A Swat-Based Decision Support System for Multipurpose Reservoir Operation and Food-Water-Energy-Environment Trade-Off Analysis: Case Study of Selingue Reservoir

The world's water resources face unsustainable pressure from population growth, changes in consumption patterns, pollution, and overexploitation. Water resources managers have developed holistic approaches such as IWRM (Integrated Water Resources Management) and, more recently, the WEEF (Water-Energy-Environment-Food) nexus to address the situation. However, their application in day-to-day water resources management is still challenging due to the of little knowledge, data, and tools. One area where that challenge needs practical solutions is reservoir operation. The current study aims to improve the reservoir module in the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) so that operation rules that aim to meet various water, food, and electricity objectives can be simulated. The improved SWAT model is used to simulate the management of the Sélingué reservoir in Mali, West Africa. The reservoir operation was simulated under three different operation rules: 1) priority to monthly hydropower production (HPP) target (rule 1); 2) respect of predefined monthly target storage (rule 2); 3) priority to downstream environmental flow, irrigation, and municipal water demands (rule 3). Results show that when priority is given to the HPP target (rule 1), 98.3% of the electricity demand is met. At the same time, the dam can supply 81.72% of the water demand to maintain environmental flow and sustain irrigation and municipal water consumption. It also ensures water availability with an annual target storage deviation estimated at 1.8%. When rule 2 is implemented, a gap of 8.5% between electricity production and electricity demand is observed. Rule 2 also failed to sustain environmental flow and supply flow for irrigation and municipal consumption as a gap of 15.39% between the supply and the demand was observed. Similarly to rule 1, It ensures water availability with an annual target storage deviation estimated at 1.25%. When rule 3 is enforced (i.e., the priority is given to environmental flow, irrigation, and municipal water demands) the reservoir can maintain the environmental flow and maintain irrigation, and municipal water requirements with a gap of 17.7% between the supply and the demands. However, HPP production decreases with a gap of 12.56% between the electricity supply and demand. Its capacity to supply water in the long term is low as it has the highest target storage deviation with a value of 18%. These results indicate that rule 1 offers more guarantees considering the food and electricity security and environmental challenges. Note that the simulations are done assuming that these rules are systematically followed. In practice, decision-makers can deviate from a rule in exceptional circumstances to maximize benefits or avert unwanted consequences. Finally, a decision support system (DSS) was developed to assist decision-makers in selecting efficient reservoir operation policies for multipurpose reservoirs combining HPP and irrigation.

Data were collected through individual student and focus group interviews, self-assessment sheets, and teacher reflections. Formative assessment is a low stakes classroom assessment that is an assessment for learning. This study used a student response system to convey feedback from the formative assessment to both students and teacher during instruction. The student self-assessment sheet was implemented to provide a more dynamic level of feedback for students than what could be provided through the student response system alone

The subject of mathematics, based on my experience, is not something that students perceive as creative or exploratory. It seems to be common for teachers to struggle with implementing exploratory teaching methods. This study examines how teachers utilize realizations in various types of responses when students indicate, in some way, that they are not engaged in the mathematical discourse. The aim is to determine if this approach can enhance an investigative character in teaching. It is conducted using a modified version of the RTA tool and a modified version of Dimenäs' (1995) didactic response framework. A teacher's lessons have been transcribed, analyzed, and coded to identify correlations between response and realization. It was found that the teacher primarily exhibits a controlling character, and initially using multiple categories of realizations leads to a reduced need for categories in the teacher's response.

There is an abundance of ready-made tools for assessing the economic value of green infrastructure. Each with more or less unique design components and method approaches concerning quantifying and monetizing green infrastructure. Use of a single ready-made tool to support decisions and justify funding of inclusion of multifunctional green infrastructure in urban development may, due to different tools’ various designs and method approaches, risk excluding acknowledgement of relevant ecosystem services. This literature study embodies the logic of comparison by using content analysis method to explore possibilities of producing more comprehensive economic assessments of green infrastructure. This through contrasting content and design features of two such tools: Benefits Estimation Tool, and Green Infrastructure Valuation Toolkit. In addition, it analyses and discusses potential problems and opportunities that may arise when complementing tool A with methods or design features from tool B, and vice versa. Findings suggest that some few methods are similar enough not to constitute a complementary foundation between the tools, but that a combined use of some specific quantification and valuation methods may increase an assessments’ comprehensiveness. Findings also suggest that in combining the tools’ methods inaccuracy and uncertainty of an assessment are likely to increase. The study discusses tool-related problems regarding uncertainty, assessment of social benefits, and perception of value. It concludes that even though mutual complementarity is possible to achieve and in doing so more aspects of GI will be addressed, combining valuation tools in the pursuit of increased assessment comprehensiveness will likely generate problems in terms of assessment inaccuracy. The study may provide aid for developers of green infrastructure valuation tools and for practitioners conducting economic green infrastructure assessments or cost-benefit analyses. / Det finns en uppsjö färdigdesignade verktyg syftade till att bedöma det ekonomiska värdet av grön infrastruktur. Varje med mer eller mindre unika designkomponenter och metodsammansättningar gällande kvantifiering och värdeuppskattning av grön infrastruktur. Användandet av enbart ett sådant verktyg för att skapa beslutsgrund och rättfärdiga investering för multifunktionell grön infrastruktur i en stadsmiljö kan, på grund av olika verktygs varierande design och metodsammansättningar, riskera utesluta relevanta ekosystemtjänster. Den här litteraturstudien tar avstamp i en så kallad jämförande logik genom att använda den vetenskapliga metoden innehållsanalys för att undersöka möjligheterna att skapa mer omfattande ekonomisk bedömning av grön infrastruktur. Detta genom att kontrastera innehåll och design av två sådana verktyg: Benefits Esitmation Tool och Green Infrastructure Valuation Toolkit. Dessutom analyserar och diskuterar studien potentiella problem och möjligheter som kan uppstå när verktyg A kompletteras med metoder eller designkomponenter från verktyg B, eller vice versa. Undersökningsresultaten antyder att mellan de två verktygen är vissa metoder så lika att ingen komplimenterande grund kan utrönas, men att ett kombinerat användande av några specifika kvantifierings- och värdeuppskattningsmetoder kan öka omfattningen av en ekonomisk bedömning av grön infrastrukturs värde. Resultaten antyder också att genom att öka omfattningen av den sådan bedömning brister bedömningens precision och rimligen ökar även dess osäkerhet gällande uttryck av ekonomiskt värde. Studien diskuterar verktygsrelaterade problem gällande osäkerhet, bedömning av sociala fördelar, och förnimmelse av värde. Den drar slutsatsen att ömsesidig komplettering av verktygen och flertalet nya aspekter av grön infrastruktur till trots är det sannolikt att ett kompletterande av verktyg skapar problem gällande bedömningens precision. Studien kan bistå med hjälp till utvecklare av bedömningsverktyg för grön infrastruktur och för tjänstemän som genomför en ekonomisk bedömning eller lönsamhetsanalys av gröninfrastruktur.

DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOTYPE WATER SECURITY SELF-ASSESSMENT TOOL FOR RURAL, REMOTE, AND OTHERWISE MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES

<p>The majority of people in the world that lack access to sustainable water supplies reside in the rural regions of low- and middle-income countries. Lacking this access they depend on unprotected water sources that are contaminated from environmental factors and poor land-use practices. Access to safe water is a key determinant of public health, and hence rural, remote, and otherwise marginalized (RRM) communities suffer high rates of waterborne disease. The sustainability of water supply in RRM communities is influenced by the level of community participation as well as an holistic array of issues that correspond to the challenges faced by RRM communities.</p> <p>The purpose of this research is to develop a prototype computer-based tool to support RRM communities in an holistic water security self-assessment as a front-end to decision support. The aim of this assessment is to facilitate a systematic consideration of water security issues and to consolidate the results into key graphics that could help identify relative strengths and threats.</p> <p>First, a literature review was conducted on relevant water security indices, resulting in a water security framework and indicator database (n=285). Second, the Community Self-Water Assessment Tool (Community-SWAT) was developed. Third, Community-SWAT was beta-tested to demonstrate its ability to differentiate challenges between communities, identify water security challenges within a community, and visualize heterogeneity in water point security. A sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the majority of changes in that dimension’s scores were small (less than 5) when at least half of its questions were answered.</p> / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Holistic clinical assessment for undergraduate nursing students

A major focus in nursing education is on the judgement of clinical performance, and it is a complex process due to the diverse nature of nursing practice. Difficulties in the development of valid and reliable assessment measures in nursing competency continue to pose a challenge in nursing education. A holistic approach in the assessment of competency comprises knowledge, skills and professional attitudes, wherein the notion of competency incorporates professional judgement and management skills in the clinical situation. Therefore, the thesis aims to develop a holistic clinical assessment tool with a reasonable level of validity and reliability to meet the needs of clinical education. The conceptual framework underlying this research is formed by establishing a theoretical connection between the practice of learning, and of pedagogy and assessment. This research consists of five studies. In Study I, a systematic review was conducted to explore the current assessment practices and tools for nursing undergraduates. In Studies II, III and IV, a qualitative approach with focus group discussions was adopted to explore the views of final-year undergraduate nursing students, preceptors, clinical nurse leaders and academics on the clinical assessment. Based on the multiple perspectives, it therefore addresses concerns in clinical assessment. In Study V, a holistic clinical assessment tool was developed, for which a psychometric testing was conducted. The systematic review indicated that limited studies adequately evaluate the psychometric properties of the assessment instrument. The qualitative studies have raised an awareness of professional and educational issues in relation to clinical assessment. Workload, time, availability of resources, adequate preparation of preceptors, and availability of valid and reliable clinical assessment tools were deemed to influence the quality of students’ clinical learning and assessment. In addition, the presence of support systems and formal educational programs for preceptors influenced their preparation and self-confidence. Nursing leaderships in hospitals and educational institutions have a joint responsibility in shaping the holistic clinical learning environment and making holistic clinical assessment for students. The involvement of all stakeholders in the development of a valid and reliable assessment tool for clinical competency is also essential to the process. The Holistic Clinical Assessment Tool (HCAT) was developed by the author based on the systematic review, qualitative findings and the core competencies of registered nurse from the professional nursing boards. The HCAT consists of 4 domains and 36 assessment items. Furthermore, testing of the psychometric properties indicated that the HCAT has satisfactory content validity, construct validity, internal consistency and test-retest reliability. In conclusion, the HCAT is meritorious in that it carries the potential to be used as a valid measure to evaluate clinical competency in nursing students, and provide specific and ongoing feedback to enhance the students’ holistic clinical learning experience. The HCAT not only functions as a tool for self-reflection for the students, but also guides the preceptors in clinical teaching and assessment. In addition, the HCAT can be used for peer-assessment and feedback. It is imperative that the clinical and academic institutions establish various levels of ongoing support for both students and preceptors in the process of clinical assessment.

A critical review of the validity of the Credibility Assessment Tool (CAT) and its application to the screening of suspected malingering

Thesis (MOccTher)-- University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Malingering, the intentional simulation or exaggeration of symptoms for secondary gain, has a significant financial impact on disability insurance given its prevalence. Multidisciplinary professionals involved in disability determination therefore require a tool which would assist in the screening of suspected malingerers. AIM: The Credibility Assessment Tool (CAT), a tool which was developed as part of the Performance APGAR, was reviewed in terms of its validity and application to the screening of malingering. Research objectives included the review of face and content validity through a literature review and concept analysis, as well as the review of construct and concurrent validity by comparing the results with the operationalised malingering construct and available malingering protocols. The adapted Slick criteria as proposed by Aronoff, applicable to chronic pain, neurocognitive, neurological and psychiatric symptoms, was identified as the most suitable criterion standard for use of comparison. DESIGN: The research design was a descriptive analytical design, which was performed retrospectively with a report review from insurance referrals to the researcher. Informed consent was obtained from insurers who legally own the reports. A saturated sample of convenience of 184 cases with depression and pain as predominant symptoms were analysed. Recall bias were minimised through omission of personal identifiers and the use of a peer check of 20 random cases. Results in the peer check were suggestive of poor inter-rater reliability, rather than recall bias. METHOD: Cases were analysed according to the guidelines from the respective authors of the CAT and adapted Slick criteria, however this was further defined to ensure that the study could be replicated. RESULTS: Face validity was adequate in terms of purpose, item selection and association between consistency criteria, however require improvement in terms of standardised instruction and weighting of the scale. Content validity was rated as adequate to excellent, given that it supports criteria linked to the malingering construct. Construct validity was adequate as demonstrated by association between concepts obtained through concept analysis. Correlation between the CAT and adapted Slick was strong (r>0.5) however caution is expressed that this requires further research. CONCLUSION: Recommendations for further research included the review of content validity with subject experts, criterion and predictive valid through a case-control study of known-groups, as well as the reliability of the CAT, and the use of specialised ADL indices for malingering detection. Adaptation to the CAT was depicted in the proposed Consistency Assessment Tool. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Malingering, die opsetlike nabootsing of oordrywing van simptome vir sekondêre gewin, het ‘n beduidende finansiële impak op ongeskiktheidsversekering as gevolg van die prevalensie daarvan. Inhoudsgeldigheid was beduidend in vergelyking met die wetenskaplike literatuur en die geoperasionaliseerde konstrukte. Konstrukgeldigheid was bevestig deur die positiewe verhoudings tussen die aangepaste Slick en CAT kriteria. ‘n Sterk korrelasie was gevind tussen die aangepaste Slick en CAT, maar hierdie moet versigtig geinterpreteer word aangesien verdere navorsing verlang word. GEVOLGTREKKING: Aanbevelings vir verdere navorsing sluit in die ondersoek van die inhoudsgeldigheid met eksperte, kriterium- en voorspellingsgeldigheid, sowel as die betroubaarheid van die CAT en die gebruik van gespesialiseerde ADL indekse vir uitkenning van malingering. Aanpassing vir die CAT word ook voorgestel.
