Ruth Rocha : produção, projetos gráficos e mercado editorial / Ruth Rocha : production, graphic designs and editorial market

Daibello, Claudia de Oliveira, 1981- 24 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Norma Sandra de Almeida Ferreira / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T16:26:09Z (GMT). This research aims to analyze the work of children's literature from the Brazilian writer Ruth Rocha. Its corpus is made one hundred eighty-four works published by the author in the period from 1969 to 2013. This search is developed in two directions: first, it is proposed to inventory the author¿s production through the data collection as the release date of the works, available editions, topographical features and textual, seeking to know the general characteristics of this production. And a second that after selecting the most representative features and changes found in the works, aims to understand how these aspects reveal conceptions of children's literature by the author and producer of books and how readers reveal a prerequisite for a work, who wants to win. The research is based on the theoretical framework of cultural history, especially in studies conducted by Chartier (1990, 2001) regarding the protocols included in the text in an attempt to control the reading and representations of the world suggested the same. Also important was the contribution of studies Bakhtin (2003) regarding to responsive aspect of all discourse and influence the receiver and production conditions about the statement, as well as studies in the field of literature as those by Arroyo (1968), Lajolo (2005) and Zilberman (2005, 2006), which helped establish relationships between the data obtained social and historical context in which the works were produced. Considering the teacher as privileged reader of books for children and as a subject that selects most of the works read by them, that this research intends to discuss this production to contribute to the debate about literature-reading-school / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestra em Educação

Covering Diversity : A content analysis on cultural diversity in Swedish picture books aimed at children from 0-6 years of age.

Djalali Dehghani, Mina, Lassfolk, Emilia January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to analyze cultural diversity in Swedish picture books for kids between the ages of 0-6. The project’s ambition was to contribute with further knowledge about representations of cultural diversity in children's literature. The project produced a proposal for how a series of picture book front pages that include cultural diversity can look in the current Swedish market. Previous studies in the children's literature field mainly focus on sex- and gender-related issues. It was therefore interesting to instead look at the subject of cultural diversity in children's literature because studies with this phenomenon as focus are lacking, especially in Sweden. The questions were: What does the representation of cultural diversity look like in Swedish picture books aimed at children aged 0-6? Which design elements have been applied most frequently on the covers of picture books aimed at children aged 0-6 in Sweden during the last 5 years? The project was based on the following theoretical frameworks: cultural diversity, children's learning, representation and semiotics, identification and identity, the visual research and design elements. Cultural diversity was used for a better understanding and defining of the issue. The children's learning was used to gain a deeper comprehension of the book's role in the child's life. Representation and semiotics were used to understand the connection between signs and the message they carry, as well as being able to get an accurate knowledge about signs from the analyzed covers for further applications. Identification & identity was used to understand how the representation of characters can affect the children. The visual research was used as a basis for the analysis of the covers. Design elements were used for a more detailed analysis  of  picture book cover’s selected parts. The method used for this study was a quantitative content analysis since it gave the opportunity to analyze a vast range of analysis units. The selection consisted of picture book covers in Swedish aimed at children aged 0-6. These books were selected randomly from the Karlstad city library's collection for the reason that these books are accessible  to the public. The analysis revealed that there is a lack of representation of darked skin characters, but the representation of dark-colored hair and light-colored hair were relatively equal. The results also showed that it was most common not to include character names or to have made-up names on the covers. Nevertheless when names were mentioned,  there was no clear connection between the name and cultural variation. Finally, the analysis showed that cultural symbols were barely represented, and in those few times that it was represented Christmas was the only theme. The result on the design elements showed that the most common general color was blue, the most common color of the title was red and the most frequent color of the rest of the text was black. All texts were generally written with the san-serif character family where the title was written in capitals and the rest of the text was written in lowercase letters. The overall of the text typographical was asymmetrical and the characters were generally placed in the middle of the page. The conclusions are that the representation of cultural diversity is to some extent included on the covers of the picture books, however there are plenty of areas in need of improvement. The most positive was the inclusion of different hair colors, otherwise more diversity aspects needed to be implemented, for example more characters with darker skin tones and names with diversal origins.

This study aims to contribute to knowledge about children’s books as a tool for children’s learning. The purpose of this study is to highlight how preschool teachers describe how they use children’s books in their teaching to invite children into the world of the books and how they make books come alive and elaborate different topics. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with ten preschool teachers from different preschools in Sweden. We use literary fantasy worlds and play-pedagogy in the analysis. The result shows that play is central to both working methods and children’s learning with books. The social communities and the pre-school teachers’ way of working, foster children’s imagination, development and learning. The most prominent method is when children’s books become a starting point in the entire working method and the children can experience the books in multiple ways. The dramatization of book characters and elaborated environments are central methods of bringing the children's book to life. Book talks, where the preschool teacher together with the children discuss and talk about the book while reading it is another method. In the preschool teachers’ reasoning, their interest, attitude and participation in play are important. The working methods that they elaborates are described enthusiastically and captures an interest from both adults and children. The results show that when preschool teachers and children create a shared fantasy-world together, this gives the children literacy experiences and makes literature come to life in a memorable way.

O livro para crianças em tempos de Escola Nova = Monteiro Lobato & Paul Faucher / The children's book in The New School years : Monteiro Lobato & Paul Faucher

This dissertation examines the history of children's books in Brazil and France between the decades of 1920 and 1940 and its close relation to the education renovating movement in both countries; it focuses on the work of the Brazilian author Monteiro Lobato (1882-1948) and the French Paul Faucher (1898-1967), creator of the famous Père Castor albums. While keeping friendship relations with eminent educators of the Escola Nova [New School or Progressive Education] movement, both Lobato and Faucher carried out pioneering practices in children's books production. It is possible to notice a fundamental common aspect in the work of both authors: the presence of a pedagogical project underlying their editorial project. More than comparing common and distinctive points in the work of these two supporters of reading, the main objective here is to elucidate some aspects that contribute to these similarities and differences by identifying the factors that shape these elements of comparison in the context of the creation, dissemination and reception of their work. In this dissertation, I sought to examine what was the perception that Lobato and Faucher had about the Escola Nova movement, how their connection to the movement reflect in their books, which pathways each of them took and what were the results of the choices they have made. Are they mostly differences or similarities? In trying to answer these questions, the research sought to examine not only books, but also personal letters, journals, notes, sales reports, conference proceedings, and all sorts of printings that document the authors' activities and the relations they established with writers, editors, artists, intellectuals, politicians and educators. The conclusions I have reached point toward a similarity in the literary systems of Brazil and French in the 20s, 30s and 40s; they also indicate similar conceptions of childhood and education in Lobato and Faucher; in contrast, however, the findings also reveal differences in the methods used in the editorial and literary projects that are at the origin of their books / Doutorado / Literatura Geral e Comparada / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária

Parental Portrayals in Children's Literature: 1900-2000

DeWitt, Amy L. 08 1900 (has links)
The portrayals of mothers and fathers in children's literature as companions, disciplinarians, caregivers, nurturers, and providers were documented in this research. The impact of time of publication, sex of author, award-winning status of book, best-selling status of book, race of characters, and sex of characters upon each of the five parental roles was assessed using descriptive statistics, cross-tabulation, and multinomial logistic regression techniques. A survey instrument developed for this study was completed for each of the 300 books randomly selected from the list of easy/picture books in the Children's Catalog (H.W. Wilson Company, 2001). To ensure all time periods were represented, the list was stratified by decades before sampling. It was expected that parental role portrayals would become more egalitarian and less traditional in each successive time period of publication. Male authors were expected to portray more egalitarian parental roles, and the race and sex of the young characters were not expected to influence parental portrayals. Award-winning books were expected to represent more egalitarian parental roles. Books that achieved the Publisher's Weekly all-time best-selling status were expected to portray parents in less egalitarian roles. Secondary analyses explored the prevalence of mothers' occupations, parental incompetence, and dangerous, solo child adventures. While the time of publication affected role portrayals, the evidence was unclear as to whether the changing roles represented greater egalitarianism. The race and the sex of the young characters significantly affected parental role portrayals, but the sex of the author did not influence these portrayals. While award winning and bestselling texts portrayed parents differently than books that did not achieve such honors, most did not provide enough information to adequately assess parenting roles. Half of the mothers who worked in the texts worked in conjunction with their husbands rather than independent of them. Over 10 % of mothers and fathers acted incompetently. The time of publication and the sex of the author was associated with the prevalence of solo, dangerous, child adventures. Subsequent implications and recommendations suggest the inclusion of stronger parental characters in children's books. Many of the parents are portrayed as inactive, incompetent, or neglectful. The concern is that children are exposed to these picture book portrayals during the primary years of identity acquisition.
