Visual trauma: Representations of African bodies in the 1983 Contre Apartheid ExhibitionPetersen, Charlise January 2018 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA (English) / After the 1976 student uprising, South Africa entered a period of increased violent state
repression. The struggle against apartheid also became increasingly globalised, as can be seen
in the UN resolution and the rise of various international anti-apartheid organisations. My
thesis looks at the various ways in which art was used as a response to the crisis of late
apartheid in the 1980s, focusing on a landmark international exhibition, the Art Contre
Apartheid exhibition which opened in Paris on 1983. It examines the context and history of
the Art Contre Apartheid collection, and follows its path to its current location at the
Mayibuye Archive at the University of the Western Cape, where it mostly languishes in
packing crates. My research locates its analysis of the works in broader debates around art
and politics during the struggle years in South Africa, but also to highlights the continuities
and contrasts between international responses to apartheid, and local struggle art produced in
the period surrounding the launch of the exhibition. Some of most compelling works of art in
the collection depict the human form, and register acts of torture. The analysis focuses
specifically on depictions of a fragmentation and dismemberment of the human body.
Drawing on Elaine Scarry's argument about the limitations of language as an adequate
response to trauma, my research develops an analysis of these works that demonstrates how
the body becomes a privileged site in which violent political contestations are made visible.
The thesis also deals extensively with the 'absence of form', which highlights the various
instances in the ACA collection where abstract art was used as a signifier of pain, and thus
the unspeakable effects of apartheid.

The Swedish American Bibliography Project. A Case StudyJansson, Martha January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is a case study of the Swedish American Bibliography (SWAM), a special subject database in the Swedish Royal Library’s library information system, LIBRIS. The research intentions are to explore and define the bibliography, and, by resolving issues concerning the responsibility for the bibliography, to fulfill the broader intention of clearing the way for its continuation. During the academic year 2006/2007 the qualitative methods of literature analysis, website analysis, email interviews and correspondence were used for investigating the bibliography. Results of research question one showed the SWAM bibliography’s beginnings and its basis in Swedish cultural heritage. Results of research question two showed the bibliography’s relationship to the Royal Library’s duties and instructions. Results of research question three showed the organization of knowledge in the bibliography’s scope, its digital structure and its accessibility. Results of research question four compared the bibliography to similar Nordic bibliographies. Results of research question five covered the Swedish and North American institutions collaborating on the project to keep the bibliography going and addressed the project member institution representatives’ ideas for the bibliography’s future. In addition to the bibliography material’s significance for Swedish cultural heritage, the conclusions revolved around the need for a combination of open communication channels among the member institutions, a sound financial base of operations and strong leadership and around the Royal Library’s ultimate head responsibility for the SWAM bibliography’s continuation. / Uppsatsnivå: D

Assertion and accommodation : a study of the assertive language in the conversations of school-age (5-13 years) girlsTopham, Emma January 2018 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate the use of accommodation of assertive utterances (AUs) in the conversations of 49 girls aged 5;0-13;1. Based on the findings of earlier research that the use of such language is more closely related to age than to gender, it was predicted speakers would accommodate their use of and response to assertive utterances as a result of their partner's age. Naturalistic language from these speakers was collected over a year, and evidence of accommodation was observed in all speakers. Fewer AUs were used with younger speakers compared to older ones, and those used with younger girls were more likely to be produced with the sole purpose of controlling the hearer's behaviour. In addition, AUs were more likely to be complied with, or accepted, when they were produced by older girls. Given what is known about the types of language used by powerful/powerless individuals, it appears that these speakers consider age to be an indicator of status. A particularly interesting finding was that it was the age of a speaker in relation to other members of the conversation that influenced their use of and response to AUs, rather than the age of the speaker alone.

Nature is an exploratory work on expressing and materializing a mood based on the memories of a night walk. I portray the experience and materialize it into fabric. By examining the interaction between different textile techniques, I create a collection that gives a perception of my experience of nature. Text from Caroline Ringskog Ferrada-Nolis book Naturen has been the starting point in building up the collection. The result is a dynamic collection of textiles which includes digital printing, ausbrenner, jacquard weaving and a knitted structure. / Program: Textildesignutbildningen

Os livros eletrônicos e as bibliotecas / -Serra, Liliana Giusti 06 July 2015 (has links)
This research discusses the applicability of electronic books (e-books) in libraries and the transformations that this resource can provide in information units and librarianship activities. To do that, are analyzed the book transformations, in its supports and formats, through the ideas of Vannevar Bush, the Dynabook, the first electronic reader and the content offer provided by Gutenberg Project until the evolution of e-book. The various ways in which the ebooks are denominated are presented, seeking for the concept the empirical object. Are identified the four elements of the e-book: the format, the device, the platform and the DRM, and the transmutation in the acquisition process, with the possibility of content licensing as opposed to property. In this aspect, the theory of first sale and the fair use are analyzed and its implications for libraries. From the identification of types of digital content providers, as editors, aggregators and distributors, and the access to platforms and content, the main business models are analyzed, Perpetual acquisition, Signature, Demand Driven Acquisition, Short Term Loans and Evidence Based Selection, addition of open access. From the business models characteristics to acquire digital content, are analyzed some aspects of collection management, trying to identify significant questions about the libraries practices. The text ends with the advantages and disadvantages of the e-books adoption in libraries and the importance of continuing studies on this topic.

Targeted feedback collection for data source selection with uncertaintyCortés Ríos, Julio César January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to research on pay-as-you-go data integration through the proposal of an approach for targeted feedback collection (TFC), which aims to improve the cost-effectiveness of feedback collection, especially when there is uncertainty associated with characteristics of the integration artefacts. In particular, this dissertation focuses on the data source selection task in data integration. It is shown how the impact of uncertainty about the evaluation of the characteristics of the candidate data sources, also known as data criteria, can be reduced, in a cost-effective manner, thereby improving the solutions to the data source selection problem. This dissertation shows how alternative approaches such as active learning and simple heuristics have drawbacks that throw light into the pursuit of better solutions to the problem. This dissertation describes the resulting TFC strategy and reports on its evaluation against alternative techniques. The evaluation scenarios vary from synthetic data sources with a single criterion and reliable feedback to real data sources with multiple criteria and unreliable feedback (such as can be obtained through crowdsourcing). The results confirm that the proposed TFC approach is cost-effective and leads to improved solutions for data source selection by seeking feedback that reduces uncertainty about the data criteria of the candidate data sources.

Previous issue date: 2010-11-29 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / Pablo Neruda, in addition to writing poetry and used to participate of the political life of Chile, used to collect the most different objects collected in many different ways and in different places where he travelled. Many of the objects of his collection were given by friends, others were found in the beach, others were bought.
Neruda, by his poetry, managed to materialize the image of what was seeing by observing his objects, in special some shells that were part of his collection of snail (as he said). In this dissertation, we present some aspects related to the confluence between poetry and science. To do so, we compare the poetic description of the shells, with description in scientific form.

Caracterização do trabalho da enfermagem em laboratório de análises clínicas / Characteristics of the activities performed by nursing professionals in clinical laboratories.Silva, Adriana Marques da 12 March 2004 (has links)
This qualitative and quantitative study, an exploratory-descriptive study, examines the characteristics regarding the work performed by nursing professionals in clinical laboratories. The general goal aims to identify roles played by nursing professionals in clinical laboratories that allow us to characterize the nursing work process. The specific goals seek to identify health workers that are responsible for collecting samples, to distinguish the activities played by different nursing professionals and to learn how they are inserted in the organizational structure. The theoretical reference adopted is based on studies regarding work procedures and human resources in health and nursing. A questionnaire was used to collect data and the sample comprised 45 institutions. Regarding the clinical laboratories, result analysis revealed that 15.6% of them do not offer in-service training and 60% do not do it on a continuous manner; nurses basically take on the responsibility for training other nursing professionals. Regarding human resources, 77.8% are nursing assistants, 13% are nurses, and 9.1% are practical nurses. There is evidence of a social and technical division of the workload: nursing assistants provide direct care, nurses manage the processes, and practical nurses perform both activities. No relevant differences were observed between the activities played by nursing assistants from those played by practical nurses. Furthermore, there are other professionals that share the same activities played by those nursing professionals. In most cases, nursing professionals are subordinated to other areas and have little autonomy in the organizational structure.

Diários fotográficos de bicicleta em Pernambuco: os irmãos Ulysses e Gilberto Freyre na documentação de cidades na década de 1920 / Photographic diaries on a bike in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco: cities documentation by brothers Ulysses and Gilberto Freyre in the 1920sLuciana Cavalcanti Mendes 14 April 2016 (has links)
This interdisciplinary research focused on the segment of the photographic collection of intellectual presents a case study of 84 images taken by amateur photographer Ulysses Freyre about some buildings and streets of the cities of Olinda and Recife from 1923 to 1925. Ulysses took the photos during trips bicycle on Sundays with his brother, the sociologist Gilberto Freyre. The objective is to trace two uses of their photographs: as a basis for drawings by Manoel Bandeira for the \"Livro do Nordeste\", organized by the sociologist in 1925 on the centenary of the Diario de Pernambuco newspaper and as part of a project of inventory of the civil architecture. These photographs were used by the Historic Superintendence of Monuments in 1928 in Pernambuco. These studies are related to the field of the photographic circuit at these cities in urban transformation in the early twentieth century in order locating and disclosing the Ulysses\' photos as artifact of memory to the political-intellectual embryonic project of Gilberto in the period. The photos are in the collection of Gilberto Freyre Foundation, in Recife, Pernambuco.

We invite readers to follow us on a journey through time and space, in order to observe the path taken by a number of bororo artefacts set in motion by Salesian priests more than 80 years ago. Taken to Italy to be displayed in missionary exhibitions, these objects were repatriated in 2001 to be shown at the just then inaugurated cultural center of the Meruri indian village, in Brazils Mato Grosso State. By highlighting this collection, we will observe, at once, the social processes that have constituted it, as well as the transformations of peoples trajectories, of collectivities and institutions that gravitate around it. Before assuming these artefacts as elements of a specific bororo ethnographic collection under control of a Salesian mission, our interest is to understand its production as such. Far from a perspective that makes reference to a fixed cultural scale, our journey transforms such collection into a thread that penetrates in a tangle of social and symbolic relations, from which these pieces emerge as moving signs among variable systems of meanings.
