Diffusion of Social Network Technology and Overuse among Health Industry Knowledge Workers

Toure, Abdel Rahman 01 January 2014 (has links)
Many organizations now realize the important role of social network technology (SNT) in building social capital and hence broadening their customer base. However, observations have indicated that, while working, many knowledge workers use SNT to engage in non-job related activities, potentially leading to a decrease in productivity. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the usage of SNT and productivity in the health sector. The theoretical foundation of this study emanated from Rogers's theory of diffusion of innovations and Campbell, Rodney, Scott, and Christopher's theory of performance. Collection of data involved a self-administered survey designed with tools from SurveyMonkey. Out of 123 respondents, some were team members (67%), some were independent (24%), others were team leaders (8%), and a few were administrators (2%). A multiple linear regression analysis subsequent to correlation analysis between each of the 4 variables of SNT (frequency of SNT use, duration of cellphone-based SNT use, duration of PC-based SNT use, and performance rating) and knowledge worker productivity revealed a significant relationship between productivity and performance. The findings suggest that, of the 4 SNT variables, performance rating statistically predicts productivity of the health care professional. Managers may find these results informative in their effort to boost productivity among their health care professional workers. Further investigations are recommended to explore the association between productivity and SNT among knowledge workers.

Proposal of a methodology for improving low cost GPS receivers positioning.

Erly Caldas de Lima 08 May 2018 (has links)
The technical development of electronics, the continuous reduction in the size of GNSS receptors, allied with the energy consumption decrease, transformed these products into some integrated circuits or in small Chips as small as size of a button of a shirt. In this way one can promote its integration with countless electronic devices. The association with cell phones was mainly driven by the mandate to enhance services 911 (E911) of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States, requiring that all mobile carriers of that country provide all the emergency calls location with good accuracy. So as to fulfill this necessity, the production of Chips in a large scale has been stimulated and therefore the decrease in cost and its popularity. In this way almost in its entirety, cell phones are now manufactured with GPS receivers, which makes these devices one of the cheapest sources to obtain the geopositioning. It turns out that there is a gap in the literature about how precise and accurate the coordinates provided by these equipments can be. This thesis aims through statistical tests and comparison with other GPS receivers and methods, quantify these values and propose a methodology to improve such positioning. To achieve the objective, the structure of the phone\'s operating system was modified in such a way that it was possible to access the embedded GPS Chipset observables and then converted into the RINEX standard raw data file. The tests were carried out with the original equipment and with the modified ones, with an external antenna installation which showed that using the phase measure of the carrier, the equipment can provide a positioning with an average accuracy of 0, 069m, with a default deviation of 0, 047m and a maximum planimetric positioning error of 0, 218m and a minimum of 0, 004m.

Cellphone banking at the bottom of the pyramid

Kruger, Pieter Jan Harm 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis investigate the di erent available GSM bearer channels that can be used to launch a cellphone banking application. Speci c attention is given to launch such a cellphone banking application to the so called \bottom of the pyramid". In South Africa, there are an estimate 11 to 13 million people with no bank accounts. The cellphone create an ideal opportunity to be used as a tool to reach this untapped market segment that today mainly uses cash to pay for day to day living expenses. The thesis provide more information on the cellphone banking arena in South Africa as well as certain projects in other parts of the world. The thesis also highlight new devel- opments on cellphone technology that include Android and IPhone delivery channels. Focus is placed on how the cellphone banking presentation layer must be delivered through the USSD GSM bearer channel. USSD is at the current moment the ultimate channel to consider due to its extensive reach and ability to work on any GSM cellphone handset. In conclusion, although cellphone banking can be used by any person, the bene t to bring nancial services to the bottom end of the pyramid must be considered to achieve nancial inclusion. The cellphone due to its reach is the ideal medium to access this lower end market.

In this dissertation it’s presented the current stage of the Mobile Entertainment Industry in Brazil, based on an analysis of Mobile Phone Industry and its interaction with Entertainment Industry. Thereto, it’s discussed main characteristics and difficulties found, by these two industries, trying to implement and manage a feasible business model for MEI. It’s been carried out an exploratory qualitative research when Brazilian mobile phone and entertainment content providers representatives were interviewed. Secondary documents were also analyzed – as data for the two investigated industries available in websites and business magazines articles. It was observed that, due to relative voice market saturation, the Mobile Phone Industry, in Brazil, is trying to increase its revenue, focusing on Entertainment Industry products. This merge is resulting in a new type of industry. Technology development was crucial for this interaction with technology evolution of mobile phones, incorporating multimedia features, turning itself into a new media, with the emergence of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). With the available technology, the two industries began to show mutual interest: the Mobile Phone Industry searching for new services to its users, looking for ARPU (Average Revenue per User) enhancements; and Entertainment Industry in quest of a new media to sell its products, specially games, digital music and videos. However, these two industries has positioned themselves into different bases, despite of been service industries: Mobile Phone Industry in Brazil, has based its revenue in the merchandise of commodities, as voice minutes or data exchange; yet, the Entertainment Industry has immaterial and intangible value strongly influencing the price of their products. However, different ways of doing business of these two industries are causing difficulties in the solidification of what is uselly called, in the business environment, “business model”. The development of business models that respond to the needs of the two forming industries are, according to the interviews, the main obstacle for the full potential employment of the Mobile Entertainment Industry. These differences comprise the main argument, of this author, to consider Mobile Entertainment Industry separated from its constitutive industries, generating it a ‘new industry’.

Using the Internet communication tools to facilitate learning

Xakaza, Sheila Innocentia 19 June 2007 (has links)
This dissertation describes research which investigated the use of communication tools in a WebCT learning environment. The instrumental case study investigated the level and frequency of use of the web-based communication tools during a full-fledged course delivery at a university that enrols only full-time students. The unit of analysis was the case and the instruments included group interviews, observation anecdotal notes, communication diaries, focus group and a journal/logbook. A mixed qualitative and quantitative research method was used in this research. The study evaluated how the interactivity and not how either the lesson or the WebCT function. The conceptual framework focused on interactivity, features of communication tools that promote interactivity, as well as the domains such as cognition, motivation and learner interface as aspects that influence the use of communication tools. Various web-based tools were used by a sample consisting of a selected small group of IT students who participated in the study. Those communication tools were used to facilitate learning in WebCT. The results showed a total of 145 interactions for the duration of ten sessions. The WebCT communication tools supported either synchronous or asynchronous communication. Communication tools were used to retrieve information and send text-based messages to lecturers and students. Interaction at different levels was evident between student and student, student and lecturer, lecturer and student, lecturer and lecturer, as well as, student and content. In addition to the WebCT communication tools, students used extra web-based communication tools, to facilitate their learning. It was concluded that with continuous advances in information and communication technology and with ever increasing student numbers at resident universities, more tertiary institutions should offer on-line courses. More communication tools should be considered on WebCT to facilitate more interactive learning. / Dissertation (MEd (Curriculum Studies))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Curriculum Studies / unrestricted
