Boundaries of Visual Motion

Rubin, John M., Richards, W.A. 01 April 1985 (has links)
A representation of visual motion convenient for recognition shouldsmake prominent the qualitative differences among simple motions. Wesargue that the first stage in such a motion representation is to makesexplicit boundaries that we define as starts, stops, and forcesdiscontinuities. When one of these boundaries occurs in motion, humansobservers have the subjective impression that some fleeting, ssignificant event has occurred. We go farther and hypothesize that onesof the subjective motion boundaries is seen if and only if one of oursdefined boundaries occurs. We enumerate all possible motion boundariessand provide evidence that they are psychologically real.

Integrated approach to solving reservoir problems and evaluations using sequence stratigraphy, geological structures and diagenesis in Orange Basin, South Africa

Solomon Adeniyi Adekola January 2010 (has links)

Sandstone and shale samples were selected within the systems tracts for laboratory analyses. The sidewall and core samples were subjected to petrographic thin section analysis, mineralogical analyses which include x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes geochemistry to determine the diagenetic alteration at deposition and post deposition in the basin. The shale samples were subjected to Rock-Eval pyrolysis and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) prior to gas chromatographic (GC) and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analyses of the rock extracts, in order to determine the provenance, type and thermal maturity of organic matter present in sediments of the Orange Basin. The results revealed a complex diagenetic history of sandstones in this basin, which includes compaction, cementation/micritization, dissolution, silicification/overgrowth of quartz, and fracturing. The Eh-pH shows that the cements in the area of the basin under investigation were precipitated under weak acidic and slightly alkaline conditions. The &delta / 18O isotope values range from -1.648 to 10.054 %, -1.574 to 13.134 %, and -2.644 to 16.180 % in the LST, TST, and HST, respectively. While &delta / 13C isotope values range from -25.667 to -12.44 %, -27.862 to -6.954% and -27.407 to -19.935 % in the LST, TST, and HST, respectively. The plot of &delta / 18O versus &delta / 13C shows that the sediments were deposited in shallow marine temperate conditions.

Unilateralism in Canadian foreign policy : an examination of three cases

Stromberg, Rhiannon Erin 17 October 2006
Though often overlooked, unilateralism as a foreign policy approach deserves to be studied, even in the case of Canada, a country that has developed a reputation as a staunch defender of its opposite, multilateralism. This thesis studies does precisely that, and is prompted, by a proposition recently put forward by Allan Gotlieb, the former Canadian Ambassador to the United States, that, when other methods have proven ineffective, unilateralism has been a very real option for Canada. The thesis explores the validity of Gotliebs claim by examining three cases cited by Gotlieb as examples of a unilateral approach taken by Canada: the Arctic Waters Pollution Prevention Act in 1970, its declaration of straight baselines around the Arctic Archipelago in 1985, and the so-called Turbot War launched by enforcement of amendments to the Coastal Fisheries Protection Act in 1995. Were these in fact cases of determined unilateralism, prompted as Gotlieb argues, by a basic need to defend the most basic of Canadas core interests, its territorial sovereignty?
Further investigation of the cases cited by Gotlieb reveals that he is correct in one sense but not in another. In all of the cases Canada undeniably acted unilaterally. But Gotliebs analysis misses the larger reality that the three initiatives were pursued within a framework of multilateralism. Canada acted unilaterally not simply for the purpose of protecting Canadas territorial integrity, but in the hopes of reinvigorating a multilateral process.

Assessment of Interplate and Intraplate Earthquakes

Bellam, Srigiri Shankar 2012 August 1900 (has links)
The earth was shown in the last century to have a surface layer composed of large plates. Plate tectonics is the study of the movement and stresses in the individual plates that make up the complete surface of the world's sphere. Two types of earthquakes are observed in the surface plates, interplate and intraplate earthquakes, which are classified, based on the location of the origin of an earthquake either between two plates or within the plate respectively. Limited work has been completed on the definition of the boundary region between the plates from which interplate earthquakes originate, other than the recent work on the Mid Atlantic Ridge, defined at two degrees and the subsequent work to look at the applicability of this degree based definition. Others suggested an alternative view of a constant width for the interplate region in recent work at Texas A&M University. The objective of the paper is to determine whether the assumption of a linear width of the region along the tectonic plate boundaries to classify earthquakes as interplate and intraplate earthquakes using accepted statistical criteria provides a better fit to the data than the constant degree definition. There are three types of interplate boundaries defined by the relative movement of the two plates to each other, which further complicates this study. The study used a nonrandom analysis of regions of the different types of boundary to compare the rate and decay of the intraplate earthquakes from a notional centerline for the known boundaries. The study used GIS software and EXCEL for the statistical analysis component of the research work. The results show that a constant width definition provides a number of advantages in determining the relative definition of interplate and intraplate earthquakes when compared to the constant degree definition developed for work on the Mid Atlantic Ridge. Further research is suggested on a randomly selected set of study sites to improve the reliability and quality of the statistical work for each type of the boundary of the tectonic plates.

The Pregnant Self

Sherwood, Rosilee January 2009 (has links)
Pregnancy, a human phenomenon experienced throughout the world and throughout history, has been largely ignored by the philosophical community. A preference for the abnormal and the extraordinary has left this common yet challenging process on the sidelines of philosophical discussion. Pregnancy stands as a significant challenge to many of our intuitions about the self, particularly those concerning the boundaries, plurality and diachronic identity of the self. Because of this, pregnancy necessitates a theory of the self which does not merely uphold our usual assumptions about the self. Daniel Dennett presents a theory of the self which meets this criterion. He argues that the self is a centre of narrative gravity: an abstract, theoretical entity which is useful for the explanation and prediction of an individual’s behaviour. Dennett’s theory, though provocative, lacks a basis in typical human experience. He relies primarily on thought experiments and extraordinary conditions to support his theory. To demonstrate the applicability and generality of this theory, it must be tested against a common, natural human occurrence like pregnancy. In this paper we explore the application of Daniel Dennett’s theory of the narrative self to the experience of pregnancy. This application yields a double result. Dennett’s theory is bolstered by a demonstration of its generality and applicability, and the experience of pregnancy is placed into a context in which it can be validated and understood.
