We must repeat : critical edition of DEVO's "Jocko Homo"

2013 October 1900 (has links)
This project sets out to create a critical edition of the DEVO song “Jocko Homo,” which is found on multiple releases throughout the band's career, most notably on their breakthrough studio album Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are DEVO! The album recording was used as the base text for this edition (the words themselves determined by what is heard on the album and the formatting determined by the lyric sheet which accompanies the album), with variants from five other officially-released recordings included as footnotes. Explanatory notes are also included at the end of the text, to illuminate surrounding contexts and allusions. Finally, an appendix is attached featuring an early live performance found on the bootleg album DEVO Ultracore 1974-77, along with explanatory notes. While it was not included in the main body of the project on the basis of its being an unofficial fan release, it is still worth examining as an early version of “Jocko Homo.”

Édition critique, traduction et commentaire des fragments d' Atellanes / Critical edition, translation and commentary of the fragments of the Attelan fables

Debouy, Estelle 01 December 2012 (has links)
The field which this thesis covers is the so-called Atellana fabula. In the first part of it, which is an overall presentation of the particular genre, such questions as the one of the position of the Atellana with respect to other similar genres are addressed in the light of Livy’s texts among others. Then an interpretation of the fragments that came to us is proposed: it is put forward that the Atellana had original characteristics whatever it may have borrowed from the plays of Aristophanes or Plautus among others. After this overall presentation of the Atellanae, the historical study of the text and its tradition is proposed. As the text itself of the Atellanae is not given in any manuscript, one only may rely on indirect tradition to restore fragments of those plays. Most of this tradition is found in the works of the grammarians of later antiquity, especially in Nonius, where almost all of the quotations of Atellanae that came to us are preserved. Then a new critical edition of Pomponius’ and Novius’ fragments is proposed, along with the first translation into French of these plays of which no more than three hundred lines are preserved. Contrary to the previous editions of these fragments, this one presents a positive apparatus criticus, which includes the readings from the manuscripts of Nonius which all have been directly collated. Finally a new commentary on the fragments is proposed.

A tradução poética : Contes cruels de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam /

Domingos, Norma. January 2009 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: The objective of this study is to present a critical translation of some short histories from the book Contes cruels (1883) by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (1838-1889). The texts chosen are divided into two groups: the first is composed by the short histories "Véra", "L'Intersigne" and "Souvenirs occultes", translated into Portuguese in two editions (VILLIERS DE L'ISLE_ADAM, 1971, 1987) and whose analyses were developed in the Master Dissertation - "O universo simbólico em Contes cruels de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam" (DOMINGOS, 2004); the second group was chosen considering one of the specific objectives in this thesis, that is, the translation of some short stories that had never been translated into Portuguese: "Vox Populi", "Fleurs de ténèbres", "La Machine à Gloire", "Sentimentalisme", "A s'y méprendre" and "L'Inconnue". In this research, the analyses pointed to ways of reflecting about the translation process which involves specific, discursive, poetic narrative procedures used by the author. It was possible to highlight some stylistic procedures found in Villiers' discourse, which are extremely productive and are especially concerned with the condensed characteristic of the short story, its poetic prose and irony. It was very important to characterize those procedures because this study, devoted to the translation of a poetic literary text, is based on the assumptions of the translation theory and criticism, as well as on the literary criticism. These studies show differences between the act of translating and that of interpreting, and the translator should find adequate forms of translation as a way to fulfill the criterion that involves the production of the same effect, found in the departure text, in the target text. In general, the proposed critical edition is intended to present illuminating notes about... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Une incantation mise en musique : édition critique de "Sept, ils sont sept" de Serge Prokofiev / An incantation set to music : critical edition of "Seven, they are Seven" by Sergey Prokofiev

Moron, Nicolas 20 January 2011 (has links)
As the score of "Seven, They Are Seven" for tenor solo, choir and orchestra has been printed in Russia in 1922 without the composer's consent, a basic question is to know whether the musical text of this work, neglected and yet one of Prokofiev's dearest, is authentic. The origin of the Mesopotamian incantation transcribed by the poet Constantin Balmont, from which Prokofiev drafted the text finally put in music, was recalled by comparing at once the works of Balmont to the composer's writings.Previously unknown connections could thus be weaved, and the successive roles played by each in the constitution of the final text were clearly established. Research conducted in light of unpublished documents made possible to trace the origins of this work and to understand the conditions in which the 1st edition had been made, from a recently discovered autograph manuscript. Also, four rediscovered French translations made for this work's creation confirmed in a comparative study the key role played by the composer in this process. By taking into account their history, their specificity, and how they were drawn up, we systematically compared, for the realization of the critical edition of this score, three complete manuscripts as well as a vocal score and an annotated edition completed by a manuscript, all unpublished, to the three versions printed in 1922 and 1933. Representing the first critical edition of a work by Prokofiev, this research fits in line with the most recent publications, in order to provide interpreters as well as musicologists a clear score which agrees, at best, to the musical thought of Sergey Prokofiev.

A hermeneutic reading as foundation for a critical edition of Nepomuceno\'s Électre

Robison Poreli Moura Bueno 17 October 2013 (has links)
This dissertation presents a critical edition of Électre, incidental music of Alberto Nepomuceno, founded on a hermeneutic reading. It aims to produce an edition that reflects the composition in the original context to which it was intended, raising elements to elucidate the influence of Nepomuceno\'s studies conducted in France at the end of the 19th century. The research is based on the concept of horizontic fusion, from philosophical hermeneutics and therefore has a transmethodological character. Therefore, the object is approached from the historical and cultural, structural and intertextual interpretive horizons. At the end, each unveiled horizon brings a contribution to the understanding: the proximity of personalities and aesthetic ideals of the Schola Cantorum, the French pseudomodal style and \"greek\" influence from Saint-Saëns.

Vat. Pal. lat. 1729) : a critical edition with commentary : Eclogues I-IX and XI-XIIi (with a transcription of the marginalia of the eclogue X)

Romanini, Emanuele 12 April 2016 (has links)
This doctoral thesis presents, almost in its entirety, the critical edition with commentary of the exegesis of Petrarch’s Bucolicum carmen by Francesco Piendibeni of Montepulciano, an Italian humanist of the late Trecento. The exegesis, completed in Perugia in 1394, is preserved in the autograph manuscript Città del Vaticano, Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Pal. lat. 1729. The work as a whole has remained unpublished until today; only Antonio Avena, in 1906, provided a simpletranscription, partial and imperfect, of some glosses. The edition contained in this thesis aims at being innovative; in effect, it not only establishes and critically analyses a text which has remained unknown for a long time, but also makes it possible to delve deeper into the knowledge of Petrarch’s bucolic poem, to better assess how it was received by the scholars who came after him and to shed light on the exegetical tradition of early Humanism. A fundamental source for Piendibeni was Benvenuto da Imola’s commentary on the Bucolicum carmen; an unpublished transcription is provided here, based on the manuscript Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, lat. 8700. Finally, the list of known manuscripts belonging to Piendibeni has been updated, so that, for the first time, his library has been exhaustively reconstructed.

Muslim thought: its origin and achievements, by M.M. Sharif--edited, with notes, bibliography and introduction

Gul, Ateeb 22 January 2016 (has links)
Mian Mohammad Sharif's Muslim Thought: Its Origin and Achievements was first published in 1951 in Lahore, Pakistan. Discussing the most important facts about the origin and the evolution of Islamic science and philosophy, it points out historical connections between the Islamic and Western civilizations in fields of literature, philosophy, science and law. It makes the case that the Western civilization owes its progress in science and philosophy to the medieval Islamic world. The importance of the book arises from the fact that its author was one of the pioneers of philosophical study in Pakistan, and from the fact that it is a short, lucid and comprehensive introduction to the field. This thesis has produced a standardized text of Muslim Thought: it has edited the book for mistakes, typing errors and factual revisions; it has included a detailed bibliography of the sources that existed before 1951 or the post-1951 sources that provide credence to the historical references in the book; it includes a glossary of those names, places and words that may not be clear to all the readers and that are not self-explanatory within the context of the book. The thesis is accompanied by an Introduction that contributes new facts about Sharif's scholarly works and discusses the significance of this edition by placing it within the history of editorial work done in South Asia.

Fargeaudou, Julie 28 October 2016 (has links)
We have made a critical edition abundantly annotated of a text which knew a great success of its editions in the XVII century, the Tratado de república y policía cristiana para reyes y príncipes y para los que en el gobierno tienen sus vezes of Juan de Santa María (first edition : 1615). This text has twenty successive editions. Today they are hardly available and, moreover, there is no critical edition. Our work can be justified because of the inexistence of a modern critical edition, whose content deserves to be published. The publication has a large literary and political interest. Our edition is prefaced by an important introduction with new and original elements about the author and his work. We have put the Tratado de república... into the historical context of the era and in the politico-literary movement. Within the framework of this research work, we spoke about the central figure of the favourite in the Spanish governement of King Philip III. We hope to make discover various aspects of the role and the political function of the monarchs.
