Joseph Ritson and the publication of early English literature

McNutt, Genevieve Theodora January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the work of antiquary and scholar Joseph Ritson (1752-1803) in publishing significant and influential collections of early English and Scottish literature, including the first collection of medieval romance, by going beyond the biographical approaches to Ritson's work typical of nineteenth- and twentieth-century accounts, incorporating an analysis of Ritson's contributions to specific fields into a study of the context which made his work possible. It makes use of the 'Register of Manuscripts Sent to the Reading Room of the British Museum' to shed new light on Ritson's use of the manuscript collections of the British Museum. The thesis argues that Ritson's early polemic attacks on Thomas Warton, Thomas Percy, and the editors of Shakespeare allowed Ritson to establish his own claims to expertise and authority, built upon the research he had already undertaken in the British Museum and other public and private collections. Through his publications, Ritson experimented with different strategies for organizing, systematizing, interpreting and presenting his research, constructing very different collections for different kinds of texts, and different kinds of readers. A comparison of Ritson's three major collections of songs - A Select Collection of English Songs (1783), Ancient Songs (1790), and Scotish Songs (1794) - demonstrates some of the consequences of his decisions, particularly the distinction made between English and Scottish material. Although Ritson's Robin Hood (1795) is the most frequently reprinted of his collections, and one of the best studied, approaching this work within the immediate context of Ritson's research and other publications, rather than its later reception, offers some explanation for its more idiosyncratic features. Finally, Ritson's Ancient Engleish Metrical Romance's (1802) provides a striking example of Ritson's participation in collaborative networks and the difficulty of finding an audience and a market for editions of early English literature at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

Avgränsningsmetodens betydelse för hydraulisk modellering av spill- och dagvattennät / The effects of delineation metods on hydraulic modelling of wastewater networks

Johansson, David January 2019 (has links)
The method of delineating a model into sub-catchments with homogenous hydrological parameters, before performing hydraulic simulations, can be tedious work. Different approaches and methods for this purpose exist, but the understanding for how the choice of delineation method affects the modeling process and in the end the simulation results is limited.    This thesis explored how four simplified delineation methods, in comparison with two detailed methods, affected hydraulic simulation of a rain event on six different model set ups. The detailed methods were based on terrain analysis and property boundaries. The simplified methods were composed of twomethods based on terrain analysis of elevation models, and two methods based on Thiessen polygons. The delineation methods were applied on one stormwater model, one combined storm- and wastewater model, and on four wastewater models. All model parameters except for those associated with the sub-catchments (time of concentration, imperviousness) were kept constant as a scenario of a rain event with a return time period of 10 years and maximum intensity of 22.8 µm/s (82.1 mm/h) were simulated for every delineation method and model set up.   The different methods resulted in differences in simulated maximal water depth in the modelled manholes. The simplified methods tended to underestimate the water depth. Additionally, the deviation from the detailed methods exceeded 0.1m, which is a threshold value for when the deviations will be of practical importance. Greater deviations occurred upstream in the sewer system and for models with greater runoff volume. No unambiguous patterns were found between the methods and the model setups. Hence, the delineation methods cannot by themselves explain the observed deviation in the simulated water depths. The results indicate that it is more suitable to apply a simple method on a sewage model in a suburban area, than for a stormwater model in an urban area. In addition, the simplified methods based on Thiessen polygons showed more agreement with the detailed methods than the simple methods based on terrain analysis.

Settling Time Measurement Techniques Achieving High Precision at High Speeds

Kayabasi, Cezmi 05 May 2005 (has links)
Settling time is very important for data acquisition systems because it is the primary factor that defines the data rate for a given error level. Therefore settling time measurement is a crucial test. The goal of the project was to design, test and compare different measurement techniques. Three methods were tested to the accuracies of 0.1% and 0.01%. Also simulations were conducted to explain the parameters that affect the settling behavior. Additionally bench measurements were correlated to simulation results. This report is intended as a guide for settling time measurements.

Garbage Collection for Java Distributed Objects

Dancus, Andrei Arthur 02 May 2001 (has links)
We present a distributed garbage collection algorithm for Java distributed objects using the object model provided by the Java Support for Distributed Objects (JSDA) object model and using weak references in Java. The algorithm can also be used for any other Java based distributed object models that use the stub-skeleton paradigm. Furthermore, the solution could also be applied to any language that supports weak references as a mean of interaction with the local garbage collector. We also give a formal definition and a proof of correctness for the proposed algorithm.

This dissertation approaches the composition of the urban landscape of Ponta Grossa through the iconography of Domingos Silva Souza. Its main goal is to investigate the transformation and the permanence of urban elements that are significant to the population of Ponta Grossa as marks that characterize its landscape. The context of this discussion is based on the narratives of followers of the Foto Elite page on Facebook, regarding the city's visibility through the divulgation of photographs produced by the photography company Foto Elite over its 64 years of activity. The study also points out methods to analyze the relationship between landscape and photograph scientifically. The methodology is based on works of urban landscape monitoring and it involves interviews with the photographer responsible for the production of the Foto Elite image collection, in addition to investigations and interpretations of the followers' reactions on Facebook. These observations are related to interpretations of content analysis according to Bardin (1979) and to the visible aspect of the landscape as a form of geographical thought. As the result, we found that the urban landscape of Ponta Grossa can be comprehended as a configuration of multiple texts related to the interpretation of urban symbols, analyzed through four fundamental dimensions: the photographic act of Domingos and his journeys through space and time in the city; the availability of an intentional image collection on Facebook; the possible meanings conveyed, “shared”, and “liked” by the followers of the Foto Elite page about the photographs available online; and the theoretical-methodological resources employed in the symbolic interpretation of the urban landscape, which resulted from our intellectual choices based on recent publications (BESSE, 2014; COLLOT, 2013; GOMES, 2013) on the manifestations and representations of the landscape, considering the aspects of perception, sight and memory of individuals that took part in this research. The emphasis on the symbolism of the landscape meets the perspective of identity, in the degree that the landscape is seen and linked to significant aspects attributed by its subjects, creating a dimension of emblematic identity based on their ideals. Thus, we observed that the urban landscape of Ponta Grossa was constructed over time in a process determined by the wishes of its inhabitants, recognizing grandiose projections as a way to strengthen a feeling of cosmopolitanism, while manifesting an intense paradox regarding the desire for progress and the feelings of nostalgia, aiming to have the city of Ponta Grossa as a protagonist in history.

Impact of migration to the UK on Lithuanian migrant family relationships

Bremner, Ausra January 2017 (has links)
Since the opening of European borders to new EU member states, a large number of immigrants continue to arrive in the UK and specifically to the East Midlands and East Anglia. To date, little or no research has been conducted to understand their experience and adjustment in this part of the country. With my research I aimed to find out how Lithuanian emigration affected family relationships and to identify issues that families face when a member emigrates on his/her own. I conducted qualitative research using different methods of data collection: online (skype) and face-to-face interviews, focus group and remote discussion techniques. Data has been coded using NVivo8 and NVivo10 and analysed using grounded theory. Findings show that the transition stage, while a family lives apart, puts an enormous strain on relationships within a family. However, it does not lead to nor causes break ups provided the family was a close unit prior to migration. The final results support the emerging theory that if the family had good relationships back in Lithuania, then all challenges of migration would not break that bond. On the contrary, they would strengthen relationships. My findings answer the initial research question as to whether migration to the UK affects Lithuanian family relationships by suggesting that it does not any more than any other stressful life events, e.g. death, childbirth, job loss, illness, house move, etc. Findings suggest that, if families discuss matters and look for the solutions together, the negative impact of migration might be avoided or lessened. My research contributes to the knowledge by applying novelty frameworks such as grounded theory and Layder’s theory of social domains in order to analyse and understand the Lithuanian migration phenomenon in the UK, particularly in East Anglia and the East Midlands.

Atravessamentos - axiomas improváveis / -

Iara Freiberg 05 September 2017 (has links)
Pretendo, enfim, convidar o leitor a diversas possíveis navegações e sobrevoos. / This work is proposed as the formulation of a personal glossary from a collection of diverse elements articulated as a reverberation of my way of producing. Images of many natures (my own works, works of other artists, photographs, diagrams, schemes, etc.) and texts of diverse origins (artists\' writings, theoretical articles, literary stories, technical descriptions and my own texts) are here articulated subjectively, establishing connections and relationships that aim to map and present the process through which I create my interventions. They are choices based on personal interests, on affinities with the content of each of the original works, but also related to affections directly linked to my work. I understand this glossary as a net, a cloud, a device, assemby of elements from the collection - a work in progress, open, unfinished and unfinishable, constantly changing and growing, which finds in this version a provisional configuration. Thus, I do not pursue to impose a precise discourse or a specific narrative, linear and chronological. Neither do I intend to make theoretical analyses, nor to propose definitions, but to enable and provoke encounters. Ultimately, I wish to invite the reader to various possible navigations and over flights.

Calliyeris, Vasiliki Evangelou 23 May 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Vasiliki Evangelou Calliyeris.pdf: 1496420 bytes, checksum: a342b524a305e962cb1286f267c52268 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-05-23 / This work has as objective analyze comparatively the respondents profile and the results obtained by two different data collection approaches: by internet (online) and face to face at home (offline). The criteria selected for this comparison were the response return rate for both methods, the answers quality obtained on the attributes evaluation questions and the results on habits and attitudes of the selected samples. The first two chosen criteria refer to a topic very discussed in the academy that is the relationship between the respondent and the electronic data collection method, on which is believed to be uncontrolled, causing low access rate and also compromising the quality of data collected. The last criteria selected refers to another theme approached by academics which is the respondents profile that both data collection methods reach, which is believed to be distinctive and in consequence, provides differences in consumption behavior of the approached targets. To reach the proposed objectives, initially some in depth exploratory interviews were conducted with executives of research institutes acting in Brazil, aiming to understand their point of view regarding the capability of the online research method. Subsequently a quantitative study was conducted through two data collection methods, electronic by internet and face to face at home, with two different samples, which results were compared. The hypotheses were confirmed once there were differences in answers return rates, bias on attributes evaluation caused by one of the targets and also differences in both social-demographic profiles that reflected in discriminant consumption habits and attitudes. This work is justified in a way that it presents a current and controversial subject in the academy and in the business world, which focus is debate the replace of the traditional date collection methods by the contemporary one by internet, or even its complementarity, in a moment that the virtual network is increasing its penetration in the relationship company-consumer / O presente trabalho tem por objetivo analisar comparativamente o perfil dos respondentes e os resultados advindos de duas abordagens distintas de coleta de dados: via internet (online) e via presencial face a face domiciliar (offline).

No. of bitstreams: 1 Camila Lopes Garcia.pdf: 4300232 bytes, checksum: e034c96be58a34dffa252f8d510f93ba (MD5) Previous issue date: 2010-10-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The research Collections of floating images: digital online photo albums analyzes the photo collections in the passage of the secondary media to the tertiary media, that is, the transition of the traditional photo album to the digital online photo album put in the social network services, such as Orkut, Facebook and Flickr. The transformations on the amateur photographic habits are analyzed, concerning the filing logic and its social function, due to the technological substitution and the individualization of the machine that produces images. To do so, based on historical and theoretical perspectives, the image is taken in relation to death from the rupestrian paintings to the techno-images, part of Ivan Bystrina s, Edgard Morin s, Régis Debray s and Hans Belting s studies and the sharing of private life photo albums in digital environment, sustained on Vilém Flusser s concepts of no thing , greed and cosmic brain , Norval Baitello s iconography, Dietmar Kamper s visibility crisis , Eugênio Trivinho s ideia of real time existence and Jean Baudrillard s concept of simulacrum . Three digital online photo albums were analyzed, which made possible the identification of two different analyses categories of photo collections on the internet: the ones that give real existence to the network member s profile and the ones that contribute to a common world mapping, due to the use of a search model, or information recovery, by folksonomy tags / A pesquisa "Coleções de imagens flutuantes: álbuns fotográficos digitais on-line" analisa o colecionismo fotográfico na passagem da mídia secundária para a mídia terciária, isto é, na transição do álbum de fotos tradicional para o álbum de fotos digital on-line alocado em redes sociais como o Orkut, o Facebook e o Flickr.
