Från herreman till sockenmålare. : En manlighetsstudie av C. J. L. Almqvists Målaren / From Gentleman to Parish Painter. : A Masculinity Study of C. J. L. Almqvist’s Målaren.

Sjöstrand, Oskar January 2015 (has links)
This essay investigates how masculinity is constructed in the short story Målaren (The painter), written by C. J. L. Almqvist. The tools used in the analysis were, first, R. W. Connells theory about there being multiple forms of masculinity represented in society simultaneously, within a hierarchical masculinity-system. Second, the concepts that were used in Sweden, in the 19th century, to describe the concept of the male, have been utilised. More specifically, the concept of a person’s character and the genre “rådgivningshandbok” have been used.        When analysing from a character-conceptual perspective/the perspective of a person having good or bad character, the results show that it is mostly the inner qualities, that is, in this specific text, qualities such as playfulness, imagination, and creativity, as well as good work moral, vigour, and heartiness, that are advocated. The main character, Elias, has a rich inner life, on the whole, with religious features as well.  This essay also presents a reading of Målaren which shows that the short story is a developed variant of the genre “advice manual” which was popular in the first half of the 19th century. The development consists of Almqvist seemingly having taken a step beyond/away from the condemning of those men who yielded to temptation, since he concentrates on the journey back to a virtuous life, rather than making the crime itself the main focus of the story.      Connell’s idea concerning a hierarchical system of masculinity has helped me with mapping the regional, Swedish, as well as the local, parish-based hegemonic masculinity which can be found in Målaren. Among other things, the analysis undertaken with Connell’s idea as support shows that the regional hegemony is strongly characterised by the system and culture of states that existed in Sweden until it was dissolved in 1866. It has also become evident that many of the characters in Målaren in spite of the fact that Elias unquestionably has a rich inner life and that the concept of a person’s character is a central aspect of the ideal masculinity, seem to be judged with respect to which social state or class they belong to. This fact indicates that the regional hegemonic masculinity permeates and affects the local, although some clashes have been demonstrated.

Boktryckaren på Visingsö : en granskning av Sven Almqvists forskning om Johann Kankel / The book printer on the island of Visingsö : a study of Sven Almqvist’s research on Johann Kankel

Hedfeldt, Göran January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to examine Sven Almqvist’s research on the 17th century book printer Johann Kankel who was employed by count Per Brahe the younger on the island of Visingsö. A model to describe the communications circuit, constructed by book historians Thomas R. Adams and Nicolas Barker are used as well as the historical source criticism method. This model consists of the five phases: publication, manufacture, distribution, reception and survival. All of these phases are influenced by external forces such as commercial pressures or social behaviour and taste. It is not only Almqvist’s study that is being examined. This thesis discusses also the primary sources and publications preceding of Almqvist’s study. Since Almqvist’s publication of 1965 is the latest contribution to information about Johann Kankel it is an important task to evaluate his study and to shed light upon possible new fields of research about the printing office of Visingsö. Furthermore the conditions of 17th century Sweden are briefly described, such as the four estates, gothicismus, censorship and publishing. Almqvist used mainly primary sources when describing life and work of book printer Kankel. The result of his study hasn’t therefore been greatly influenced by previous publications. In a few isolated cases the lack of primary sources permits free scope for speculation. Distribution, reception and survival as described by Adams & Barker are the most neglected phases in Almqvist’s study. These overlooked areas are therefore possible new research topics. / Uppsatsnivå: D

"Försonarn vid sitt bröst, en stjernkrönt Qvinna" : jungfru- och moderstematiken hos C.J.L. Almqvist och P.D.A. Atterbom

Persson, Anders January 1998 (has links)
The present Ph.D. dissertation proceeds from poetry on the theme of the Virgin Mary which blossomed for several decades during the Romantic era and is dedicated to the use of its virgin and maternal themes in the work of C.J.L. Almqvist and P.D.A. Atterbom. The first chapter discusses Almqvist's description of the perfect complementary unity of male and female - and divine and human - in his juvenile work Murnis (1819). In this sexually explicit work, theology and religious experience is eroticized while sexuality is sacralized. In Amorina (1822), a burgeoning transformation of Almqvist's "wholeness" vision can be observed. While wholeness can only be achieved through the perfect union of man and woman in Murnis, Amorina emerges as a perfect figure in and of herself. In the second chapter, the figure of Tintomara in Drottningens juvelsmycke (1835) is analyzed. In this novel, the dream of the merging of "twoness" into "oneness" seems to have been abandoned in favour of an experiment, wherein the unity of masculinity and femininity is realized in one single individual, the androgynous Tintomara. Despite the fact that the novel's androgynous idea is formulated with direct reference to Plato's Symposium, the significance of Jakob Böhme's speculations on androgyny are also emphasized here. The third chapter deals with the poetry about Mary written by Almqvist, especially Isidoros av Tadmor and Marjam (1839). Almqvist's image of Mary is characterized in terms of "perfection" and "complexity". In Marjam, this complexity is expressed both through the drama's upholding of the paradoxical content of the dogma of the Virgin Mary and the main theme of the double drama, the tension between the earthly and the eschatological family. The fourth and fifth chapters of this dissertation are dedicated to the maternal theme in the work of P.D.A. Atterbom. I proceed from the hypothesis that the transformations which the figure of Mary undergoes reflect a tension between Romantic syncretism and classic Christianity. I analyze four texts by Atterbom in which this conflict is particularly apparent. In Atterbom's prose draft for his fairy play Fågel blå (1818), as in his sonnets dedicated to Mary (1817-18), I discern a shift away from Romantic syncretism and toward more Biblical patterns. In the fairy play Lycksalighetens ö (1824-27), this tension emerges anew in the two Nyx epiphanies in the piece. The elegy "Ave Maria" (1831) comprises the clearest example of the shift in Atterbom's writing toward classical Mariology. In the conclusion, Almqvist's and Atterbom's respective thematic use of Mary - where she is portrayed as a complex, transgressive figure - is contrasted with an early example of Swedish Biedermeier poetry, Carl von Zeipel's "Jesus Christus. Evangeliska romanser" (1822), where Mary is placed in the context of the little, idyllic family. / digitalisering@umu

Landskapet och människan : Hur Ester Almqvist gestaltade landskapet, människan och deras relation

Axelsson, Anna January 2023 (has links)
Ester Almqvist lived between 1868 and 1934. She was one of the most eminent Swedish landscape painters in the early 20th century. This essay analyses Esters portraying of the landscape, the people and the relation between each other. The analysis is made with Erwin Panofsky's iconographic method viewed from a feminist point of view. Ester Almqvist displayed the landscape as spirited, where the human is part of the landscape. The human is a working human which is part in a bigger context where the human has a value only by existing regardless of gender, age, looks and attributes.

“Vita främlingar antagligen vara gudar..!” : - En kvalitativ text- och bildanalys av Barna Hedenhös upptäcker Amerika ur ett postkolonialt perspektiv

Kihlström, Marina, Mäki, Amanda January 2022 (has links)

Kärlekens skugg-gömma : om det queera begäret i Maria Gripes skuggromaner / The Shadowed Mirror of Desire : queer desires in Maria Gripe's shadow-novels

Torefeldt, Stina January 2018 (has links)
Maria Gripe’s shadow-series consists of four novels written in the 1980s and feature a character who present themselves as both as a girl and a boy. Carolin, also known as Carl has got a mysterious and captivating aura that leaves everybody fascinated and most people enamoured with him/her. Carolin shares many similarities with the 19th century author Carl Jonas Love Almqvist’s character Tintomara from the novel The Queen’s Tiara (Drottningens juvelsmycke). This essay examines the desire that is aimed at Carolin and explores the queer situations that arises as consequences of his/her cross dressing. I comparatively analyse the desire expressed in the shadow-series and The Queen’s Tiara to find similarities in who is affected by it and where the queer situations occur. The damaging effect of the desire is explored as well. The essay concludes that while most situations can be viewed as both heterosexual and homosexual Gripe uses genres and metaphors that amplify the queerness. Both Carolin and Tintomara are greatly affected by the desire toward them and get hurt because of it. Gripe and Almqvists charismatic androgynous characters bring desire and despair wherever they go, at least as long as they do not conform to society’s norm of gender dichotomy.
