Measuring the electric field of picosecond to nanosecond pulses with high spectral resolution and high temporal resolution

We demonstrate four experimentally simple methods for measuring very complex ultrashort light pulses. Although each method is comprised of only a few optical elements, they permit the measurement of extremely complex pulses with time-bandwidth products greater than 65,000. First, we demonstrate an extremely simple frequency-resolved-optical gating (GRENOUILLE) device for measuring the intensity and phase of pulses up to ~20ps in length. In order to achieve the required high spectral resolution and large temporal range, it uses a few-cm-thick second harmonic-generation crystal in the shape of a pentagon. This has the additional advantage of reducing the device's total number of components to three. Secondly, we introduce a variation of spectral interferometry (SI) using a virtually imaged phased array and grating spectrometer for measuring long complex ultrashort pulses up to 80 ps in length. Next, we introduce a SI technique for measuring the complete intensity and phase of relatively long and very complex ultrashort pulses. It involves making multiple measurements using SI (in its SEA TADPOLE variation) at numerous delays, measuring many temporal pulselets within the pulse, and concatenating the resulting pulselets. Its spectral resolution is the inverse delay range--many times higher than that of the spectrometer used. The waveforms were measured with ~ fs temporal resolution over a temporal range of ~ns and had time-bandwidth products exceeding 65,000, which to our knowledge is the largest time-bandwidth product ever measured with ~fs temporal resolution. Finally, we demonstrate a single-shot measurement technique that temporally interleaves hundreds of measurements with ~fs temporal resolution. It is another variation of SI for measuring the complete intensity and phase of relatively long and complex ultrashort pulses in a single shot. It uses a grating to introduce a transverse time delay into a reference pulse which gates the unknown pulse by interfering it at the image plane of an imaging spectrometer. It provided ~125 fs temporal resolution and a temporal range of 70 ps using a low-resolution spectrometer.

A CMOS analog pulse compressor with a low-power analog-to-digital converter for MIMO radar applications

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars, which utilize multiple transmitters and receivers to send and receive independent waveforms, have been actively investigated as a next generation radar technology inspired by MIMO techniques in communication theory. Complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology offers an opportunity for dramatic cost and size reduction for a MIMO array. However, the resulting formidable signal processing burden has not been addressed properly and remains a challenge. On the other hand, from a block-level point of view, an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is required for mixed-signal processing to convert analog signals to digital signals, but an ADC occupies a significant portion of a system's budget. Therefore, improvement of an ADC will greatly enhance various trade-offs. This research presents an alternative and viable approach for a MIMO array from a system architecture point of view, and also develops circuit level improvement techniques for an ADC. This dissertation presents a fully-integrated analog pulse compressor (APC) based on an analog matched filter in a mixed signal domain as a key block for the waveform diversity MIMO radar. The performance gain of the proposed system is mathematically presented, and the proposed system is successfully implemented and demonstrated from the block level to the system level using various waveforms. Various figures of merit are proposed to aid system evaluations. This dissertation also presents a low-power ADC based on an asynchronous sample-and-hold multiplying SAR (ASHMSAR) with an enhanced input range dynamic comparator as a key element of a future system. Overall, with the new ADC, a high level of system performance without severe penalty on power consumption is expected. The research in this dissertation provides low-cost and low-power MIMO solutions for a future system by addressing both system issues and circuit issues comprehensively.

La détention à des fins d'enquête en droit criminel canadien et son impact sur les droits constitutionnels

Le pouvoir de détenir une personne à des fins d'enquête n'est pas une technique d'investigation nouvelle et tire son origine du droit anglais. Mais cette méthode d'enquête, qui consiste à restreindre temporairement la liberté de mouvement d'une personne que l'on soupçonne pour des motifs raisonnables d'être impliquée dans une activité criminelle, ne fut reconnue officiellement au Canada qu'en juillet 2004 suite au jugement rendu par la Cour suprême dans l'affaire R. c. Mann. Au moment d'écrire ces lignes, cette stratégie d'enquête policière ne fait toujours pas l'objet d'une réglementation spécifique au Code criminel. L'approbation de cette technique d'enquête, en l'absence de toute forme de législation, ne s'est pas faite sans critiques de la part des auteurs et des commentateurs judiciaires qui y voient une intrusion dans un champ de compétences normalement réservé au Parlement. L'arrêt Mann laisse également en suspens une question cruciale qui se rapporte directement aux droits constitutionnels des citoyens faisant l'objet d'une détention semblable: il s'agit du droit d'avoir recours sans délai à l'assistance d'un avocat. Le présent travail se veut donc une étude approfondie du concept de la détention à des fins d'enquête en droit criminel canadien et de son impact sur les droits constitutionnels dont bénéficient les citoyens de notre pays. Pour accomplir cette tâche, l'auteur propose une analyse de la question en trois chapitres distincts. Dans le premier chapitre, l'auteur se penche sur le rôle et les fonctions dévolus aux agents de la paix qui exécutent leur mission à l'intérieur d'une société libre et démocratique comme celle qui prévaut au Canada. Cette étude permettra au lecteur de mieux connaître les principaux acteurs qui assurent le maintien de l'ordre sur le territoire québécois, les crimes qu'ils sont le plus souvent appelés à combattre ainsi que les méthodes d'enquête qu'ils emploient pour les réprimer. Le deuxième chapitre est entièrement dédié au concept de la détention à des fins d'enquête en droit criminel canadien. En plus de l'arrêt R. c. Mann qui fera l'objet d'une étude détaillée, plusieurs autres sujets en lien avec cette notion seront abordés. Des thèmes tels que la notion de «détention» au sens des articles 9 et 10b) de la Charte canadienne des droits et libertés, la différence entre la détention à des fins d'enquête et l'arrestation, les motifs pouvant légalement justifier une intervention policière de même que les limites et l'entendue de la détention d'une personne pour fins d'enquête, seront aussi analysés. Au troisième chapitre, l'auteur se consacre à la question du droit d'avoir recours sans délai à l'assistance d'un avocat (et d'être informé de ce droit) ainsi que du droit de garder le silence dans des circonstances permettant aux agents de la paix de détenir une personne à des fins d'enquête. Faisant l'analogie avec d'autres jugements rendus par nos tribunaux, l'auteur suggère quelques pistes de solutions susceptibles de combler les lacunes qui auront été préalablement identifiées dans les arrêts Mann et Clayton. / The power to detain a person for investigative purposes is not a new technique of investigation and has its origin in English law. But this method of investigation, which is to temporarily restrict freedom of movement of a person suspected on reasonable grounds to be involved in criminal activity, was officially recognized in Canada in July 2004, following the judgement by the Supreme Court in the case of R. c. Mann. At the time of this writing, this strategy of investigation is not subject to specific regulations to the Criminal Code. The approval of this investigative technique, in the absence of any form of legislation, has not been without criticism from writers and commentators who see it as judicial intrusion into a field of expertise normally reserved for Parliament. The judgement of Mann also leaves open a critical issue that relates directly to the constitutional rights of citizens subjected to a similar kind of detention, namely the right to obtain immediately the assistance of a lawyer. This work is a thorough study of the concept of investigative detention in Canadian criminal law and its impact on the constitutional rights enjoyed by all citizens of our country. To accomplish this task, the author suggests studying this issue in three separate chapters. In the first chapter, the author focuses on the role and functions vested in the peace officers who carry out their mission within a free and democratic society such as the one which prevails in Canada. This study will allow the reader to better understand the main actors responsible for maintaining law and order in Quebec, the crimes they are most often called upon to fight and investigative methods they use to repress those crimes. The second chapter is dedicated to the concept of investigative detention in the context of Canadian criminal law. In addition to the case of R. c. Mann, which will be a study in detail, several other topics related to this concept will he discussed. Themes such as the notion of «detention» within the meaning of Sections 9 and 10b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the difference between the investigative detention and the arrest, the motives which can legally justify a police intervention as well as the limits of the detention of a person for purposes of investigation, will also he analyzed.. The third chapter is devoted to the question of the right to communicate immediately with a lawyer (and to he informed of that right) and the right to remain silent in circumstances enabling peace officers to detain a person for investigative purposes. In making a comparison with other judgments rendered by our courts, the author suggest some possible solutions that could fill gaps that have been previously identified by the Supreme Court in the cases R. c. Mann and R. c. Clayton.

Intermittency of Global Solar Radiation over Reunion island : Daily Mapping Prediction Model and Multifractal Parameters / Intermittence du rayonnement solaire global sur l'île de la Réunion : modèle de prévision journalière et paramètres multifractaux

Les îles tropicales sont soumises à un ennuagement hétérogène et changeant rapidement. Par ailleurs, elles ont une ressource solaire importante mais significativement variable d’un jour à l’autre. Dans le sud-ouest de l’océan indien (SWIO), La Réunion fait partie de ces îles tropicales ayant un potentiel solaire colossal mais fortement intermittent. Dans cette étude, nous proposons une nouvelle approche de prévision déterministe des cartes journalières rayonnement solaire (SSR), basée sur quatre modèles de régression linéaire : une régression linéaire multiple (MLR), une régression en composantes principales (PCR), une régression des moindres carrés (PLSR) et une régression pas à pas (stepwise--SR). Ces quatre régressions sont appliquées sur les données satellites SARAH-E (CM SAF) à 5km de résolution entre 2007 et 2016, en vue d’en effectuer la prévision. Pour obtenir de meilleures performances, nous proposons d'inclure les paramètres multi-fractale (H,C_1 et α) comme nouveaux paramètres prédictifs. Ceux-ci sont obtenus à partir de l'analyse de l'intermittence du SSR basée sur la méthode d’analyse d’ordre spectral arbitraire de Hilbert. Cette analyse qui est une extension de la transformation d’Hilbert Huang (HHT) est utilisée afin d’estimer l’exposant d’échelle ξ(q). On effectue la combinaison d’une décomposition en mode empirique et de l’analyse spectrale de Hilbert (EMD + HSA). Dans une première étape, l’analyse multi-fractale est appliquée sur une mesure du SSR d'une seconde échelle à partir d'un pyranomètre SPN1 à Moufia en 2016. La moyenne infra journalière, journalière et saisonnière de la structure multi-fractale a été dérivée, et la loi d’échelle d’exposants ξ(q) a été analysée. Dans une seconde partie, l’analyse de l’intermittence est effectuée sur les mesures du SSR, d'une période d’une minute, à partir le réseau de SPN1 contenant 11 stations en 2014. Les modèles spatiaux pour toutes les stations avec les paramètres multi-fractales H,C_1 et α sont mis en évidence. La variabilité de la largeur du spectre de singularité est considérée pour étudier l'intermittence spatiale et la multi-fractalité dans l'échelle quotidienne et l'échelle saisonnière. Sur la base de ces analyses d'intermittence faites sur les mesures de plusieurs stations, les paramètres multi-fractaux universels (H,C_1 et α) pourraient être choisis comme de nouveaux prédicteurs afin d’indiquer les propriétés multi-fractales du SSR. / Due to the heterogeneous and rapidly-changing cloudiness, tropical islands, such as Reunion Island in the South-west Indian Ocean (SWIO), have significant solar resource that is highly variable from day-to-day. In this study, we propose a new approach for deterministic prediction of daily surface solar radiation (SSR) maps based on four linear regression models: multiple linear regression (MLR), principal component regression (PCR), partial least squares regression (PLSR), and stepwise regression (SR), that we have applied on the SARAH-E@5km satellite data (CM SAF) for the period during 2007-2016. To improve the accuracy of prediction, the multifractal parameters (H,C_1 and α) are proposed to include as new predictors in the predictive model. These parameters are obtained from the analysis of SSR intermittency based on arbitrary order Hilbert spectral analysis. This analysis is the extension of Hilbert Huang Transform (HHT) and it is used to estimate the generalized scaling exponent ξ(q). It is the combination of the Empirical Mode Decomposition and Hilbert spectral analysis (EMD+HSA). In a first step, the multifractal analysis is applied onto one-second SSR measurements form a SPN1 pyranometer in Moufia in 2016. The mean sub-daily, daily and seasonal daily multifractal patterns are derived, and the scaling exponent ξ(q) is analyzed. In a second step, the intermittency study is conducted on one-minute SSR measurements from a SPN1 network with 11 stations in 2014. The spatial patterns for all the stations with the multifractal parameters H,C_1 and α are shown. The variability of singularity spectrum width is considered to study the spatial intermittency at the daily and seasonal scale. Based on this intermittency analysis from measurements at several stations, the universal multifractal parameters (H,C_1 and α) could be taken as new predictors for indicating the multifractal properties of SSR.

Os corpos dispersos são descritos por meio de um método do tipo front-tracking que produz interfaces de espessura zero através de malhas formadas pela união de elementos adjacentes em ambas as fases e de técnicas de refinamento adaptativo. Condições de contorno periódicas são implementadas de modo variacionalmente consistente para todos os campos envolvidos nas simulações apresentadas e uma versão modificada do campo de pressão é adicionada à formulação do tipo um-fluido usada na equação da quantidade de movimento linear. Simulações numéricas diretas em três dimensões são executadas para diferentes configurações de líquidos imiscí veis compatíveis com resultados experimentais encontrados na literatura. Análises da hidrodinâmica do jato transversal de gotas nessas configurações considerando trajetórias, variação de formato de gota, espectro de pequenas perturbações, além de aspectos complementares relativos à qualidade de malha são apresentados e discutidos. / A two-phase flow computational code taking a hybrid Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian desciption of movement along with the Finite Element Method is used to simulate the dynamics of an incompressible drop jet in crossflow in the primary breakup zone. Dispersed entities are described by means of a front-tracking method which produces zero-thickness interfaces through contiguous element meshing and adaptive refinement techniques. Periodic boundary conditions are implemented in a variationally consistent way for all the scalar fields involved in the presented simulations and amodified version of the pressure field is added to the one-fluid formulation employed in the momentum equation. Three-dimensional direct numerical simulations for different flow configurations of immiscible liquids pertinent to experimental results found in literature. Analyses of the hydrodynamics of the drop jet in crossflow in these configurations considering trajectories, drop shape variations, spectrum of small disturbances, besides additional aspects relating to mesh quality are presented and discussed.

The empirical researches laid the foundations for a theoretical analysis on Stimulus Control and discrimination learning by children about two-yearsold. Each of the four empirical reports have adjusted procedures for teaching discrimination, which have produced: 1) simple discrimination learning by children from 10- to 20-months-old; 2) simple discrimination and discrimination reversal learning by toddlers aged 15- to 23-months; 3) rapid listener behavior learning by a toddler aged 17- to 22-months; 4) identity conditional discrimination learning by seven toddlers aged 14- to 27-months and generalization from object-object relation with an abstract stimulus pair to the photo-object and video-object relations by a toddler aged 27- to 29-months. Based on the experimental data, the processes probably involved in the rapid discrimination learning by toddlers in their everyday interactions were brought out. Concerning vocabulary acquisition, responding by exclusion and ostensive learning were emphasized. Regarding concept formation, the processes of generalization between similar stimuli and equivalence class formation between dissimilar stimuli were addressed. The challenges in defining appropriated experimental procedures for investigating discrimination acquisition by toddlers in translational research were discussed. Additionally, we were concerned on the homology between the learning processes involved in the phenomena observed in everyday interactions of toddlers with their verbal community and the learning processes involved in the experimental procedures. / O trabalho de tese consta de uma análise da literatura sobre Controle de Estímulos e aprendizagem de discriminações por crianças em torno de dois anos de idade e dos procedimentos e resultados de quatro relatos de pesquisa experimental que foram discutidos à luz da literatura. Os relatos foram redigidos na forma de artigos e foram submetidos para publicação em periódicos especializados. Os quatro experimentos ajustaram procedimentos de ensino de discriminações que produziram: 1) aprendizagem de discriminações simples por bebês entre 10 e 20 meses de idade; 2) aprendizagem de discriminações simples e reversões das discriminações simples por bebês entre 15 e 23 meses de idade; 3) aprendizagem rápida de comportamento de ouvinte por um bebê entre 17 e 22 meses de idade; 4) aprendizagem de discriminações condicionais por identidade por sete bebês entre 14 e 27 meses; a demonstração de generalização da relação objeto-objeto com um par de estímulos abstratos para a relação foto-objeto e vídeo-objeto por um bebê entre 27 e 29 meses de idade. Face aos dados, destacaram-se os processos possivelmente envolvidos no ambiente natural dos bebês e que propiciam a aprendizagem rápida de discriminações: em relação à aquisição de vocabulário, enfatizaram-se o responder por exclusão e a aprendizagem ostensiva; na formação de conceitos, ressaltaram-se os processos de generalização entre estímulos similares e processos de formação de classes de estímulos equivalentes, que incluem estímulos dissimilares. Foram discutidos os desafios encontrados para a definição de procedimentos experimentais apropriados para a investigação da aquisição de discriminações por bebês na pesquisa translacional, discutindo-se a homologia dos processos de aprendizagem possivelmente envolvidos nos fenômenos observados no cotidiano de interações dos bebês e aqueles propostos no ambiente experimental.

Projection based Variational Multiscale Methods for Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations to Model Turbulent Flows in Time-dependent Domains

Numerical solution of differential equations having multitude of scales in the solution field is one of the most challenging research areas, but highly demanded in scientific and industrial applications. One of the natural approaches for handling such problems is to separate the scales and approximate the solution of the segregated scales with appropriate numerical method. Variational multiscale method (VMS) is a predominant method in the paradigm of scale separation schemes. In our work we have used the VMS technique to develop a numerical scheme for computations of turbulent flows in time-dependent domains. VMS allows separation of the entire range of scales in the flow field into two or three groups, thereby enabling a different numerical treatment for the different groups. In the context of computational fluid dynamics(CFD), VMS is a significant new improvement over the classical large eddy simulation (LES). VMS does away with the commutation errors arising due to filtering in LES. Further, in a three-scale VMS approach the model for the subgrid scale can be contained to only a part of the resolved scales instead of effecting the entire range of resolved scales. The projection based VMS scheme that we have developed gives a robust and efficient method for solving problems of turbulent fluid flows in deforming domains, governed by incompressible Navier {Stokes equations. In addition to the existing challenges due to turbulence, the computational complexity of the problem increases further when the considered domain is time-dependent. In this work, we have used an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) based VMS scheme to account for the domain deformation. In the proposed scheme, the large scales are represented by an additional tensor valued space. The resolved large and small scales are computed in a single unified equation, and the effect of unresolved scales is confined only to the resolved small scales, by using a projection operator. The popular Smagorinsky eddy viscosity model is used to approximate the effects of unresolved scales. The used ALE approach consists of an elastic mesh update technique. Moreover, a computationally efficient scheme is obtained by the choice of orthogonal finite element basis function for the resolved large scales, which allows to reformulate the ALE-VMS system matrix into the standard form of the NSE system matrix. Thus, any existing Navier{Stokes solver can be utilized for this scheme, with modifications. Further, the stability and error estimates of the scheme using a linear model of the NSE are also derived. Finally, the proposed scheme has been validated by a number of numerical examples over a wide range of problems.
