Vilken fabrik sköt dig? : En jämförande studie om isotopanalys av blykulor och dess roll inom slagfältsarkeologin / Which factory shot you?

Rostén, Benjamin January 2021 (has links)
The paper examines lead isotope and trace element analysis in the context of a battlefield and their role in determining the course of the battle and categorizing the bullets within and to each participating side. It uses a theoretical framework with papers from both the archaeological and the forensic field. It concludes that trace element analysis has its criticism, especially from the forensic field, but can act as a complement to lead isotope analysis as it can give different answers from other parts of the bullet’s life cycle and should have a place in archaeology. The focus is on lead isotopes but concludes ICP-MS as a tool for examining bullets and other ammunition from archaeological battlefields is preferable. This is because of ICP-MS’s capability to analyse both lead isotope and trace elements. The paper also studies the ethical problems of using these methods and the answers they may give as a vessel for a discussion about what actions we are measuring with these methods.

Genusrepresentation i Battlefield V – En kritisk diskursanalys av digitala nyhetsartiklar

Olson, Maria January 2020 (has links)
Sökord: Kritisk diskursanalys, Battlefield V, Genus, Nyhetsartiklar, Makt, Ideologi, Hegemoni / Heading: Gender representation in Battlefield V – A critical discourse analysis of digital news articles Author: Maria Olson Final Exam Project in Media and Communication Studies 15 hp, School of Arts and Communication (K3), Faculty of Culture and Society at Malmö University, Spring of 2020 Supervisor: Per Möller Examiner: Tindra Thor The purpose of this study is to analyse the debate that occurred over the female lead character in Battlefield V during the release of the game's trailer in 2018. Using a critical discourse analysis focus on the discourse revolving around gender perception and the underlining power relations that are expressed in the news articles as well as what this entails for the larges social practice. The result analysed with gender, and feminist theory indicates there is a power struggle over the discourse revolving around the current cultural change within the production of games. Currently, more and more games are created with diversity, feminism and politics in mind which has also led to a backlash for the game industry from their fans. Through social media, fan spread a misogynistic view reinforcing the toxic male gaming cultures exclusion of minorities. D-Day: geophysical investigation of a World War II German site in Normandy, France

Gaffney, Christopher F., Adcock, J., Gater, J.A., Saunders, T. January 2004 (has links)
No / Although military sites have long been the subject of geophysical investigation, those associated with recent military campaigns are noticeably rare. In fact, although such techniques are increasingly used to identify the unwanted legacy of modern warfare, such as unexploded ordnances or mass burials, they have not been used to investigate the archaeology of such conflict. The survey here attempts to identify the archaeology of one military site (Puits d'Herode) that was part of Hitler's Atlantic Wall and to identify the key elements associated with its D-Day defences. Magnetic gradiometry, twin-probe resistance and ground-penetrating radar were used at this site and, as a result of the nature of the buried archaeology, the magnetic technique proved most valuable. Trenches and bunkers previously known from aerial photographs were located accurately and a track believed to relate to the post-D-Day advance of the Allied forces across Puits d'Herode was also identified. The use of geophysical data in the investigation of this site has provided a new avenue to examine previously difficult topics such as the quality of intelligence available at the time of the conflict and the level and accuracy of shelling; although these may seem unlikely targets for archaeological geophysics, they are important to military historians for whom eye witness accounts are becoming increasingly scarce.

Electromagnetism, Site Formation, and Conflict Event Theory at the San Jacinto Battleground and Washington-on-the-Brazos, Texas

Pertermann, Dana Lee 2011 August 1900 (has links)
Conflict Event theory has the potential to change how archaeologists investigate battlefield sites. As a theoretical paradigm, eventful archaeology allows us to give agency to social-structure changing events, going beyond collect artifacts after the battle is over. Coupled with site formation processes, this model allows us to project battle elements to re-create the historical events that occurred at conflict sites. Within this theoretical framework, we can begin to understand why the conflict unfolded in a particular manner. Two site of the Texian Revolution are particularly appropriate to this new theoretical model: the San Jacinto Battleground (SJB), the location of the last battle of the Texian Revolution, and Washington-on-the-Brazos (WOB), the location of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence. Merging this theoretical model with an investigation of site formation processes (understanding the matrix in which the artifacts lie) and pulse-domain electromagnetic surveying allows for a much more robust approach to Battlefield Archaeology. Pulse-induction allows for the detection of discrete artifacts in the soil, and is a much more reliable method than the more commonly used magnetometry. Analyzing characteristics of the soil surrounding the artifacts then gives us a third line of inquiry as to why artifacts are in certain locations in the archaeological record, allowing for an explanation as to their quality and quantity.

The Empathy of Immersion: An Exploration of Battlefield 1 Through the Lense of Empathetic Virtual Reality

Gonzalez, Katelynn N 28 March 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines two works from different mediums, the short story “How to Tell a True War Story” by Tim O’Brien and the video game Battlefield 1, to compare how each constructs empathy using virtual reality and mimetic communication between audience and the work. The thesis draws from both digital media studies and affect theory to construct a nuanced view of how empathy functions in the works. The body responds to empathy physically. As social creatures, humans feel the emotions of those around them, even if those around them are virtually constructed. In other words, the thesis will explore how video games have been used historically and what their effects are on gamers, especially gamers’ bodies and emotional responses to the constructed virtual reality. This work aims to show how the lines of fiction and reality become blurred to establish empathy within a narrative and virtual reality space.

Kommersiella spel som plattform för ledningssystem : En jämförande studie mellan klanledare och kompanichefers situationsmedvetenhet i form av riskbedömning.

Asklöf, Björn January 2007 (has links)

Morale in the Western Confederacy, 1864-1865: Home Front and Battlefield

Clampitt, Brad R. 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of morale in the western Confederacy from early 1864 until the Civil War's end in spring 1865. It examines when and why Confederate morale, military and civilian, changed in three important western states, Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee. Focusing on that time frame allows a thorough examination of the sources, increases the opportunity to produce representative results, and permits an assessment of the lingering question of when and why most Confederates recognized, or admitted, defeat. Most western Confederate men and women struggled for their ultimate goal of southern independence until Federal armies crushed those aspirations on the battlefield. Until the destruction of the Army of Tennessee at Franklin and Nashville, most western Confederates still hoped for victory and believed it at least possible. Until the end they drew inspiration from battlefield developments, but also from their families, communities, comrades in arms, the sacrifices already endured, simple hatred for northerners, and frequently from anxiety for what a Federal victory might mean to their lives. Wartime diaries and letters of western Confederates serve as the principal sources. The dissertation relies on what those men and women wrote about during the war - military, political, social, or otherwise - and evaluates morale throughout the period in question by following primarily a chronological approach that allows the reader to glimpse the story as it developed.

The War That Does Not Leave Us: Memory of the American Civil War and the Photographs of Alexander Gardner

White, Katie Janae 16 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
In July of 1863 the photographs A Harvest of Death, Field Where General Reynolds Fell, A Sharpshooter's Last Sleep, and The Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter were taken after the battle at Gettysburg by a team of photographers led by Alexander Gardner. In the decades that followed these images of the dead of the battlefield became some of the most iconic representations of the American Civil War. Today, Gardner's Gettysburg photographs can be found in almost every contemporary history text, documentary, or collection of images from the war, yet their journey to this iconic status has been little discussed. The goal of this thesis is to expand the general understanding of these Civil War photographs and their legacy by considering their use beyond the early 1860s. Although part of a larger scope of influence, the discussion of the photographs presented here will focus particularly on the years between 1894 and 1911. Between those years they were made available to the public through large photographic histories and other history texts as well. The aim of these texts, which framed and manipulated Gardner's images, were to disseminate a propagandistic history of the war in a way that outlined it as a nationally unifying experience, rather than one of division. These texts mark the beginning of the influence the Gettysburg photographs would have on American memory of the war. Within these books the four photographs became part of a larger effort to reconnect with the past and shape the war into a source for a unified American identity.

Novel Approach to Junctional Bleeding: Tourniquet Device Proposal for Battlefield Hemorrhage Control

Cabaniss, Kyle W 01 March 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigated possible solutions to the current wartime problem of junctional hemorrhaging, or massive traumatic hemorrhaging in non-tourinquetable areas such as the neck, groin, or armpit. Junctional hemorrhaging has been identified as a major contributor to potentially survivable deaths seen on the battlefield today and therefore is a priority for the U.S. armed and coalition forces (Kragh et al., 2011a; Bozeman, 2011). Common tourniquets today are standard issue and carried by soldiers in the military, but are limited to distal extremity trauma. As the battlefield has changes however, trauma has transformed from commonly seen gunshot wounds to more extreme trauma such as dismounted complex blast injuries which typically includes loss of one or more appendages. These newly found situations render the traditional tourniquet ineffective. Thus, the development of a new tourniquet to control hemorrhaging from regions such as the neck, armpit, and groin has been deemed necessary. The development of a new tourniquet for hemorrhage control included market research, preliminary testing to determine design restraints, design ideation, finite element analysis, manufacturing a prototype, and prototype testing. Research and comparisons were done of the strengths and weaknesses of tourniquets already approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Next, design limitations were found using preliminary testing on a blood-flow replicate model developed by Tracey Cheung. The results from this testing provided a framework for designing a new tourniquet. A new approach to control junction hemorrhaging was then designed, built, and tested on the Cheung model. To verify the design, simplified models were analyzed using finite element analysis. The prototype was then tested and compared against the FDA approved tourniquets, listing the advantages and possible shortcomings.
