Experimentações institucionais no Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Barcelona (MACBA) / Institutional Experimentations in the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA)

Marziale, Nicole Palucci 27 September 2018 (has links)
This dissertation starts with the observation of experimental institutional practices that were concentrated mostly in Europe, since the nineties. These experimentations seeked intitutional restructuring, caring for the participation of the visitors, and also sought to oppose to the models based on entertainment and spetacle, in order to go against those premises, and having, as a reference, paradigmatic experimental exhibitions made since the sixties, as well as Institutional Critique practices of the same period. However, many of these experimental institutions faced problems in mantaining their activities, with cutbacks in financing and even, in some, cases, the closedown of their activities. In face of this scenario, we took as a case study the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, recognizing, in its history, a period notably marked by experimental propositions, under the direction of Manuel Borja-Villel, in order to trace the continuity, or not, of these kinds of propositions in the following directorships, from Bartomeu Mari (2008-2015) and Ferran Barenblitt (since 2015), as well as possible dificulties met in their mantainance ad developing. Furthermore, it is considered, on the onde hand, the possibility that specific leadership figures are crucial to the implementation and support of the experimental propositions before the many actors that coexist inside the institutional structures, like Board members and foundations. On the other hand, it is reckoned the role of these figures in making decisions inside the institution, in the face of which the director may have its autonomy limited

Miesto gyventojų požiūris į kultūros institucijų veiklą / The attitude of the inhabitants of the city towards the activities of culture and art institutions

Čepukienė, Danguolė 07 June 2005 (has links)
Nowadays Lithuanian society is dynamic and rapidly developing. Culture is like the system of values created by a human being. It integrates a public process of political, social, economical development and is able to accelerate social and economical development of the country. Institutions forming cultural processes find themselves in the crossing of the above-mentioned processes. The sociological survey on culture needs are needed not only to describe the state of culture but also to determine the changes, the tendency of public needs to be developed, the peculiarities of activities of culture institutions in the community of a city, useful contacts and culture perspectives. In improving the activities of culture institutions, it is very important to pay attention to a subjective aspect- the possibilities of human development. In order to determine the public needs for culture, the attitude towards the activities of culture and art institutions, the status of city culture, to determine the negative and positive evaluations of cultural activities, the research was implemented. During the survey, 200 inhabitants of Panevėžys City of 16-61 years old were interviewed. The hypothesis was raised- if the attention is paid to the opinion of inhabitants to the activities of culture and art institutions, the status of city culture, the peculiarities of activities of culture and art institutions in the community of the city, useful contacts and the perspectives of culture could be... The ideological changes of Lithuanian art discourse of the 1990s / Ideologiniai Lietuvos meno diskurso pokyčiai XX a. paskutiniajame dešimtmetyje

Citvarienė, Daiva 09 December 2008 (has links)
Dissertation thesis analyses the ideological processes of art discourse in the last decade of the 20th century – the formation and decline of different value related and ideological orientations, and their correlation, which makes an influence upon the changing conception of art and artist. These processes are analyzed referring to the reviews of the exhibitions of the discussed period, the exhibitions themselves, the declarations by the artists, who actively participated on the art scene, and their works, which were shaping the public art life. A separate attention is devoted to various layers of the artistic field – to the sociopolitical context, the works of art, the institutional exhibitions, and to the texts in cultural periodicals. The main aim of the thesis is to make a thorough analysis of the ideological and value related changes, which took place in the Lithuanian art discourse in the 1990s, and by underlining the artistic, institutional and sociopolitical contexts to reveal the changing content of symbolic constructions and their influence on the struggles for legitimization in the artistic field. The tasks of the research are: to define the role of the postsoviet intellectual (artist) in the Lithuanian art processes during the Rebirth period and in the years of independence; to explore the forms of politics of memory, which were established in the public discourse; to define the specificity of the concept of ideology in the postsoviet society; to analyze the... Feminist Interventions in Curatorial Practice at Appalachian University Art Institutions

Penven, Savannah Kate 23 May 2024 (has links)
This thesis addresses a gap in scholarship by centering curators at often-overlooked university art institutions in the Appalachian region in order to analyze the practical applications of feminist curatorial methodologies in comparison to established feminist curatorial scholarship Three case studies focus on the Reece Museum at Eastern Tennessee State University, the Art in the Libraries initiative at West Virginia University, and the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University. This study uses qualitative and anecdotal data collection methods, such as surveys and one-on-one interviews to demonstrate how feminist methodologies are employed as a theoretically informed curatorial practice, following the framework originally developed in feminist curatorial scholarship. An analysis of feminist curatorial scholarship reveals three core principles of feminist curating: institutional critique, collaboration and engagement, and inventive exhibition strategies. Data analysis found that staff at these three university institutions utilize various intersectional methodologies under the umbrella of feminist interventions when creating exhibitions in their respective institutions. The concept of "feminist curating," as understood and expressed by the staff, has evolved from traditional gender-centered approaches to address a broader scope of socio-economic inequalities as well as power dynamics within museums It is intended to serve as an entry point for further critique of self-described curatorial feminist methods and their practical implementations, in order to analyze what these strategies and practices look like, and how they are intended to affect the university community. / Master of Arts / This thesis explores the feminist practices of curatorial staff from three university art institutions in Appalachia: the Reece Museum at Eastern Tennessee State University, the Art in the Libraries initiative at West Virginia University, and the Eleanor D. Wilson Museum at Hollins University, and connects their work to the larger landscape of feminist curatorial scholarship. The self-described feminist interventions in these curatorial practices aim to disrupt power hierarchies present in museums and other exhibition spaces. A tradition of feminist curating initially served as a method for highlighting women artists and questioning the underlying societal systems that led to their exclusion from the art world, however, this thesis found that contemporary iterations of feminist curating now have an expanded focus to include other historically marginalized populations. Despite the change in scope, both contemporary and historic feminist curators utilize three primary feminist approaches that are common to a variety of curatorial methods: institutional critique, collaboration and engagement, and inventive exhibition strategies. These three methods are continued threads that link feminist curatorial methodologies over time and provide a basis for analyzing distinctions between traditional feminist curatorial methods, feminist curating in scholarship, and how feminist interventions are implemented in a practical sense at university institutions in the Appalachian region.

This thesis is a proposal for a sociological study of the artwork, placing them at the center of the analysis. From the concept of agenciamentos artísticos, the investigation will analyze the action that the artwork performs within the field of art. In methodological therms, it will be observerd how the art works operate artistic-discoursive practices when they appear as part of the art field. The idea that the criticism made by the artwork can be completely neutralized or commodified by institutions such as the museums or the art market will be called into question by the observation of how the artwork continues to act discursively within the field. For this purpose there were chosen eight artists whose production is known to be critical in the field of art. The goal will be to observe the action of the artworks when these participate in the legitimating institutions of the art field (biennials, art fairs, exhibitions). The artists chosen are Carla Zaccagnini, Lourival Cuquinha, Marcelo City, Yuri Firmeza, Artur Barrio, Paulo Bruscky, Antonio Manuel and Cildo Meireles. Are the aesthetic and discursive contents of the work of these artists - which generate conflicts or noise from inside of the art field and wider social field -, appeased when they get in contact with institutional or marketing art circuit? The analysis of the agenciamentos artísticos of the work of these eight artists will try to answer this question. The concept of artistic agency used in this study is based on agonistic democracy theory of Chantal Mouffe, more specifically in its formulation of the agonists artistic practices within the public sphere. Bourdieu's art field concept will also be used to support the theorization of the structural, symbolic, institutional and discursive enviroments where these works are constituted and in which they carry out their artistic and discursive performance.

Curatorial Intentions and Visitor Experience : Three case studies of publicly funded Konsthallar and how curatorial intentions affect the creation of social space

Wästfelt, Linnea January 2024 (has links)
Publicly funded art institutions in Sweden are tasked with the mission of making contemporary art available and accessible to the citizens. This thesis investigates three cases of publicly funded art institutions in Sweden, namely Göteborgs Konsthall, Malmö Konsthall and Liljevalchs Konsthall. The study examines the exhibitions presented by the institutions during the fall of 2023 and how they are curated to be inclusive or exclusive towards visitor groups. By using a model of curatorial values in conjunction with a constructed model of the exhibition as social space, inspired by Henri Lefebvre’s concept “social space”, this research will reveal different strategies used by the institutions for mediating curatorial intentions through the exhibitions.    Empirically the thesis is based on observations of three exhibitions and their visitors and interviews with exhibition hosts. The material is used to examine how the institutions work towards different audiences and how curatorial decisions influence visitor behaviour within the selected institutions.    The results show that the three cases differ in curatorial decisions and values. Further, the social space model used indicates that institutions differ in how they award agency to visitors. The analysis shows that visitors, by acting in unpredictable ways, contribute to the social space of exhibitions in ways not intended by the curator.     In conclusion, this study shows that the mission of the municipality-driven art institution is multifaceted and holds challenges when attempting to engage a broad audience while displaying exhibitions of high artistic integrity. The curatorial choices reflect in the audience and these choices therefore determine who will partake in the exhibition. The curator therefore plays a crucial role in how the exhibitions work with inclusivity.

Výtvarné umění jako nástroj české kulturní diplomacie / Fine Art as an instrument of Czech cultural diplomacy

Kottová, Kristýna January 2014 (has links)
For centuries, art has played an important role as a tool of cultural diplomacy and even now represents an integral part of foreign cultural policy of different countries. Modern and contemporary fine art often reflects the current social and political issues, at both national and international levels. This thesis aims to prove that art, as a means of expression, has its place in international relations, in the context of cultural diplomacy. The intention of this thesis is to explore the many ways that fine art is applied as an instrument of cultural diplomacy and how the use of visual arts contributes to positive relations between nations and to the process of building a positive image of the state abroad. In the context of Czech cultural-diplomatic practice, the art and its employment is analysed on two levels - historical, that examines the use of art in the process of building the Czechoslovak state, and institutional, that introduces both state and private actors, who contribute greatly to the cultural diplomacy of the Czech Republic via the promotion of Czech fine arts. The final chapter focuses on the environment of New York as a world cultural and art center, and engages in representative Czech projects, activities, organizations and individuals who are successful advocates of Czech visual arts in the international context. The main contribution of this thesis is its aim to address an uncommonly debated topic - a specific area of artistic creation, its role and position in international relations and cultural diplomacy of the Czech Republic.

Finding the Aesthetic in Visitor Experience : A study of strategies used by Moderna Museet and Bonniers Konsthall to understand the visitor experience within exhibitions

Shariq, Ifra January 2023 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of aesthetic experience of the audience within art exhibitions and its influence on their exhibition making and curatorial decisions of art institutions. This is done by comparing the practices within two case institutions located in Stockholm -Moderna Museet, a public art museum and Bonniers Konsthall, a private art institution. The research questions for this study are: What strategies do Moderna Museet and Bonnier Konsthall use to understand the aesthetic experience of their audience? Do the current visitor surveys used in these institutions capture the aesthetic aspect of the visitor experience? How does this knowledge about the aesthetic experience of the visitor influence the curatorial decisions within the two museums? The material consists of visitor survey questionnaires used in both the institutions as well as interviews that were conducted with staff members of the two institutions. The material is examined using the aesthetic experience theory, in order to focus specifically on the aesthetic aspect of the total visitor experience.  The thesis groups the different strategies used within the two institutions in two categories of formal and informal strategies, based on the formality of their conduction. It further compares the practices of the two institutions in order to examine the difference in the perspective of public and private art museums towards their visitors. By eventually tracing how knowledge collected by the formal and informal strategies reinforces each other, the thesis draws a more complete picture of the role the aesthetic experience of the visitor plays within art institutions and their art exhibitions.
