[en] LLUMINANCE MEASUREMENT BY MOBILE DEVICES: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT PLATFORMS AND APPLICATIONS / [pt] MEDIÇÃO DE ILUMINÂNCIA POR DISPOSITIVOS MÓVEIS: UMA ANÁLISE COMPARATIVA DE DIFERENTES PLATAFORMAS E APLICATIVOS

VIVIANE GODINHO VAZ 31 January 2019 (has links)
[en] The illuminance of the environment has a physiological, emotional and productivity impact, depending on the activities that individuals are performing. International technical standards, such as ISO 8995-1: 2002 (CIE S 008 / E: 2001), also adopted in Brazil by ABNT, present requirements for the levels of illuminance existing in indoor environments in order to guarantee safety, comfort and efficiency in visual tasks throughout a work period. Measuring instruments such as luxmeters, are not used in everyday life. However, the possibility that the existing sensors in mobile devices can perform these measurements of illuminance will make its application viable in the daily life of the user, allowing to evaluate the adequacy of this greatness during his daily activities. Preliminary results available in the literature, comparing the performance of mobile devices associated with different applications in relation to the measurement results provided by a luxmeter, point to the inadequacy of the response of the mobile devices. On the other hand, it is possible that the use of a diffuser dome coupled to the mobile device may impact its performance to enable the application in the illuminance measurement. Thus, in this work are carried out studies to analyze the reliability of the illuminance values obtained by sensors already existing in smartphones and tablets, using or not a dome diffuser. The measurements were made using as reference, a digital luxmeter, and a set of mobile or tablet devices associated with different applications, in situations with and without diffuser dome attached. Two experimental arrangements were developed: one for measurements using a LED lamp, and another assembly using a xenon lamp. With the comparative analysis, the impact of the use of the diffusion dome was evidenced. The attachment of the dome enabled some of the device/application combinations to achieve adequate performance for application in the daily assessment of illuminance.

Keep your screen happy: Improving the usability of screen time tracking apps

Pacherazova, Milena January 2019 (has links)
The adoption of technology in our daily activities increased the time that we spend in front of the screen and changed the way we communicate and work. In recent years, many big companies started to develop and implement screen time management tools in their products to educate the user on how to improve their digital health. Those tools are an important step in the process, they bring awareness and help the users to change their habits. Several studies have focused on screen time tracking apps but not from the design perspective. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore the design of screen time management apps by developing two prototypes, which were used to evaluate different design elements and features. The results of this thesis present a guideline on how to improve the design of the existing screen time tracking tools and what additional features could be added to fulfil their aim and encourage users to change their behaviour.

Fysisk aktivitet och sociala medier : - En deskriptiv enkätundersökning på vuxna kvinnor 18-60 år / Physical activity and social media : - A descriptive survey of adult women aged 18-60

Brännström Gullehag, Elin, Stiglund, Maria January 2019 (has links)
Background: One of the primary functions of the human body is to be physically active and this is essential throughout life. Adults over 18 years of age are recommended to achieve at least 150 minutes of physical activity per week with moderate intensity spread throughout the week. Physical activity reduces the risk of premature death and cardiovascular diseases. Health-inspiring apps can improve lifestyle habits such as diet and physical activity and thus prevent diseases. Social media is a collective name for communication platforms. A connection between the use of social media and a deteriorated self-image and body image has been found.   Purpose: The purpose of the study was to give an insight into how physical activity in adult women in the age group 18-60 years is influenced by the use of social media and health-inspired apps, and how social media affects self-image and body image in younger and older women. Participants: The participants were 165 women in the ages 18 to 60 years. The younger age group (18-30 years) included 114 participants. There were 19 participants in the age group 31-40 years and 32 participants in the age group 41-60 years. Method: A digitized questionnaire was designed to answer questions about background information, use of social media, physical activity, body image and self-image. Result: The study's results show that 95% of the women were physically active and 33% of these were active 4-6 hours per week. The study has shown little awareness regarding how social media can be applied to physical activity in women 18-60 years. Younger women use social media to a greater extent and experienced poorer body image and self-image compared to older women Conclusion: The study has answered the purpose that the use of social media and apps promote physical activity in women and that there is a difference in the use of social media, comparison and self-image between the age group 18-30 and 31-60.

Apprendendo: um aplicativo para dispositivos móveis de apoio aos processos de ensino e aprendizagem / Apprendendo: an application for mobile devices to support teaching and learning processes

Menezes Júnior, Jorge Alberto Messa 06 October 2016 (has links)
The present research, developed in the Professional Master’s Program in Network Educational Technologies (PPGTER) of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), deals with the development of an application, APPrendendo, which aims to instigate the greater use of the Educational Tablet resource, received by teachers of public high schools through the governmental action called Digital Education – a policy for interactive computers and tablets in their pedagogical practice in classroom. Based on the concept of questions and answers, the application allows teachers to propose challenges to their students in the form of multiple choice questions. In the elaboration of the questions, its functionalities stimulate teachers to use all the resources available in the tablet, such as camera, microphone and Internet access, contributing to their sensitization to the device. The research method used was hypothetico-deductive from the hypothesis of the low use of tablets due to the need of specific applications for the demands of the teachers. By using procedures from action research, the data were obtained through three data collections. Two of them as mixed questionnaires, applied at the beginning and at the end of the research, in which teachers of high schools of Alegrete RS were able to assess their relationship with the Educational Tablet resource before and after the research. Regarding the development of the application, the Web Engineering methodology and the Hybrid Development approach were used. Furthermore, through workshops attended by teachers, the third instrument of data collection, we observed, collected and recorded the requirements for the construction of the research product, APPrendendo application. Through the analysis and comparison of the data collected during the research, we found that the teachers considered the application as a methodological resource capable of being used as a potential tool to promote the use of Educational Tablets. Thus, we concluded that the creation of a specific application for Educational Tablets can contribute to its greater use in classroom by teachers, provided that the application developed is useful and consonant with the reality of teaching, that which during its entire development process the participation of future users is encouraged, and also that the tool exploits all the available resources offering new possibilities for teaching practice.

Towards a unified fraud management and digital forensic framework for mobile applications

Bopape, Rudy Katlego 06 1900 (has links)
Historically, progress in technology development has continually created new opportunities for criminal activities which, in turn, have triggered the need for the development of new security-sensitive systems. Organisations are now adopting mobile technologies for numerous applications to capitalise on the mobile revolution. They are now able to increase their operational efficiency as well as responsiveness and competitiveness and, most importantly, can now meet new, growing customers’ demands. However, although mobile technologies and applications present many new opportunities, they also present challenges. Threats to mobile phone applications are always on the rise and, therefore, compel organisations to invest money and time, among other technical controls, in an attempt to protect them from incurring losses. The computerisation of core activities (such as mobile banking in the banking industry, for example) has effectively exposed organisations to a host of complex fraud challenges that they have to deal with in addition to their core business of providing services to their end consumers. Fraudsters are able to use mobile devices to remotely access enterprise applications and subsequently perform fraudulent transactions. When this occurs, it is important to effectively investigate and manage the cause and findings, as well as to prevent any future similar attacks. Unfortunately, clients and consumers of these organisations are often ignorant of the risks to their assets and the consequences of the compromises that might occur. Organisations are therefore obliged, at least, to put in place measures that will not only minimise fraud but also be capable of detecting and preventing further similar incidents. The goal of this research was to develop a unified fraud management and digital forensic framework to improve the security of Information Technology (IT) processes and operations in organisations that make available mobile phone applications to their clients for business purposes. The research was motivated not only by the increasing reliance of organisations on mobile applications to service their customers but also by the fact that digital forensics and fraud management are often considered to be separate entities at an organisational level. This study proposes a unified approach to fraud management and digital forensic analysis to simultaneously manage and investigate fraud that occurs through the use of mobile phone applications. The unified Fraud Management and Digital Forensic (FMDF) framework is designed to (a) determine the suspicious degree of fraudulent transactions and (b) at the same time, to feed into a process that facilitates the investigation of incidents. A survey was conducted with subject matter experts in the banking environment. Data was generated through a participatory self-administered online questionnaire. Collected data was then presented, analysed and interpreted quantitatively and qualitatively. The study found that there was a general understanding of the common fraud management methodologies and approaches throughout the banking industry and the use thereof. However, while many of the respondents indicated that fraud detection was an integral part of their processes, they take a rather reactive approach when it comes to fraud management and digital forensics. Part of the reason for the reactive approach is that many investigations are conducted in silos, with no central knowledge repository where previous cases can be retrieved for comparative purposes. Therefore, confidentiality, integrity and availability of data are critical for continued business operations. To mitigate the pending risks, the study proposed a new way of thinking that combines both components of fraud management and digital forensics for an optimised approach to managing security in mobile applications. The research concluded that the unified FMDF approach was considered to be helpful and valuable to professionals who participated in the survey. Although the case study focused on the banking industry, the study appears to be instrumental in informing other types of organisations that make available the use of mobile applications for their clients in fraud risk awareness and risk management in general. / Computing / M.
