Considérations sur la France de Joseph de Maistre: revisão (historiográfica) e tradução / Considérations sur la France of Joseph de Maistre: revision (historical) and translation

Soares, José Miguel Nanni 24 August 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to present a historical revision of Joseph de Maistres Considérations sur la France (1797), which represents a pioneering attempt of historical interpretation of the revolutionary phaenomenon in French language and from the point of view of the counter-revolution. In doing so, we intend to offer a panoramic view of the use made of Joseph de Maistres most famous pamphlet in the historiography of the French Revolution. It also provides a brief intellectual biography of the savoyard which tries to underline the complexity of the Maistrean reaction to the Enlightenment and the Revolution - marked by an eccentric interaction with certain currents of jesuitism, iluminism and the Enlightenment. Last but not least, we present a translation of the pamphlet, heretofore neglected in Portuguese.

Ortodoxia em dois tempos: do clericalismo político à secularização estatal / Orthodoxy in two periods: from the political clericalism to the state secularization

Costa, Guilherme Borges Ferreira 10 October 2014 (has links)
The subject of the forthcoming research is the social influence of conservative Catholicism within the Church in Brazil and, beyond clerical limits, also in the national legal and political system. The idea is to analyze Catholic conservatisms prestige and its potential ability to persuade, both with regard to institutional ecclesiastical ranks, as well as the state sectors. As a starting point, the research observes several of the clergys resistances that occur in reaction to the official release of the 3rd National Human Rights Program in late 2009. The research specifically focuses on these resistances. The observation of a unique history, in which these processes appear coated with new features, not to mention a new character when compared with other situations of church-state relations in our country, is the basis for the choice of this well-defined series of tense events, events that produce speeches equally tense.

O conservadorismo de Michael Oakeshott: uma análise do ensaio On Being Conservative / The conservatism of Michael Oakeshott: an analysis of the essay On Being Conservative

The study objective was to analyze how conservatism is expressed in the author´s ideas, starting from a brief analysis from what constituted conservative thinking in general, following through how the way that conservative principles appear in the Oakeshott work. It is about a bibliographical review that intends to understand and present the main elements of conservative thinking based on the approach of an author who has been read and divulged in Brazil, because it was able to show that psychologically human beings express conservative dispositions that could, in their view, justify a specific type of political conservatism: to broaden liberalism in the economy, keeping, however, conservative values and traditions in terms of customs and behaviors, that is, a posture that can be defined as liberal conservatism.

These people were picked according to the population dynamics of their cities and the consolidation degree of the work with families under social assistancein the first chapter; we go on social-historical meanings of the conservatism and its impact on the profession of Social Work.In the second chapter, we situate the context in which they develop social policies nowadays and we cover the main features of social assistance policy in Brazil today. In the third chapter, we analyze the data collected. As a part of the research results, we figured that: 1. 1 There are positive changes in ways of understanding who are the families that seek for social assistance, but stigmas and prejudices on these people are still shown in professional execution; 2 - the way professionals look upon the people that make use of the social assistance and the possibilities of facing social is influenced by conservative tendencies as the politicization of the meaning of poverty; 3 families are disciplined to keep a satisfactory performance during their participation on the income transfers programs; 4 The social work with families through the Protection Service and Integral Care of Family (PAIF) is presented as an attempt to break in with conservative practices in this sphere of professional activity and some (as) professionals take ownership of these service proposals to face the effects of the conservatism of the professional; 5 families are educated to achieve autonomy, which revealed the positive aspects in the sense of deconstruct welfare practices and to give poor families access to their rights and the policies and public services, as well as claiming their improvement. However, the survey also showed a tendency to individualize problems that are social responsibility and, increasingly, families for their poverty condition / A investigação das expressões do conservadorismo no trabalho com famílias executado por assistentes sociais na contemporaneidade constitui o foco da presente pesquisa.

Gonçalves, Leandro Pereira 19 November 2012 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-27T19:30:41Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Leandro Pereira Goncalves.pdf: 3857211 bytes, checksum: 2115a9dc4bc60857b07d75c4602aba24 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-19 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This thesis aims to investigate the trajectory of Plínio Salgado for the formation and development of Brazilian integralism in its various stages, seeking multiple discursive matrices and cultural circularity in the field of appropriation, observing the process of cultural circularity in dealing with Lusitanian components. The analysis has established discussions with reference to bibliographical productions such as doctrinal, political, literary and religious, as well as manifestos, interviews and testimonials, that is, bibliographical elements that contributed to the understanding of Brazilian integralism, especially with regard to the leader Plínio Salgado, who was the main mentor of the movement. On the basis of the concept of political culture, the investigation has proposed the analysis of evolutionary thought of the integralist leader by focusing on the context of Lusitanian influence and basically Catholic, precept that accompanied him throughout his life. The research has been organized based on the understanding of the author's works since his first productions from the 1910s to his last writings in 1975. Belonging to a traditional and conservative family from the interior of the state of São Paulo, he was born in 1895 in the city of São Bento do Sapucaí. Still as a young man, he went to São Paulo where he excelled intellectually in the 1920s so as to subsequently form, in the following decade, the first mass movement in Brazil, the Brazilian Integralist Action. With multiple matrices, Salgado had the purpose of constructing an original political doctrine. However, the circularity of ideas of the period made the Head suffer considerable influences on the formation of his thought, having in Portugal the doctrinal example, Lusitanian Integralism: a movement with a nationalist character of the radical right wing that had visible formation based on the precursor of conservatism, the Action Française, which, as well as all the political groups of the early twentieth century, established a practical response to the theory given by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 through the encyclical Rerum Novarum. After the Lusitanian influence on the formation of Plínio s thought and idealization of integralism, once again Portugal was a highlight in the doctrinal organization of the author, when he was exiled between 1939 and 1946, a period of time which he used to reorder his thought, actions and political articulations, keeping Catholic spiritualism as a central force. With the end of the period of Vargas dictatorship, he returned to Brazil and declared himself to be Luso-Brazilian, becoming a supreme supporter of the politics of António de Oliveira Salazar, an image that he followed until the end of his life. One of the proposals of the thesis lies in the approach to the integralist movement from a multiplicity of perspectives, but predominantly in a comparative analysis with Portugal. The current thesis has searched for the verification of political actions so as to contribute to a better understanding of the relation between Portugal and Brazil, through the analysis of the radical conservatism enlarging this focus on the Portuguese right wing. The Christian political thought of the author holds a significant importance to the Political History of the 20th century, not only for Brazil, due to the fact that his actions and dialogues established with Lusitanian groups have been fundamental to the comprehension of the political matters of the two countries / Esta tese tem como objetivo a investigação da trajetória de Plínio Salgado para a formação e o desenvolvimento do integralismo brasileiro em suas mais variadas fases, buscando as múltiplas matrizes discursivas e a circularidade cultural no campo das apropriações, observando o processo de circularidade cultural no trato com os componentes lusitanos.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elisa Silva Vidal.pdf: 851181 bytes, checksum: ca9fb6943777b8e6b9a505c16f1c50b9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-03-11 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The conservatism manifests itself in a timely manner in the brazilian contemporaneity and ideologically marks the discourse, actions and values perpetuated by religious institutions. Therefore, this research, based on the Marx’s social theory, aims to bring elements to analyze the representativeness of the conservative values in the everyday life of young people bound to different religions. For this purpose, we made a bibliographic research and subsequently a field research, where we applied semi-structured interviews with four youth – two evangelicals, one catholic and one umbandista – which considerer the religion as part of their life. This is therefore a modern theme, important for the apprehension of the young’s reality who adhere to the religions of the Brazilian conjuncture, aiming to contribute for the understanding of the values, expectations and life references of a population which is part of the professional activity of Social Service. In this perspective, this paper is of big relevance because it approaches a rarely considered subject on Social Sciences and it brings to the academy questions that help the understanding of the relation between conservatism, youth and religion / O conservadorismo se manifesta de maneira pontual na contemporaneidade brasileira e ideologicamente marca o discurso, ações e valores perpetuados pelas instituições religiosas.

Vidal, Camila Feix January 2016 (has links)
The work exposed here is dedicated to the study and to a greater understanding of the North-American politics. More specifically, intends to study the suposedly recent party polarization and Republican conservative ascendancy. Treated as a fact by the specialized literature, the study here done treats these two phenomena as hypothesis to be tested. As such, through a greater understanding of ideologies such as Conservatism and Liberalism in the context of the United States, as well as a methodology that favors the use of national platforms as an indicative of party ideological portrait; this work seeks to empirically evidence points of similiarities and differences between the political parties and, as a consequence, the ascent or decline of ideologies such as Conservatism in reference to the Republican Party. Through indicators of gradation, wordtree and word frequency from the national platforms of the two political parties (Democratic and Republican) between 1936 and 2012; this work seeks to evidence in a more empirical way these two phenomena. The results show us that, indeed, there is a party polarization in the recent period; nevertheless, this is not the only one in the history of this country. In the same way, it can be perceived that there is a conservative ascendancy by the Republican Party, especially when dealing with some categories of analysis such as social policies.

The return to Darwin in the contemporary British novel : an evolutionary response to postmodernism and social constructivism

Abdulwahab, Hussain January 2018 (has links)
Arguably, the impact of Darwinism on the novel is an indispensable part of the study of English literature. However, with regard to such literary study there is an ongoing aversion towards approaching Darwin outside the confines of his contemporaneous Victorian setting. This thesis explores what remains an extremely under-represented area of current scholarship; namely, the active status of Darwinism as an influence upon contemporary novelists. To address this gap, this study starts by conducting textual and comparative analyses of a representative selection of contemporary British novels, a literary field that, since 1990, has featured significant authors who have found in Darwin a source of intellectual and literary inspiration. The aim is to argue that Darwin's classic texts, and more recent incarnations of his theory such as Sociobiology, are deployed as a materialist discourse, used to subvert various problematic assumptions in the declining Postmodernist philosophy, the previously dominant theoretical paradigm. For novelists including Ian McEwan, A.S. Byatt and Jenny Diski, Darwinism provides the tools to define human nature in an oppositional manner to the Social Constructivism which reduces the human to a blank slate ready for society's dictation. A universal human nature can be seen manifested in biological phenomena including competition, altruism, reproduction and aggression. The treacherous territory of biological determinism is still present, yet the desire to experiment is carried forward by McEwan in Enduring Love and Saturday into the realm of challenging traditional religion. In a more nuanced manner, Jim Crace's Being Dead manages to create a wholly naturalistic narrative of death. Finally, reinstating alterative meta-narratives is a practice that comes fully into its own in contemporary renditions of history. Byatt's Neo-Victorian novels, Possession and Morpho Eugenia, exhibit faith in knowing the past as if it were an evolutionary process of accumulated changes. Moreover, Diski's serio-ironic Monkey's Uncle is focused on how the present is haunted by the past in the form of immortal DNA coils. This study analyses the texts in a manner suggesting a paradigm shift in literary scholarship, where Darwin is no longer seen as simply an ideological threat. As the sciences continue to become more hermeneutically enigmatic, and as literature seems embedded in an elitist Postmodernist trajectory, there is now huge democratic potential in the New Darwinian Novel which invites the everyman of today to participate in the controversies of both disciplines.

Educator to the nation : George S. Benson and modern American conservatism

Maxwell, Robbie John January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the career of American conservative activist George S. Benson (1898-1991), who served as President of the Church of Christ–affiliated Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas (1936-1965) and rose to national prominence in the early 1940s, when he established the National Education Program. This examination provides an interpretation of the nature, origins and influence of modern U.S. conservatism. By focusing on the period from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, this work builds on a number of recent studies that have demonstrated the significant advantages to exploring modern conservatism beyond the social and political tumults of the 1960s and 1970s. Benson’s efforts also reveal some flaws in the analytical paradigm that dominates the literature on the modern right: the transition between conservatism’s marginalization in the 1930s and its recapture of the political mainstream by the late 1970s. Tempering this ‘rise of the right’ narrative by accepting both the importance and incompleteness of this resurgence provides the basis for the more nuanced approach that defines this work. Benson’s efforts to promote conservatism were defined – perhaps in equal measure – by failures, successes, and innovations. As a result, his career provides a new perspective on the boundaries of modern conservatism. Much of the work on conservatism focuses on either elites or grassroots activists. Benson operated within a space between these two groups that has rarely been explored. His career relied, almost exclusively, on the financial support of conservative businessmen, who shared his desire to effect a political re-education of the American public. To do this, Benson utilized a remarkable range of outlets for his message, which included a newspaper column, a radio broadcast, a relentless speaking schedule, and the production of approximately fifty films. He also made pioneering efforts to increase the influence of conservatism within the education system. Benson’s appeal to businessmen also resided in his construction of an innovative discourse for communicating the virtues of unfettered corporate capitalism and challenging its critics. Drawing on his own youthful experiences in Oklahoma, one of the last ‘frontier’ outposts, as well as the mythology of frontier individualism and the discourse of populism, Benson offered a folksy rebuke of ‘big government’ and embraced the corporate world as the heir to these virtues (despite the obvious contradictions). Benson’s faith ensured that religion became the second pillar of his ‘Americanism.’ His economic outlook constituted a prescient departure from Church of Christ traditions that, like those of many Southern fundamentalist and evangelical groups, harbored long-standing concerns that economic modernity constituted a destabilizing and amoral influence over a society that required order, stability and a primary dedication to non-worldly ideals. Moreover, Benson offers a new insight into the confluence of the traditionalist and libertarian wings of the right, a defining feature of the modern conservative movement. Benson’s political vision resonated most profoundly in the South and Southwest, where the heartland of modern conservatism emerged from a collision between the region’s remarkable postwar economic transformation and its preexisting religious and political culture. In a more general sense, certain themes within Benson’s crusade, notably including the power and influence of organized labor, provided key successes for the right during these years. These successes were testament to the importance of favorable circumstances, but Benson’s career was defined by the conviction that a more effective communication of conservatism would solve the right’s problems throughout the nation; one key argument of this work is that the message itself had notable limitations. These limitations, in turn, reveal a more profound ambiguity towards conservatives’ economic message within American political culture, the shortcomings of religious conservatism, and the problematic and incomplete nature of Benson’s efforts to ‘fuse’ economic and social conservatism. On the other hand, that conservatives’ ambitions were not met during this period does not suggest that Benson operated in an era of political comity; in one important respect, conservatives such as Benson helped to constrain political discourse and ensure the persistent moderation of their opponents.

Considérations sur la France de Joseph de Maistre: revisão (historiográfica) e tradução / Considérations sur la France of Joseph de Maistre: revision (historical) and translation

José Miguel Nanni Soares 24 August 2009 (has links)
