A study of a preschool´s work to counteract traditional genderroles, from an intersectional perspective

Lowejko, Linnea January 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine a preschool's work to counteract traditional gender roles, which strategies are used and how norms about gender roles are produced and treated. The study also examines whether the preschool has an intersectional perspective in it's gender work, which analyzes how they relate to other categories such as ethnicity, race, class, age and sexuality in their work. I have been observing and conducting four interviews with teachers at a preschool with a gender profile. In my analysis I have used Foucault's theories about discourse and power. The results show that the informants had a high awareness of gender and that the main strategies used were: an individual perspective, seeing the individual and not the sex, and a gender-neutral strategy, removing everything that is gendered, for example, in language and environment. The preschool's work implementing the equal treatment plan (Likabehandlingsplan) allowed them to replace their gender profile, which included discrimination based on forms of ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression and age. The results showed some examples of an intersectional perspective, for example, how the preschool worked with sexuality/different family structures and age, but other categories were harder to include, such as ethnicity, race and class. The conclusions I have drawn are that there are risks with these gender strategies. They confirm and reinforce gender roles, and there is a risk that the work is based on a white middle-class heterosexual norm, which means it is based on privileged positions. The work with the equal treatment plan requires an intersectional perspective and a self-reflected approach from the teachers.

The use of voice recognition software as a compensatory strategy for postsecondary education students receiving services under the category of learning disabled

Roberts, Kelly Drew 08 1900 (has links)
This study expands on the current literature base that investigates the use of voice recognition software (VRS) as a compensatory strategy for written language difficulties often experienced by postsecondary education students receiving services under the category of learning disabled. The current literature base is limited to one study (Higgins & Raskind, 1995) which found that subjects' writing samples, completed with VRS, had higher holistic scores than the samples completed with a transcriber, and without assistance. While these findings are positive many questions remain unanswered. The research conducted in this dissertation investigated three such questions. The questions and corresponding findings follow. 1. After being trained on VRS will persons, in postsecondary education, receiving services under the category of learning disabled, continue to use it to complete their academic course work? Will they further use the software for purposes other than academic study? Two individuals continued to use the software. One of these two used the software for multiple purposes. 2. Does the ongoing use of VRS, by postsecondary education students receiving services under the category of learning disabled, improve their written performance when assessed with Fry's Readability Graph? Two subjects each submitted three writing samples: one completed without the use of VRS and two completed using VRS. One subject's grade level equivalency went from 4.5 (sample completed without using VRS) to 6.5 (samples completed using VRS). There was no change in the grade level equivalency of the writing samples for the second subject. 3. What are the contributing variables that influence the continued use, or non-use, of VRS by postsecondary education students receiving services under the category of learning disabled? Numerous variables emerged from the data including: time, access to a personal computer, ease of use, personal issues, use of standard English, the specific limitations associated with a persons disability, whether or not the subjects had other compensatory strategies in place, and the acquisition of the skills necessary to use the software. The findings contribute to the field by providing a framework from which to assess who mayor may not benefit from the use of VRS.

La gesticulación como estrategia compensatoria : Una propuesta para efectivizar la enseñanza de verbos reflexivos en el nivel A1 para la clase de ELE en un contexto escolar sueco / Gesticulation as a compensatory strategy : A proposal to make teaching reflexive verbs effective at level A1 for the ELE class in a Swedish school context

González, Águeda January 2020 (has links)
This study investigates the importance of non-verbal communication (CNV) in learning foreign languages. In relation to learning and teaching routine verbs, we identified a possible problem that arose when, during the teaching of certain grammatical moments, these were introduced exclusively linguistically. The objective of this dissertation is therefore to analyze and describe how the use of gesturing as a non-linguistic teaching strategy in the Swedish school classroom could favor learning Spanish for foreigners (ELE); since this type of nonverbal communication is common among Spanish speakers and is part of the cultural context of the target language. Our study was initiated after the observation made during the pedagogical practices that took place in Sweden, a country where the CNV is present in the curricular plans. Based on the field observations, it became possible to verify that when the teacher faced problems associated with comprehension and communicative fluency, she usually turned to the mother tongue immediately when a comprehension problem arose (Skolinspektion, 2010). These types of deficiencies could be solved through the use of illustrative body gestures (Cestero, 2017), as a compensatory strategy understood as a type of learning technique that solves a communication problem (Rodríguez Ruiz and Merás García, 2005). Six groups of students belonging to four Swedish schools have collaborated in our study in addition to the respective teachers of each group. Surveys were also carried out with some students and interviews with part of the teaching team. Finally, the results obtained show how the learning of reflexive verbs is more effective when the CNV is used as a didactic strategy in the ELE classroom, also improving the teaching-learning process.
