Do Emotionally Intelligent People Express Their Faith at Work? An Empirical InvestigationShearer, Catherine G. 01 May 2018 (has links)
The question posed is: “Do Emotionally Intelligent People Express Their Faith at Work?” This study will use self-reported measures of emotional intelligence (EQ), Faith at Work, and Religious Commitment to determine the degrees to which individuals who are members of the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce express a level of EQ as well as faith in the workplace. The current study will test each hypothesis to determine if there is a significant relationship between the four factors of EQ and faith in the Workplace. The four factors of EQ are: Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management.

Recreation at Work: More than Fun and Games?Lacanienta, Andrew 01 June 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of Duerden, Courtright, and Widmer's (n.d.) Recreation at Work (RAW) Model and explore the relationship between RAW and employee flourishing (i.e., resilience, work engagement, organizational identification). This study explored the unique contribution from RAW and work activities in relation to employee flourishing. Structural equation modeling revealed RAW and leisure as a state of mind (LSM) perceptions (i.e., intrinsic motivation, perceived freedom, positive affect) had positive relationships with personal expressiveness (β = .704, p < .001) and organizational identification (β = .164, p = .002). Additionally, RAW had a positive relationship with resilience mediated by personal expressiveness (β = .157, p = .001). Results suggest RAW provides added value to the workplace by facilitating personal expressiveness, resilience, and organizational identification. Comparisons are discussed around the benefits of LSM perceptions during work and RAW activities. Practical applications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Barriers Encountered by African American Women Executives in Fortune 500 CompaniesGreene, Sonia Marlene 01 January 2019 (has links)
African American women's (AAW) presence has increased in the corporate workforce, but this increase has not transferred to a comparable rise in leadership positions. The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences AAW faced relating to race and gender differences that influenced their leadership development and limitations on advancement in Fortune 500 corporations. The research problem addressed in this study was the underrepresentation of AAW in senior leadership positions within Fortune 500 corporations and what can increase their representation and retention in senior level positions. The 10 participants included African American women holding senior level positions in corporate America. The concepts of race, gender, and stereotyping derived from intersectionality theory, critical race theory, black feminist theory, and racial microaggression were the foundation for the conceptual framework. The data collected through semistructured interviews were analyzed using the modified van Kaam method. Four themes emerged including race, gender, stereotyping in the workplace, and the lack of AAW led mentorship programs. The findings of this study may contribute to social change by assisting organizational leaders in policy changes to support the concerns of AAW in leadership roles around the lack of diversity and mentoring programs to increase retention and new recruitment.

The Story Behind Service With A Smile: The Effects of Emotional Labor on Job Satisfaction, Emotional Exhaustion, and Affective Well-BeingJohnson, Hazel-Anne M 01 April 2004 (has links)
The present study examines the process of emotional labor as performed by customer service employees. This research investigates some of the consequences of performing emotional labor such as emotional exhaustion, affective well-being, and job satisfaction, and attempts to determine which individual and organizational variables play moderating roles in these relationships. One hundred and seventy-six participants from 10 customer service organizations, ranging from retail stores to call centers, completed a 126-item survey. Correlation and regression analyses were conducted to test the proposed hypotheses. Results indicate that gender, emotional intelligence, and autonomy are key moderator variables in the relationship between emotional labor and emotional exhaustion, affective well-being, and job satisfaction. Females are more likely to experience negative consequences when engaging in surface acting. Individuals high in emotional intelligence experienced positive outcomes as emotional labor increased, and the converse is true for those low in emotional intelligence. Autonomy serves to alleviate negative outcomes primarily at the higher levels of emotional labor.

Service with a smile: Antecedents and consequences of emotional labor strategiesJohnson, Hazel-Ann Michelle 01 June 2007 (has links)
Organizations across the United States and in many parts of the globe are increasingly focused on providing their customers with an excellent service experience by implementing organizational emotion display rules (Hochschild, 1983). These display rules dictate the requisite employee emotions for a particular encounter (Ekman, 1973). However, over the course of a work day display rules may call for expressions that contradict an employee's genuine emotions, thus prompting a discrepancy between felt emotions and required emotions -- emotional dissonance (Hochschild, 1983). Emotional labor involves employee efforts to reduce emotional dissonance in order to adhere to organizational display rules (Hochschild, 1983; Grandey, 2000). Hochschild (1983) identified two emotional labor strategies that may be used by employees --
surface acting (managing observable expressions to obey display rules) and deep acting (corresponds to managing feelings in order to actually feel the emotion required by the display rules). This study examined emotional intelligence, affectivity and gender as potential antecedents of an employee's choice of emotional labor strategy in order to meet organizational display rules. I also investigated the differential impact of the emotional labor strategies on the individual outcomes of emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction, and service performance.Correlation and moderated regression analyses as well as structural equation modeling were employed to test the proposed hypotheses. Two hundred and twenty-three employee-supervisor pairs completed surveys to examine the research hypotheses. Correlation results indicate that emotional intelligence, affectivity and gender related to the emotional labor strategies in the expected directions.
Similarly, deep acting and surface acting displayed differential relationships with emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction and service performance. Moderated regression analyses suggest that females were more likely to report negative outcomes when engaging in surface acting. Structural equation modeling results indicate that affectivity predicted choice of the emotional labor strategies, which in turn predicted the outcomes of emotional exhaustion, job satisfaction and service performance.

The Effect of ILO’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work on the Evolution of Legal Policy in Brazil: An Analysis of Freedom of AssociationMoreira Gomes, Ana Virginia 15 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes the effects of the ILO’s 1998 Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work, taking as a case study ILO’s promotion of freedom of association in Brazil. It suggests that the 1998 Declaration’s promotional approach offers mechanisms that have the capacity to change a country's behaviour. In the case of Brazil, this change would involve reform of a corporativist trade union law that violates the principle of freedom of association. The peculiarities of compliance with the freedom-of-association principle represent a significant challenge to the ILO, especially when a country lacks the political will to comply with the principle. This dissertation shows that the 1998 Declaration provides mechanisms − information, qualification of the bureaucracy and support of independent actors − that can be used in these situations even outside the scope of a cooperation program to reform the law and modify public policy.
