Odilon Redon, the visual poet of Edgar Allan Poe : a study of the lithographic album 'A Edgar Poë'

Kessenich, Veronica L. January 2004 (has links)
Odilon Redon, The Visual Poet of Edgar Allan Poe: A Study of the Lithographic Album A Edgar Poe argues that the album A Edgar Poe, published in 1882, fundamentally alters Redon's artistic career. The thesis advocates the importance of Poe's writing to Redon's development, contending that the lithographic album confirms nineteenth-century literary and artistic interest in Poe. The thesis maintains that, while Redon subsequently attempted to disassociate himself from the American writer, his art was recognized and admired for its Poe-esque visions. Chapter One examines Edgar Allan Poe's influence on the nineteenth-century French artistic and literary avant-garde. The chapter argues that the artistic and spiritual resemblance between Poe and Redon facilitates the design the lithographic album A Edgar Poe, a work Redon uses to promote his own standing as an artist. Through examination of the original plates of the lithographic album A Edgar Poe at The Art Institute of Chicago, Chapter Two illustrates Poe's centrality to the evolution of Redon's art. Chapter Three argues for the importance of A Edgar Poe in Redon's oeuvre, contending that subsequent albums and commissions show the important role of literary art in Redon's artistic growth. The chapter demonstrates the significance of Redon's work to the Symbolist avant-garde of Brussels. Utilizing Andre Mellerio's notes, essays, collected letters and writings in the Ryerson & Burnham Library at the Art Institute of Chicago, the thesis argues that the album A Edgar Poe represents a pivotal stage in Redon's career through its dedication to a literary artist and the unification of art and poetry. Contending that the album develops themes prevalent in the noirs, the thesis illustrates the artistic resemblance and relationship between Poe and Redon and emphasizes the crucial role of Poe's work in Redon's progression and acceptance as an artist.

K vybraným překladům básnické skladby The Raven od E. A. Poea - pokus o komparaci / Concerning Chosen Translations of the Poem The Raven by E. A. Poe - an Attempt at a Comparison

GRÚZ, Michael January 2014 (has links)
The topic of the diploma thesis is Concerning Chosen Translations of the Poem The Raven by E. A. Poe - an Attempt at a Comparison. The thesis deals with the comparison of Czech translations which have been written over the period of the last twenty years. The original text would be also dealt with, since there come up distinct shifts of meaning within the process of translation. However, the author will not omit different aesthetical qualities of the original and target language. An observation of schoolbooks for teaching literature at secondary and high schools will be added together with an attempt to determine the most frequently included translation which could therefore be considered as canonic. The output of the thesis should be an analysis evaluating whether including the translation in schoolbooks is appropriate and offering a constructive suggestion on an alternative one.

Autoajuda e divulgação científica : interseções

Santana, Patricia Nardelli Pinto January 2014 (has links)
Self-help literature is a recent phenomenon about which there have been few considerations. Among its many examples, there are those which greatly take from scientific resources in order to get their point across and base their orientations. This dissertation is about the works of two best-selling authors in this genre, Allan and Barbara Pease, intending to discuss them as scientific divulgation material. Through an ethnographic analysis I’ve tried to give context to this production of a scientific self-help literature, connecting it with wider social aspects and investigating the notions of gender, sex and nature in them. This effort is made under the studies of scientific divulgation which means it recognizes the question as a relation that goes both ways between scientific knowledge and common-sense. Thus, I raise a discussion about the content of the authors' books in relation to other materials written about this subject, and I also analyze the way in which their scientific sources are gathered. Finally, I intend to understand the phenomenon of scientific self-help literature in the biopolitical context of the 21st century.

Its objective is to investigate and to describe the rippling influences of a literary text (authentic material) as a didactic material. The guiding question to this study was: what are the contributions of a literary text (authentic materials) as a didactic resource to the process of teaching and learning of a foreign language as well as to students’ motivation? The corpus of the research was the short story “the Black Cat” by American author, Edgar Allan Poe. The collecting of the data happened during a didactic sequence (DS) with students in the 1st year of High School in a public institution in the city of Trindade- GO, their ages ranging from 14 and 16 years old. For the data analysis, two questionnaires were used, one initial questionnaire and a final questionnaire, and the activities carried out during the DS. This study was based on theories on the Short Story, Literature and didactic materials, using some of the following authors: (1994), Calvino (1990), Candido (1995, 2004), Campagnon (2009), Eco (2003), Duarte (2016), Leffa (1999), Pessoa (2009), Almeida Filho (2013), Almeida Filho e Barbirato (2000), amongst others. The analysis adumbrated that the practice of literary readings and the utilization of authentic materials in the foreign language classroom can motivate and contribute, in a positive way, to the teaching and learning process. Thus, we hope that this work can be a rich source of information to the pedagogic practices of other foreign language (FL) teachers, since there is not only the improvement of pedagogical practices, but also the value of theoretical reflection.

Instrumentation d'un récepteur hétérodyne à 2.6 THz / Instrumentation of a 2.6 THz heterodyne receiver

Defrance, Fabien 14 December 2015 (has links)
(Sub)Millimeter-telescopes are often used to observe the interstellar medium in the universe and they enable us to study the stellar life cycle. To detect and study some important molecules and ions, we need receivers able to observe at frequencies above 1 THz. Receivers working at such high frequencies are quite new and the 2.6 THz heterodyne receiver I built and characterized during my PhD represents the state-of-the-art of THz heterodyne receivers. I especially focused on three important aspects of this receiver: its stability, the superimposition of the local oscillator signal (LO) and the observed signal by a diplexer, and the splitting of the LO signal by a phase grating. The stability was calculated with the Allan variance and I found that the two elements limiting the stability of our receiver were the 1.4 THz local oscillator and the mixer bias supply. The Martin-Puplett interferometer (MPI) diplexer I designed, built and tested is able to transmit 76 % of the LO power at 2.6 THz and we estimate a transmittance around 79 % for the observed signal. This MPI is operational and ready for the next generation of heterodyne receivers. Splitting the LO signal is essential to build heterodyne receivers with several pixels, which allows us to get spectra of the universe at many positions in the sky simultaneously. I have developed a new kind of grating, called Global gratings, and I made two prototypes of these Global phase gratings able to split the LO beam into four beams. These two phase grating prototypes, a transmissive and a reflective one, were optimized for 610 GHz and showed, respectively, an efficiency of 62 ± 2 % and 76 ± 2 %. These excellent results validate the design and fabrication processes of this new kind of grating. In conclusion, the work accomplished during this PhD constitutes an important step toward the realization of a very stable and highly sensitive 2.6 THz multi-pixel heterodyne receiver using a MPI diplexer.

Steenbok, Arthur-Ashe 25 May 2006 (has links)
The Coloured community of Southern Africa, just like other ethnic groups, has been shaped by many factors (politics, economy, secularization, etc.). This ‘otherness’ also caused God to be regarded in a unique way – his role in this world, his involvement in this community and, finally, what his church should look like and how it should function. The crux of this mini dissertation is to look specifically at this unique image of God. I humbly apologize for my use of classification and I do not want to revert to the former dispensation, but it is of the utmost importance for matters such as church union that colour and opinions be discussed. The story of the Uniting Reformed Church of Southern Africa between 1976 and 2005 has been followed in greater detail both with a church historical and autobiographical approach. Some perspectives on the future of this church are provided. / Dissertation (MDiv (Church History))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

Paul, Esther January 2017 (has links)
