Transgredir, jamais! Linguistic interaction and politeness inside etiquette manuals

Renira Appa de Moraes Cirelli 02 August 2012 (has links)
This thesis discusses communication as an interaction-dependent factor and linguis-tic politeness inserted in etiquette manuals, in order to explicit and implicitly identify the interactional strategies presented by three authors chosen as corpus, which is comprised of some parts chosen from three manuals of behavior: 1) Marcelino by Claudia: the guide to good manners by Marcelino de Carvalho interpreted by Clau-dia, by Claudia Matarazzo; 2) 21st Century Etiquette: a practical guide to good manners for modern times, by Celia Ribeiro; 3) Always, sometimes, never: etiquette and behavior, by Fabio Arruda. This research seeks to establish the bases for per-spectives in Conversation Analysis (CA) and in Interactional Sociolinguistics (IS). These theorical bases have two dorsal structures or chief ideas, with studies on lin-guistic interactions and politeness. It gives still a birds-eye view of the three books belonging to the corpus, with a brief analysis of linguistic variation. It also investigates the usefulness of these manuals in the improvement of social interaction levels. The analysis of politeness markers traverses the criteria for correction, attenuators, modalizations (a speakers attitude towards their own utterance), forms of treatment, and faces threatening acts (FTA), in order to find answers to the researchs posing questions. Behavioral aspects of courtesy are mentioned only when inserted into speech context or its intention. The study originates from a point of view about lin-guistic politeness; threatening theory on positive and negative faces, focusing on the language of social interest, with the purpose of continuity of interaction between indi-viduals or groups.

The speech act of request: A comparative study between Korean ESL speakers and Americans

Koh, Soong-Hee 01 January 2002 (has links)
This is a comparative study of Korean students' request forms and aspects of their culture that has not been recognized in the field of speech. This offers an explanation for miscommunication between Korean speakers of English and native speakers of English. Lastly, this study provides empirical information about how Korean students use request forms and how Koreans' politeness strategies differ from Americans'.

La Revendication du plaisir littéraire : autour de Jean Renart et Raoul de Houdenc (XIIe–XIIIe siècles) / The Claim to Literary Enjoyment : around the work of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc (12th–13th centuries)

Dupraz-Rochas, Hélène 19 March 2016 (has links)
This work focuses on a short period in French-language literary and cultural history—at the turn of 12th and 13th centuries, around the work of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc—from the standpoint of literary enjoyment. The poetic output of these two early 13th-century authors, who display a keen authorial consciousness underpinned by a meta-discursive reflection that gives more than its due to the principle of delectare, testifies to the diversity of judgements that the Middle Ages pass on this controversial notion. The literary expression of enjoyment is indeed located at the crossing of several discursive fields that specify its meaning and shed contrasting lights on its stakes. Poetry both echoes the dominant views of the Church and epitomizes the complexity of attitudes of theologians and moralists towards literary enjoyment, between outright condemnation and conditional legitimiza-tion. It also bears witness to—and accompanies—the flowering of another ideology, aristocratic and secular, far more favourably disposed towards enjoyment, since the courtly imaginative world grants literary deduit a value that is at the same time ethical, social, and political. Lastly, it reflects the medieval conception of literary Beauty, as formalized by the ars poetica of Medieval Latin, which sets the canons and takes enjoyment as a sign. As a battlefield for these often discordant views, the literary works from the era of Jean Renart and Raoul de Houdenc testify to the appearance of a new claim to pleasure, considered both as an ethical standard and an entitlement. A certain conception of literature in the vernacular was thus born around year 1200.

Defensive driving as a preventative strategy for road traffic violations and collisions in Zimbabwe

Guruva, Danai 28 February 2002 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of defensive driving as a preventative strategy for road traffic violations and collisions in Zimbabwe. A sample of one hundred defensive driving graduates was used in the study. The descriptive survey method was used and data were collected using a questionnaire schedule. Literature review revealed that the majority of similar s udies by other researchers indicate that defensive driving is effective in preventing traffic violations and traffic collisions. The major findings of the present study showed that: (a) The defensive driving course is effective in preventing traffic violations and collisions; and (b) The defensive driving course should be compulsory in Zimbabwe. In view of these findings, this researcher urges the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe to request the government to make legislation that compels every motorist to attend the defensive driving course. The same organisation should start conducting research on road traffic accidents. / Criminology / MA (Criminology)

The burden of choice : the mariage plot in Rosanna Leprohon's Antoinette De Mirecourt or, secret marrying and secret sorrowing (1864) and Louis Hémon's Maria Chapdelaine (1916) / Le fardeau du choix : l'intrigue de mariage dans les romans Antoinette De Mirecourt Or, Secret Marrying and Secret Sorrowing (1864 ) de Rosanna Leprohon et Maria Chapdelaine (1916 ) de Louis Hémon

Lepitre, Michelle Amy January 2008 (has links)
This study examines how novels that employ a marriage plot can be understood as didactic tales by readers, both personally on the surface level of the romance and on a deeper level as well, one that tackles questions of identity, gender roles and cultural values in ways that are neither simple nor superficial. The two Canadian novels which form the basis of this study are: Rosanna Leprohon's Antoinette De Mirecourt Or, Secret Marrying and Secret Sorrowing: A Canadian Tale (1864) and Louis Hémon's Maria Chapdelaine: Récit du Canada français (1916). In order to accomplish this study of one English-Canadian and one French-Canadian novel--both written in Quebec--I begin my analysis by briefly examining a particular type of social didacticism in literature, starting with conduct literature and focusing particularly on the genres of the courtesy novel (as an example, I examine Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice [1813] and how it functions didactically in the tradition of the courtesy novel), sentimental fiction and, finally, the French-Canadian roman de la terre . Since the symbolic messages of Antoinette De Mirecourt Or, Secret Marrying and Secret Sorrowing, A Canadian Tale and Maria Chapdelaine: Récit du Canada français are very different, it is difficult to compare these works on an allegorical level. Even so, it is possible to compare them on a surface level, in terms of the marriage plot, the character triangle (which includes a heroine, a hero and a counter-hero) and the four-part structure of place (composed of the heroine's home, the counter-hero's home, an establishment representative of society and, finally, nature). By comparing these novels in terms of the marriage plot and the similar literary conventions present in them, my analysis demonstrates how the actions and decisions of the characters in Antoinette De Mirecourt Or, Secret Marrying and Secret Sorrowing (A Canadian Tale) and Maria Chapdelaine: Récit du Canada français could have helped an observant reader, especially a female reader, cultivate important insights about her own prescribed social role and burden of choice.//Résumé : Le fardeau du choix : L'intrigue du mariage dans les romans Antoinette De Mirecourt Or, Secret Marrying and Secret Sorrowing (1864 ) de Rosanna Leprohon et Maria Chapdelaine (1916 ) de Louis Hémon.

The relationship between transformational leadership and organisational citizenship behaviour

Sechudi, Orapeleng Oscar 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between the transformational leadership (TL) style of officers and their followers’ organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) in a South African military environment. TL was measured by means of the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Form 5X) and OCB by means of the Organisational Citizenship Behaviour Scale (OCBS). A sample of 300 followers was identified at a military unit in the South African Army and the participants were requested to complete the two questionnaires. The MLQ produced a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.91 and the OCBS a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.79, which were both statistically significant and acceptable. The main hypothesis of the empirical study was accepted, which predicted a significant relationship between TL and OCB (r = 0.412, significant at the 0.001 level). The hypotheses predicting a significant relationship between TL the five sub-dimensions of OCB produced mixed results. These results are as follows; there was no significant relationship between TL and Civic Virtue (r = 0.180), between TL and Sportsmanship (r = 0.132) and between TL and Courtesy (r = 0.207). Additionally, the hypotheses predicting a significant relationship between TL and Altruism (r = 0.499) and between TL and Conscientiousness (r = 0.315) were accepted. / Industrial & Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

Reading and imagining family life in later medieval western Europe

Gordon, Sara Rhianydd January 2016 (has links)
This thesis discusses the ideals of behaviour which sought to govern family life and which were common currency in England and northern Europe, how they were constructed, and how the late medieval gentry and nobility interacted with them. Hagiography, sermons, and courtesy literature all explicitly sought to influence the views and behaviour of their audiences, whilst the letter collections of the Pastons, Plumptons, Stonors, Celys, and Armburghs offer an insight into the self-perceptions of the recipients of this didactic material. Much of this material has been studied, but it did not exist in a vacuum. Images in books, often marking key moments in a typical life-cycle, supported, extended, even contradicted the notions inculcated by these texts, were increasingly relevant to later medieval daily lives, and both influenced their audience and were used by their audience as a form of self-fashioning. The five chapters of this thesis each explore a different aspect of the medieval lifecycle. Chapters One and Two take the foundation of the household, marriage, as their starting point, discussing courtship and the ideal marriage ceremony, as well as the attributes and behaviour of the ideal spouse. Chapter Three turns to how this household operated on a wider scale, demonstrating how lords were caught between Christ's example and the pressures of lavish lay display when building networks of friendship. Chapter Four considers the genesis of a new generation: how images and texts conveyed sometimes different notions of the ideal mother and father, the location of the household as a place of learning, and the importance of models when shaping the development of the ideal child. Lastly, Chapter Five investigates the end of the lifecycle, death, and how images and texts worked together to propound the central medieval idea of a 'good death'. Consideration is given throughout this thesis to how the norms of behaviour communicated by texts and images may be studied.

From binLi to protocol: the courtesy ritual of enovys and the change of foreign-related system in the late qing dynasty

Yu, Shu Chun Unknown Date (has links)
