Jakten på den manliga biblioteksanvändaren : En undersökning av hur biblioteket arbetar för att nå fler manliga besökare

Jacob, Ekberg January 2015 (has links)
National and international studies have shown an existing trend where less men than women visit a library on a regular basis. In consideration of the importance of the democratic values that the library represents such a large gap in gender demographics is a problem that librarians need to be aware of. These gender trends is a reflection of a larger problem that exists within our societies where masculine ideologies prevents many boys and men from openly enjoying reading, school studies and, thus, regular library visits. How can we as librarians and information scientists then work towards bridging that gap, and how does an awareness of these gender issues affect our planning and daily routines? These questions are at the center of this thesis and are examined through interviews with four librarians. These librarians all work at libraries that have acknowledged the gender problem by incorporating activities specifically catered to male users into their program. The empirical material has been analyzed using sociological gender theories in an attempt to place the interviewee’s answers within a broader social context. The results shows that the librarians interviewed for the study tends to be very aware of the unbalance between the genders of their users and considers it to be an important problem to solve. This can successfully be done by trying to incorporate more men into the libraries activities through special programs such as male book discussion groups. Since male patrons start dropping off at an early age it is however also of great importance that the library spends resources on working with children and teenagers in an attempt towards bridging the existing gender gap.

HBTQ-litteraturens hyllplacering på folkbiblioteket / The physical organization of LGBTQ classified literature in the public library

Johansson, Matilda January 2016 (has links)
This essay seeks to explore how five public libraries in Stockholm have chosen to organize the LGBTQ classified literature in the physical library. The questions discussed in this essay are the following: - What factors affected the librarian’s decisions when deciding how to place the LGBTQ literature? - What response have the librarians received from library users regarding the physical organization? - What changes would the librarians like to see in the future in regards to the LGBTQ literature and the overall work toward the LGBTQ community? Semi-structured interviews with seven librarians were conducted and analyzed from a queer theory perspective on knowledge-organization. The results showed that the libraries that used dedicated shelves for the LGBTQ classified literature did so in order to make it easier for its users to find the literature on their own. They were also used to send out a signal regarding the libraries positive attitudes towards the LGBTQ community. Libraries who did not use dedicated shelves argued that the shelves could create an uncomfortable situation for library users and create a symbolic separation between the LGBTQ community and the rest of society. The shelves could also send out the wrong signal that LGBTQ classified literature only targets LGBTQ individuals. Concluding analysis showed that the shelves may have an including as well as an excluding effect. As for the future some librarians expressed a desire to fight heteronormativity and make the LGBTQ community and literature a more natural part of the library work and the library collections.

”Vad är det du vill ha egentligen?” : förmedlarroller och användarbilder i direkt litteraturförmedling på folkbibliotek / ”What are you really looking for?” : Mediation roles and user images in direct literature mediation at public libraries

Ekman, Matilda, Tyrenberg, Beatrice January 2016 (has links)
The purpose of this bachelor's thesis has been to see in what way the relationship between the librarians' views on the users, and their views on the librarian acting as an intermediary, impacts on the choice of reading and on the way in which activities are designed in direct literature mediation toward adult public library users. The investigation has been based on four semi-structured interviews. A qualitative content analysis has been conducted within a thematic framework based on Jofrid Karner Smidt's mediation roles (1994) and Carl Gustav Johannsen's user images (2009). The key findings are that the librarian most often acts in the capacity of authority or as a critic (Smidt, 1994); however, in a process of personalisation and socialisation, in addition she takes the position as a normal being (Grøn & Balling, 2012; Smidt, 1994). Moreover, we have found that the librarians' views on the user vary depending on whether the mediation is planned or spontaneous – from this follows that she designs the mediation either vertically/authoritatively or horizontally/collaboratively (Grøn & Balling, 2012). Following from previous research (Hansson, 2005; Schreiber, 2006), we have, moreover, identified a new mediation role, i.e. the librarian as a social worker, and a new user image, i.e. the user as a normal being.

"Vi läser inte böcker, vi bara jobbar" : åtta kvinnor från fyra länder om sin syn på litteratur och läsning / "We don't read books, we just work" : eight women from four countries on literature and reading

Rosén Ignatkova, Sisela January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor's thesis is to gain a deeper knowledge of attitudes towards and experiences of reading and literature among immigrant women of none-European origin living in Sweden. Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight women from Afghanistan, Somalia, Eritrea and Thailand, two from each country. The women were asked to describe the role reading had during different periods of their life, for example whether there were books or newspapers at home, whether somebody used to read to them during their childhood, if their reading pattern had changed since they immigrated to Sweden and if they themselves were reading to their children. They were also asked to compare the situation in their country of origin and Sweden when it came to literacy and reading habits. The results of the interviews show that most of the women grew up in homes where there were few or no books, some had parents that were illiterate, and several of them had to quit school because of war. Nevertheless, most of them had a positive attitude towards reading and literature and were now reading to their own children. All of them said that reading is more common and is considered more important in Sweden than in their country of origin. They suggested that this was mainly due to the fact that people there have to work hard to support their family and don't have the habit of reading.

Vilken roll spelar det nya stadsbiblioteket? En användarundersökning på Stadsbiblioteket i Halmstad / What Role has the New City Library? A User Study Conducted at Halmstad’s City Library

Jedhagen, Susanne, Malm, Jeanette January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to examine what role the new city library in Halmstad has for its users. The questions posed in this study are: What do the users actually do at the library? What roles are the most significant according to the users? Have the politicians succeeded in their intention of realizing a modern library according to the users? The theoretical starting point is Andersson’s and Skot-Hansen’s theory of four different roles of public libraries. In order to extend the model we added a fifth function; the one of aesthetical experience. We used a qualitative method and received 504 questionnaires. The empirical data indicates that the most important role is the one as cultural centre, i.e. traditional use of the library as borrowing of books and other media, reading newspapers and magazines and so forth. The roles of knowledge centre, information centre, social centre and the aesthetical function are also important to the users. Our conclusions are that the original idea of realizing a modern library has been a great success. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Det svenska folkbibliotekets tillgänglighetsarbete : En undersökning om folkbibliotekets inkluderande verksamhet för äldre med funktionsnedsättningar. / Accessibility at Swedish public libraries : An investigation into public libraries including activities for the elderly with disabilities.

Ekegren, Camilla January 2015 (has links)
Public libraries in Sweden shall include all visitors in the library activities. When studying public libraries in small to medium sized municipalities and the accessibility they provide in terms of both physical and technical aids, it is not always clear if and how this inclusion is achieved. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if and to what extent Swedish public libraries fulfill their ambition to abide by the legislation regarding the inclusion of library visitors with special needs, first and foremost with focus on elderly patrons with various disabilities. The method of the study is quantitative and the empiric results were collected through an online survey. The survey questionnaire was sent to respondents in administrative positions at the public libraries of thirty-four municipalities located in the proximity of Sweden’s three largest cities. The theoretical framework used to investigate how the public libraries work to include elderly patrons with disabilities is the four-space model developed by Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen, Henrik Jochumsen and Dorte Skot-Hansen. The results show that Swedish public libraries largely abide by the legislation in the matter of inclusion, that they have implemented ways of including all their patrons in their everyday work and that they generally succeed in communicating with their elderly patrons with disabilities.

"Mer bio än bibliotek" : Klassifikation och medieuppställning i det senmoderna samhället / "More Cinema than Library" : Classification and Media Presentation in the Late Modern Society

Elnerud, Max January 2014 (has links)
This case study examines the new media presentation system in Alby public library. The aim is to explore if the contemporary Zeitgeist, wich according to the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, could be described as liquid modernity, has affected how the system was formed. The purpose is to find out how that would affect users and staff of public libaries of the contemporary. Interviews were conducted with the library staff, and plans and documents concerning the media presentation system was examined. The empirical part of this thesis starts with a study of the process that resulted in the new presentation system while the second part examines the system as such. I discovered that both the media presentation system, and the process which preceded it, contained aspects that could be traced to liquid modernity. However, I also found lingering signs of solid modernity, wich is the term Bauman uses to denote the modern era. The media presentation system could thus be described as a combination of solid and liquid modernity. I argued that the new media arrangment is a compromise with several disadvantages for both users and the library staff. The interplay between solid and liquid modernity in the contemporary public library results in a divergent situation for users and staff. On the one hand, it gives more freedom to use the library according to their own ideas. However, old structures, such as classification systems, sets limits for this development.

Upplevelser av biblioteksrummet : Det upplevda, föreställda och levda rummet / Experiences of the libraryroom : The perceived, conceived and lived space

Runemyr, Ninni, Sefastsson, Helene January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate how library users experience the space in their library. In understanding the conception of space, we have used Henri Lefebvre's triad of space which he writes about in The Production of Space (1991). We also used different interpreters of Lefebvre to understand his theory better. For this thesis we have interviewed seven users of one academic library and seven users of public libraries in different cities and communities in Sweden. All the libraries we visited were more-open libraries, that means that the libraries offers the patrons to use the libraries even when the librarians isn't there. The interviews had the character go-alongs, that means that we went along with the user in it´s library while we did a semi-structured interview or semi-structured interviews via Zoom. As a complement to the interviews made via Zoom the users drew a map of their library, in the way that they consider it, the method for this is called mental map. It was used as support for remembering the room and to place us in the room. We analyzed the empirics by using Lefebvres aspects spatial practice, representations of space and representational spaces. In our result we could see that the users experience of the library room was very integrated with others or the absence of others. Analyzing it made us understand what Lefebvre ment with social space and how bodies, our own and others influence the experience of space and how we reproduce space by entering a room. We also found that the users felt at home in their libraries and that the spaces filled their needs. The needs were to be on your own, to be in a place that motivates you, or inspires you in different ways. The library seems to be that place and also what the user expects to find in the library.
