The study was conducted in nine herds, two from Ceará state, five from Rio Grande do Norte state and two from Paraíba state, Brazil. It was used 249 clinically health sheep of Morada Nova breed; the gender, age and body condition score were recorded from each animal. It was collected blood samples for determination of the serum levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, urea, creatinine, total proteins, albumin, globulins and thyroxine (T4), the serum activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT), the number of erythrocytes, and the packed cell volume (PCV). From the obtained results, it was observed that the number of erythrocytes and PCV from Morada Nova sheep were equivalent to the average of those presented by the remaining sheep. Furthermore, the evaluated serum biochemical panel from Morada Nova sheep did not present variation from the reference interval established for the species, except for lower levels of globulins and higher albumin/globulins ratio. It was also verified that the serum biochemical panel was affected by gender, age, and body score condition.

No. of bitstreams: 1 JoseGBGJ_TESE.pdf: 1585659 bytes, checksum: 9452e93bf012ba011555efd3d4e7e7f3 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-21 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The objective of this study was to evaluate milk production performance and quality in 14 organically certified dairy farms in 05 states in the northeastern United States, through the evaluation of 14,246 records of monthly tests, with information on production and mammary gland health of Holstein (HO), Jersey (JE) and Holstein-Jersey cross-bred (XX) cows, in the period from May/2012 to June/2015. The number of lactating cows in the herds (mean ± standard deviation) was 38 ± 18. Milk yield (MY) and milk constituents were 21.33 ± 8.04 kg/animal/day, milk protein concentration (MPY) was 3.28 ± 0.45%, milk fat concentration (MFC) was 4.26 ± 0.98% and linear somatic cell count score (SCCS) was 2.54 ± 1.80 ~ SCC = 73 ± 44 x 10³ cells/mL. Milk production and composition and health of the mammary gland among the cow breeds were evaluated in the seasons and grazing season (GS) and non-grazing season (NGS) in the Northeastern region of the United States. Among the seasons of the year, MY was higher in the spring (22.51 kg/day) (P<0.05), being higher by 1.04, 1.58 and 1.96 kg/day compared to winter, summer and autumn, respectively. SCCS was higher in the summer (SCCS = 2.60 ~ SCC = 76 x 10³ cells/mL) (P<0.05) and lower in the spring (SCCS = 2.44 ~ SCC = 68 x 10³ cells/mL). Regarding the breeds, MY and milk corrected to 4% fat (4% FCM) presented better and significant (P<0.05) performance in HO, followed by XX and JE. SCCS was higher in HO (P<0.05), and it did not differ between JE and XX. In the GS, the variables MY and 4% FCM were higher than in the NGS. Only MFC had a higher and significant mean (P<0.05) in the NGS compared to the GS. Milk yield losses were estimated as a function of somatic cell counts in milk, considering the effects of cow breed, parity (primiparous or multiparous) and lactation stage. MY losses corresponded to 0.47 kg/day (2.4%) of lactation, equivalent to 150 kg in 320 days of lactation. Estimated losses between HO, JE and XX were 0.32 kg/day (2.04%), 0.26 kg/day (2.83%) and 0.27 kg/day (1.09%), respectively. Estimated losses were higher in multiparous cows 0.40 kg/day (2.59%) compared to primiparous 0.16 kg/day (1.27%), although, estimated losses were higher in primiparous cows during the first 30 days of lactation. The decrease in MY was more pronounced in the first 30 days post-partum, and at the end of lactation for all effects. The results obtained demonstrate the importance of observing the effects of seasonality, breed, grazing season, number of lactations and lactation stage in milk production and composition, and health of the mammary gland in herds under organic management in the study region, and they can be used as a tool to adjust herd management and to obtain better indexes of milk production and quality, reducing productive losses associated with mastitis / Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho produtivo e a qualidade do leite em quatorze fazendas leiteiras com certificação orgânica em cinco estados na região nordeste dos Estados Unidos, através da avaliação de 14246 observações de testes mensais, com informações de produção e saúde da glândula mamária de animais da raça Holandesa (HO), Jersey (JE) e cruzados Holandês-Jersey (XX), no período de maio/2012 a junho/2015.

Chovatelská analýza úrovně chovu skotu ve vybraném zemědělském podniku / The analyse of cattle breeding in an enterprise - case study

HORA, Ondřej January 2014 (has links)
This work deals with an analysis of breeding cattle in the agricultural cooperative Agra Březnice u Bechyně. Data on milk production and reproduction was obtained from records of performance tests and livestock records. The results of performance and reproduction in the years 2010 to 2012 shows that the monitored breeding achieved when compared to the average population of Czech Pied cattle bred in the Czech Republic, above-average values. The efficiency of milk production in the reporting period increased by an average of 394 kg. Milk composition is at the population level. The fat content was in the period, on average, 0.02% lower and the protein content was about 0.01% lower than the values of the population in the Czech Republic. The reproduction of purebred breeding is used in a closed herd turnover. The reproductive performance achieves significantly less value than the population average length of service period. The other reproductive indicators, with the exception of insemination index reached in the period better values than the average of these values achieved in the Czech Republic. The results showed that the most common reason for withdrawal from dairy herds are problems with disease of the legs and udder disease. These problems need to be addressed in the short term better approach to monitoring and prevention in the long term appears to be the most important completion of a new barn. The breeding value of bulls used in reproduction was satisfactory level.

Dynamika růstu králíků vybraných plemen / Growth dynamics in selected rabbit breeds

POUSTKA, Milan January 2015 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was performance comparison of selected populations of three breeds of rabbits, the Moravian Blue (Mm), the Viennese Blue (Vm) and the Dutch rabbit (Ho), that is a large, a medium-sized and a small breed. The monitored aspects were the production characteristics (gain weight and carcass yield) and the reproductive characteristics (the average number of kits born, the number of all kits born, the number of live born and stillborn and successfully weaned kits, the rate of successful pregnancies, the milkness of the doe). The population of each of the breeds was monitored in a selected base of 68 litters of the Mm, 65 litters of the Vm and 84 litters of the Ho. The weight gain of rabbits was monitored in regular intervals from birth until the end of fattening, i. e. until 8 months of age in the Mm and the Vm and until 6 months of age in the Ho. The results were compared with the weight gain required by the breed standard. Based on the observed weight gain, a growth curve has been created using the Richards function in Excel and Statistica 12.0. The monthly weight gain of the monitored breeds was compared. The highest average gain in weight for the Mm was 693 g, for the Ho 480g and for the Vm 539 g. The results show a significantly higher gain in weight throughout the growth period of the Dutch rabbit than is required by the breed standard. The Moravian Blue showed a lower average increase in weight during the first five months of age than is required by the breed standard. High statistical dependence (R = 0,94, p < 0.01) between weight gain and the number of kits per litter was observed during the first month. From the second month dependence get lower. Since the third month of age, this dependence could not be proven. Based on the parameters of the growth curve, the inflection point of growth was established at 59.8 days and weight 1 528 g for the Mm, at 43.2 days and weight 895 g for the Ho and at 67.7 days and weight 1512 g for the Vm. The average number of kits per litter was 6.3 for the Mm, 6.48 for the Ho and 6.23 for the Vm. The milkness was calculated according to the weight of the litter at 2 and 21 days of age. The milkness for the Mm was 3 985 g, for the Ho 2 582 g and 3 176 g for the Ho. A significant statistical dependence (R = 0.97 0.98) between the number of kits in the litter and the milkness was found. The mortality rate was at a low level for all monitored breeds, with the highest (5 per cent) for the Vm , followed by 2.9 per cent forthe Ho and 1.4 per cent forthe Mm. Analysis showed the highest carcass yield for the Dutch rabbit (62.4 per cent), but a lower live weight gain. The carcass yield was 59 per cent for the Vm and only 56.1 per cent for the Mm. Overall, the results of the thesis show a bigger live weight gain in case of the Moravian Blue rabbit provided there are higher demands for housing and feeding. Its progeny shows a greater growth potential and, in some aspects, also better reproductive characteristics. On the other hand, the Dutch rabbit paradoxically reached a higher number of kits per litter and better carcass yield, giving meat of greater quality. The Viennese Blue rabbit had a slightly higher mortality rate than the other breeds but also a relatively large weight gain and carcass yield approaching other medium-sized meat breeds. The results of the thesis can be beneficial for novice breeders in helping them choose the right breed, as well as for existing breeders in helping them improve the strengths and eliminate the weaknesses of these breeds.

Zhodnocení reprodukce a vlastní užitkovosti v nukleovém chovu přeštického černostrakatého plemene

JANEČKOVÁ, Blanka January 2017 (has links)
The main objective of the thesis was to evaluate the reproductive utility and the achieved parameters of its own utility of the nucleus herd reared on the farm in Mladotice. The detected results have been compared with the average of the Prestice black-pied breed population. The attention has been paid to the lines of the boar representation. The number of all born piglets, the alive born ones and the weaned ones has been regarded during reproductive qualities assessment. The average daily growth, the muscle proportion and the back fat height have been evaluated while assessing the own utility. The origin of the Prestice black-pied breed with the following regeneration process with the assistance of Mirgorod, Liven, Cornwall, Berkshire, Wessex and German saddleback breeds, which contributed to the resistance of the Prestice black-pied breed, has been described in the literature review. The improvement process followed after the regeneration, especially by using Pietrain, Hampshire and Landrase breeds. The characteristics of the Prestice breed with reference to its tilted ear and typical black-pied coloring without body parts defining have been elaborated. Furthermore, the utility, the population development in the last five years and the preservation of the breed as a genetic resource have been described there. In the thesis the own utility of the Prestice black-pied breed of the nucleus herd reared on the Mladotice farm has been evaluated that does not reach breeding goal. The Akoga line is the best line considering its own utility. The reproductive utility has been evaluated as excellent. The Wiskont line has the best results. Statistically significant differences have been found among the lines considering both its own utility and reproduction.

Breed trends and effect of breed on sale price of lots of beef calves marketed via video auction

McCabe, Esther Dorice January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Animal Sciences and Industry / Karol Fike / The United States beef cattle industry is continuously evolving and changing to meet buyer demands while considering environment factors for production. Cow-calf producers make decisions within their herds that impact their profitability. Previous research shows producers can add value to beef calves through management and marketing decisions in areas such as genetics, herd health, and nutrition. It is well documented that there are numerous factors that influence the sale price of beef calves, no matter the venue through which they are sold. Historically, steer calves sold for a greater price compared to heifer calves. Apparent breed composition also influences value of lots of beef calves. Black-hided calves recently sold for a greater sale price than calves of other hide colors due to perceived differences in potential performance. Calves with Bos indicus influence usually sell for a lower price than other breed types. Marketing of beef calves through video auction allows sellers to market lots of calves to a buyer basis nationwide. A national market provides a basis for buyer preferences and potential national trends for changes in characteristics valued by buyers. Evaluation of national breed composition trends can indicate potential changes in the industry. The opportunity to evaluate if and how breed description as described by producers influenced calf sale price from 1995 through 2016 was available through a livestock video auction service. Chapter 1 is a review of the literature and an overview of the beef industry and factors affecting sale price of lots of beef calves. Chapter 2 is an analysis of breed composition influencing sale price for lots of steer calves and lots of heifer calves. Chapter 3 investigates national and regional breed description and sire breed trends over a 23-year period.

What's in a Name: Effect of Breed Perceptions & Labeling on Attractiveness, Adoptions & Length of Stay for Pit-Bull-Type Dogs

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Previous research has indicated that certain breeds of dogs stay longer in shelters than others; however exactly how breed perception and identification influences potential adopters' decisions remains unclear. Current dog breed identification practices in animal shelters are often based upon information supplied by the relinquishing owner, or staff determination based on the dog's phenotype. However discrepancies have been found between breed identification as typically assessed by welfare agencies and the outcome of DNA analysis. In Study 1, the perceived behavioral and adoptability characteristics of a pit-bull-type dog were compared with those of a Labrador Retriever and Border Collie. How the addition of a human handler influenced those perceptions was also assessed. In Study 2, lengths of stay and perceived attractiveness of dogs that were labeled as pit bull breeds to dogs that were phenotypically similar but were labeled as another breed at an animal shelter were compared. The latter dogs were called "lookalikes." In Study 3, perceived attractiveness in video recordings of pit-bull-type dogs and lookalikes with and without breed labels were compared. Lastly, data from an animal shelter that ceased applying breed labeling on kennels was analyzed, and lengths of stay and outcomes for all dog breeds, including pit bulls, before and after the change in labeling practice were compared. In total, these findings suggest that breed labeling influences potential adopters' perceptions and decision-making. Given the inherent complexity of breed assignment based on morphology coupled with negative breed perceptions, removing breed labels is a relatively low-cost strategy that will likely improve outcomes for dogs in animal shelters. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Psychology 2015

Understanding the Impacts of Breed Identity, Post-Adoption and Fostering Interventions, & Behavioral Welfare of Shelter Dogs

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Each year, nearly three million dogs will enter one of over 13,000 animal shelters in the United States. The purpose of this dissertation is to better understand how breed identity and dog welfare in the shelter, in addition to post-adoption and fostering interventions out of the shelter, can contribute to the betterment of dog lives. In Chapter 2, I conducted the largest sampling of shelter dogs’ breed identities to-date to determine their breed heritage and compare shelter breed assignment by staff as determined by visual appearance to that of genetic testing. In Chapter 4, I examined the efficacy of a post-adoption intervention intended to reduce returns by encouraging physical activity between adopters and their dogs. In Chapter 6, I examined the effects of brief stays in a foster home on the urinary cortisol: creatinine ratios of dogs awaiting adoption compared to ratios collected before or after their stays; and in Chapter 7, I characterized the relationships between multiple physiological, health, and cognitive measures and the in-kennel behavior of shelter dogs. Four suggestions from the findings of this dissertation that will likely better the lives of dogs living in animal shelters are: 1) Shelter dog breed heritage is complex and visually identifying multiple breeds in a mixed breed dog is difficult at best. Shelters should instead focus on communicating the morphology and behavior of the dogs in their care to best support adopters. 2) While encouraging walking did not influence owner behavior, adopters who reported higher obligation and self-efficacy in dog walking were more active with their dogs. Thus, post-adoption interventions that can effectively target owner perceptions of obligation and self-efficacy may be more successful in changing behavior. 3) Temporary fostering is an impactful intervention that reduces stress for dogs awaiting adoption; however addressing stressors present at shelters that are likely contributing to higher stress responding is also needed. 4) It is possible to predict the internal stress responding of shelter dogs by observing their overt, in-kennel behavior, and this study is a first step in assessing and improving the welfare of dogs living in animal shelters. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Psychology 2018

This study was designed to test polyclonal antibody preparation (PAP) against several rumen microorganisms on feeding behavior and feedlot performance of Brangus (BR) and Nellore (NE) cattle. The experiment was designed as a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments using repeated measures over time, replicated 4 times (4 bullocks/pen), in which 32 9-mo-old bullocks (254,1 ± 12,7 kg) of each of two breeds evaluated were fed for 144 days, diets containing either monensin (MON) or PAP at 30 or 300 mg/kg of dry matter (DM) daily; respectively. Measures over time were taken according to the periods evaluated during the study: adaptation, growing, finishing 1 and finishing 2. Visual appraisal was made every five minutes during 24h, and feeding behavior data was collected as follows: time spent eating (EAT), ruminating (RUM), resting, visits to water through and number of meals per day (MEA). Feed offerings and refusals were weighed daily. Feeding (FEEF) and rumination efficiencies (RUEF) of DM and NDF were calculated using combinations of feeding behavior data with DM and NDF intakes data. No significant (P > 0,05) feed additives main effects were observed for FEEF and RUEF of DM and NDF, and for any of feeding behavior variables evaluated with the exception of RUM, MEA and EAT per meal (EATMEA); in which bullocks fed MON presented longer (P < 0,05) RUM and greater (P < 0,05) MEA and bullocks receiving PAP had longer (P < 0,05) EATMEA. In addition, a similar feedlot performance was observed (P > 0,05) between bullocks fed either MON or PAP. BR bullocks had longer (P < 0,05) EATMEA and greater (P < 0,05) DM intake per meal. Significant (P < 0,05) breeds main effects were observed for all of FEEF and RUEF of DM and NDF, indicating that BR bullocks were more efficient than NE bullocks in all variables evaluated. In terms of feedlot performance, BR bullocks presented greater (P < 0,05) average daily gain ...

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of racial group (RG), slaughter weight (SW) and gender (G) on the muscle fiber area, percentage of collagen and fatty acid profile in kid meat. Seventy four animals of the following racial groups were used: Alpine (A), ½ Boer + ½ Alpine (½ BA), ½ Nubian + ½ Alpine (½ ANA), ¾ Boer + ¼ Alpine (¾ BA) and Tricross (TC- ¼ Boer + ¼ Alpine + ¼ Nubian). One animal from SW, G and RG were selected for evaluation of fatty acid profile. When the experiment started the animals were 28 days old and were weaned at 60 days old. One third of the animals was slaughtered when reaching 25, 30 and 35 kg. The experimental design was totally randomized and the Tukey test (P<0,05) was used to compare the means. There was no difference for muscle fiber area and percentage of collagen among the parameters used, indicating similarity in texture of the meat from the animals used. The gender influenced the fatty acids C14:0, C16:0, C16:1, C20:3n3, C20:5n3 and -3; the RG influenced the levels of C18:2n6c, C20:0, C24:1 and CLA cis. The SW did not affect the fatty acid profile, but the interaction G x SW influenced the levels of C18:0, UFA and the PUFA/SFA ratio. Male and heavier animals produced the best meat in terms of nutrition
