Les Précieuses Ridiculisées

Smith, Roberta January 2019 (has links)
The essay opens with a historical framework in which are established the temporal limits and the causes of the precious movement in France in the seventeenth century. The latter are located in the political and social changes that followed the period of the Fronde and the establishment of the absolutist monarchy of Louis XIV. The second part, by reviewing the most popular satirists of the time, establishes the plausible sources of Molière's play and determines the political nature of satire. Then, our analysis highlights how the true targets of Molière are not the précieuses but the bourgeois who aspire to rise to the level of the aristocracy. The last part is a reflection on the model of feminism adopted by the author and its similarities with Miss de Scudéry.

When All Comes down to Clothes : An Interpretation of P.G. Wodehouse's The Inimitable Jeeves

Frööjd, Tobias January 2012 (has links)
Abstract My aim for this paper is to analyse the character Jeeves' obsession with perfect clothing in     P. G. Wodehouse's The Inimitable Jeeves (1923). My method has been to study the historical context of the British aristocracy at the time of the first publication of the book in 1923, as well as the previous four decades during which the author grew up and decisive changes in the British class society took place. This paper studies sources on the significance of clothing in general, and examines its importance at the time in particular. For my analysis I have borrowed elements from new historicism. The norms, traditions and values of the aristocracy lost in importance during this time, and the aristocracy was divided into individuals who were willing to adopt to these changes and others who fought to defy them. My conclusion is that Jeeves considers the strict dress codes to be an important symbol of the old aristocratic values that he has to defend, in order to legitimize his own position, as he is profoundly devoted to his calling of being a first class valet faithful to the old traditions. Wooster, then, acts as Jeeves' opponent on the matter as he embodies the part of the aristocracy willing to embrace the changes instead.

Décors des résidences seigneuriales en Viennois et Grésivaudan du XIIIe au XVIe siècle : étude archéologique, stylistique et historique / Decoration of seigniorial residence in Grésivaudan and Viennois regions during the 13th- the 16th Centuries for archeological, stylistic and historical study

Peerapornpisal, Supamon 04 September 2018 (has links)
There are nowadays many studies about aristocratic houses and their decoration. This study on decoration was achieved from the huge corpus of seignorial residences dated between the 13th and the 16th Centuries in the region of Viennois and Grésivaudan where a number of seignorial residences was found. Fifty-three selected sites gathered from a wide investigation were organized in two ways: firstly by documentary research in the archives, the libraries and the center of document resource, secondly by intervention in the studied area. This research focused on different categories of decoration: architectural, figurative, sculptural and painted decor. The research aims to establish the corpus of seigniorial residences which will enable it to study the entire decorative aspect of the selected sites. This will also allow for a new perspective of aristocratic house research. The castles and the fortified manor houses are known today as the existing aristocratic accommodation, which are in quite a large number and are unique in their architectural elements. The similarity of the two seignorial residences lies in their architectural characteristics. The quantity of them allows for an extension of the research framework for determining a sufficient number in terms of the studied sites. On the contrary, the difference of status between the castles and the fortified manor houses permits a comparison of their decorative aspects. Le Dauphiné has a great number of seignorial residences. The territory of Grésivaudan has been recognized for suitable settlement with fertile land in the mountains of Chartreuse and Belledonne. As for Viennois, this territory has a geographical variation which caused different characteristics of houses. Moreover, the history of Dauphiné presents a long period of independence with the succession of several Counts. The conquest policy was applied for defending the enemies in the surrounding areas and also for conquering more land. A great number of seignorial residences was included in this research. The study period from the 13th to the 16th Centuries is known as the transitional time from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the Renaissance, there were many changes in different domains. These changes reflect the evolution of the decoration of aristocratic houses. The study of decoration of the respective seignorial residences will enable us to learn about the characteristics of the architectural and figurative decoration. Understanding the architectural decor involves a study of the architectural elements: doors, windows, turrets, watch-turrets, brattices, arrow holes and chimneys. The figurative decoration means a study of figurative presentation. The elements concerned are painting motifs and mural painting, sculptural motifs and figures. Molding in architectural decor emphasizes the structure of decorative elements. The frames of the doors and windows can be noticed by volumetric and symmetrical effects which can be seen on the lintel and the lower part of the frames of the structure. The appearance of sculpted shields above the doors and windows help complete the decorative aspect of the elements. The chimney has the same decorative effect but the molded decor would be on the upper part and the corbel or side posts. As for the figurative decoration, the presence of different figures like trees, animals, men create an in-depth dimension and more narration or a narrative scene. The painting motifs and the mural painting form a narrative which show a series of pictures which tell the sequence of an event or several successive scenes. Besides, as the corpus of the research assembles a great number of several types of decoration dating from 13th to 16th Centuries, it consequently reflects a stylistic evolution of decorative elements...

Aristocratie et communautés religieuses aux marges septentrionales du royaume de France (fin IXe - début XIIe siècles) : le cas du diocèse de Noyon / Aristocracy and religious communities in Northern margins of kingdom of France (end of the 9th beginning of the 12th centuries). : the case of the diocese of Noyon

Chaffenet, Paul 16 June 2017 (has links)
In the north of the kingdom of France and more particularly in mediaeval Picardy, the history of the diocese of Noyon, apprehended from the point of view of the relations between aristocracy and religious communities from the end of the 9th to the beginning of the 12th centuries, reveals a relative documentary exception : in Vermandois as in Noyonnais, a certain profusion of sources (essentially diplomatic) allows a refined understanding of the place of the abbeys and chapters in manifestations of secular religious policies. The same sources require special but not exclusive attention to the policies of the counts and of the bishops in this area. However, for the whole period chosen, the latter were too often perceived as structured and linear blocks. It is necessary to overcome these impressions of homogeneity and immobility by showing the diversity and evolution of the reciprocal influences uniting on the one hand the religious communities, on the other hand the counts of Vermandois and the bishops of Noyon. While the churches of the studied diocese have been regarded as key places of expression of the fidelity of the second-rate aristocracy towards the high princely powers, we must also question the religious behavior of all the powerful (especially castellan) in order to show how they demonstrate individualized attitudes and contribute to drawing the contours of local authorities. In other words, the relations between aristocrats and religious communities, studied both in their material and spiritual aspects, are part of political societies polarized by the prince, whether the latter is bishop of Noyon, count of Vermandois or even castellan ?

Válka v myšlení a každodenním životě jihočeské nižší šlechty ve druhé polovině 16. a na počátku 17.století / War experience in everyday life of the south Bohemian lower noblemen in the period of the second half of the 16th century and the early 17th century

KOREŠ, František January 2013 (has links)
The author of the diploma thesis endeavoured, with the help of historic-anthropological methods, to depict a variety of forms of the war experience of the south Bohemian aristocracy in the period before the Battle of White Mountain. The subject of his interest focused on the fates of men and women of noble origin, on the background of three key military events of the second half of the 16th century and the early 17th century. Two expeditions of the Bohemian troops against the Turks in 1566 and 1594, and the invasion of Bohemia by the Passau army in 1611 had a very strong impact on the way south Bohemian knights thought, behaved and acted. Personal correspondence of selected aristocratic families served as the heuristic starting point in the search for the answer to the question which ways an aristocrat chose to defend values tested by centuries and to enforce his own or his family?s interests. The objective of the entire research was to amplify the knowledge about the history of lower aristocracy, by stressing the unique role of a historical participant in war. Treating the topic of war experience gave rise to a contribution on the borderline between the political, military, social and cultural areas of history of the early Modern Age.

Da Escola Técnica de Curitiba à Escola Técnica Federal do Paraná: projeto de formação de uma aristocracia do trabalho (1942-1963) / From Technical School of Curitiba to Federal Technical School of Paraná: project to formation of an aristocracy of labour (1942-1963)

Mario Lopes Amorim 17 December 2004 (has links)
This thesis have the objective of analyze the project of creation of the labour aristocracy based in the industrial teaching, by case study of the Escola Técnica de Curitiba, posteriorly Escola Técnica Federal do Paraná, between 1942 and 1963. On a first moment, making a succinct summary of the named institution when denominated Escola de Aprendizes Artífices do Paraná, seeing that the educational intention developed was destined to luckless, therefore reserved to the discipline the dangerous classes. But during the 1920 and 1930 decades, this intention was going modify, and in 1942 the idea of conformation of the labour aristocracy based in the industrial education was consolidated, with the Organizer Law of the Industrial Teaching. This elite must occupy functions in the manufacturing sector what demanding a superior qualification, accompanying the industrial development of Brazil, however dont being enough a better technical training, but was very much disciplined, in through of the educational process marked for intensive carriage of moral and civic contents, notedly during the Estado Novo (1937-1945), what a example for all the working class. The period after the Second World War was marked for the Cold War and to the growing influence of American way of life in Brazil. The presence of the Comissão Brasileiro-Americana de Educação Industrial (CBAI), a cooperation program signed between Brazilian and American governments in 1946, marked this moment in the industrial teaching of Brazil, through the adoption of systematical methods to the formation of instructors for this kind of teaching, based on Scientific Management. With the aim of to pep the instructors training, in 1957 CBAI created Centro de Pesquisas e Treinamento de Professores (CPTP), on the Escola Técnica de Curitiba, and your function was to prepare instructors to work on the Industrial and Technical Schools in Brazil, capacitating them to the assignment of to educate the labour aristocracy. In 1963 the accord between CBAI and the Brazilian government is not renovated, and the CPTP was closed your activities in 1964. The 3.552/59 Act determined a reform at the Industrial Teaching, fixing a unique course of First Level with propaedeutics finality to the technical courses of Second Level. The Guidelines and Basis Act of 1961 furthered the equivalency between Technical and Secondary Teaching. These modifications, linked with the new stage of industrialization and connected with the work markets demands, allied to the possible incoming of students go to College while graduate in high quality schools of Second Level, make changes in the profiles of students that searched the Industrial Teaching, which was occupied for students of midclass, invalidating the conception of conformation of the labour aristocracy originating exclusive of working class.

L’aristocratie laïque du Glamorgan et l’abbaye de Margam (1147-1283) / The lay aristocracy of Glamorgan and Margam Abbey (1147-1283)

Papin, Elodie 10 December 2016 (has links)
The process of Europeanization of aristocratic elites in Wales in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries is the starting point of this study. It aims at understanding the mechanisms underlying the reception of the Continental aristocratic culture by the local aristocracy as well as the selection and adaptation of some Welsh cultural elements by the Anglo-Norman aristocracy. In order to grasp these mechanisms, this study revolves around Margam Abbey. It is considered as a possible “meeting place”, inherent to the process of interculturation of the Anglo-Norman and Welsh aristocratic elites from the mid-twelfth century to the end of the thirteenth century. The written production of Margam Abbey, founded by the earl of Gloucester in 1147, gives a rich corpus to draw the portrait of the lay aristocracy in Glamorgan. The portrait made in this study is representative of a multifaceted lay aristocracy. In spite of a cultural and social heterogeneousness, the birth of a common class identity to the aristocratic elites draws. Obtaining a role of agents of transition and transformation, the Cistercians answered the spiritual needs of the Welsh and Anglo-Norman nobles, all seeking the Holy Virgin intercession in order to win their salvation. In order to prevent any claim to transfers of property, the monastery secured the transactions by different adaptations to the specific practices of the lay aristocracy of Glamorgan. This recognition of the aristocratic particularities did not avoid the breaking of conflicts, sometimes violent, often settled before the county court. This latter appears as a second “meeting place” of the process of interculturation. As “meeting place”, Margam Abbey contributed to the Europeanization impacted the lesser Welsh aristocracy in Glamorgan, who adapted to the Continental models. However, this concept presents some significant limits. The Europeanization of the native elites was not complete, because they kept their cultural inheritance. It does not also shed light on the reverse process. So, the adaptation and selection of Welsh cultural elements by the Anglo-Norman aristocracy highlight the process of interculturation of the aristocratic elites in Glamorgan.
