderly can´t understand, because the lack of experience. Therefor, the theory of gerotranscendense can be discussed as one explanation for the distance and or that some of the non-elderly have difficulty identifying with some of the elderly.

Witch hunts and the intersections of gender, age and class : A feminist analysis on the Western European witch hunts in the 16th and 17th century.

de Koeijer, Bente January 2022 (has links)
Aim: The aim of this thesis is to elucidate the effects of gender, age, and class in witch hunts in the sixteenth and seventeenth century in Western Europe from a feminist perspective. It also aims to understand the perception of these witch hunts in our present society. It centers poor, old, women who were accused of witchcraft. Methods: a literature review will be performed to collect literature on witch hunts. Secondary analysis of this literature will be performed using an intersectional theoretical framework. Results: the spread of christianity through Europe brought a new political ideology that divided labour into sexes. The role of women was reduced to childbearing and household tasks. Medicine became institutionalised. There was no protection for poor people or aged people in the new political ideology. Conclusion: the new political ideology affected poor, old women most: they were no longer able to fulfil childbearing duties, could no longer practice as healers or midwives, and were not protected by the state. Due to the misogynistic, ageist and classist values at the time, their expressions of frustration could then be interpreted as witchery. Moreover, lookism could have been a factor in witch accusations.
