Understanding Entrepreneurial Leadership that supports local entrepreneurshipCalatrava Castagnetti, Ruperto Andrés, Coti Zelati, Alberto January 2018 (has links)
Leadership and entrepreneurship have often been associated to the ability of guiding ventures, but less to the ability of leading a startup community. This master’s thesis examines literature on entrepreneurship, in particular Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (EE), to understand the role of leadership in sustaining a startup community. Although Stam’s (2015) EE framework recognizes that leadership enables entrepreneurship, it doesn’t define its characteristics and therefore, a more theoretical understanding is demanded. We have thus developed a conceptual framework that aims to facilitate empirical explorations and future analyses of the leadership dimension of Stam’s (2015) EE framework. Our conceptual framework of Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) includes the following characteristics: collective and bottom-up approach, presence of formal and informal leaders, promotion of social proximity and mentorship driven leadership. The use of interviews as research method and our EL conceptual framework as analytical tool was useful to explore and understand the current state of EL in the startup communities of Amsterdam and Utrecht. On the one hand, the startup community of Amsterdam experiences a shared leadership where formal and informal leaders are recognized. Moreover, the strong presence of supporting organizations, networks of mentors and entrepreneurial events favour interaction among the stakeholders of the EE. On the other hand, Utrecht, a smaller and younger startup community, lacks success entrepreneurial stories that results in supporting organizations exercising the leadership role. Furthermore, there is a poor presence of entrepreneurial events and networks of entrepreneurs that lead to an unconnected community.

Unwelcome: a study on the Employees´ Perspective on Sex Trafficking in the Hotel industry in AmsterdamRossi, Eleonora January 2021 (has links)
Sex trafficking is a form of modern slavery which includes the sexual exploitation of individuals for personal gain. It currently affects 4 million people globally, and around 9 thousand in Europe. Although it affects individuals of all genders, races and sexual orientations, women and young girls have been recognised as the most vulnerable segment, accounting for 72% of victims in Europe. Along these lines, the majority of suspected and convicted sex traffickers in Europe are male individuals. It has been described as a discrete and subtle crime, hidden in plain sight, affecting every facet of society. In the tourism industry, the most affected segment is the hotel sector, which possesses some characteristics which act as enablers of sex trafficking. However, previous research has failed to properly identify such characteristics. In fact, sex trafficking is generally a highly neglected topic in research. To fill the current research gap, the thesis aimed at identifying, from employees´ perspective, the factors of the hotel industry which act as sex trafficking enablers in Amsterdam. The latter was chosen as focus area mainly because of its legislate on on prostitution, which was legalised in 1999. Previous research has recognised such legalisation as a challenge for institutions fighting sex trafficking, and various authors have recognised the importance of scientific research to solve the issue in the area. Through 15 individual interviews and two online questionnaires, this thesis identified 15 factors which act as crime enablers in the hotel industry in Amsterdam. They have been divided into macro, meso or micro level, depending on their nature. Among the main findings there are: the impact of current legislations, the police, hospitability and transiency, training and ease of access. These findings stand out because redeemed as having the most potential in contributing to fighting the issue, if properly taken into consideration. They summarize the need for a proper support system designed by the police and the government, which takes into consideration hospitability and transiency as characteristics of the hotel industry exploited by sex traffickers and takes a closer look at hotels with inappropriate training and ease of access to the hotel rooms, as these might be more susceptible to sex trafficking. The thesis is descriptive in nature; thus, it does not aim at finding solutions to the findings. The thesis concludes by giving suggestions of further research, such as adopting a strategic approach to find solutions to the identified factors.

Gutzkows Novelle Der Sadduzäer von Amsterdam Verglichen mit Seinem Drama Uriel Acosta, und Eine Englische Übersetzung der NovelleKitteleson, Clarice Solberg 01 January 1974 (has links)
The same theme of one unorthodox man opposing a self-appointed authoritative religious institution is interpreted is interpreted in two different ways in two related works by Karl Friedrich Gutzkow: his Novelle, Der Sadduzaer von Amsterdam (1834), and in his drama, Uriel Acosta (1846). Both works fictionalize the life Uriel Acosta (1585-1640), an unorthodox Jew who fled the Spanish Inquisition in Portugal to the relatively tolerant country of Holland. Acosta’s problems were not with the government of Holland, however, but with his own orthodox Jewish temple authorities. He opposed the written interpretations of the Talmud and attempted to question the very idea of institutionalized religion as a mere human invention. For this skepticism he was excommunicated and persecuted. Eventually he took his own life, leaving behind his autobiography, A Specimen of Human Life, which Gutzkow read.
This thesis attempts to define the likenesses as well as the contrasts in Gutzkow’s two interpretations. The twelve year span elapsing between the two works effects changes in the author’s use of characterization and in his resolution of the plot. The method of investigation used was to analyze each work for plot, form, and content; the latter included style and characterization. Materials used were simply the two works themselves as well as supplementary reading regarding developments in the author’s life during the years between the writing of the Novelle and the drama.

From New Netherland to New York: European Geopolitics and the transformation of social and political space in colonial New York CityLegrid, John Allen 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the ways in which the core-periphery relationships of English and Dutch colonial ventures in North America were impacted by local events in New Amsterdam-New York, a Dutch colony that was lost to the English following the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1664. Increased peripheralization of New Amsterdam-New York negated centralizing efforts of the Dutch and effectively ended the potential for Dutch geopolitical power in North America. While the Atlantic World has traditionally been understood as a framework for understanding international phenomenon and global processes, this thesis suggests that it was impacted by multiple geopolitical scales simultaneously. Placing New Amsterdam-New York’s colonial history in a framework of evolving core-periphery relationships and highlighting the central role of local social, political, and spatial processes provides a foundation for understanding the outbreak of ethnic hostilities in the late 1680s. I argue that the increasing importance of the local is demonstrated by the attention given to social, political, and spatial ordinances that sought not to control “the English” or “the Dutch”, but to control the actions and actors of individual streets, wards, and districts.

“Here it is, you can experience it, you can ride around” : Bicycle study tours as experiential education / "Här är det, du kan uppleva det, du kan åka omkring" : Cykelstudieturer som erfarenhetsbaserad utbildningBracic, Blanka January 2017 (has links)
In a time of growing awareness of the climate change crisis, cities are revisiting their policies and practices to align with sustainability aspirations. Transportation and cycling policies offer a way forward. On visits to best practice cities, policymakers, practitioners and decision-makers learn from local experts in an effort to take ideas home and implement them. The activity of finding out about policies, known as policy transfer, can be explored as a type of experiential learning when it takes place as a bicycle study tour. The policy transfer framework provided by Dolowitz & Marsh (1996, 2000, 2012) and the experiential learning theory of Kolb (2015) can serve as starting points in exploring how policies are transferred during learning activities and interpersonal interactions that involve hosts and visitors during bicycle study tours. The case study of Amsterdam, which has over 500km of separate cycle lanes and 53% of all daily trips made by bicycle (van der Horst, 2014), offers a working, observable example of an alternative future for cities wanting to change their transportation situation. More than 150 groups visit the city annually to find out about its bicycle culture and underlying policies (Sargentini, 2017). While policy transfer and learning in Amsterdam may be initiated by visitors that take steps to travel to the city, the local hosting situation is made up of different institutions and actors that interact in various ways. Some attention to the governance of urban cycling in Amsterdam to understand the role of the private sector and the responsibilities of different organizations and actors can partially respond to Oldenziel’s (2016) call for research on this topic throughout Europe. Interviews and document research about the hosting situation in Amsterdam reveal several players with varied backgrounds, a rich variety of learning activities, and a loosely governed hosting landscape. Recommendations are made for Amsterdam institutions, hosts, visitors and future research.

A Study on the Implementation and Effect of the Common European Asylum System in the European UnionRicht, Victoria January 2006 (has links)
The aim of this study is to investigate the development of the Common European Asylum System which was called for at the Tampere European Council in 1999. The intention was to harmonize the legal standards of asylum seekers and refugees and coordinating the policies Thus, with this study I want to give an account as to what has happened so far and what effect this might have had on asylum seekers in the Member States of the European Union. This is done through an interdisciplinary approach by looking at the developments in the legal section as to what laws have been passed and implemented so far but also with a questionnaire sent to organizations working in connection to European Council for Refugees and Exiles aiming to understand their perception of the harmonization process. Further, I present statistics and diagrams taken from statistic publications of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in order to illustrate patterns in the history of migration as to trends and patterns. The main idea of the harmonization process is that all Member States should treat asylum applications in a similar way. However at present there still seems to be major differences in the numbers of applications, the recognition rates and what status granted between the Member States of the European Union. The Dublin Regulation is perceived as an unjust tool against the asylum seekers since states have differences in the recognition and statuses. The Member States of the European Union still have a very long way to go in this harmonization process to claim equal treatment of asylum seekers.

Translation and validation of the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) into Hausa languageDagona, Sabo S., Archibong, Uduak E., McClelland, Gabrielle T. 13 February 2019 (has links)
Yes / Objectives: The objectives of this study ware to translate and validate the Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scale into Nigerian Hausa Language to be used in assessing Hausa speaking surgical patients’ preoperative anxiety before undergoing elective surgery. Methods: Forward and backward translation method was adopted to translate APAIS into Hausa Language so as to produce a Hausa version of the scale (APAIS-H). The Hausa version was tested on thirty patients scheduled for elective surgery at Federal Medical Centre, Nguru-Yobe State, Nigeria. The authors performed factor analysis, internal consistency and correlated the translated Hausa version with Spielberger’s State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-State). Findings: The translated Hausa version of the scale produced high internal consistency for the two subscales (Cronbach’s alpha 0.82 for anxiety related to surgery subscale and 0.71 for information desire subscale respectively). APAIS-H correlated well with Spielberger's state Trait Anxiety Inventory STAI-state with a correlation coefficient of (r = 0.81), Conclusion: APAIS-H has been found to be valid and reliable instrument to be used in the assessment of preoperative anxiety in Hausa speaking patients scheduled to undergo surgical operation.
