Existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions to semilinear elliptic problems via reduction methods

Agudelo Rico, Óscar Iván January 2012 (has links)

Reconstructing the depositional history of the Eel River paleo meltwater channel, northeastern Indiana using sediment provenance techniques

Goodwin, Charles B. 03 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The outwash deposits of the Eel River paleo meltwater channel in DeKalb and Allen Counties, Indiana predominantly originated from the Erie Lobe of the Laurentide Ice Sheet, but do contain some sediment from the Saginaw Lobe. This determination helps clarify the ice dynamics and Last Glacial Maximum sediment depostional history in northeastern Indiana, which is complicated because of the interactions between the Erie and Saginaw Lobes. Outwash deposits were analyzed from IGS core SC0802 in the Eel River paleo meltwater channel, which intersects the previously identified Huntertown Formation. The core includes 29.2 m of deposits underlain by the hard glacial till of the Trafalgar formation. Mean grain size, sediment skewness, lithology, magnetic susceptibility, and quantitative X-ray diffraction were used to evaluate the provenance of the outwash deposits. Representative samples of Erie Lobe and Saginaw Lobe deposits were analyzed to develop end member provenance signatures. A weight of evidence approach was developed and revealed that deposits from 8.0-13.8 m are of mixed origin from the Erie and Saginaw Lobes, whereas the 0-8.0 and 13.8-29.2 m deposits are Erie Lobe in origin. Cluster analysis and discriminant function analysis supported the findings of this approach. These findings suggests that the Eel River paleo meltwater channel was formed as an outwash channel, and that the adjacent Huntertown Formation does not appear to have been directly deposited by the Saginaw Lobe. The sediments of Saginaw origin from ~8-14 m in the Eel River paleo meltwater channel were likely transported from an upgradient source. The sediments from this zone have a larger mean grain size indicating deposition occurred during higher meltwater discharge, such as the release of meltwater from the drainage of proglacial or subglacial lake(s) associated with the disintegration of the Saginaw Lobe, thus resulting in the mixing of Saginaw Lobe deposits with Erie Lobe deposits. However, the majority of the sediment in the Eel River paleo channel near SC0802 is Erie Lobe in origin. Based on the provenance and depositional sequence at SC0802, the Saginaw Lobe disintegrated prior to the Erie Lobe retreat from the Wabash moraine around 16-17 cal ka.

Twelve Days of Hell: A Study of Violence, Historical Memory, and Media Coverage of the York, Pennsylvania Race Riots, 1968-2003

Morrow, Stephanie Leigh January 2016 (has links)
Race riots have struck America’s cities large and small for more than a century, and the media have retold these brutal events for American audiences. The 1960s, in particular, endured years of violent rioting due to social and economic inequalities between whites and blacks, and many of these riots have received ample coverage from the media and academic scholars. However, a lesser-known riot that destroyed homes, devastated businesses, and took the lives of two individuals was the 1969 York, Pennsylvania race riots. Similar to more well-known riots, such as the 1965 Watts riot and the 1967 Detroit riot, the racial violence in York was the result of decades of inequalities and frustrations between blacks and whites. What sets this riot apart is that two murders that occurred over those twelve deadly days in 1969 would go unsolved for more than thirty years. The killing of a twenty-seven-year-old black woman, Lillie Belle Allen, and a twenty-two-year-old white rookie police officer, Henry C. Schaad, were not resolved until their killers were brought to justice in 2002 and 2003, respectively. This dissertation explores the development of journalistic approaches to covering race relations in the United States. The methods employed to cover the 1969 York race riots and subsequent murder trials differ greatly from those more recent racial protests today. First, an examination of coverage from 1968 and 1969 reveals how the newspaper and television news media dictated public opinion of these violent events and established the foundation for a historical narrative. Then, the study fast-forwards thirty years to when the local York media commemorated the thirty-year anniversary of the riots in 1999. Although the local media briefly revisited the story of the 1969 York riots after they transpired, this local story came back unexpectedly in full force in 1999. However, the local audience was not ready to remember those events. These commemorations not only broke the silence of many York citizens, but also magnified the inequalities and social issues facing York in the present while also instigating the reopening of the Allen and Schaad murder cases in 2000. In addition, the mayor of York, Charles Robertson, was arrested in 2001 for the murder of Allen, bringing the newsworthiness of this story to another level. Mayor Robertson’s involvement in the story suppressed the larger social issues that led to the riots and, instead, over-simplified the story as one, racist villain who instigated the violence. By examining the local, regional, and national media coverage of these events, I argue that the narratives used personified, dramatic style to express competing accounts of what caused the York race riots and the personas of the characters involved, as well as the larger issues or race relations and race reconciliation. By emphasizing the role of the news media as storytellers, this dissertation determines that the journalists created new, dramatic, and sometimes misleading, narratives that retold the story of the 1969 York race riots in the present. / Media & Communication

Cinéma d'auteur et doublage : le paradoxe Woody Allen / Cinéma d’auteur and Dubbing : The Woody Allen Paradox

Brisset, Frédérique 27 November 2012 (has links)
Dubbing is the most common AVT technique in France but few scientific studies have beenconducted on the subject, due to everal factors: the difficulty in understanding oral speech, the cultural devaluation of a mode of translation initiated by the American studios to target the masses or the impossibility of assigning an author to a collective production.Nonetheless, a Cinéma d’auteur exists, far from Hollywood studios, and thus quite rare inthe American film system. Woody Allen, an American director independent from theMajors, is a unique example: he has been able to preserve his artistic autonomy while using international distribution channels. They have brought him a real fame in France, thanks tosubtitled and dubbed versions of his films. Cinéma d’auteur and dubbing can however beregarded as an antinomy as the former is supposed to address an elite and the latter isontologically tied to mass media. The « Frenchification » of Allen’s films lies at the veryheart of that paradox and demands a balance between two poles, one leading towards theauthor’s speech, and the other towards the facilitation of the spectator’s work. This dissertation seeks to understand how dubbing has negotiated the contradictions at the veryheart of this situation, and what room is ascribed to the author in the dubbed versions, between the Model Author and Addressee as defined by the reception theories. Based onexamples taken from nine of Allen’s comedies over a 30-year period, this descriptive diachronic and comparative study contrasts the original versions of the films with their translations in French editions and their dubbed versions, using Berman’s theory of « deforming tendancies ».

Who is J.W.T. Allen?

Wilkening, Friederike 09 August 2012 (has links) (PDF)
At a first glance it may seem strange that a man who probably was the European scholar of Swahili with the longest association with the Swahili Coast should have had so little impact on the field of Swahili studies, at least regarding his reception in the literature of the discipline. Obviously there must be something marginal to his position in the academic world of both his and our days, which appears to draw mainly from two factors. On the one hand, John Allen spent most of his professional life `on location`in the Swahili sphere and some other parts of the Muslim world, but hardly ever was present in Europe and its academic institutions or publications so that he was simply physically outside the central circles of scholarly discourse. On the other hand, his main interest was a subject rather marginal within European Swahili studies, dealing with the traditional literature, moreover in a philological approach. Alien`s love of literature was also an important impetus for his long involvement in language development - especially as he regarded it in the first place in terms of art and only secondly in terms of `information´ about cultural or historical matters. As a promoter of Swahili literature, especially in connection with the East Aftican Swahili Committee, he probably got more widely known than for his contributions to research. However, this practical dimension of Allen`s work can not be separated from his studies in literature, and the mutuality of the two fields of activity is to be shown in this article which can hardly more than touch upon central aspects of his work and its significance for the discipline.

We will examine how Woody Allen "writes" the History of the United States during the interwar period in some of his works, starting with his personal education as an American Jew and artist concerned about the question of the Jewish identity. We will present the main features of his cinematographic language, that is, using satire and ironic language in order to discuss with the audience. We will provide a synthesis of Allen's official biografy, as well as a presentation of his public image, charting a parallelism among these elements and some episodes from his autobiografical movie Radio Days (1987). The relation between History and Cinema will be highlighted too, starting with the concept of the "Movie maker - historian", as defined by the theorist Robert A. Rosenstone, looking for its exemplification in Woody Allen's works. We will analyze Zelig (1983) as a case of study, a fake documentary that reflects on the History of the Jews in America. We will also examine irony as a language, in the light of the Jewish tradition of humor and of Hayden White's historical theory of fiction. Under these premises, we will analyze The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985), which shows in its background the United States during the Great Depression, and Midnight in Paris (2011), which provides a critique to the glorification of past times. In all these movies, chosen for dealing with the interwar period and for using irony as a language, we will examine historical aspects and contributions to the Jewish identity in Allen's production.
