"Alternate versions": the duplicities of life writing in the novels of Carol Shields

Kong, Ying 12 September 2007 (has links)
Life writing is always constituted of alternate versions of the self and the lived life of the self. The duplicities inherent in life writing are central to this study. These duplicities refer not only to the doubleness, but also to the constructedness, of life writing. My enabling assumption is that a life lived is never the same as the life written. Some of the questions at stake in the discourse of life writing include: How may the self be represented in literary form? How is biography a necessary ground of autobiography? What is the borderline between history and life story? Why and how is a lived life different from a written life? How much "truth" is there in life writing? One obvious starting point is to trace the history of selfhood, or the identity of the self. Charles Taylor's Sources of the Self: The Making of the Modern Identity (1989) provides a thorough analysis of the sources of the self in its historical transformation from Plato's time to our era. However, only recently have media theorists such as Eric Havelock (1963), Benedict Anderson (1991), Mark Poster (1995) and Ronald J. Deibert (1997) offered an estimate of how self-identity changes as technology varies, and how the form of communication alters the bases of identity. Based on discoveries in neuroscience, Paul Eakin (1999) uses narrative theory to explain why life writing is always made up of multiple versions and how the notion of selfhood is profoundly shaped by culture. William Spengemann's historical and philosophical analysis of traditional autobiographies helps to explain different forms of autobiography in terms of personal motives and cultural reasons for writing. This study shows that life writing is necessarily a process of translation in which facts must be transmuted into stories. In the process of translation, there are always alternate versions of the self, forms, media, voices, narratives, realities and finally alternate versions of fictions. By looking at seven of Carol Shields's fictions, this study aims to illustrate how Shields goes beyond models of historical, philosophical, and poetic self-presentation to find new ways and new forms for self-presentation in life writing. / October 2007

A (auto-)biografia linguageira em questões: análise de trajetórias de apropriação do Francês Língua Estrangeira de alunos de Graduação da Universidade de São Paulo / The language (auto-)biography in questions: analysis of trajectories of Graduation students at the University of São Paulo

Aguiar, Cássio Eduardo Nunes Domingos 31 March 2017 (has links)
The aim of the present work consists in analysing narratives of the trajectories and language experiences (of French, in this case) of graduation students at the University of São Paulo. We assume, here, the conception according to which all languages are not restricted to the mere status of communication tools and they stablish, associated to the identity of the individuals, a remarkable relation of reciprocity and a constant implication. As a result, it highlights the fact that the appropriation process of a foreign language is necessarily constituted by an alteration process and an identity reconfiguration. Thus, the report analysis of the trajectories and the languages experiences of the population from the study, in other words, its language (auto)biography (obtained through a questionnaire submitted to the informers in June 2015) has allowed the access to various aspects of this path of appropriation-alteration. Among those aspects, we can mention especially the representations of the individuals in terms of their language competences, the subjective and social components involved in the appropriation, their motivations, their circumstances and the process chronology.

Populiarusis nežinomas žanras: žurnalistinė (auto) biografija / Popular unknown genre: jounalistic (auto) biography

Jeromina, Loreta 14 August 2012 (has links)
Recently there is a significant growing of books about show business representatives in Lithuania. It is difficult to define the book genre, it is close to an autobiography genre, that is why the history of autobiography, the most important features of the familiar genres are analyzed in the exploratory part. Attempting to figure out which genre can be assigned to the books about show business representatives, developing what the autobiography features they match and which do not. Another important question - what leads to tell the own story and whether they are read. The work presents the case study and its results, why there is a desire to tell a life story, interviews with journalists about the readability of show business life news, examines what readable magazines are and what TV shows are most viewed. As an advertising plays an important role in human life, looking for hints of advertising in the books about show business representatives, including search ads on the Internet when the advertising face - our characters. Examining the impact of sales may be known as the human face of an advertising recovery. The author of all the books is a journalist, so it is important to understand how journalists present a person, which imagine is created. Analyzing what the positive values of this book are. The main problem of the work - the popular genre definition, its origin and the consequences are unknown (readability, taken root, explanation).

Vocational Bildung in action : A case study of the vocational education biography of master craftsman Wolfgang B.

Tyson, Ruhi January 2015 (has links)
This study looks at issues of Bildung and vocational education from a biographical perspective. These issues are conceptualized in terms of Bildung in action, developed in relation to Schön’s concept reflection in action; Bildung through making as a way of thinking about processes of Bildung connected to crafts; and Bildung in vocational contexts, ie. contexts of vocational education and work. The concepts are enriched through an extensive auto/biographical case study of master craftsman Wolfgang B.’s educational biography focusing on stories of Bildung where processes and actions are described as well as the curricular structure of his training. Some of these stories and aspects of the case have then been analyzed in two articles, one dealing with questions of aesthetic Bildung in vocational education using Schiller as conceptual lens and one dealing with educating for vocational excellence using Aristotle’s concepts techne and phronesis to understand the narratives analyzed. The results are an increased and differentiated understanding of Bildung in vocational contexts, especially as related to the coexistence of skill training with education for Bildung and the unique perspectives that auto/biographical studies of retired or semi-retired craftspeople bring to the field of research connecting biography, Bildung in action and vocational education.

[en] SELF-REFLEXIVE CROSSING, CULTURAL CONTACTS E SOCIAL SYSTEMS: PROCESS OF THEORETICAL CONSTRUCTION THROUGH OTHERNESS, POLITIC AND CULTURAL PRODUCTS / [pt] TRAVESSIAS AUTO-REFLEXIVAS, CONTATOS CULTURAIS E SISTEMAS SOCIAIS: PROCESSOS DE CONSTRUÇÃO TEÓRICA ENTRE ALTERIDADE, POLÍTICA E BENS CULTURAIS

LUIZ ANTONIO SILVA 15 August 2007 (has links)
[en] This dissertation is the consequence of a critical observation of the changes of direction in the author`s theoretical reflections, in the course of his academic life. In it, he explored the link between the experiences of production and reception observed in social situations according to different theoretical paradigms, in an attempt to understand how the reception and production of cultural products can create cultural contacts between many contexts in the complexity of the contemporary world. For reason of character, theoretical and autobiographical, this work bases itself on the dialogue between the following theoretical and methodological perspectives: the concept of rhizome as the dislocation of one`s context in Gilles Deuleze and Félix Guatarri`s thought, and also in light of the post-modern, constructivist and systemic view of Niklas Lhumann and Siegfried Schmidt. The objective is to understand the social dimension of actions by subjects that are involved in cultural practices and in the crossing to of many social systems
