An Analysis and Production Book for a Staging of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam

Prior, James L. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem which concerns this thesis is the directing, designing, and mounting of Woody Allen's Play It Again, Sam under the auspices of the 1974 North Texas State University Summer Repertory Theatre Company. Chapter I contains a detailed examination of the playscript, an analysis of each of the characters, and criticism of Woody Allen's work. Chapter II deals with the chief problems and strategies involved in production. The preparation of the playscript, the cast and production staff, the design process, the front-of-house activities, and rehearsal experience are discussed in detail. Chapter III is the production book itself and includes the script, the blocking, and the light and sound cues. Chapter IV contains a critical summary of the project and recommendations for future study.

The study here developed allowed us to establish, creatively, a possibility of understanding the history of Western culture. Add philosophy and cinema was a way of thinking about the current conditions of human subjectivity islanded this condition called "individual," their ways of relating to the real currency of their experiences. The film is as tool in this search, as philosophy is. The film witnesses the relationship "individual-modernity." Nietzsche is a thinker who gave us the tools to think about the individual s relationship with nihilism and the tragic in some of the characters of Allen and Scorsese films. O cinema é tão ferramenta, nessa pesquisa, quanto a filosofia o é. O cinema testemunha a relação indivíduomodernidade .

L'oracle en son jardin : William Carlos Williams et Allen Ginsberg / The oracle in the garden : William Carlos Williams & Allen Ginsberg

Aublet, Anna 27 October 2018 (has links)
The tensions analyzed by Leo Marx in his 1964 essay The Machine in the Garden: Technology and the pastoral ideal in America, between the American Arcadia as a land of original purity and the trope of industrial threat is ghostly present throughout the works of both poets at stake in this dissertation: William Carlos Williams (1883-1963) and Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997). In this research I intend to analyze the processes by which the poets manage to claim ownership of their land in spite of the lurking mechanic apocalypse. Writing, each in his own time, both poets endeavor to reclaim the original historical and spatial meaning of their continent, by devising an autochthonous language that would provide a new “point of view” and a new “point of voice”, as means to prophesy a collective future for the nation from their personal “local” anchorage in their natal New Jersey. Striving to “make a start out of particulars” they intend to escape the vastness of the continent by focusing on the minute details surrounding them in their own garden state. The correspondence between the two poets also questions the periodization of literary movements, too often conceived as a series of breaks and schisms. The Garden State, metamorphic space covered with the remnants of industrialization provides us with a way to break free from the shackles of such categorization : from modernism to the Beat Generation.

Contribution à l'étude de l'exploitation des données temporelles en présence d'imperfections / Contribution to the Study of Temporal Data Exploitation in the Presence of Imperfections

Gammoudi, Aymen 17 June 2017 (has links)
This work focuses on the exploitation of temporal data in presence of imperfections. The aim is to define, design and develop an intelligent system for the interrogation of temporal databases where the time dimension (of relationships or entities) is defined in an imprecise and fuzzy way. This type of databases is frequently found in applications from the medical field, history and archive, planning, etc.We first recall the different formalisms used in the processing of temporal in formation, and then we present the previous work which has addressed the problem of managing and processing of imperfect temporal information in the field of databases. We describe then a first contribution related to the definition of a new model for the representation of imprecise temporal data. Extended Allen relations have been introduced as well as a set of composition rules for reasoning. This contribution has allowed developing a first prototype called Fuzz-TIME for processing queries containing fuzzy /imprecise time criteria. One of the major interests of this system is that it exhibits a reasoning module to intelligently process a family of temporal queries of a complex nature. Most work on the exploitation and manipulation of temporal in formation considers that the temporal entities (i.e.,intervals) are defined in a precise (non-fuzzy) manner. ln the world of real applications, the bounds of the manipulated time intervals are often pervaded by imprecision. We have proposed a new semantics of Allen's temporal relations (i .e., Allen Tolerant Relations) in this context. The key element of this semantics is a suitably chosen relationship of tolerance. A third part of our work is devoted to the modeling of a new extension of Allen's temporal relations where the time intervals are interpreted in a conjunctive way. Finally, we describe the architecture of the Fuzz-TIME system and discuss the experimental study carried out to validate the proposed contributions.

Managing wetlands : a community perspective

Sunday, Jenny M. 04 May 2013 (has links)
Increased residential and commercial development threatens wetland functions, particularly near urban centers. This research explores the values and attitudes of residents concerning wetlands, wetland restoration, and development near Fort Wayne and Huntington, Indiana, the location of a large wetland restoration project. Key Informant interviews were conducted to contextualize issues on wetlands, stormwater management, development, and community involvement. Interviews results were used to generate a random sample, multi-county mail survey. Results show that residents find protecting groundwater, green space, and access to clean drinking water very important. Environmental concern is high regarding flooding, development, and water quality. KI’s underestimate resident’s awareness of water quality issues. A proposed model of significant factors in explaining resident’s attitudes towards wetlands includes whether or not they are a farmer, wetland knowledge, well-being, and positive attitudes towards green space and development. This research is unique because the respondents have exposure to wetland areas on a regular basis. Wetlands are highly appreciated and are an important part of the community. There is a fine balance of property rights and pro-conservation attitudes among residents. Future research can explore whatconservation specifically means to people and how their views on property rights shape that meaning. Results from this research can aid management decisions that can be either beneficial or detrimental to the wetland and those who depend on it for a variety of needs. / Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management

Vislumbres estéticos e mergulhos poéticos em On the Road e Howl: uma viagem histórico-literária por Jack Kerouac e Allen Ginsberg / Aesthetical glimpses and poetical plunges in On the Road and Howl: a historical-literary trip through Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg

No. of bitstreams: 1 Samir_Carvalho2017.pdf: 1168334 bytes, checksum: c557cbab9c0e473faea9ae923a224291 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-03-20 / The objective of this work is to analyze the aesthetic ideals of two writers of the Beat Generation: Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. With such an objective in mind, their two main works, On the Road and Howl, respectively, were studied comparatively. Through this study, we tried to delineate the interpretation that each author gives to these ideals they share, showing the divergences of understanding and materialization of such ideals in these two works. Besides, there is a historical trajectory. Firstly, building a strong base for the work, we analyze the historical period in America during the moment of formation of the generation. The historical focus then shifts to the private lives of each author, their cultural and linguistic influences, their intellectual itineraries. From that knowledge, it is also possible to understand the process of formation of the ideals themselves, central theme of this dissertation. We also tried to show how the next generations got hold of the ideals studied here, how the readers interpreted those artistic works in an individual way. From that, the authors’ reaction to this reinterpretation is reflected upon. In other words, this work is a deep survey of the aesthetic ideals of two artists, their formation and perpetuation. The main documents and texts used in the development of the analysis described above were: private journals to trace in time the transition of thoughts on their own artistic practices, letters exchanged between the two artists to demonstrate how their thoughts communicated and diverged in certain aspects, articles from newspapers and magazines to show the reception they had at the time and what others thought of the texts we studied, and biographies to base the text with history fundamentals.

Who is J.W.T. Allen?

Wilkening, Friederike 09 August 2012 (has links)
At a first glance it may seem strange that a man who probably was the European scholar of Swahili with the longest association with the Swahili Coast should have had so little impact on the field of Swahili studies, at least regarding his reception in the literature of the discipline. Obviously there must be something marginal to his position in the academic world of both his and our days, which appears to draw mainly from two factors. On the one hand, John Allen spent most of his professional life `on location`in the Swahili sphere and some other parts of the Muslim world, but hardly ever was present in Europe and its academic institutions or publications so that he was simply physically outside the central circles of scholarly discourse. On the other hand, his main interest was a subject rather marginal within European Swahili studies, dealing with the traditional literature, moreover in a philological approach. Alien`s love of literature was also an important impetus for his long involvement in language development - especially as he regarded it in the first place in terms of art and only secondly in terms of `information´ about cultural or historical matters. As a promoter of Swahili literature, especially in connection with the East Aftican Swahili Committee, he probably got more widely known than for his contributions to research. However, this practical dimension of Allen`s work can not be separated from his studies in literature, and the mutuality of the two fields of activity is to be shown in this article which can hardly more than touch upon central aspects of his work and its significance for the discipline.

Beat poetry and the twentieth century, Allen Ginsberg / Haidee Kotze

Kotze, Haidee January 1999 (has links)
This dissertation investigates Allen Ginsberg's Beat poetry within the framework of twentieth-century literary developments, from modernism to postmodernism. It is argued that Beat writing is founded on a rejection of the detached, intellectual and formal nature of the high modernism which came to be institutionalised in the American literary practice of the 1950s. Beat poetry rejects this tradition in favour of an eclectic assemblage of ideas which may, either through direct influence or through parallel development, be linked to certain avant-garde modernist movements. All of these movements share assumptions which support and echo the personal and spiritual vision of Beat aesthetics, as well as its formal experimentation. This eclectic assemblage also involves the assimilation of the ideas of modernist movements often held to be in conflict, embodying opposing strains of modernism. This dynamic is illustrated by analysing the influence of two such opposing modernist influences on Ginsberg's Beat poetry, namely imagism and surrealism. Finally, it is argued that this double gesture of a rejection of the institutionalised form of high modernism and a simultaneous re-assessment of the avant-garde constitutes a crucial step in the development towards postmodernism. Together with the surfacing of postmodernist characteristics in Ginsberg's Beat poetry, this forms the basis for the conclusion that Ginsberg's Beat poetry may be regarded as playing a transitional and initiating role in the literary evolution from modernism to postmodernism. / Thesis (MA)--PU for CHE, 1999.
