A three-dimensional heat and mass transport model for a tree within a forest

A three-dimensional computational tool was developed that simulates the heat and mass transfer interaction in a soil-root-stem system (SRSS) for a tree in a seasonally varying deciduous forest. The development of the SRSS model involved the modification and coupling of existing heat and mass transport tools to reproduce the three-dimensional diurnal internal and external temperatures, internal fluid distribution, and heat flow in the soil, roots, and stems. The model also required the development of a parallel Monte-Carlo algorithm to simulate the solar and environmental radiation regime consisting of sky and forest radiative effects surrounding the tree. The SRSS was tested, component-wise verified, and quantitatively compared with published observations. The SRSS was applied to simulate a tree in a dense temperate hardwood forest that included the calculations of surface heat flux and comparisons between cases with fluid flow transport and periods of zero flow. Results from the winter simulations indicate that the primary influence of temperature in the trunk is solar radiation and radiative energy from the soil and surrounding trees. Results from the summer simulation differed with previous results, indicating that sap flow in the trunk altered the internal temperature change with secondary effects attributed to the radiative energy from the soil and surrounding trees. Summer simulation results also showed that with sap flow, as the soil around the roots become unsaturated, the flow path for the roots will be changed to areas where the soil is still saturated with a corresponding increase in fluid velocity.

Study of The Effect of Convective Heat Transfer on Cooling of Overhead Line Conductors Based on Wind Tunnel Experimental Results / Studie av Effekten av Konvektiv Värmeöverföring vid Kylning av Ledningsledare Baserat på Experimentellt Resultat från Vindtunneln

It is important to keep an overhead power line within rated operating conditions. Thus,an accurate prediction of the conductor's thermal and electrical behavior leads to an increasein reliability and eciency. Under DLR operation, the current rating is adjustedbased on ambient weather and solar conditions to allow for dynamic line loading. Therating adjustment takes into account the cooling mechanisms acting on the conductor. Inthis thesis, cooling by means of convective heat transfer is studied based on wind tunnelexperimental measurements of three dierent conductor samples. Convection contributesto most of the cooling; however, it is aected by wind speed and direction. Two angle ofattacks were studied (40 and 90), where perpendicular ow was found to result in bettercooling. The location of boundary layer separation highly aects the surface distribution ofcooling, which is non-uniform. Oblique wind ow results in reduction in overall cooling dueto earlier boundary layer separation. Finally, the surface average convective heat transfercoecient correlates non-linearly with the Reynolds number, where higher wind speeds andlarger conductor diameters can lead to signicant improvements in cooling while keepingrelatively low current densities. The existing standards of IEEE and CIGRE were found tooverestimate the eect of convective cooling for the specic experimental cases. / Det är viktigt att hålla en kraftöverföringsledning inom nominella driftsförhållanden.Således leder en korrekt förutsägelse av ledarens termiska och elektriska beteende till en ökad tillförlitlighet och effektivitet. Under DLR-drift justeras nuvärdet baserat på omgivande väder och solförhållanden för att möjliggöra dynamisk belastning. Klassificeringsjusteringen tar hänsyn till de kylmekanismer som verkar på ledaren. I denna avhandling studeras kylning med hjälp av konvektiv värmeöverföring baserat på provning av vindtunnel av tre olika ledartyper. Konvektion bidrar till det mesta av kylningen. Det påverkas dock av vindhastighet och riktning. Två angreppsvinkelar studerades (40◦ och 90◦), där vinkelrätt flöde befanns resultera i bättre kylning. Placeringen av ytskiktseparationen har stor inverkan på ytfördelningen av kylning, vilken är ojämn. Skrå vindflöde resulterar i minskning av den totala kylningen på grund av tidigare separering av gränsskiktet. Slutligen korrelerar den ytvärdesöverföringskoefficienten för ytvärdet icke-linjärt med Reynolds-talet, där högre vindhastigheter och större ledardiametrar kan leda till signifikanta förbättringar i kylning samtidigt som relativt låga strömtäthet hålls. De befintliga standarderna för IEEE och CIGRE visade sig överskatta effekten av konvektiv kylning för de specifika experimentellafallen.

Direct numerical simulations of the rotating-disk boundary-layer flow

This thesis deals with the instabilities of the incompressible boundary-layer flow that is induced by a disk rotating in otherwise still fluid. The results presented are mostly limited to linear instabilities derived from direct numerical simulations (DNS) but with the objective that further work will focus on the nonlinear regime, providing greater insights into the transition route to turbulence. The numerical code Nek5000 has been chosen for the DNS using a spectral-element method in an effort to reduce spurious effects from low-order discretizations. Large-scale parallel simulations have been used to obtain the present results. The known similarity solution of the Navier–Stokes equation for the rotating-disk flow, also called the von Karman flow, is investigated and can be reproduced with good accuracy by the DNS. With the addition of small roughnesses on the disk surface, convective instabilities appear and data from the DNS are analysed and compared with experimental and theoretical data. A theoretical analysis is also presented using a local linear-stability approach, where two stability solvers have been developedbased on earlier work. A good correspondence between DNS and theory is found and the DNS results are found to explain well the behaviour of the experimental boundary layer within the range of Reynolds numbers for small amplitude (linear) disturbances. The comparison between the DNS and experimental results, presented for the first time here, shows that the DNS allows (for large azimuthal domains) a range of unstable azimuthal wavenumbers β to exist simultaneously with the dominantβ varying, which is not accounted for in local theory, where β is usually fixed for each Reynolds number at which the stability analysis is applied. Furthermore, the linear impulse response of the rotating-disk boundary layer is investigated using DNS. The local response is known to be absolutely unstable. The global response is found to be stable if the edge of the disk is assumed to be at infinity, and unstable if the domain is finite and the edge of the domain is placed such that there is a large enough pocket region for the absolute instability to develop. The global frequency of the flow is found to be determined by the edge Reynolds number. / <p>QC 20140708</p>

La valorisation de l'énergie thermique contenue dans des gaz chauds pour produire de l'électricité est possible grâce à l'utilisation de cycles thermodynamiques, parmi lesquels le cycle de Rankine mérite d'être considéré. Cependant, l'industrialisation d'un tel système passe par une connaissance approfondie du comportement thermohydraulique du fluide actif. Ceci permettra d'améliorer le design des principaux composants du système, spécialement les échangeurs de chaleur. Dans le cas du cycle organique de Rankine, les conditions thermodynamiques du fluide sont éloignées des conditions usuelles rencontrées dans les domaines de la climatisation ou de la réfrigération. En effet, le fluide est mis en œuvre dans des conditions proches de son point critique. La température des gaz d'échappement varie entre 400°C et 900°C et l'évaporation se produit à une température de saturation supérieure à 100°C. En ce qui concerne les caractéristiques des écoulements diphasiques (chute de pression, coefficient de transferts thermiques, régimes d'écoulement), la quasi-totalité des méthodes de prédiction a été développée pour des températures comprises entre -20°C et 40°C correspondantes aux domaines de la climatisation ou de la réfrigération. C'est pourquoi la fiabilité de ces modèles reste incertaine dans les conditions d'évaporation du cycle de Rankine, car leur utilisation est limitée par la base de données à partir de laquelle ils ont été établis et ne peuvent être extrapolés avec précision. Cette thèse vise à étudier les caractéristiques thermohydrauliques du R-245fa en ébullition convective dans les conditions du cycle de Rankine. Dans un premier temps, un banc expérimental a été conçu et construit afin de réaliser des tests en ébullition convective dans un minicanal de 3.00 mm de diamètre. Ce banc expérimental permet de faire des mesures sur les régimes d'écoulement, les coefficients de transfert de chaleur et les pertes de charge par frottement. Dans un second temps, une méthode de traitement d'image a été développée afin de caractériser différents régimes d'écoulement. Cette méthode couplée à une analyse des transferts thermiques a permis d'identifier quatre principaux régimes d'écoulement. L'influence de la température de saturation sur les régimes d'écoulement et leurs transitions a été soulignée et discutée. Les caractéristiques des bulles ont également été étudiées à l'aide de cette méthode. Dans un troisième temps, une base de données expérimentale sur les coefficients de transfert de chaleur a été créée. L'influence de la température de saturation sur les mécanismes de transfert thermique a été étudiée dans ces conditions originales. Afin de tester la fiabilité des méthodes de prédiction, les résultats expérimentaux ont été confrontés à différentes méthodes. Finalement, les chutes de pressions ont été mesurées et une analyse paramétrique a été menée. Les mesures ont été confrontées aux principales méthodes disponibles dans la littérature. / Because of current environmental issues, some technologies are being developed to reduce the fuel consumption and to reduce the emissions of CO2. Energy recovery by means of Organic Rankine Cycles or Hirn Cycles recovery is one investigated track to answer these issues. At present, some systems based on Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) are available in industry but advanced studies are needed to allow their application in the road transport industry. A better understanding of the two-phase fluid behaviour is necessary to optimize the design models of the components containing a two-phase refrigerant. For the Organic Rankine Cycle system, the thermodynamic conditions are different to standards relevant to refrigeration or air-conditioning systems. Indeed, the key characteristic of the ORC system is the evaporation saturation temperature. Exhaust gases temperature ranges from 400°C to 900°C and the refrigerant evaporation occurs at temperatures higher than 100°C. Almost all the flow boiling heat transfer models or correlations have been obtained for saturation temperatures ranging from -20°C to 40°C which correspond to standards relevant to refrigeration or air conditioning systems. The empirical models for boiling in such conditions are limited by the experimental data on which they are based, whereas analytical and theoretical approaches are needed to advanced knowledge on the behaviour of thermohydraulic two-phase refrigerant. This PhD thesis aims at studying the flow boiling characteristics of R-245fa in a 3.00 inner diameter channel in the thermodynamic conditions of the ORC system. Therefore, the saturation temperature ranged from 60°C to 120°C. To achieve this goal, an experimental test facility was designed and built to conduct refrigerant evaporation experiments. This test facility allowed to perform flow regime visualizations, pressure drop and heat transfer measurements in minichannel. First, an image processing method for two phase flow pattern characterization was developed. Based on this method and with the help of an adequate analysis of the heat transfer coefficient, the main flow regimes have been identified. The influence of saturation temperature on the flow patterns and their transitions has been highlighted. The second objective was to provide new experimental data concerning flow boiling heat transfer in minichannel. Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients at such high temperature have, so to say, almost never been reported in the open literature so far. The influence of saturation temperature on the heat transfer mechanisms has been discussed. In order to evaluate the capability of the current flow boiling prediction methods to predict the heat transfer coefficient, the comparison between experimental results and theoretical results predicted with the commonly used correlations and models were made. Lastly, pressure drop databases are presented. Experimental values of pressure drops were compared against several methods.

Experimental study of an intermittent ventilation system in high occupancy spaces

Spaces with high occupancy density like classrooms are challenging to ventilate and use a lot of energy to maintain comfort. Usually, a compromise is made between low energy use and good Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), of which poor IEQ has consequences for occupants’ health, productivity and comfort. Alternative strategies that incorporate elevated air speeds can reduce cooling energy demand and provide occupant’s comfort and productivity at higher operative temperatures. A ventilation strategy, Intermittent Air Jet Strategy (IAJS), which optimizes controlled intermittent airflow and creates non-uniform airflow and non-isothermal conditions, critical for sedentary operations at elevated temperatures, is proposed herein. The primary aim of the work was to investigate the potential of IAJS as a ventilation system in high occupancy spaces. Ventilation parameters such as air distribution, thermal comfort and indoor air quality are evaluated and the system is compared with a traditional system, specifically, mixing ventilation (MV). A 3-part research process was used: (1) Technical (objective) evaluation of IAJS in-comparison to MV and displacement ventilation (DV) systems. (2) An occupant response study to IAJS. (3) Estimation of the cooling effect under IAJS and its implications on energy use. All studies were conducted in controlled chambers. The results show that while MV and DV creates steady airflow conditions, IAJS has  cyclic airflow profiles which results in a sinusoidal temperature profile around occupants. Air distribution capability of IAJS is similar to MV, both having a generic local air quality index in the occupied zone. On the other hand, the systems overall air change rate was higher than a MV. Thermal comfort results suggest that IAJS generates comfortable thermal climate at higher operative temperatures compared to MV. Occupant responses to IAJS show an improved thermal sensation, air quality perception and acceptability of indoor environment at higher temperatures as compared to MV. A comparative study to estimate the cooling effect of IAJS shows that upper HVAC setpoint can be increased from 2.3 – 4.5 oC for a neutral thermal sensation compared to a MV. This implies a substantial energy saving potential on the ventilation system. In general, IAJS showed a potential for use as a ventilation system in classrooms while promising energy savings. / Lokaler där många människor vistas, som t.ex. klassrum, är ofta svåra att ventilera. Att upprätthålla en bra termisk komfort kräver en hög energianvändning. Vanligtvis blir det en kompromiss mellan låg energianvändning och bra kvalitet på inomhusmiljön (IEQ). Dålig IEQ får konsekvenser för människors hälsa, produktivitet och komfort. Alternativa ventilationsstrategier, som använder förhöjda lufthastigheter, kan minska kylbehovet och därmed energianvändningen. I denna avhandling utvärderas en ny ventilationsstrategi, Intermittenta luftstrålar (IAJS), där korta perioder med hög lufthastighet genererar en svalkande effekt, när rummets temperatur upplevs som för hög. Det primära syftet med arbetet var att undersöka potentialen hos IAJS som ett ventilationssystem för klassrum, där den termiska lasten ofta är hög. Strategin jämförs mot traditionella ventilationsprinciper som omblandande ventilation (MV) och deplacerande ventilation (DV). Parametrar som luftdistributionsindex, termisk komfort, luftkvalitet och energibesparing har utvärderats. Alla studier utfördes i klimatkammare. Resultaten visar att medan MV och DV skapar konstanta luftflödesförhållanden genererar IAJS cykliska hastighetsprofiler samt en sinusformad temperaturvariation i vistelsezonen. IAJS klarar att bibehålla ett bra termiskt klimat vid högre operativa temperaturer jämfört med MV. I en jämförelse med ett traditionellt HVAC-system visar beräkningar  att dess börvärde kan höjas från 2.3 till 4.5 °C med bibehållen termisk komfort. Detta indikerar en avsevärd energibesparingspotential vid användande av IAJS.

En la presente tesis se ha desarrollado la evaluación estructural de cinco reservorios circulares del tipo apoyado, construidos entre los años 1977 y 1997, ubicados en zonas de alto riesgo sísmico en Lima Metropolitana y ubicados en suelos medianamente rígidos, con el objetivo de evidenciar si estas estructuras continúan conservando un diseño sísmico adecuado en base a los requerimientos sísmicos actuales, y por ende si serán capaces de resistir un evento sísmico severo y continuar con el servicio. Para poder modelar y determinar la respuesta de los se reservorios se empleó el modelo equivalente de Housner, obteniendo así la masa impulsiva y convectiva, modelado en el programa SAP2000 con ayuda de las normas ACI 350.3-06 y E.030. En cuanto a la determinación de las fuerzas resistentes, para poder realizar la evaluación estructural correspondiente, se utilizó la norma peruana E.060-2009 Concreto Armado, con la cual se obtuvo dichas fuerzas y se realizaron las verificaciones estructurales. Con respecto a los resultados de las verificaciones realizadas, se observó que los reservorios en estudio no mantienen un diseño estructural adecuado en cuanto a las solicitaciones sísmicas actuales. Estas deficiencias se plasman en déficit de refuerzo horizontal por corte en muros, cuantía mínima vertical por corte en muros, refuerzo en la base del muro por momento tangencial, armadura requerida en la viga collarín, y refuerzo en el extremo de la cúpula por tracción radial; por lo que estas estructuras, ante la presencia de un evento sísmico severo, se encuentran expuestas a presentar fallas estructurales. / In the present thesis has been carried out the structural assessment of five round ground concrete tanks, built between 1977 and 1997, and located in high seismic risk areas in Lima Metropolitana in moderately rigid soils, with the objective of demonstrating if these structures still preserve an adequate structural design base on the current standards and consequently, if they will be able to withstand a severe seismic event and, hence, continue with their service. In order to model and determine the response of the tanks, the Housner’s rigid equivalent model was used, obtaining this way the impulsive and convective masses, which were modeled in the software SAP2000 with the ACI 350.3-06 standard and the E.030 Peruvian standard. Regarding on the determination of the resistant forces, in order to carry out the corresponding structural evaluation, the Peruvian standard “Concreto Armado E.060” was utilized. With regard to the results of the verifications carried out, it was observed that the reservoirs under study do not maintain an adequate structural design in terms of the current seismic solicitations. These deficiencies are reflected in horizontal reinforcement deficit by shear force on the walls, minimum amount of vertical rebar by shear on the walls, reinforcement in the base of the wall by tangential bending moment, rebar required in the beam by radial tensile force, and rebar in the end of the dome by radial traction; so these structures, in the presence of a severe seismic event, are exposed to structural failures. / Tesis

Analyse des propriétés dimensionnelles et massiques des cristaux de glace pour l’étude des processus microphysiques dans les systèmes convectifs à méso-échelle / Analysis of the size and mass properties of ice particules and study of the microphysical processes occuring in Mesoscale Convective Systems

L’étude des propriétés et processus microphysiques caractérisant la phase glace permet de mieux définir le rôle des nuages dans le cycle de l’eau et sur bilan radiatif de l’atmosphère. Les modèles atmosphériques et les codes d’inversion des données de télédétection utilisent des paramétrisations établies à partir de mesures in situ. Ces mesures servent également des besoins industriels en lien avec la problématique du givrage en aéronautique. L’étude présentée se base sur les données de deux campagnes aéroportées réalisées dans le cadre de la collaboration internationale HAIC-HIWC, ciblant les zones à fort contenu en glace que l’on peut observe rau sein des systèmes convectifs à méso-échelle (MCS) tropicaux. Sur la question des relations « masse-diamètre » (m - D) d’abord, une nouvelle approche est présentée. Basée sur la résolution d’un problème inverse, elle permet de restituer la masse des cristaux à partir de mesures colocalisées classiques en s’affranchissant de la traditionnelle hypothèse de loi puissance, et montre que cette dernière ne permet pas de représenter correctement les propriétés massiques de populations de cristaux hétérogènes (morphologie et tailles différentes) typiques des MCS. La variabilité horizontale des distributions de tailles permet d’étudier le vieillissement de l’enclume d’un point de vue microphysique et de souligner le rôle essentiel du processus d’agrégation dans l’élimination des petits cristaux apportés dans la haute troposphère par la convection profonde et dans la formation d’agrégats supra-millimétriques, précurseurs glacés des précipitations stratiformes. Les relations m - D restituées permettent d’identifier des régimes microphysiques distincts et ouvre la voie aux développement d’une paramétrisation de la masse volumique des hydrométéores en fonction de critères environnementaux. / The detailed characterization of ice cloud microphysics is key to understand their role in theEarth’s hydrological cycle and radiation budget. The developement of atmospheric models and remote sensingalgorithms relies on parametrisations derived from in situ measurements. These measurements are also usedby the aviation industry to handle the problem of ice crystal icing. This PhD work presents an analysis of themass and size properties of ice crystals observed in high ice water content areas embedded in tropical mesoscaleconvective systems (MCS) during two airborne field campaigns of the HAIC-HIWC international project.A new approach is developped to derive mass-size relationships (m - D) from size distributions and icewater contents. The retrieval is formulated as an inverse problem which waives the power law constraint, aclassical assumption that proves to be an oversimplification when applied to heterogeneous populations of iceparticules typical of MCS anvils.The horizontal variability of size distributions and the aging of MCS anvils is described in terms of microphysicalprocesses. The importance of the aggregation growth process is emphasized as it efficiently removessmall ice particles brought into the upper troposphere by deep convection and significantly contributes to theformation of large agregates, precusor of the stratiform precipitations. The analysis of mass properties revealsthat distinctive microphysical regimes may be identified from the m-D relationship retrieved in various conditions.It paves the way toward a statistical model of the effective density of ice particles as a function of environmentalparameters.

Study of convective heat transfer phenomena for turbulent pulsating flows in pipes / Etude du transfert thermique convectif dès écoulements turbulents pulsés dans un conduit cylindrique

Dans le but de réduire la consommation en carburant et les émissions de CO2 des moteurs à combustion interne, un des leviers, qui a intéressé diffèrent acteurs dans le secteur automobile, est la récupération de l’énergie thermique disponible dans les gaz d’échappement. Malgré différents technologie ont été investigués dans le passé; les transferts de chaleur qui apparient dans les gaz d’échappement n’ont pas encore étés suffisamment étudiés. Le fait que les échanges de la chaleur apparent dans des conditions pulsatives, notamment due aux conditions de fonctionnement moteur, rende les connaissances acquis jusqu’à présent limités et ne pas exploitables. A l’état actuel on n’est pas capable de pouvoir prédire le transfert thermique convectif des écoulements pulsé. Les travaux de cette thèse s’instaurent dans la continuité de ce besoin, l’objectif principal est donc l’étude expérimentale du transfert thermique convectif des écoulements turbulent pulsés dans un conduit cylindrique. La première partie de ce travail a été consacrée à le dimensionnement d’un moyen d’essais permettant la création d’un écoulement pulsé type moteur; en suite différents méthodes de mesures ont étés développes afin de connaitre les variations instantanés de vitesse et température de l’écoulement. Plusieurs essais ont été reproduits afin de caractériser l’impact de la pulsation sur le transfert de la chaleur. Les résultats expérimentaux ont été analysés avec deux approches différentes: dans un premier temps une approche analytique 1D a permis de mettre en évidence le mécanisme principal responsable de l’amélioration du transfert thermique convectif,ainsi, il a fourni des éléments supplémentaires pour le futur développement de modèles mathématiques plus adaptés à la prédiction des transferts d’énergie. En suite une approche 2D, supporté d’une phase de modélisation numérique, a permis de caractériser le mécanisme de transport radial d’énergie thermique. / Waste Energy Recovery represents a promising way to go further in fuel saving and greenhouse emissions control for Internal Combustion Engine applications. Although several technologies have been investigated in the past few years, the convective heat transfers, playing an important role in the energy exchanges at the engine exhaust, has not receive enough attention. Heat transfers, in such applications, occur in pulsating conditions because of the engine operating conditions, making thus the actual knowledge of the heat transfer phenomena limited and not exploitable. Nowadays there is not any model capable to predict convective heat transfers for pulsating flows. In this context, the present thesis addresses the purpose to study the convective heat transfer phenomena, by an experimental approach, occurring for turbulent pulsating flows in pipes. In the first part of this work, an experimental apparatus has been designed to reproduce an exhaust type pulsating flow in fully managed conditions, as well as, several measurement techniques have been developed to know the instantaneous profiles of air temperature and velocity. Many experiments have been performed in order to characterize the impact of the flow pulsation on the convective heat transfers. In the second part of this work, the experimental results have been analyzed with two different approaches: firstly, with a 1D assumption the time-average convective heat transfers has been computed, and the major mechanism responsible of the heat transfer enhancement has been pointed out. Furthermore, it has been possible to highlight the mathematical term representative of such mechanism, which should be accounted in future to define a more adapted numerical model for the heat transfer prediction. In a second phase with a 2D assumption, and, with an energy and a fluid-mechanic computational phase, the radial transport of thermal energy has been characterized for a pulsating flow.
