Carter v. Canada: Nonreligion in the Context of Physician-Assisted Dying

Steele, Cory 09 August 2018 (has links)
In 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled in the Carter decision that the prohibitions against physician-assisted dying, as outlined in section 241(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada, were unconstitutional as they violated an individual’s s.7 rights as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Though the jurisprudence of this landmark decision and subsequent amendments to Canadian law are interesting in and of themselves, what is particularly interesting about Carter is the framework within which physician-assisted dying is conceptualized. The Court shifts from a religiously informed framework for conceptualizing assisted suicide to a non-religious conceptualization of physician-assisted dying. Given that there remains much to be explored about nonreligion, this thesis asks: how is ‘nonreligion’ constructed by law in relation to physician-assisted dying in Canada? Since the Carter decision is not explicitly about religion or nonreligion the analysis in this thesis maps how the concepts life, death, and morality are reconceptualized. The analysis reveals that nonreligion is a phenomenon that is absent of the transcendent and is instead given positive content through a focus on autonomy. The conceptualization of nonreligion as presented in this thesis contributes to the literature that emphasizes that nonreligion is both positive and meaningful and not simply deficit terminology.

Nos fios das narradoras: tramas e urdiduras do feminino nos contos de fadas de Angela Carter e Marina Colasanti / In thread of the narrators: plots and warp in fairy tales of Angela Carter and Marina Colasanti

Simone Campos Paulino 13 February 2014 (has links)
Identificou-se, ainda, como estratégias poéticas comuns à escrita de ambas as autoras, aspectos intertextuais como a paródia, o palimpsesto e o pastiche / This dissertation aims to comparative reading of fairy tales English writer Angela Carter, in the book The Bloody chamber, and the Italian-Brazilian Marina Colasanti, present in books like Uma ideia toda azul, Entre a espada e a rosa , Doze reis e a moça no labirinto do vento. We analyze how these authors resist the death of the storyteller described by Walter Benjamin and criticize the patriarchal society, revealing, of course, a feminist stance. Identified also as poetic strategies common to the writing of both authors, intertextual aspects such as parody, pastiche and the palimpsest

This research aims at exploring shared themes in works from two British authors, Angela Carter (1940-1992) and China Miéville (1972- ). The novels chosen are Nights at the circus (1984) and The infernal desire machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972), from Angela Carter, and Perdido Street Station (2000) and The city & the city (2009), from China Miéville. As a starting point, both authors exhibit strong links with genre fiction, expressed by the chosen works. In investigating parallels between the novels the focus is going to remain on revising thematic and stylistic intersections, as well as divergences and contradictions. Among explored themes, Alterity and Hybridity are used by both authors in portraying ex-centric characters, Hybridity being used in order to emphasize the Alterity distinctive of the Other. The approach both authors direct towards genre fiction and how they deal with tropes and clichés of Science Fiction and Fantasy is also going to be examined. Finally, the research is going to deal with the concept both authors share that discourses might not be a mere reflection of reality but instead they might create and shape what we accept as real. All themes are going to be studied under the lens of postmodern theory and critic, as well as specific criticism on Speculative Fiction, Fantasy and Science Fiction

This research aims to analyze the representation of women and gender relations in the work of British writer Angela Carter (1940 - 1992). Turning to various literary forms such as myths, fairy tales and science fiction, Carter proposes the questioning of images and stories in our society which form the basis of our culture and the relationship between men and women. One can observe in her narratives a proposal for a revaluation of women's experiences, problematized through the characters' journey within the universe in which they are confined. In Carter's novels, the characters are placed in roles that they had to take, either freely or imposed by other characters, and the identity is exposed as performance, or a series of roles or appearances. Therefore, we defend the thesis that, by denying a fixed identity for her characters, the author proposes a constant process of building themselves, questioning notions such as essentialism and the values imposed by the patriarchal model of society. In this sense, we consider that female identity and gender relations are constantly questioned and ressignified in Angela Carter's novels. For this purpose, we take as theoretical basis feminist criticism and gender studies, which present themselves as ways to reflect on human condition in the literary text, questioning the constructions of femininity and masculinity present in the social strata. Initially, this paper presents a brief investigation into Carter's life and work and her relationship with the creative process as a way to understand the dialogue between the author's critical attitude and her fiction. After situating her writing in the context of contemporary female authors, we explore how female representation is developed in Carter's novels in general, passing then to a further analysis comparing two of her narratives: Heroes and Villains (1969) e The Passion of New Eve (1977)

The collapsing pillar : Jimmy Carter and US foreign policy towards Iran, 1977-1981

Rees, Samuel Huw January 2013 (has links)
The continuing diplomatic impasse between the United States and Iran dates back to the turbulent events of the late 1970s. Blame for the 'loss' of Iran, which had been one of the 'twin pillars' of US strategy in the Persian Gulf, has inevitably fallen on the White House incumbent at the time, President Jimmy Carter. This thesis offers a reassessment of Carter's decision making and his responses to the fall of the Shah, the Islamic Revolution and the US embassy hostage taking. It demonstrates that the breakdown of US-Iranian relations was not simply a one-president phenomenon and, more significantly, Carter's handling of Iran was not as dire as it is often portrayed. The research is based on a thorough examination of the available archive material, including newly released documents, as well as recent interviews with the major protagonists. When Carter took office in 1977 he inherited a badly creaking Iranian pillar that was soon to collapse altogether. The flawed policies of his predecessors placed strict limitations on his administration and unwittingly created a ticking time bomb in the form of the Shah. Despite these restrictions, Carter battled to reconcile the strategic necessities of Cold War containment with his moral principles in areas such as human rights and arms sales. In an administration seemingly dominated by the disagreements amongst his top two advisors, Carter remained the key decision maker at all times. He recognised the practical limits of American power and assumed sensible positions in response to an ever changing and uncontrollable crisis. Aside from its contemporary significance, Iran is therefore critical to Carter's disputed legacy and how he rates as a foreign policy president.

The aim of this thesis is to discuss how the gender issue is represented in literature by pointing out differences and similarities between Clarice Lispector’s A Cidade Sitiada (1949) and Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus (1984). In A Cidade Sitiada (1949), Lucrécia is a "beleaguered" woman; she is not presented to the reader as the subject of her story, but, rather, an object. She is a foreigner in her world, with what she does not interact, surrounded, exiled by city walls. In her novel Carter shows the process of modernization, love, the perspective of the marginalized, human relations and female freedom. To build the effect of liberation, the author frees herself from closed environments that were part of the settings of her previous novels and opts for an exterior space. And she also chooses as protagonist Fevers, a woman with wings, a powerful image of liberation and female transformation and aware of what she represents. The discoveries of the protagonists are set in the process of social modernization of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. While in England the woman is born with wings and free, in Brazil she remains trapped in patriarchal society. Lastly, this research paper intends to compare the way in which Clarice Lispector and Angela Carter can discuss the gender issue in literature and break through the lines of patriarchal society. From this point of view, the intention of this thesis is to confront the construction of the female characters in the works and discuss the process of modernization under the eyes of the protagonists in English and Brazilian literatures. / CNPq: 142328/2013-8

A Battle for Righteousness: Jimmy Carter and Religious Nationalism

January 2013 (has links)
abstract: Time magazine called 1976 "the year of the evangelical" partly in response to the rapid political ascent of the previously little-known Georgia governor Jimmy Carter. A Sunday school teacher and deacon in his local church, Carter emphasized the important role of faith in his life in a way that no presidential candidate had done in recent memory. However, scholarly assessments of Carter's foreign policy have primarily focused on his management style or the bureaucratic politics in his administration. This study adds to the growing literature in American diplomatic history analyzing religion and foreign policy by focusing on how Carter's Christian beliefs and worldview shaped his policymaking and how his religious convictions affected his advisors. To better demonstrate this connection, this dissertation primarily discusses Carter's foreign policy vis-à-vis religious nationalist groups of the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). By drawing on archival materials from the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library, Carter's own voluminous writings, and memoirs of other administration officials, this dissertation argues that Carter's religious values factored into policymaking decisions, although sometimes in a subtle fashion due to his strong Baptist doctrinal commitment to the separation of church and state. Moreover, Carter's initial success in using his religious beliefs in the Camp David negotiations raised expectations among administration officials and others when crises arose, such as the hostage taking in Iran and the electoral threat of the Christian Right. Despite his success at Camp David, invoking religious values can complicate situations already fraught with sacred symbolism. Ultimately, this dissertation points to the benefits and limits of foreign policy shaped by a president with strong public religious convictions as well as the advantages and pitfalls of scholars examining the impact of religion on presidential decision making. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. History 2013

The grotesque revealed itself as an agent for the female characters to enter into a metamorphic process not only on a physical level, but also in the re-signification of language itself, becoming the means for them to question and transgress repressive marks and rules that have long been institutionalized. To reinforce in the analysis we pointed out some aspects: Metamorphosis / The Wild Side, Body Transgressor / Sexuality and Language. We observe how these elements characterized in the grotesque character of the personages and jointly in the communication between the narratives of Angela Carter and Augusta Faro. In order to look at this woman and grotesque relationship, and consecutively at the points of contact that approach the narratives of both writers, the nature of this study is adequate for the theoretical, descriptive, analytical and comparative revision.
