Diese Dissertation, befasst sich mit Wechselwirkungen zwischen Weidevieh und Wildtieren und basiert auf der Hypothese, dass sich stark transformierte europäische Landschaften und weniger gestörte afrikanische Savannen gegenseitig als Referenz dienen können. Aufgrund von Parallelen in der Domestikationsgeschichte, fungieren europäische und afrikanische Hausrinder als theoretischer Rahmen. Die Daten wurden mittels Kamerafallen und Interviews in vier Fallstudien erhoben. Die Untersuchungsgebiete befinden sich in räumlicher Nähe zu Schutzgebieten in Deutschland (Nationalpark Unteres Odertal und Naturpark Westhavelland), Namibia (Etosha Nationalpark) und Tansania (Serengeti Nationalpark). Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass bestimmte Praktiken des Weidemanagements in Deutschland Potential haben, die Nachhaltigkeit der Weidetierhaltung in Afrika zu erhöhen. In Afrika sind die Reaktionen der Wildtierzönosen auf verschiedene Weidesysteme stärker ausgeprägt als in Europa. Ein gemeinsames Phänomen in allen Fallstudien sind hohe Konflikte mit streng geschützten Wildarten. Traditionelle Praktiken des schwindenden Pastoralismus erscheinen vielversprechend um die Nachhaltigkeit der Weidehaltung auf kommunalem Land in Afrika zu erhöhen. / These comparative studies deal with the interactions between grazing cattle and wildlife. The thesis is based on the central hypothesis that strongly transformed European landscapes and less disturbed African savannas can provide each other a valuable reference. Due to parallels in the domestication history, European and African cattle function as theoretical framework of these studies. The data were collected via camera traps and interviews in four case studies. The study areas are in close vicinity to protected areas in Germany (Lower Oder Valley National Park and Westhavelland Nature Park), Namibia (Etosha National Park) and Tanzania (Serengeti National Park). The results show that certain practices of the pasture management in Germany have potential to increase the sustainability of livestock grazing in Africa. In Africa, the responses of the wildlife communities to different grazing systems are more pronounced than in Europe. A common phenomenon in all case studies is a high level of conflict with strictly protected wildlife species. The results suggest that agro-biodiversity can only be successfully protected if management strategies meet the requirements of farmers. There are several similarities between the study areas in Germany and private farmland in Namibia. Careful adaptation to the site-specific conditions is required when a grazing system developed in Europe is practiced in Africa. The results from Tanzania are an indicator of the extreme change in the landscape and pronounced human-wildlife conflicts. Especially where cattle are of high cultural value, it is necessary to sensitize people to sustainability in pasture management. Traditional practices of declining pastoralism appear promising to increase the sustainability of grazing on communal land in Africa.

Thesis (DTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2001 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dissertation aims to establish to what extent the Old Testament could be interpreted from
an African perspective, using the scapegoat sacrifice in Leviticus 16 and the Nefo'o ritual of
the Bafut of Cameroon as relevant examples. Because sacrificial practice was a normal
occurrence in the religions of the Israelites (Old Testament) and those of other nations - and
African society in particular - questions are raised that require urgent answers, namely: Is it
possible to identify any elements of sacrifice from the African background, and specifically
the Nefo'o ritual of the Bafut of Cameroon, which may facilitate the theological interpretation
and understanding of the Old Testament.
The approach employed is a qualitative methodology with the sub-category of participant
observation. We also used a socio-rhetorical interpretation approach to the Old Testament
text of Leviticus 16. When the above-mentioned two rituals are compared, they portray
aspects of both similarities and dissimilarities. The work has been divided into the following
seven chapters:
Chapter one introduces the topic through the identification and the development of the
problem. Some concepts and keywords from the title are discussed in the contexts of the
Bafut of Cameroon and ancient Israel.
Chapter two provides the background to the Nefo'o ritual of the Bafut of Cameroon, tracing
both the origins of the Bafut people and the Nefo'o ritual. The Bukari people, the aborigines
of the tribe and the seat of the Nefo'o shrine are highlighted.
Chapter three presents a survey of sacrifices in West Africa, the ancient Near East and Israel.
Special attention is reserved to the sacrificial systems of the ancient Israelites.
Chapter four gives a brief introduction to the Pentateuch with special treatment of the modern
trends in the study of the pentateuchal sources and the theologies of the authors. This is to
situate the book of Leviticus in the Pentateuch with which we are concerned.
Chapter five presents an introduction to the book of Leviticus and examines its significance
among the other pentateuchal books. Attention is given to certain recurrent theological
themes in the book and its implication for Leviticus chapter 16.
Chapter six provides a socio-rhetorical interpretation of the text of Leviticus 16, with special
attention to the establishment of the Day of Atonement and the scapegoat sacrifice. Specific
attention was paid to the significance of atonement in Lev. 16. Chapter seven compares the scapegoat sacrifice of Leviticus 16 and the Nefo'o ritual of the
Bafut of Cameroon. This is followed by a theological interpretation of the Nefo'o ritual and a
summary of the results and conclusions.
African theologians - whose own cultures possess a great deal of ritual practices - have not
given enough attention to a contextual interpretation of the Scriptures of the Old Testament.
The biblical faith has to exist among African Traditional Religions and other cultural
practices. Some contextual interpretation of the Scriptures of the Old Testament is being
suggested. Such aspects as the Nefo'o shrine, which is situated in the midst of the Bafut
community, could be seen to explain the Tent of Meeting among the Israelites. Other aspects
include the priest, the community, the ancestors and the release of the live goat into the
woods, bearing the sins of the people. Thus the Nefo'o ritual can be used as an analogy to
explain the biblical understanding of atonement in an African context.
Leviticus 16 is not only the centre of the book of Leviticus but also the centre of the
Pentateuch (Torah). Atonement can also be seen to be the theological heart of the Old
Testament and of the whole Bible. Thus it is crucial to communicate this in an African
environment using all the hermenuetical tools available. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie dissertasie is daarop gemik om te bepaal tot watter mate die Ou Testament vanuit In
Afrika-perspektief geinterpreteer kan word met gebruikmaking van die sondebokofferande,
soos beskryf in Levitikus 16 en die Nefo'o ritueel van die Bafut bevolking van Kameroen as
betrokke voorbeelde. Omdat die bring van offerandes normale praktyk in die godsdienste van
die Israeliete (soos beskryf in die Ou Testament) en van ander nasies - en spesifiek van
Afrika-gemeenskappe - is, ontlok dit vrae wat dringend beantwoord behoort te word. Is dit

herhalende teologiese temas in die boek en die implikasies daarvan vir Levitikus 16. Hoofstuk ses bevat 'n sosio-retoriese interpretasie van die inhoud van Levitikus 16, met
spesiale verwysing na die instelling van die Versoendag en die offerande van die sondebok.
Spesifieke aandag word geskenk aan die rol van boetedoening in Levitikus 16.
Hoofstuk sewe vergelyk die sondebok offerande van Levitikus 16 en die Nefo'o ritueel van

Challenging messianism and apocalyptism : a study of the three surviving Messiahs, their related commonalities, problematic issues and the beliefs surrounding themKrawitz, Lilian 11 1900 (has links)
The thesis is concerned with two issues, modern messiahs and their appeal, namely the highly successful Rebbe M.M. Schneerson from Chabad; and hostile, modern day, militant messianists and their beliefs, namely the USA Christian evangelicals and their rapture belief. The study directs attention at the three successful (in the sense that their movements survived their deaths) Jewish Messiahs, the 1st century Jesus, the 17th century Sabbatai Sevi and the present day, but recently deceased (1994) Rebbe Schneerson. The focus in the study falls on the latter two Jewish Messiahs, especially Rebbe Schneerson and Chabad, from Crown Heights, New York, whose messianic beliefs and conduct the thesis has been able to follow in real time. The thesis argues that Rebbe Schneerson and Chabad‟s extreme messianic beliefs and praxis, and the marked similarities that exist between all three Jewish Messiahs and their followers indicate that Chabad will probably, over time, become another religion removed from Judaism.
The thesis notes that the three Jewish Messiahs share a similar messiah template, the “„suffering servant‟ messiah” template. The thesis argues that this template is related to the wide appeal and success of these three Jewish messiahs, as it offers their followers the option of vicarious atonement which relieves people from dealing with their own transgressions and permits people to evade the demanding task of assuming personal accountability for all their actions, including their transgressions.
The recommendations in this thesis are prompted by the “wall of deafening silence” which is the result of political correctness and the “hands off religion” position, that prevents debate or censure of hostile militant messianism, despite the inherent dangers and high cost attached to the praxis of hostile, militant messianism and militant messianists‟ belief in exclusive apocalyptic scenarios, in modern, multicultural and democratic societies. The thesis argues this situation is not tenable and that it needs to be addressed, especially where modern day, hostile, militant messianists, unlike their predecessors at Qumran, now have access to the military and to military hardware, including nuclear warheads, and are able to hasten the End Times should they simply choose to do so. / Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern Studies / D. Spirited teaching : the integration of faith and learning in the teaching of Bible in British Columbia Christian schoolsCampbell, Johanna 11 1900 (has links)
The integration of faith and learning has been the object of study of men and women in the Canadian Calvinistic school movement ever since Dr. Abraham Kuyper pointed out that there could be no dichotomy between the sacred and the secular in the life of a Christian. Acting on the traditions, influences and beliefs these `Reformed' Christians had imbibed in their homeland, the Dutch Calvinistic immigrants who came to British Columbia after WW II built Christian schools as soon as they arrived. As they became more established, they formed curriculum committees of teachers who wrote curriculum for each subject area from a Christian perspective, intentionally planning to integrate their faith and learning in all subject areas.
By looking at the history and Bible textbooks of not only the Calvinistic (Reformed) Christian day schools in British Columbia and then branching out to the history and Bible textbooks of three other denominational schools, the Mennonite, the Pentecostal and the Lutheran, I have tried to discover how the faith beliefs of each of these groups are brought to bear on the teaching of Bible. In soliciting the strengths of each of these groups from their history, current practise and teacher comments, I have pitched my own proposal as to how the integration of faith and learning can be enhanced in the teaching of Bible.
By blending goals, curricula and best practice, as well combining certain faith belief frameworks in interpreting God's Word, by learning in community, and by listening to the Holy Spirit in the text, I believe the teaching of Bible can become `Spirited teaching'. / Religious Studies and Arabic / D.Th.

The French Benedictine monk Henri Le Saux (Abhishikt.ananda) sought to establish an
Indian Christian monasticism, emphasizing Hindu ad1•aitic experience. He understood advaita
as both nondual and non-monistic. Using phenomenology and comparative philosophy. this
thesis explores his understanding and experience of advaita, comparing it to both traditional
Hinduism and neo-Vedanta, as well as to Christianity and Zen Buddhism. Abhishiktananda's
description of his experience is examined in relation to perception, thinking, action. ontology and
theology. Special attention is given Lo comparing the views of the Hindu sages RamaQa
Maharshi and Gnanananda, both of whom influenced Abbishiktananda.
Abhishiktananda believed that advaita must be directly experienced; this experience is
beyond all words and concepts. He compares Christian apophatic mysticism and Hindu
sannyiisa. This thesis examines his distinction between experience and thought in relation to
recent philosophical discussions.
Abhishiktananda radically reinterprets Christianity. His affirmation of both nonduality
and non-monism was influenced by Christian Trinitarianism, interpreted as an emanation of the
Many from the One. Jesus' experience of Sonship with the Father is an advaitic experience that
is equally available to everyone. Abhishiktananda believes that the early Upanishads report a
similar experience. A monistic interpretation of advaita only developed later with the
"dialectics" of Shankara's disciples. In non-monistic advaita, the world is not an illusion. Using
ideas derived from tantra and Kashmir Saivism, Abhishiktananda interprets mayii as the .fakti or
power of Shiva. He compares .fakti to the Holy Spirit.
Abhishiktananda distinguishes between a pure consciousness experience (nirvikalpa or
kel•ala samudhi) and a return to the world of diversity in sahaja samiidhi. Ramar:ta and
Gnanananda make a similar distinction. Sahaja samadhi is the state of the jf11anmukti, the one
who is liberated while still in the body; it is an experience that is referred to in tantra and in
Kashmir Saivi.\'m . Abhishiktananda never experienced nin•ikalpa samiidhi, but he did experience
sahaja sam&lhi.
The appendix provides one possible synthesis of Abhishiktananda's understanding of

In this investigation key elements of the mysticism of Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906) are compared and contrasted with the mysticism of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and as a result, the true nature of the relationship between their respective mysticism is elucidated. Key doctrines which exhibit a remarkable consonance are: the trinitarian foundation of their mysticism, the indwelling of the Trinity in the human soul, asceticism, desert spirituality, sacrificial love, liturgical spirituality, scriptural spirituality, deification and the doxological nature of their mysticism. Elements of divergence exist within the following: election and predestination, apophatic versus cataphatic mysticism, the Roman Catholic dogma of the immaculate conception of the virgin Mary, and the mode of God's presence in the human soul. Text in Afrikaans / Social security is an important instrument of government to reduce the risks of economic
insecurity to indivi~uals and the community. Social security usually consists of social insurance
(for example pensions, unemployment insurance and workmen's compensation) and social
assistance (for example social pensions, disability grants and maintenance grants). In view of
South Africa's low economic growth, high and rising unemployment, widespread poverty, skew
distribution of income and the disintegration of the family, social security requires urgent
attention. This issue is even more pressing during the political transition since most policy
measures and institutions are reconsidered, while pressure on government expenditure increases.
This study commences with a discussion of basic aspects of social security, such as its definition,
the rationale for social security in a market economy, the possible influence on economic
behaviour, targeting, the financing of social security through a payroll tax and general taxation
and the financing of a national pension fund.
One of the sources of information of social security is the experience of other countries in this
regard. The second part, which constitutes the core of the study, involves a comparative study of
social security. After a general discussion on comparative studies, the origin and development of
social security in welfare states (the USA, Britain and the Netherlands) and developing countries
(Chile, Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and Sri Lanka) are studied. African countries and the
"miracle" countries of the East also receive brief attention. The main emphasis is on equity and
efficiency, and aspects such as affordability, financing, targeting, the extension of coverage, a
negative income tax, traditional social security and specific programmes that could be of
importance to South Africa.
In the last section the origin and development of and the fiscal scope for social security are
discussed. Besides social insurance and assistance, programmes such as in-kind transfers, public
works programmes and tax expenditure receive attention. Aspects of social security such as
poverty alleviation, means testing, take-up rates, administration and corruption are discussed,
while recommendations are made on topics such as a "voluntarily" national pension scheme,
employment creation programmes and food stamps. / Bestaansbeveiliging is 'n belangrike instrument in die hande van die owerheid om die risiko' s van
ekonomiese onsekerheid vir individue en die gemeenskap te verminder. Bestaansbeveiliging
bestaan gewoonlik uit maatskaplike versekering (waaronder pensioene, werkloosheidsversekering
en ongevalleversekering) en maatskaplike bystand (byvoorbeeld maatskaplike pensioene,
ongeskiktheidstoelaes en onderhoudstoelaes). In die lig van Suid-Afrika se lae ekonomiese groei,
hoe en stygende werkloosheid, wydverspreide armoede, skewe verdeling van inkome en
gesinsverbrokkeling, verg bestaansbeveiliging dringende aandag. Die aangeleentheid is des te
dringender gedurende die politieke oorgangsperiode waartydens die meeste beleidsmaatreels en
instellings in heroorweging geneem word en daar voortdurend druk op die owerheid is om meer
van die land se skaars bronne te gebruik.
Ter inleiding word enkele kemaspekte van bestaansbeveiliging bespreek, waaronder die definisie
daarvan, die rasionaal vir bestaansbeveiliging in 'n markekonomie, die moontlike invloed van
bestaansbeveiliging op ekonomiese gedrag, die rol van teikenstelling, die finansiering van
bestaansbeveiliging deur middel van 'n loonstaatbelasting en algemene belastings en die
finansiering van 'n nasionale pensioenfonds.
Een bron van inligting oar bestaansbeveiliging is die ervaring van ander lande op hierdie terrein.
Die tweede gedeelte, wat die kern van die studie is, behels 'n vergelykende studie van
bestaansbeveiliging. Na 'n inleidende bespreking oar vergelykende studies in die algemeen, word
die ontstaan en ontwikkeling van bestaansbeveiliging in welvaartstate (die VSA, Brittanje en
Nederland) en in ontwikkelende lande (Chili, Mexiko, Guatemala, Kuba en Sri Lanka) bestudeer.
Afrikalande en die "mirakel-lande" van die Coste kry oorsigtelik aandag. Die nadruk in die
gedeelte val veral op billikheid en doeltreffendheid en aspekte soos bekostigbaarheid,
finansiering, teikenstelling, uitbreiding van dekking, negatiewe inkomstebelasting, tradisionele
bestaansbeveiliging en programme wat vir Suid-Afrika van betekenis kan wees.
In die laaste gedeelte word die ontstaan en ontwikkeling van en die fiskale ruimte vir
bestaansbeveiliging in Suid-Afrika bespreek. Benewens maatskaplike versekering en bystand, kry
programme soos in natura oordragte, openbare werke-programme (werkskeppingsprogramme) en
belastinguitgawes aandag. Aspekte van bestaansbeveiliging soos armoedeverligting, die
middeletoets, opneemkoerse, administrasie en korrupsie word bespreek en aanbevelings word
onder me er gemaak ten opsigte van 'n "vrywillige" nasionale pensioenskema,
