Becoming Vegan : Consumers’ perceived barriers when transitioning to a vegan diet

Burenius, Johanna, Lien, Louise January 2021 (has links)
This qualitative study aims to identify challenges experienced amongst consumers in Stockholm when transitioning to a vegan diet. Five consumers between the ages of 24-27 have during a period of one month assumed the task of transitioning to a vegan diet. The results were analyzed through the lens of The Multidisciplinary Model of the main factors affecting consumer behaviour in the food domain and as well as the Cognitive dissonance theory to enable a deeper analysis. The study shows that information, supply and psychological influences are three main areas in which barriers are present. Lack of marketing in store and online, lack of clear labeling on products and lack of supply in both stores and restaurants were the most apparent challenges experienced amongst consumers which can be barriers when transitioning to a vegan diet. Furthermore, psychological influences that were perceived as barriers by the consumers was the presence of dissonance and the feeling of lack of support and inspiration.

Subcontracting of work and workers' protection in post-apartheid South Africa : a case study of cleaning services workers

Omomowo, Kolawole Emmanuel 09 April 2010 (has links)
Workers’ protection can be achieved, to a large extent, through labour law and workers’ organisation through trade unionism. Workers’ protection is defined as social protection. This study investigates workers’ experiences of their employment with regard to social protection as manifested in job security and wage adequacy. In this study workers’ perception of labour law, as a tool for workers’ protection, is considered in relation to the argument of the régulation theorists that law serves as a ‘mode of regulation’ to perpetuate the stability of the prevailing capitalist regime of accumulation. The impact of the changing nature of work on the effectiveness of labour law at achieving workers’ protection is investigated from the perspective of workers. A large employer subcontracting some support services was selected as a site of study. Data was collected using one-on-one in-depth interview to ‘tap’ into the working experiences of relevant workers and union officials. This study concludes that the changing nature of work as manifest in the decline of standard employment relationships and increase of atypical (non standard) employment, such as subcontracting undermines workers’ protection. Wages and other benefits of workers are affected. Workers survive through the support of their families and by borrowing from micro lenders which tend to suck them into a poverty cycle. The ineffectiveness of labour law to adequately protect subcontracted workers substantiates the position of régulation theorists that law is an extra-economic institutionalised practice helping to stabilize the prevailing capitalist regime of accumulation. The thinking here is that labour law is not unilaterally imposed by the state, rather, it is a product of social interaction (social relation) or struggle between labour, capital and the state within a social ‘field’ or ‘subfield’. The nature of employment of subcontracted work weakens the power of workers’ collective through trade unions. The restructuring of work leads to deunionisation and the ability of unions to organise these workers is undermined by difference in employer and pay-point between permanent workers and subcontracted workers. Personers upplevelser av egenvård vid diabetes typ 2 : en litteraturöversikt / Persons’ experiences of self-care in type 2 diabetes : a literature review

Askeroth, Caroline, Ebrahimpourgouravan, Sona January 2021 (has links)
Background: Type 2 diabetes is a growing public health disease that occurs worldwide. The incurable and progressive disease can lead to a series of serious complications in both nerves and blood vessels. Symptoms of type 2 diabetes include among others: fatigue, lack of energy, dry mouth, dizziness and depression. Treatment for type 2 diabetes is primarily a lifestyle change, thereafter medical treatment. Self-care in the form of dietary change and physical activity can reduce diabetes complications and thereby reduce societal costs. Aim: The aim was to describe persons’ experiences of self care in type 2 diabetes. Method: A literature review was made with searches in the databases Pubmed and Cinahl Complete. It is based on ten scientific articles of qualitative design. The content of the articles were analyzed and compiled as themes in the results according to Friberg. Results: The results showed that people with type 2 diabetes have different experiences of self-care. Furthermore, the results highlight that people with type 2 diabetes are in need of cultural adapted education, motivation and support. Conclusion: The results showed that people with diabetes have different experiences of self-care, both promoting and hindering. Support from both relatives and caregivers with good cultural knowledge are of great importance for increasing motivation for lifestyle changes and improving self-care capacity in people with type 2 diabetes.

Credit Strategies for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Within a Changing Environment

Wilkinson, James Edward 01 January 2017 (has links)
Access to credit in the changing environment is the primary challenge to survival for many small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) owners. The purpose of this multicase study was to understand how seasoned small business leaders in wholesaling and manufacturing in Northwest Arkansas strategically adapted to obtaining access to credit in an environment of bank mergers and acquisitions, disruptive information technology, federal and state regulations, and globalization. The conceptual framework that grounded this study was adaptive leadership and change management. Although, small business leaders prefer to obtain credit from community banks through relationship financing, leaders of SMEs can adapt to the challenges of the changing environment. The data collection process involved face-to-face, onsite, semistructured interviews of 5 participant SME owners selected via purposive sampling throughout the Northwest Arkansas region. Analysis of the transcripts involved coding data into groups using keyword identification and regrouping the data into themes. Themes that emerged from the study included the importance of formalizing a capital strategy, utilizing alternative forms of financing, and responding and adapting to change. Also, small business owners use financial software to provide technical, financial reports, and pro forma statements with variance analysis. Positive social change from the findings of this study may develop through SMEs' potential to increase job provision thereby benefiting workers' families with better employment opportunities, enhancing public infrastructure through greater tax revenues, and generating a long-term, viable, sustainable future to the region's public education through an increased tax base.

Selected Aspects of Family Change in Provo, Utah: A Replication of Canning's 1955 Survey

Miller, Richard B. 01 January 1984 (has links) (PDF)
This study is a replication of Canning's 1955 survey of family life in Provo, Utah. The original sample consisted of 239 couples who were married and currently living there. The replication was a 1983 mail survey that used many of Canning's original questions and included a sample of 255 Provo families. This study measured changes in several courtship and family variables using the companionship family as an ideal type. Findings included increases in the emphasis on the role of romantic love in mate selection, handsomeness as an attractive quality that women seek in a spouse, family members seeking recreation outside the home, and wives in the labor force. There was no change in the incidence of chaperonage. Results also indicated decreases in religiousness as an attractive qualtiy that women seek in a spouse, and the incidence of couples asking the girl's father's permission to marry.

[en] REAL-TIME METRIC-SEMANTIC VISUAL SLAM FOR DYNAMIC AND CHANGING ENVIRONMENTS / [pt] SLAM VISUAL MÉTRICO-SEMÂNTICO EM TEMPO REAL PARA AMBIENTES EM MUDANÇA E DINÂMICOS

JOAO CARLOS VIRGOLINO SOARES 05 July 2022 (has links)
[en] Mobile robots have become increasingly important in modern society, as they can perform tasks that are tedious or too repetitive for humans, such as cleaning and patrolling. Most of these tasks require a certain level of autonomy of the robot. To be fully autonomous and perform navigation, the robot needs a map of the environment and its pose within this map. The Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) problem is the task of estimating both map and localization, simultaneously, only using sensor measurements. The visual SLAM problem is the task of performing SLAM only using cameras for sensing. The main advantage of using cameras is the possibility of solving computer vision problems that provide high-level information about the scene, such as object detection. However, most visual SLAM systems assume a static environment, which imposes a limitation on their applicability in real-world scenarios. This thesis presents solutions to the visual SLAM problem in dynamic and changing environments. A custom deep learning-based people detector allows our solution to deal with crowded environments. Also, a combination of a robust object tracker and a filtering algorithm enables our visual SLAM system to perform well in highly dynamic environments containing moving objects. Furthermore, this thesis proposes a visual SLAM method for changing environments, i.e., in scenes where the objects are moved after the robot has already mapped them. All proposed methods are tested in datasets and experiments and compared with several state-of-the-art methods, achieving high accuracy in real time.
